good burger great fries

I come hear all the time. The canuck burger (cheddar and bacon) is my stand buy. You really cat beat these guys for a good old fashioned char broiled burger. But I would be remiss in not mentioning their fries. Usually when I see a place has "fresh cut home made fries" I cringe and order something else, but I have never had bad ones here. The are consistently crispy on the out side and fluffy soft on the inside. I will be back for more

Food: Ordered the lamb burger and the sweet potato fries. The lamb burger was delicious! Nice, big, juicy with 'the works'. I liked the sweet potato fries even more. Good portions

Service: Very friendly server. I know all the burgers are 'made to order', but I was the only other customer at that time and it took over 10 minutes. I can't imagine how long the wait must be during lunchtime!

Value: I had the $10 off birthday coupon, so I ended up only paying $2.60 for my meal. Even without the coupon, I think the prices are ALRIGHT considering that food in that general location is pretty pricey.

Ambiance: Decent, no frills, clean.

Will be back, just for the sweet potato fries though.

Great Burgers...NOT!
By thecritic of Vancouver (302 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, November 15, 2004 - 7:04pm [Dine in]

I'm sure their burgers were good at one point in time but I have never experienced it. I have had a burger here twice, both times they were WEAK. Both times the patties were scorched and WAY overcooked leaving it with little flavour. I don't think there was a high school graduate behind the counter (nor at the grill), so that might have played a role.

Its also hard to order a burger here. They only have toppings, so you have to figure out every single topping you want on your burger. This may seem like a trivial issue, but I have screwed up my burger both times because I forgot a topping or two that was on a normal burger. They need to have a few standard burgers on their menu.

Just noticed that Vera's was voted reader's choice best burger in Vancouver in the Georgia Straight. Wow. This leaves me with zero confidence in reader's choice polls.

The best part about this place is the slogan: "You can't beat Vera's meat!" Apparantly you can when don't know how to grill a burger. There are much better burger places in town, avoid this place entirely.

Practical Joke
By godfrey of downtown (20 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, September 27, 2010 - 4:47pm [Dine in]

So we ordered two burgers, a veggie burger and a chicken burger, a small fries and two drinks. The total came to $26.

Yes, $26 for a small fast-food order.

"Fast" food, that is. It took over 15 minutes for the fry cook to plonk down two lukewarm meals and the saddest basket of over-cooked french fries I have ever seen. The person who took our orders was sullen and didn't even say hi.

My veggie burger was dry and tasteless, and they screwed up both orders (forgetting onions on mine and pickles on my wife's "customizable" burger). The ingredients were fresh, though.

Overall this place was such a monumental rip-off I figured it had to be a practical joke. I really have to quit getting suckered by all these stupid trendy Kitsilano locales.

note: White Spot is one block down, way cheaper, much faster, and far tastier. Sophies on 4th isn't bad either. V

not much more to add to that, we'd rank veras at just a bit better than mcdonalds, but not by much.
such a simple thing to put together, bun, meat, salad and some cheese and it was just a big soppy dripping mess.
gross... sorry vera. get some quality control

Cold burger & extremely poor service! Bravo!

Submitted Wednesday, March 24, 2010 - 11:53am [Dine in]

Recently visited on St.Paddys Day. Service started off ok until I received my burger on a "refrigerator" cold bun. This bun had never seen a toaster oven or any other warming device and was cold to the touch. When I presented this to the server they agreed and promised me another. After 5 minutes waiting I noticed an open faced burger sitting on top of a toaster oven (in hindsight I suspect they moved the burger etc. over from the first burger) for over a minute and thought to myself, no ... that can't be mine; but lo & behold I see them take it from there, wrap it up and present it to me as my new burger. And it was as cold as the first one.
Two strikes and you're out in my book so we promptly left (still hungry). I got the name of a Manager and phoned him and let him know about the pathetic food and service and he promised to get back to me. So far his response is on a par with the other experiences I had there; piss-poor!
I had previously gone there every few weeks with my kids but we will definitely not be going back there any time soon!

Getting Better

This place has improved over the past year and is a lot better than some of the other Vera's especially the Denman Street disaster. Two of us had the lamburger with mushrooms, shared a fries and with a drink each the bill came to $24! Kind of expensive but the food quality and service were more than acceptable. Th place was clean and the fries were fresh (not frozen). Seems like the management realise there are a lot of choices in Kits and once you've had a bad experience you are unlikely to return. I hope some of their other locations wake up too.

You can't beat Vera's gelato?
By chasiubow of North Van (675 Reviews)

Mrs. C and I were out with some friends and we were struck by a craving for gelato. Since we were in Kits and we didn’t want to hunt around, we hit Vera’s. They had a good selection and I ordered a blackberry and chocolate combo that I shared with my beloved. The blackberry was more of a tasty sorbet, and the chocolate tasted good. My friends had mango and pistachio, which were reported to be yummy.

The gelato was good if not great, and the price was right. Plus they upgraded me to a waffle cone at no charge. The service was very good, and the restaurant décor was okay if you like corrugated steel and picnic tables. I thought that was just fine, too.

Will I be back for a burger? I think so.

Spent over 10 bucks for a burger and fries, and I didn't really even think it was that great, at least not for the price. You can get a much better burger platter at Crave, and it is a nice sit down restaurant.

My 1st Drunk Chicken Sandwich was so juicy, tasty, mouthwateringly delicious that it kept haunting me until I went back for a disappointing 2nd trial. I did think I was getting it btwn 2 slices of bread as that little sandwich icon indicated on the menu board, but the bun was perfect.

When asked what I wanted for toppings, I was at a loss as I thought it was already set. As it turned out, I just said yes/no to the items she listed & after being asked about the 8th item, I just said w/e else is good, please. I ended up getting bacon w/it. Everything went so well together. It only costed me $5.99 + tax. So I wasn't charged for some of the toppings that were not part of the freebie list? I was too overwhelmed w/all of the unexpected choices to notice until my subsequent visit when a similarly topped one (but obviously not, as it tasted nothing like the 1st impressive one) costed a little over $9 *gasp*. Well, yes, it's restaurant-priced burgers w/o the potatoes. That was fine, I figured, as I couldn't wait to go thru the same mouthwatering experience. BUT when I got home, I found half the chicken was obviously undercooked! Had to microwave it -_-. The fact that I was expecting a similarly long wait of 20-30 mins for my burger but instead, it was ready in less than 10 (this time I had 2 orders--1 beef, 1 chicken) should have clued me in. I'll just be sticking w/beef varieties in future as the patty's quite thick & beef's great whether it's bloody blue or burnt brown.

I'm thinking I should eat-in sometime w/ notebook in hand to note the exact toppings that makes a good burger so as not to build up a disappointing one in future. At those prices, I'm not willing to experiment as often as it would require as I don't eat burgers often, I don't want to have 7 bad experiences out of 10.

I'd also have to agree w/the comments regarding the service & hair/cap-fondling habits of the staff there as I, too, have witnessed that once out of my 2 visits so far.

Overpriced Burgers
By MBAK of Vancouver (80 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, August 7, 2008 - 12:58pm [Dine in]

I've been to Vera's a couple of times in the past and have never been impressed by their food, service, value, or anything else related to them for that matter.

Their burgers are ok. They taste like the frozen burger patties you buy from the grocery store and grill at home (no flavour). The toppings are okay. The fries and onion rings are ALWAYS super super greasy.

There isn't a whole lot of service. Someone takes your order. They cook it (probably in about 10-20 minutes). Then they call your name and you go get it. So, no service in my opinion.

As for value: what value? For the price they charge at Vera's, I could go to Cactus Club, Milestones, Burgers Etc, Red Robins for a far FAR superior burger (and service to boot!).

Ambiance is dingy. It looks ok from the outside, but everything (from the chairs, tables, countertops, ketchup bottles) is covered in a slimy and sticky layer of grease. YUCK

I highly do NOT recommend Vera's to anyone wanting a decent burger. Head over to McD's or BK for a quick burger fix.

This place a joke, plain and simple. We waited for 20 minutes only to be served 2 uneatable burgers. The first was so sloppy it was inpossible to eat, for other covered in mold, seriously, mold.
We confronted the 17 year old manager at the kits location, only to receive a $5 bill and a "shitty dude, that sucks, sorry". The concept of this place is good, but the execution is laking. C'mon Vera get it together, hire some adults to represent your investment, instead of the slack ass teenagers you have there now.

How Can People Like this Crap?
By JonJ of Kitsilano (19 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, April 8, 2008 - 5:12pm [Dine in]

Ok, I am guessing the people who voted this horrible burger the best in Vancouver normally go to McDonalds or Burger King. If I was to compare to those places, ok it is better.
But it is also a lot more expensive than those places. So, it should be compared to places of similar cost, real restaurants.
This burger was try and a terrible flavour. Okay, perhaps it is fresh, but I don't see how cheap meat is any better not frozen. How about use good quality, and fresh?
Service is indifferent, though I can understand how it would be hard to get anyone decent wanting to work here.
If you are comparing this to the fast food places, which they must be to claim any quality in the food, well then it also fails. The fast food places tend be cleaner, with better service, and a lot cheaper.
I don't eat at those places for a reason. And I won't eat this terrible burger again for the same reason. I like good food.

Going down down down

I've been going to Vera's for years, even when it was only in Dundarave. The Kits location has unfortunately gotten worse each time I visit, which is too bad since I live 5min away. They're doing the Sport Chek thing, hiring younger staff who spend more time chatting with each other than paying attention to what you're ordering and cooking it right - I shouldn't have to send back two overcooked burgers. The plain hamburger is still good value, but have you checked out the prices they're charging for the rest, $8+ for that??? And the milkshakes and fries have also gone downhill. Greasy greasy fries and overpriced milkshakes. The owners need to spend more time in quality control rather than focusing on expanding locations - even worse are the staff at the Granville & Broadway location. Sorry Vera's, like FatBurger you've lost the edge and now you're just hype and overpriced. Fix that and I'll come back.

Where's the Vera

I assume that Vera would roll over in her grave if she saw how this place was running not to mention the food quality.I love the concept and agree the taste of the burgers themselves are good not great but good. I would agree with another reviewer that they need to "up" the quality in certain areas and also agree with the creating a standard burger to work off of. Generally I find it hard to believe that someone rates this place a 5 but to each their own! What can I say I am hotdogboy if it was Vera's HotDog Hut it may be a different story!

Not All Locations Bad
By super_girl10057 of Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Wednesday, March 7, 2007 - 9:30pm [Dine in]

After reading all the bad reviews about the Kits location I'd just like to mention that not all the locations are as bad as this location. I can agree with the reviews this location has gotten, but I've recieved better service and food from the other locations. Maybe they should put some of the staff from the other locations in that store and hopefully bring it up the hype about Vera's. A new location opened up on main street and since I live in the area I thought I'd try it out and see if it was any better. IT WAS!! the staff was friendly and helpful even though it was busy, they didn't stop caring about the customer. the food was great, especially the lamb burger, the food was served in a timely fashion, granted it takes a little longer when its really busy but then it was worth waiting 15 minutes for it. People shouldn't write off all veras just because they had a bad experience at one location...if you didn't like one try a different location before giving up.

This place has some of the best burgers in the city. amazing food. the turkey burger is the best I have ever had. The new location is great - much bigger, cleaner, more seating. The kids that work there are a bunch of punks. I guess they don;t have a manager - it is a bunch of 15 year olds with attitude. The bad staff is close to out-weighing the good food.

Okay burgers, taste wise, but by the time you are done ordering your basic burger-and yeah real meat, yeah fresh this and that- the price is up there in the category of a sit down meal. Its a BURGER for Pete's sake!! Plain old over-priced Vancouver once again-the burger isn't even that great. Save yourself the disappointment and buy some good meat( buffalo is the tastiest) and make your own big, fat, juicy, no preservatives, no pimply kids germs , delicious, flavour filled, juice running down your fingers....... burger.
Seriously, this place is a rip off!
Maybe get the FF to go-oven fries aren't the same.

King of QUEENS!

Submitted Sunday, June 17, 2007 - 7:13pm [Dine in]

As recommended by a friend, a visit was paid on the rave reviews.

Immediately greeted by the ladies behind the counter, my wife and kids are instantly at ease. That set the tone for the evening. You can almost tell when the crew like the place they work at. Al least this was the sense I picked-up on.

SERVICE: Fast, friendly and patient. Realising my daughter's first visit, our order-taker waited patiently and answered each question with the long version.

FOOD: Well, as mentioned I had high expectations. In one word, MET! To concisely define QUALITY as 'conformance to requirement', this was the basis of my expectations met. I have to add, if you like fries (who doesn't?), brace yourself. It could be the ball-and-chain holding them back in the Burger race. The 'Chilli Fries' (by which I have been spoiled by "TOMMY's", the Los Angeles standard-bearer for anything you can put Chilli on) is less than stellar. The chilli is supposed to marry nicely with the fries. This didn't happen here. Nevertheless, the beef burgers ar worth repeat visits.

AMBIANCE: It is what it is, a casual burger joint with roadhouse style picnic table seating. You may have to share a table with other patrons which may be uncomfortable for some. If it is, choose your timing wisely.

The friendly demeanor of the ladies behind the counter, QUEENS of the burger kingdom!
