White Spot located in SE Marine Drive. With over 60 locations in British Columbia and Alberta, White Spot has been serving unique, freshly prepared dishes in a contemporary, casual atmosphere for over 75 years.
This is an odd location for a Whitespot, but it is one that still has the drive thru (as far as I know). This location is not one I would prefer to come to; feels like a truck stop than a family restaurant.
However, I have come here at all times throughout the year, including Christmas Eve. Food is predictable on taste, portion and quality. The Calamari is tender, although the batter doesn't adhere well. Caesar salad is a safe bet here , as are the burgers, although diminishing in size nowadays, and particularly heavy on the Triple-O sauce. I've had the Tuscan pasta here - it was alright.
Service is somewhat impersonal, with servers having little personality, although you can tell there's some friendliness under all that.
It's usually not busy when I come here; something about this place feels gloomy, be it the lighting, design, colour tones, or everything in between.
This location feels like a refined roadside diner.
Back in the day White Spot was a treat. I didn't go often but when I did it was chicken in the straw or chicken pickens. Can't even find it on the menu anymore. On extra special occasions it was the buffet at Oakridge. Now it seems to be just a step above a fast food drive-in but twice the price. Food is pretty much always the same but the service seems to be deteriorating. Maybe spend less on the Chuck Currie commercials and more on staff training. Wait staff here was personable but just didn't seem to click. Now with Groupon and other similar services competing for business hard to see White Spot as a good choice to spend money.
I came to this white spot with a friend tonight, mostly because I like the location and the ambiance. I ordered a double double with an extra patty with fries, and my friend stuck with just the single burger and salad.
The service was just average. come, take your order, take your plates and pay your bill. I really do like thier triple-O sauce on the burger. I would have actually give thier food 2 1/4, but it rounds to the nearest whole number. So thier food was just decent, nothing too special. The value though was good. My bill came to $13.10 after taxes and for 3 patties it's not such a bad deal.
The only thing I really like is the ambiance. The ambiance alone wouldn't bring me back, but the food is good enough, so I will return at some point again.
I come for the food. We all know White Spot food tastes the same no matter where we go. I come at least once a week. The service is whatever. But that's not the reason I go there. This location is about 5 minutes away from where I live, there is never a wait at the door, the food comes pretty fast. What more do I need? Once, I saw the manager get really angry at a server and she was on the verge of tears. I felt really bad for the server but who knows what the story was. Like I said, I only go for the food.
I have done take-out from this location several times now and not once have they gotten the order right! I said no bacon in the burgers and yes they still put it in, when asked for no ice in the drinks- you will surely find ice cubes in it, and even when I got the Tuscan chicken pasta, they forgot to include the garlic panini that comes with it. It is very clear there is poor communication between the people who take the orders and pack them and the chefs who make the food. Will not ever be doing take out from this location again!
tonight we dined for 2 adults and 2 kinds.
about the meal: fine - burger & beer (cant go wrong here), clam chowder (should have been thick but this one was the consistency of water - my kids usually like this with crackers but they really disliked this chowder this time. I should have given them straws to drink from the bowl.
the fusilli with scallops and prawns - good.
pirate paks - no brainer.
service? with only a handful of tables you would think 2 servers could handle it, right? WRONG!
Had to pull teeth to get service! Asked for extra crackers for the kids - on 2 occasions - they never got them! ketchup? a must for kids - we had to walk up and ask ourselves for the bottle (from the other server) after our server said she would bring it by. Maybe she was having a blonde week!??
You would think the server (a blondie) could come by the table to check on us after the meals have been served, right? NOPE, nada, zip!
You know there's a problem, when you have to waive a 4X8 foot surrender flag just to get some attention.
And yes one other thing - since all the occupied tables were all in the same small section, you would think that if blondie was walking down the same isle with her customers, she could multi-task in it's simplest form, right? nope, she's one of those that has to serve one table at a time going back into the kitchen with one customer request, completing that before moving forward to the next customer....IF she remembered to get back to you.
SO remember - eats are good but NOT for the service.
We stopped in here the other night for dinner. We waited about 10 minutes for a table, as it was busy, but once we were seated our server was very nice, and courteous. We ordered the chicken quesadilla, and chicken pie. Drinks came quickly, and when our food arrived, it was nicely presented, and very tasty. Nothing too special, but good, sort of like comfort food. The restaurant itself is nice, lots of booths. Would go here again when in the area.
