Thai restaurant on Broadway
This place looks like a whole in the wall with tacky decorating - but the food is probably the best Thai I have ever had short of actually being in Thailand. Their chicken Pad Thai is amazing. I recently had the Green Chicken Curry which was also great. I just moved into the area and discovered this restaurant shortly afterwards. I now eat in or take out at least 2 - 3 times per month. I would highly recommend eating here - you will not be disappointed.
This is solid value, real Thai food. That means no ketchup sauce for the pad thai, no going overboard with the chillies, and fresh everything. These guys are not in the gourmet stratosphere but they are reliable, tasty, fresh,e tc, plus they are nice people and the service is laid-back but also efficient. This is MUCh better than most Thai places, with their sugary sauces and overloads of coconut. Recommended.
I agree with other reviewers here - great food, not so good ambiance. Even from outside, the restaurant looks kind of daunting and perhaps spooky, even. But the food at this restaurant will not disappoint you. They have the best Pad Thai (without those nasty ketchup thing) in town, and "Swimming Angel" (Chicken with peanut sauce over the bed or spinach) has such lovely taste. The price was really good too - my husband and I dined, order 3 dishes and 2 bowls of rice and the total was roughly around $40. Great value, and great food. Recommended!
We have been regulars of Wimaan Thai for many years. Anytime we crave for thai food, this is our go-to place. Before Sam opened the restaurant, we would go to Salathai and we used to hate the lineups there at Salathai. We never have to wait at Wimaan (especially since we have 2 little ones, and my patience is as bad as the kids'), there is always room, service is prompt, location and parking is convenient, and the food is better than Salathai. It is definitely authentic thai food, and I used to go there with my friend from Thailand. Our favorite dishes here are Tom Yum Goong soup, Moo Prig King (spicy green beens with pork), calamari with chili paste, and Padd See Iew noodles. Their other dishes are very good too, we have never had a bad dish here. And you can request for how spicy you want the dishes to be. Prices are very reasonable. Atmosphere can be better, however, since we always go with our kids, it is actually good that this place is family friendly, and we're not worried about them being noisy or messy. I hope there will be more regulars like us, then they can afford to spend some money on upgrading their decor. At the meantime, we enjoy this place for their fantastic thai feast.
We did our usual dinner date with a couple of friends and decided to give Wimaan a try after countless passerbys on Broadway. It's usually empty when I pass by their windows and if it wasn't for a huge party there, we would've dined in solitude.
We ordered our usual Thai favourites and none disappointed, but neither were they homeruns either. The pork kebabs could've used some more action, but the peanut satay sauce was good, the same sauce found in the raw greens with chicken which provided roughage. Our green curry was a little heavy on the bamboo shoots but plenty of the coconut milk for the rice. Portions are scant though prices are a little cheaper in compensation.
Our server lacked much enthusiasm but was on the ball for water refills and plate clearing, though the other staff that brought out our dishes (cook?) wore a nice big grin to our table.
Big, empty feeling space filled with knick knacks that're hardly worth raving about, as the decor feels a little outdated, though I didn't see any tumbleweeds go by either.
The food here seems like it can go either way; fortunately for us it was pretty good, but it left us a little unsatisfied.
The sauces are great, tasty, perfect! Love the curry! mmmMmarvelous. They were fairly empty during the dinner time I went. But hey, maybe it was just that one day. But I would have to say that the price isn't worth going there for the food. There are better places for the price. It does seem a tad on the higher side for Wimaan.
Went here for dinner last night. We had prawn coconut curry soup with lemon grass, it was amazing - very fresh ingredients. This was followed by 3 dishes and rice, which turned out to be about double the amount of food required. The dishes were good sized portions, reasonably priced (most are 9 bucks) and tasted good. I will return for a second look.
Wimaan wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. I really don't like the interior as it has a warehouse feel. The food seemed very ordinary, which is why I wouldn't go back. With many good Thai options, I feel no incentive to visit Wimaan even though it is near me.
We visited Wimaan last night for the first time, although it is right around the corner from our place. We started with a coconut curry soup with lemongrass and it was awesome! The perfect temperature and the perfect mixture of ingredients. Of course we ordered Pad Thai and 2 other dishes (which was too much) that we also very tasty. Overall it was a good experience and I will go back for sure.
We drive by this place all the time, and the storefront looked really impressive. It never seems too busy and got me curious. Finally went last week, and now I understand why it is not more busy. The food tasted mediocre, which lacked proper seasoning. Odd for a Thai restaurant, it did NOT serve top tier Thai rice, but Chinese rice instead (take it from someone who eats rice every day, there is a clear difference!) The service wasn't bad, but certainly wasn't great either. There were bits of dried food stuck on the utensils (yuck!), and everything tasted like it was made the night before. We are now wondering how long it will be before this place shuts down for good. Disappointing really, as the decor is actually quite nice.
Been coming here for years now and the food is always consistently good. Especially their special basil chicken thai fried rice. This is one of the only thai places that make my food as spicy as i want! Their tom yum soup is extra delicious too!
Service is always good as this place is never really busy...don't understand why because the food is so good. Maybe because it's a little overpriced for what you get and the ambience is just not really there. They do need an update on their decor, but the place is so huge it would probably cost a fortune. Owner is always present and wife is in the back cooking. Very pleasant family. Will keep going there for years to come.
We've been eating at the Wimaan on and off since Sammy moved to West Broadway from North Delta many years ago. Some nights the food is better than others, and we do regularly sample other Thai restaurants, but overall the Wimaan remains our favorite Thai place. We've always found the service to be prompt and discrete, and the dishes fresh and flavorful. The "Tiger Cry" is outstanding - one of Sammy's best dishes - and I can say I've never had a dud from amongst the other menu selections either. The location - a high ceilinged barn of a place on West Broadway - leaves a lot to be desired though. If it weren't for the great food...! On the plus, they're always able to accommodate large parties because the place is never full. Recommended.
I went with fifteen others for a Saturday night dinner and had a wonderful experience. The service was friendly and efficient, the atmosphere was pleasant and had personality, and the food was quite good. Also, even though we had a large group, the food came quickly and all at once so we could eat together. I thought it was very reasonably priced with a grand total of $15 for everything including tip and a shared dessert.
I first went to Wimaan with one other friend, and enjoyed the food and attentive service.
A couple of weeks ago I returned, this time with a party of 30 of my closest friends. Despite the great number of us, everyone received their food in a very timely manner, all of the bills were correct, and the hostesses were gracious.
The food is excellent--good incredients, very good portion sizes. My only complaint is that I asked for spicy food (4 stars) but got a dish that was only about 2 stars in my estimation. Nevertheless, excellent taste and nice presentation.
Wimaan is a great place to go for your next Thai fix!
I have eating at Wimaan periodically for a few years now. I've eaten at a lot of other thai restaurants in vancouver and also love malaysian and singaporean food. The food at wimaan is always fresh, flavourful, and served steaming hot. Portions are a decent size, unlike some other thai restaurants. I especially enjoy their tom kha khai (coconut chicken) soup and their green curry. the tom yam soup can be thermonuclear hot, so you can ask for it to be less spicy. The waitresses are always friendly and attentive and ask how spicy you want the dishes to be. After going there a few times the owner always recognizes us and the service is excellent.
Some have commented that they didn't like the ambiance here, that it feels like a warehouse. Personally I like the fact that its really spacious, not crowded, comfy and has some lovely thai artifacts.
I just came back from touring thailand and found the food here comparable to some of the top rated restaurants in Bangkok's chinatown district and certainly better than a lot of restaurants that we sampled in the north and rural areas.
I'm thai, and my dad knows the owner. The food is not bad, but is not worth the price. Not much decor to speak of, but really good ambience. Usually, rather quiet so bring a date there. The owner is always there with one or two servers, and they do service the right way. If you're looking for a nice place for Thai food, then go there. If you're only concern about food quality and want your money's worth, then go elsewhere.
I've only been there for lunches so I can't comment on the dinner menu. The lunches are nice for the staple orders (curries, chicken with cashews, etc). The service is ok, but leaves a little to be desired (again, lunchtime, could be far better for dinner). The ambiance could be better.
I just had takeaway lunch, was less than appealing.
The lunch specials from Winmaan is not too bad. I ordered the green curry dish and it came within 10 mins which was great for lunch. Food was decent.
At another time, I ordered the stir-fry seafood rice which was not too bad but again I wasn't wowed by it.
Boring. The same old same old.
Service was excellent. The owner was nice, a friendly guy who smiles and chats with you.
Inteterior decorating needs to be updated. Overall, this restaurant needs to be updated, foodwise and interior decorating in order to keep up with the fast and busy pace of W. Broadway.
Feeling a bit bored with eating out lately, until we went here! Solid food, great service. Decor is very basic, but clean and spacious. We ate a large meal, green curry, pad thai and very tasty garlic spinach. We were served by the owner, and he did it just right. If you want something you don't see on the menu, just ask.
I will be back. With a party.
I have been to this restaurant for few years now, out of many other restaurant, I would prefer to go to Wimann Thai or Khai... why? Well..I used to own my own restaurant and very familiar with Thai cooking, the owner is very nice and friendly, I feel very welcome when I go there.
My husband and my friends also enjoy this restaurant, the price is very inexpensive, I love the fact that you can actually have a decent conversation with your clients of friends because you don't always have the people at the next table listening to you conversation..
The cook there is a very nice and good cook, I always go back regardless of what other may say about this restaurant.
Me and my people love it there :)
