Last night, my friend and I were looking for something different to try, so we headed over to UnWine'd on Howe. I've been there many times and they're always changing up their menu so I was interested to see what they've added.
We had the Salt Spring mussels and the crab cakes, which are two of my favourite dishes on the menu. There is a serving of shoestring-fried potatoes in the centre of the mussels, which are so good with the sauce. The chef came out to check on how everyone was enjoying their meals and when he heard our comments on how good the sauce was, he offered to bring us some extra bread for dipping. He came back with a toasted baguette, which we happily used to finish up all the delicious broth.
The crab cakes are very good - no filler here!! Lots of crab meat and cooked crispy on the outside. They are served with a mango salsa and wine-poached pears, which I love. For dessert, we had s'mores. What a unique and very entertaining dessert idea - it was fun toasting our marshmallows over the flame, and then dipping them into the chocolate sauce and squishing them between the graham crackers. The idea of it is actually what we enjoyed more - it was just a fun thing to do. I think the graham crackers could have been better, because they were probably just out of a package - but it was really enjoyable nonetheless.
I will definitely go back to UnWine'd, as I really enjoy the service, the ambiance and of course the food. Everyone is very friendly and accommodating - which seems so rare in Vancouver restaurants lately.
Went there on a weekend and it wasn't that busy. A limited menu as they had a new chef. Tried the mussels, a bit on the small side but very good, and the crab fritters, small as well but good. Tried the pasta for the main and it was very good. Nice wine selection but overall value was not there. They should increase the portions. Service was good but it was quiet so expected as much. Nice looking wine bar. May try if they expand their menu.
My friends and I came here for tapas and drinks a couple of weeks ago and had an amazing time.
I booked a table for 10, which is indeed difficult to do in downtown Vancouver on a Saturday night, and the staff were kind enough to call me beforehand and see if we had any special requests, what the occasion was, etc.
When we arrived, our table was set and ready to go. The restaurant is lovely, warm and cozy. I would happily come here for a romantic dinner for two.
We had a wonderful server all to ourselves who was so helpful, kind and attentive. She recommended the $60 special to be shared between two people - any two items from the starter list and any four from the charcuterie/cheese list, plus a bottle of wine. Awesome! The food was great, and I found it to be well-portioned for our purposes (drinks and tapas, not looking for a big sit-down meal).
They added an autograt on the bill, and she made sure to mention that there was an autograt, and we were not required to leave any additional tip money. This has never happened to me in a restaurant before (usually I have to hunt for the gratuity, and sometimes they add it without indicating this in the menu); I was floored.
We had such a wonderful time - I'll definitely be back soon.
The food and wine was great however the service was horrible. I think there was one waiter servicing the entire place. Although there was only about 4 occupied tables the entire time we were there. We arrived for 630 and due to the extremely slow service, by the time we got the bill and left it was almost 10PM. Normally i don't mind sitting and enjoying a long dinner but we were anxiously awaiting our waiter majority of the visit. I really enjoy the food however this poor service makes me hesitant to go back again.
A few friends and I chose this place off of the $15.00 dine out list because we thought it maybe seemed to be in the wrong category. We really felt we got a great deal as the food was certainly worth the $25.00 dine out price. We had a fabulous Squash soup and then between the three of us there was the venison, chicken and scallop meals. We all loved our meals and desert too although we could have used slightly larger desert portions. Apparently the coffee was also amazing.
The atmosphere was pleasant, quiet, well decorated and clean. The bathrooms are beautiful and there is cream and hairspray etc in the washrooms which is a nice touch.
Service was efficient but our waitress when asked for a wine recommendation froze and for a restaurant named UnWine'd I think the the waitstaff should have a bit more wine training. But if you can overlook that it is a great deal.
All in all I recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly!
A couple of our friends have started up a Supper Club, a way to try out different restaurants with company etc. This was our inaugural venue, picked by the organizer. There were 7 of us. We arrived for 7pm without a reservation, as we thought the organizer had made a reservation. Restaurant was a little quiet for a Friday evening. The hostess/waitress asked us if we were planning on just drinks or with food, as I guess you can just come here to drink if you feel like it. The restaurant is all black furniture and heavy black wood 'corrals' made of dark heavy wood with low lighting and dark chocolate walls etc for a dark but warm interior. Lots of candles and such. Music was a bit too loud, and got louder at 9pm or so. Big screen showing hockey highlights. Not my cup of ambiance. Waitress/hostess, she seemed to be the only one, came and asked us for drinks etc and left the menu. Came back later and asked if we were ready to order. We said no, but one of us, the organizer, said she was starved and would like to order her tapas to start. Well, some of us were ready, so we ordered as well. She didn't do the whole table tho. Those of us who had ordered got our food relatively quickly, but our tablemates still hadn't been asked for their orders yet. This was just the tapas. No entrees yet ordered. Food, for the most part was quite tasty and well prepared, but would gladly skip the garnish of curly julienned raw carrots and beets on most of the dishes. Cheapest tapas item was french fries with truffle oil at $6, next one up is $10 for grilled asparagus and all the way to $17 for king crab legs, about 3 skinny ones. Entrees, only 4 choices,
cheapest is $19 for salmon pan seared up to $24 for the new york strip loin, with a louisiana rub. The tapas we got were rather good, tho skip the scallops, not worth $14 for 3, even tho they were large. The gnocchi and the baked elephant garlic w baked brie are the best value and excellent taste. Crab cakes were good too. The sirloin was passable and the crab Mac & cheese was ok, tho not worth $21 in my book. All in all.. ok... not my first choice, but doable. Best thing for most of us was the wide selection of wines served by the glass. You could also pick a set menu with wines to accompany each coarse for a price of $44. Not a lot of choice tho in the set menu. A choice between 2 tapas, 2 entrees and 2 desserts.
Service was nothing special and the fake fire place on near the bar where i sit was nothing more than an ugly distraction and it was quite a turn off for more to come. Food was average and portion was too small. Wining pairing was less than spectacular for a place that sells wine as it's restaurant name. If this was a $15 menu, I might feel I can justify it but for $25, there is a lot of restaurant that have better quality food.
This was our first time going to Unwine'd. I have been looking at this place online for a few weeks and finally decided to try it with high expectations.
The ambiance of the place is quite nice. Nothing to write home about. There was a live DJ who arrived at 9:00, but didn't start DJ'ing until about 10:30.
The service was ok, it wasn't like she was rude or anything but when asked questions about the wine she didn't really have a clue. Also, when asked about menu items, she knew even less. I asked her if short ribs were beef or pork, she didn't know!!!
The food was the real disappointment. We tried to order 5 items, and 2 out of 5 were not avaliable. It was a Friday night and they ran out of pommes frites and creme brulee! How is it possible to be so unprepared as to run out of potatoes and one of the very few desserts they have? The halibut was decent but quite pricey for what it was. The ribs turned out to be beef, however they were chewy and the portion was smaller than expected for price/tapas.
Overall, it was not a winner and I will not be going back to Unwine'd to wine or dine.
Totally disappointed by this place...the seating is uncomfortable... there is NO bread before the appy...the appy can be finished in one bite...but it was quite good (crab cake).. the other two appys was not good...
main course... the tenderlion was quite good but very very small portions... and done different.. some were really well cooked.. some were really raw.. (and NO u don't get to pick how its done)...
the AHI TUNA is a DISASTER...NO TASTE PERIOD. its like a piece of RAW fish sprinkled with a lot of sesame seeds... that is IT..
dessert was ok...nothing special.
overall, DO NOT come here...and waste ur money on small portions of tasteless food...
had to go out for late night drive thru right after the meal... even the girls wasn't close to being full..
I came here for Dine Out Vancouver 2009, and the menu looked so enticing. I got the ratatouille for appetizer...it came out lukewarm and mildly flavoured. For the main course, I got pork confit. Again, it was lukewarm, and the meat was disgustingly tough with no flavour - I could barely cut through it. The dessert was probably the worst. It's supposed to be a warm chocolate cake and it came out COLD. It tasted even worst than the premixed chocolate cakes I've made at home. Did their oven break or something? Or their microwave was not strong enough to eat up premade food????
The service was awful. I came here with 5 other 22 year old girls and the waitress (who could not have been older than 30) talked to us like we were children. When she asked us how our dessert was, we told her it was cold, to which she said and did nothing.
The worst part? They added a 15% mandatory service charge to our bill...the dine out price of $28 is really over $35. I feel like I have been cheated. I could have gone to Mcdonald's and have gotten a more satisfying experience and better service (at least their fries are piping hot).
I am never coming back to this restaurant again, and I hope none of you go here either.
Yes. Go and relax. Let them work for you and you will be in haven.
There's a band playng without bother you, not annoyng like others place. The ambience is classic, but not heavy or dark, service very friendly, just need to be more knowledgeble about the wine list and cocktails, and not serve only water. Washrooms always cleaned. Lets talk about the food... Starts with a well design menu, and then the appies. All good but if you try the crab cakes WOW - best in town. Main dishes are impecable, taste and presentation. Sorry americans chefs but in Vancouver you guys can learn too.The menu different og the decro is very modern, "dynamic" I'd say. Did you try the creme brulee in 3 differents versions, NO? You have to, is amazing.
One of the best place in Vancouver, for sure.
First off, I must agree with previous review. Our servers wine knowledge was non-existent. Normally that would not bother me so much, but considering its name, and the fact that it's basically a wine bar, expectations are changed. In this situation, if anything, the server should know all about the wines offered.
Example, they had two different Concha y Toro wines available, but she couldnt tell us what the difference was between the two wines.
The design of the space looks like it was taken out of a design catalogue, very sterile and lacking any emotion or feeling. Looks nice in a photo, but is not inviting in reality.
No real complaints on the food, though again, it sounds better on the menu that what is being executed. Perhaps their aspirations are greater than their abilities.
I think one visit here was more than enough.
We had such high hopes for this, but seemed thwarted at every turn. The server was friendly, but it unfortunately was her first day, and she seemed just thrown in to fend for herself. Ahi tuna was amazingly bland, desert was uninteresting, and appetizers were the best part in comparison, though nothing earth-shattering. Truly a disappointment.
I just loved this restaurant, we went as a group to try the fondue menu....it was fabulous, so much fun and a very social evening!
The atmosphere was so chilled, yet sophisticated. The staff were super friendly and couldn't do enough for you.
We had a mix of fondue and the regular menu at out table, but there was still plenty to go around. Its the 2nd or 3rd time I've been to UnWine'd and I always have the crab cakes...Yummy!
The dessert fondue is to die for and the Smores - such a tough decision!!
My company's LARGE Christmas party was hosted here recently on Dec 13th 2008. We booked out the entire place and we all had an AMAZING time. I have to say a HUGE thank you to all the staff at UnWine'd for how incredible and efficiently everything was handled. Planning this party was a breeze thanks to Rachelle and Arnie and anyone else at UnWine'd that went out of their way to make our Christmas party exactly what we had wished for. We were quite the picky planners and I would have to say that everything completely met our high expectations.
The food was incredible (we opted for the buffet). I myself heard many of the guests complimenting on how great everything tasted. The ambiance was warm, inviting and it really made our evening special. The chefs took special care when it came to some allergies we had mentioned. The final price for the party was very reasonable. The layout of the restaurant really made for a great mingling atmosphere and our after dinner dance party.
UnWine'd is not only great for a large corporate party; but also a few of my fellow co-workers, including myself, have eaten at this venue before on a few occasions and I would have to say we've always been happy with the food and service.
So thank you everyone at UnWine'd! We WILL be RETURNING!!!
I was at UnWine'd last Friday and to my surprise, they have a new chef which is exactly what that place needs. The food change from water to wine ( no pun intended ). Really good lobster ravioli and the duck sausage is to die for. Service hasn't changed much ( not good but not too bad), they are still friendly but need more knowledge of wines and table service. At the end of our meal the chef came out to check on us which made us feel really important and he is a nice person, I think he is from South America.
All and all; this restaurant changed to the Better!!!
