Wild Garlic Bistro is a small, intimate spot on Denman Street. The Bistro offers an imaginative tapas menu as well as an extensive cocktail and wine list.
Came here for brunch with 3 friends on Saturday.
We shared the roasted garlic & camembert cheese fondue with crostini. It was delicious.
I had:
- salmon, caper & camembert cheese omelet which came with fried potatoes, toast, fruit
My friends had (all came with fried potatoes, toast and fruit) :
- corned beef hash with poached eggs,
- bacon & avocado, topped with poached eggs & cheddar cheese,
- sauteed garlic spinach & tomato, topped with poached eggs & home made hollandaise
The portions were huge and the service was top notch.... friendly, attentive & our coffees were always refilled.
I would definitely return
The restaurant gives you free "garlic toast" as an appetizer. Dont be fooled. The garlic toast was just wonder bread from the Safeway across the street slapped with some margarine and possibly a hint of garlic.
We ordered candied garlic with crostinis, shrimp pot stickers and Portobello stuffed mushrooms.
Candied garlic -almost inedible. Seemed like it came out of a jar and had way too much sauce (it seemed more like jam). The "Crostinis" were just some crackers out of a box as well.
Pot Stickers - seemed old, and also like it came from a box. This is the first time I have ever disliked potsickers.
Mushrooms - The mushrooms were very old. They were wrinkly and very dry. I had to scrape out the stuffing just to make it edible.
Even the drinks were terrible. (However, they were only $5 on Friday, so that made up for it).
Overall, I would never go back here again unless they changed the quality of food.
I felt compelled to share my awful food experience at Wild Garlic. We ordered the stuffed olives, the cheese fondue, the salmon wontons and and ceasar salad. The flavors, the textures and the presentation at tjis restaurant left something to be desired. We were first served burnt garlic bread, not a good first impression. The olives were okay but not a dish I would order again. The fondue was runny and came with crackers which did not match it's $10 price tag! Our ceasar salad was the worst I've ever tasted, tasted like a mayonaise dressing with way too much anchovy paste leaving a nasty fish taste in my mouth. Lastly our wontons tasted like they came out of a box and were doused in a thin cheese dill sauce.
This is the worst restaurant I've dined at in the west end.
been here numerous times for lunch and dinner but am finally going to write a review.
Their brunch/lunch menus are extremely tasty and better yet, they are a great value. I usually stick with the bacon&avocado benny and it is awesome. Their garlic and camembert cheese fondue is also to die for. I usually leave extremely satisfied.
The place is a little small but cozy and perfect for an intimate evening. It's trendy and very welcoming. It's generally ideal to get a number of small plates to share. I've had dinner for two here and I've always spent around $50. For late snackers, I also believe they have 10% off on Friday nights after 10pm.
Their service is extremely attentive and welcoming. Water re-fills are constant and it's nice to be checked on during your meal.
A little far from the downtown core but definitely worth the trip!
Been here on 3 occasions, each time came out very very satisfied with the food. The salmon pasta dish (cannot remember the correct title)
was amazing, the most satisfying burst of flavors that my mouth has had the pleasure to endure. Big portions, too.
Its a small place, so id definitely book a reservation, as on 2 out of the 3 occasions iv been there, we had to wait. The service is friendly, kooky, but.. i did feel like the servers were definatly trying to push the meal further, to hike the price of the bill up. i know its their job, but its nice to be subtle.
Saying that the atmosphere and food and general service are heartily recommended by me, especially the food!
This restaurant really exceeded my expectations. We went on a weekend night and were seated immediately!
The ambiance is quite nice. Nothing special..but cozy and it was nice to be able to see the chef cook our food.
The service was good...if a little abrupt! Our waitress refreshed our water regularly and the food arrived at all the right times! They were very polite and did not have a bad attitude when we didn't order any alcohol!
The food was delicious. We ordered the potstickers which were freshly made and cooked. They were very flavourful and the filling was excellent. The risotto was also very good. Lots of shitake mushrooms and quite a big portion! The best thing was the pork spare ribs which were sizzling when we got them and covered in a yummy glaze with candied garlic and mash potatoes. All were reasonably priced and the food was very fresh.
We will definately go back to this restaurant. A plus for central location, price and taste.
After reading these reviews and checking out the menu I was really excited to try out this restaurant. Our first clue as to what was to come was the burnt wonder bread that barely tasted of garlic. This was followed by a cheese fondue which was a thin white sauce with a few small chunks of cheese in it. More like soup and crackers. The mussels were okay but certainly nothing to write home about. The stuffed portobello mushrooms were very bland which is surprising considering that stilton was one of the ingredients. Very little if any salt at all. The duck confit, on the other hand, was too salty, and the garlic mashed potatoes tasted like they had been in the fridge for a week. Will never go back there.
I haven't been to the other location, but this one was a great experience. A friend and I were visiting the area while house-hunting, and we went for a walk in the morning to find a bite to eat. I had Eggs Benny over spinach and tomato, and it was absolutely fabulous. As the name implies, quite garlicky, but deliciously so. The service was attentive and friendly, and the price wasn't painful, either. If I were nearer to the area, I would be eating here regularly! The entire menu is fascinating and bears repeat visits to explore more fully.
We have been to the Wild Garlic on Broadway, the original one, and found it to be excellent, so we were looking forward to trying the Denman location. We were sadly disappointed. Service was slow and inefficient. Wild salmon cakes were raw in the middle, lamb shank was okay, as was smoked salmon linguine but my partner said it was better at the Broadway location. Garlic bread was like something from a pizza joint, dry and poor quality bread. Orange ginger creme brule could have been good, but needed to be sweeter to make the flavours work. Far too expensive for the quality of the experience. We would not go back to that location but will stick with the Broadway location.
Wild Garlic is just what we were looking for this evening - excellent food, friendly service and a nice, trendy but unpretentious atmosphere. The food is creative fusion with European and Asian influences all tied together with a garlic theme. Great flavours, a good wine list and good value. Lots on the menu for vegetarians as well as carnivores. Can't wait to take friends and family there!
