Located at Van Dusen Gardens, Truffles Fine Foods offers a menu of high quality, freshly made, gourmet sandwiches, salads, soups, baked goods and more.
If you want to experience 'Afternoon Tea' for the first time, do not come here. The service level is missing and the offerings are barely traditional. Our party of 4 was disappointed to not be given a choice of teas and the tea that we did get had a lovely description (black tea infused with lavendar), but was brewed so weakly that I could not detect a flavour. The sandwiches of pulled pork and an Italian sampler were very good, but not even close to traditional in content or appearance. The menu does indicate a croissant divided into portions, but we still found it looking so unfinished on the plate (it was delicious though). And the menu says 'strawberry jam', but we received some kind of a citrus marmalade, which was OK, but so different when you are expecting strawberry! The honey was divine.
The dining area consisted of small, wobbly, aluminum, square tables with chairs in a bright, noise prone cafeteria setting that just wasn't suitable for an 'Afternoon Tea'. We regularly had to find staff to address our requests, possibly due to a busy event going on this Sunday, and I was disheartened to find one helper (can't call her a 'server') just standing near the food display area instead of checking on us and other diners, or circulating the tables for those in need of cleaning. At about $15 per person, 'Afternoon Tea' was quite inexpensive, so I guess you get what you pay for.
A friend and I went to the VanDusen Gardens but stopped first at the Cafe for some coffee - and noticed their new picnic basket deal: $58 for 2 admissions to the Gardens, a basket full of food and drink, blanket, and cutlery. It was fantastic - the sandwiches were fresh and tasty, the homemade cookies were delicious, got our coffee fix, and enjoyed lunch in the Gardens. Highly recommend this!
We had mother's day brunch at Truffles, and it was such a treat to enjoy tasty delicacies on the patio, looking out at the gorgeous VanDusen Gardens. Everyone was so friendly, and the food tasted great. Afterwards, we had an amazing walk through the Gardens - and came back for tea!
