Vera's Burger Shack is a licensed hamburger joint on Main Street. Voted for Best Burger Serval Years Runing.
You Can't Beat Vera's Meat!
We were on a burger hunt and got tips that the Main location was the place for it, ranking above Splitz. So we were off for a burger sampling.
What do you expect from a burger joint? Just like it should be, so don't be expecting any fancing dining here. I'd say it was reasonably clean, nothing for me to worry about.
We seemed to be the 1st customers of the day at the time and noticed all the employees gnoshing on their own grub, which to me is always a good sign (or at least not a bad sign!). There's no fine service to be had here either, a bunch of young guys running in a very relaxed (to be generous) atmosphere. I've no problem with that since they got their work done efficiently, when it came time to do our order and cook, they got serious.
The burgers (and yam fries)? Good. Very good. We had a beef and a chicken one with all the fully loaded fixin's and the "usual". It's quite a decent value given the taste, size and all. I'm only giving it 3 stars because I remember everytime we make burgers at home, it is even better than this.
We've been to fast food crap and everything in between (McD's, Jack-in-the-Box, In-n-Out, Carl's Jr six dollar burgers, White Spot, Earl's, Red Robin's etc). I would definitely rate this near the top, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Still, I would say this is easily above the old Moderne Burger. There's still a few more places in town to check out, but if I had another burger craving, this would be the place I'd hit right now.
After visiting a few similar burger joints and looking at my previous review, I think I was too generous with my ratings. Given all the Vera's hype I was also probably scared to critisize it too much so I biased my ratings up a bit.
When it comes down to it the food is OK, but it's WAY overpriced given no table service and the messy disorganized state of the restaurant. Just too many strikes against this place for me to even consider going anywhere near it again.
Boyfriend always complains that Vancouver is lacking in good burger eateries. He's right. Our dinner at Vera's confirms it.
Supposedly one of Vancouver's best burger joints, it disappointed. I had a plain cheeseburger and it's true what the other reviewers say. It's a bland patty of grease. By the time I was finished, I was so bloated from grease, I felt gross. The cold soft drink didn't help.
For just a few extra bucks, I'd rather go to a real restaurant and order a gourmet burger.
Service wasn't all that great. Next time, I'll drive over a couple blocks and give Splitz a try.
i had a chedar bacon burger with fries and a beer. From the time i ordered it they started cooking it for me. It was like gourmet fast food. I literally watched them cook the burger right infrount of me while i was sipping my huge beer. Their grill shot fire and everything, such an amazing experince to be able to watch my food being cooked right before my eyes. These guys really take burgers seriously. and it tasted fantastic! I like big juicy burgers and the lettuece and tomatoes tasted so fresh. But i love BACON BACON BACON!
Finally did try Vera's burger. I love a nice juicy burger. Got there later in the nite and the place was pretty empty there was a couple about to leave and two single diner in there. Took a few minutes to study the menu and decide what i wanted. decided on a double patty burger with the works and extra toppings. The burger alone was over $10. Plus I had the poutine and a milkshake.
First impression was this was a huge ass burger with everything i had on it. But them main component of the burger to me is the meat patty. When i finally manage to manhandle the burger and get a few bites in, i found the patty dry for my liking. I understand that it may be because it is the leaner choice of beef in it. but it also lacked seasoning and flavor. Albeit this may be healthier for me. But if I wanted healthy i would not be eating a colossal burger. So the patty here is lean and bland tasting. Next time I'll have to find something to season and turn the spice up a notch. The poutine and onion rings were good compliment. But the milk shake tasted bland.
I will be back again to give this place another try, only because I am a glutton for trying food. But $20 for a burger meal with self service. I'd still be expecting more. So far nothing special about Vera's.
The burgers tasted bad, they were so oily. It was a waste if money and time.
However, the people who were running the place were very friendly.
It was hard to find the location because of the big tree covering the stores sign on the front.
The place looked nice fair enough, but the burgers tasted bad.
I've been to Vera's a few times, and each time the burgers have been decent. They generally overcook them, leaving them a bit crusty on the outside, and very well done on the inside.
The good thing is that you can pick from a wide variety of toppings, although a lot of them cost extra. The burgers are usually $7 or so with even the most basic toppings. It doesn't seem worth it to me. The burgers are large, so you don't need sides, usually. Which is a good thing, because an order of french fries is over $3!
The last time we were there, the hygiene of the servers was really awful. They picked stuff up off the floor and wiped the counters and didn't wash their hands before they touched our food. At least four different people touched our food without gloves.
The atmosphere is lacking. The restaurant is small with only four or five tables and it takes them an abnormally long time to make the food, even when they aren't that busy.
The food is decent, but not really worth the price, and the lack of hygiene is off-putting. I'm not sure I would go back again, even if they are only two blocks from my apartment.
A new location just opened up on Main and 13th, so I thought I would try it. I have never been to Vera's before, but had heard many good things, and my sister had been to a diff. location and she said it should be good.. We decided to call ahead our order and pick up. No problem they said after we submitted our order, should be ready in 15 minutes.
We arrived 15 minutes later, and waited another 10. Then were told they "ran out of fries" and staff seemed a bit confused as what to do. They did mention they just opened on Wedneday (5days prior) and they werent sure how much stuff they needed to order. So they suggested either taking it off or getting onion rings.. as we had 2 orders of fries, I said cancel one and make the other onion rings. Staff didn't seem to understand how to calculate it. Others waiting for thier orders also were not told of the fries run out situation until the rest of thier orders were completed either.
Overall, I would say the burger I had (Lamb) tasted great... wasn't impressed that they charge extra for things and they didn't mention that when ordering, but food was good - over priced, but good.
Service - well okay, I know they just opened up so maybe give them a break this time, but most of the staff seemed happy and pleasent, the cook however, seemed geniunly not happy to be at work.
Will perhapes go again, once they have settled down a bit and figured out how much supplies they need.
took the wife and kids for a burger a couple of night's ago. We had heard the burgers were good so we went a tried it out. We sat in side on the corner long picnic table which was fine.
my wife loved the burger - she had the plain jane with regular works. she ordered mushrooms, but they had run out - go figure! 6pm and they're out of shrooms!?? (they need to work on their inventory, I guess.)
I had the pawer burger with regular toppings - it was good. Compared to a spot burger and the red onion, it was a good burger. Wasnt too greasy.
We shared some sweet potato fries - good. The kids had the chicken fingers - they liked them. We both a beer on tap (no brainer) & water (which turned out to be iced tea even though the signage said "water" (go figure)
Meal was fine for it's size and location. We'll be back.
I have been now in Vancouver for a couple of weeks, so i thought why not find myself a couple of places close to home where I can see myself go eat on a regular basis, so I tried out the Vera's on Main street. The place was busy when I got there (no line-up), but there was only one small table left available. I ordered a Vera burger (they suggested i try that considering it was my first time), a side of onion rings and a beer. I had the choice of lots of different condiments, and decided to try them all (the free ones). After 15 minutes they called my name to let me know my order was ready, which i found kind of cool, and i gobbled down a really juicy burger that tasted great! The onion rings were good too (could have been a bit more crispy) and the beer was nice and cold. Overall the place was nice and clean, love the big tv and garage style window. I will come back really soon Vera.
Went to Vera's on main a couple days ago i ordered a turkey dog for the first time and i was pleasantly surprised. The place was clean, atmosphere was good, it was quite busy, and a little tight for sitting so i had to take my food to go. I will come back
it was about time vera's hit it up on the east side! Went there earlier today for lunch. Had a G$ with natural patties. It was outstanding! The staff was really friendly, especially the manager owner? much better atmosphere then the one in kits. i was talking to a guy who was eating there and he told me he has been there 6 days in a row, i think i might follow his example! keep it up veras!
About a week ago, I decided to grab a Vera's burger for dinner. Much to my surprise, it was very, very generic and nothing special.
I got the classic burger. The bun was just like any other burger bun. Lettuce, tomato, peppers, and I paid extra for mushrooms. It was a decent burger, but, for nearly $7, it was definately not worth it. I could make this at home for a fraction of the cost.
The ambiance and service was just like any other fast food restaurant. Nothing extravagent, but nice and clean.
With so many better restaurants and take out places in the Main area, i'd suggest skipping Vera's. That is, unless you're really, really craving a burger and don't want to drive to McDonald's.
Had went and tried the new Vera's along Main st. Wow, good luck finding parking with all the construction going on. The place is pretty nice inside though. Couple of TVs and a big screen and its clean!
The food was decent, the burgers were flavorful and not dry. The poutine was drenched with gravy and tasted great as well! It does get rather busy around noon time and the place fills up quick. The staff was friendly, but a bit green on what to ask for when getting your fixings on your burger.
