Used to love True Confections - we lived near the Denman store, would always take out of town guests there for a post-dinner treat. Now I doubt we will ever go back. Most recent poor experience was at the Alma Store. Most notable problem is the ever-rising price of the desserts. Do they think no one notices? And if you are going to have such exorbitant prices, please make sure your staff is on-the-ball and gets my order right the first time. Too bad.
It's been a while since I went here and there's a reason. I remember their cheesecakes were pretty good. Pretty filling and cheesy.
However, I started to become disappointed w/ their cakes. Their devil's food became only 3 layers, whereas it should be 6 or 7. Also, their frostings on every single cake are REALLY HARD. you basically only eat the cake but not the frosting.
I've never had bad service here. But if you like a moist cake w/ edible frosting, do not go here.
It felt strange to be waited on when all I wanted was a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. The cakes were sitting behind the glass counter by the entrance which I could have pointed to, on my way in, for slicing and taken to my seat with no need for the masquerade of a tableside service. Maybe if someone opened a restaurant and served only appetizers and had waiters come by and take your order for drinks and food, it would also be seen as weird. Oh, wait a minute, someone did. It’s called a bar. Perhaps it’s the ubiquity of the self-service coffeehouse that puts me at odds with accepting wait-staff for coffee and cake. The cakes—we tried three kinds—like their prices (room on the bandwagon?), were decadent and cloying.
It's hard to swallow the prices at this place when just dessert costs $10. For $10 I could enjoy a nice breakfast elsewhere.
If two people go here, for the price of two slices of cake they could pick up a whole small cake at another bakery.
The economics of scale here are just baffling.
Yet on a Friday night the place was busy. Vancouverites who overpay just ruin it for everyone.
The cakes were good, when is cake not good. However especially at these prices it damn well be edible.
If you add drinks to your order dessert alone would run over $30 at this place for two people. Very expensive date.
The ambiance is nothing to write home about. It's located on Denman which isn't the greatest part of downtown.
Honestly I have no clue why they can justify charging their prices.
Also they have huge customized take-out boxes for cake slices. And if you take out from this place you still pay regular price. It would make sense to me that if you take out cake the price should be halved after all you are not sitting in. However they charge regular price for take-out.
It seems to be the worst business model however this place is still around and is doing well enough. I don't understand why.
Seems like I should have read some of the other reviews before I went...
Like the other reviewers, I found that the level of service and food had gone down drastically in the last two years. I went in today to grab a slice of my two old favourites (devils food cake and banana cream), only to find a dirty place, about three tables filled, rest empty, staffed by two nonchalant servers. No greeting at the door, no acknowledgment of new customers whatsoever. I should have walked out right then and there but I waited to be seated. I dont mind waiting but I stood there for almost three minutes without a hello or a smile, uncertain as to what I was supposed to do, considering that usually the hostess greets you right away at most places.
An young asian man and woman, both with glasses, were working (not saying their asian background had anything to do with the service, just as a description). They were both rude and seemed to not care about the customers. The female hostess/server sauntered over (after finishing a conversation with the male, another worker) and said, "how many?" no hello or smile, still! she then proceeded to plunk down the menus at a table and left.
I sat there for twenty minutes trying to catch the eye of the server to order. She was too busy chatting with her coworker. By this time, an older man emerged from the back, only to see me and my friend leave. I hope he was the manager because I was extremely angry at the poor service at this place. I didn't want to pay $10 for a slice of cake that would be served in such a poor manner, at a dusty old place.
I'm disappointed to see how bad this place has gotten - I sent my boyfriend later that night to get some cake (take away) because I was still craving some, and the slices have gotten so thin! (although the prices remain the same).
I can't believe they think they can run a business like this... I hope they go out of business, because their customers are really getting the raw end of the deal. $10 for pre-frozen cake that they thaw and serve with such cr*appy attitude? No thanks!
will not be going back, and will be warning others of the poor quality!
This place have a wide selection of cakes and also offers coffee and other drinks beside them. The quality of cakes is nothing special and it is little bit better than safeway cakes. The portions are pretty large but you should pay more than 8 ~ 9 dollar for a large portion which is too much in my opinion considering the quality. The drinks are also expensive. Expect to pay around 3 for fresh coffee and more than 4 for espresso/latte.
i had the chocolate orange cake the other night.. i been eating this cake for many years. This time it was dry, frosting was hard, 30% smaller, no whipped creme and service took for ever. I went there on a friday night that there was seats available right away. Now i know why.
This has been one of my fav place to go for many year... i think due to the change in god knows what (owner, management, chef?). I rather have cake from safeway for 1/4 of the price and 4x the flavor..
Came here for a first date, thought it would be a really nice place to go for an afternoon date. The various selection of cakes was nice, however, the price does not reflect the quality of the cake. I love desserts and I was really unimpressed by the quality.
Don't think I'll come back here and will not recommend others to come here, unless they drop the prices dramatically.
I used to come here with my mom and her friends when I was younger. It was such a treat to indulge in a huge slice of moist cake that I would have to take out after to enjoy because it was That Big.
I came a few years ago and still thought it was delcious, but man, have things changed.
We entered and waited and started looking at the cakes. No hello, or anything...Just a cold, mean woman at the cash register and a girl behind the cooler. It was cold outside, but the chill in here were just as bad.
My fiance wanted to leave right away, but I was determined to order some cake to go. The Chocolate Hazelnut cake called out to me. It looked so delicious and tall. I thought for sure it was going to be yummy. About $9.00 after tax.
All boxed and ready, we paid the rude woman and went to the car. At home, I tried the cake (THIN- 2 inches at the outside tapering to a pointed wedge that was almost see-thru)...It was SOOO dry and sweet, I almost choked and needed to grab a glass of milk. Gross.
Not the same as before and definitely not going back.
