EST. 1988; "Largest dessert selection in Canada"; "All items are made from scratch on the premises, using only pure, fresh ingredients. True Confections commitment to quality allows no preservatives, no fillers, no stabilizers and no compromise..."
We just came from True Confections, got sat down in almost one of the worst tables, and my mom and I got up and moved to a window table, of which there were 5000 empty ones. It then took another 10 minutes for a different waiter to serve us. We chose specifically to try their special advertised -- 5.99 strawberry cheesecake. After deciding on drinks, we were told they had no more strawberry cheesecake. I then asked if we could get another kind for the same price, and were told "I'm not authorized to do that".
I would say that this is false advertising. I will never patronize them again.
Used to love True Confections - we lived near the Denman store, would always take out of town guests there for a post-dinner treat. Now I doubt we will ever go back. Most recent poor experience was at the Alma Store. Most notable problem is the ever-rising price of the desserts. Do they think no one notices? And if you are going to have such exorbitant prices, please make sure your staff is on-the-ball and gets my order right the first time. Too bad.
A late night sweet tooth craving brought us here. We've been to the other location many times before so it seemed to make sense to finally try this one out.
The quality is roughly the same as the other location, but $11 for a 2" (at the thickest point) slice of cake is absurd, considering the quality of these cakes compare with grocery store finds (I imagine you'd find the same shtick at the Alma one). The peanut butter frosting on the cheesecake was hard while the cake portion of the classic was dry and crumbly, good signs that these sat in the window for more than just a few days. Subsequently, the peanut butter cheesecake and the classic cheesecake we ordered had a heavy dose of buyer's remorse.
Service is minimal, just enough to meet all the prerequisites for a nice experience.
One of the most blatant restaurant gouging acts yet. Sans them altogether and get a cake from Safeway instead.
This place have a wide selection of cakes and also offers coffee and other drinks beside them. The quality of cakes is nothing special and it is little bit better than safeway cakes. The portions are pretty large but you should pay more than 8 ~ 9 dollar for a large portion which is too much in my opinion considering the quality. The drinks are also expensive. Expect to pay around 3 for fresh coffee and more than 4 for espresso/latte.
Fresh and real ingredients do make a difference. We had dessert here last night and enjoyed every bite.
My friends and I tried the white chocolate raspberry cheesecake, tiramisu cheesecake and the banana cream pie. The pie had tons of banana in it and the cheesecakes had "weight" (as in, made with real cheese and no fillers) but were still fluffy. Also had the coffee, Vancouver Fog, House Chai and Italian Soda. I was a little disappointed the Italian Soda didn't come with whipped cream, but it was still good. Drinks were of a higher quality.
As with previous reviewers, I agree that the price is a little steep at almost ten bucks a piece. They do have daily features for six or seven bucks and I really think that is more of a reasonable price point. I guess if they upped their (currently very reasonable) drink prices, and dropped a couple bucks on the desserts, it might make the menu look a bit friendlier.
Will be back.
It's hard to swallow the prices at this place when just dessert costs $10. For $10 I could enjoy a nice breakfast elsewhere.
If two people go here, for the price of two slices of cake they could pick up a whole small cake at another bakery.
The economics of scale here are just baffling.
Yet on a Friday night the place was busy. Vancouverites who overpay just ruin it for everyone.
The cakes were good, when is cake not good. However especially at these prices it damn well be edible.
If you add drinks to your order dessert alone would run over $30 at this place for two people. Very expensive date.
The ambiance is nothing to write home about. It's located on Denman which isn't the greatest part of downtown.
Honestly I have no clue why they can justify charging their prices.
Also they have huge customized take-out boxes for cake slices. And if you take out from this place you still pay regular price. It would make sense to me that if you take out cake the price should be halved after all you are not sitting in. However they charge regular price for take-out.
It seems to be the worst business model however this place is still around and is doing well enough. I don't understand why.
It's been a while since I went here and there's a reason. I remember their cheesecakes were pretty good. Pretty filling and cheesy.
However, I started to become disappointed w/ their cakes. Their devil's food became only 3 layers, whereas it should be 6 or 7. Also, their frostings on every single cake are REALLY HARD. you basically only eat the cake but not the frosting.
I've never had bad service here. But if you like a moist cake w/ edible frosting, do not go here.
Seems like I should have read some of the other reviews before I went...
Like the other reviewers, I found that the level of service and food had gone down drastically in the last two years. I went in today to grab a slice of my two old favourites (devils food cake and banana cream), only to find a dirty place, about three tables filled, rest empty, staffed by two nonchalant servers. No greeting at the door, no acknowledgment of new customers whatsoever. I should have walked out right then and there but I waited to be seated. I dont mind waiting but I stood there for almost three minutes without a hello or a smile, uncertain as to what I was supposed to do, considering that usually the hostess greets you right away at most places.
An young asian man and woman, both with glasses, were working (not saying their asian background had anything to do with the service, just as a description). They were both rude and seemed to not care about the customers. The female hostess/server sauntered over (after finishing a conversation with the male, another worker) and said, "how many?" no hello or smile, still! she then proceeded to plunk down the menus at a table and left.
I sat there for twenty minutes trying to catch the eye of the server to order. She was too busy chatting with her coworker. By this time, an older man emerged from the back, only to see me and my friend leave. I hope he was the manager because I was extremely angry at the poor service at this place. I didn't want to pay $10 for a slice of cake that would be served in such a poor manner, at a dusty old place.
I'm disappointed to see how bad this place has gotten - I sent my boyfriend later that night to get some cake (take away) because I was still craving some, and the slices have gotten so thin! (although the prices remain the same).
I can't believe they think they can run a business like this... I hope they go out of business, because their customers are really getting the raw end of the deal. $10 for pre-frozen cake that they thaw and serve with such cr*appy attitude? No thanks!
will not be going back, and will be warning others of the poor quality!
I used to come here ages ago when the service was really good and the cakes were fantastic. It used to be a wonderful place to go after dinner or for a weekend mid-day treat. All I can say now is, what a complete turn-around.
The cakes still look delicious, but the quality is not the same and the prices have increased unbefittingly for the scaled-back portions. There just seems to be something 'missing'. Perhaps the complacent "I don't give a crap" attitudes of the servers has a lot to do with it, but the last time I went there with my mom, we practically had our food shoved at us and we waited forever for a cup of tea and a coffee...
I know there are far better places downtown to get dessert where it won't cost upwards of $35 for two pieces of cake and a cup of tea or coffee.
I definitely will not return.
I used to come here with my mom and her friends when I was younger. It was such a treat to indulge in a huge slice of moist cake that I would have to take out after to enjoy because it was That Big.
I came a few years ago and still thought it was delcious, but man, have things changed.
We entered and waited and started looking at the cakes. No hello, or anything...Just a cold, mean woman at the cash register and a girl behind the cooler. It was cold outside, but the chill in here were just as bad.
My fiance wanted to leave right away, but I was determined to order some cake to go. The Chocolate Hazelnut cake called out to me. It looked so delicious and tall. I thought for sure it was going to be yummy. About $9.00 after tax.
All boxed and ready, we paid the rude woman and went to the car. At home, I tried the cake (THIN- 2 inches at the outside tapering to a pointed wedge that was almost see-thru)...It was SOOO dry and sweet, I almost choked and needed to grab a glass of milk. Gross.
Not the same as before and definitely not going back.
I don't think I will ever go back again. I've tried this place twice at the Denman location and each time is more disappointing that the one before. So you know, I have also gone to the Point Grey location in the past as well. I find the Denman location is just poor overall compare to the other location.
Why am I so disappointed? I went to the Denman location 2 weeks ago (day before New Year's Eve). When my boyfriend and I walked in, the restaurant was only 70% filled, it was not that busy. It took 5 minutes to get us seated and that was understandable. We decided to try their holiday special cakes. I ordered a "Mango White Chocolate Cheesecake" and a tea and my boyfriend also ordered a cake and tea.
The tea came first and 15 minutes later the server came back with 2 cakes. My cake was served on a white plate. She served it just the cake and leftout the sauce. I thought that was strange but I took a bite anyways. Once I tasted the cake, I knew that was not right.
I called the server back and told her that's just a white chocolate cake and not what I ordered. She responded by pointed at the top of the cake and said that the small thin slice is the mango. I looked at her and thought that was strange and asked her about the mango sauce that was suppose to go with the cake and she again responded with dismay and said that:
she ran out of the mango sauce so she decided to leave out the sauce and not provide me with any. I was so shocked with her respond so I asked again if there was any sauce, and she insisted that they ran out of mango sauce but they have other sauce. At that point I was very confused, she wasn`t offering me any options at all to the cake. She just stood there and blankly looked at me. So I ended up telling her that I do not want this cake and told her to take it away. She did not say anything after that and took it away. She ended up staying away from our table the rest of the night.
I find her service very poor and unbelievable. First of all, she did not come back and tell me that they ran out of sauce before she serve me the dessert. And she did not offer me another sauce in replace of the mango sauce. She also did not offer me the menu when she found out that she was out of sauce. I did not have the opportunity to get another dessert. After I confronted her about the cake, she again did not offer me another sauce nor did she offer to bring the menu so I can change it to something else.
After she took my dessert away, I ended up taking a few bites of my boyfriend`s dessert but mostly I just drank my tea quickly so that we can leave once my boyfriend is done. I was very disappointed that she did not serve me.
I am frustrated not because only about the sauce. It is about the sauce, but it is more about how I was served. I did not have a dessert that night because she did not serve me well., I can dare say that no other dessert restaurants would have treated their customer this way. I understand that they are understaffed but this is not the way you treat any customer.
I would never go back to that location again.
My first visit here was encouraged by the delicious looking cake in the display windows ; the 'cool' arty coffee shop vibe gleaned from glancing in the window ; nice decor.
But the service leaves a lot to be desired. On my two visits there (both take out, as i couldnt persuade my boyfriend to sit in) i was left waiting at the door for at least five minutes. After grabbing a cake menu, i eventually was asked to order, at the cash register, where i waited a further few minutes.
This wouldnt really both me if the food had been worth it.
i can't remember how much i paid exactly, it was between 8-10 dollars for ONE slice of cake! Which again, i wouldn't have minded except the slice in question was very small! It's crazy to charge THAT much for one very slim, piece of cake. I got the chocolate orange on the last occasion, which wasnt actually too nice, kind of dry.
I vowed never to go back there again, and i never will.
Walk down to Acacia on Denman (its inbetween fatburger and delaneys) and sample some of their gorgeous, home made deserts for a half or third of the price.
Been going here for 8-10yrs now. They are known for their huge tall cakes.
But now, it doesn't matter anymore b/c the prices have gone up dramatically and the service is pretty much non-existent.
I used to order the mudpie (heated) w/ ice-cream and now it's costing me $9. So that's almost $20 for a couple and that's just dessert! Even a 5-star restaurant don't charge that much!
Last time I went was a slow day and the lady working there, which looked very out of place, was slow and sloppy. Like she just came out of her bed. She looked sick and miserable which made me feel so disgusted. When the bill came, she didn't even thank us. It was such a horrible experience that I will never go there again. It's kinda sad b/c I've been such a loyal customer. You can read the other reviews, the manager/owner really don't care about their customers. I wrote a complaint many months ago and they didn't write back yet.
They have lots to work on.
I've always heard about this place having the best desserts. Definitely not true. I went to the Denman location and the Broadway location.
The cakes were way below my expectations. I can say honestly that they were the worst cake I had eaten. They were dry and sugary, lacking any notable flavour, and the icing just added to the sweetness. They did look impressive in the displays, but then the slices were so thin! Definitely not worth the price. Their cheesecakes were ok, but they were nothing special. Better than what you get in the grocery store, but not quite worth the money.
I went there when it was quiet, and the service was good, the waitress was friendly. The decor was great, but then again, I don't go to a restaurant to enjoy the decor.
I've been there several times recently, but I only have bad memories. Once, I went there with a few friends, and we ordered a cup of coffee for each of us and a dessert to share. And the waitress bluntly said we had to order a minimum of $8 per each. We've been there many times and that was the first time we ever heard about such rules. It was quite afternoon with only a couple of tables occupied. I wouldn't bother mentioning such a minuscule thing if she was even polite or looked sorry. And I never had cakes I ordered without some trouble. Once, they wrote an entirely wrong name on the cake I ordered and I had to make several trips to finally get the cake making several calls, and their poor excuses were not even funny. I won't go there any more. It is very sorry to see once my favorite restaurant turning into mediocre restaurant.
Largest dessert selection? Maybe. Best desserts? Not quite.
This is the location I frequent the most, but after my experience this past weekend, I don't think I will be running back for desserts anytime soon.
I agree the pros of this place is the massive selection of different desserts and the fact that they are open until late is quite attractive, but that's basically where the list ends.
I walked in and proceeded to the cashier counter as always for take-out. I don't know if it's because they've made more room for tables, but the walkway is too smooshy. I barely made it there without being elbowed by the sitting patrons or almost being ran over by the server delivering desserts to tables.
I ordered my usual: Lemon Heaven cake and also a slice of Mocha Buttercream. I also have to add that everytime I came here for take-out, the servers are a little snappy with attitude ringing up the order - I have no idea why. Is it because I'm not eating in (tipping)? Is it because I'm invading their cashier's space (lack of space elsewhere)? Anyway $19 later, I'm handed the bill and notice that, yet again, they've raised the prices! I understand the price of flour has gone up, but seriously...$10 for a slice of cake is pretty ridiculous. In fact, the size has gotten smaller too! The thickest part of the cake was no more than 1".
I just couldn't believe, that upsale restaurants offer extravagant desserts for around the same price. I wonder if the price increases have anything to do with the change in packaging of take-out boxes (rather cute, btw).
My Lemon Heaven was still tasty, but at those prices, I'd much prefer to drive over to Sweet Obsessions.
Go here a lot because I live close by. My favourite is the English trifle. A little cup packed with cake, fruits, and custard. The sherry is a great touch. However, I find that the quality is not consistent. Usually the server asks me if I want whipped cream on top and I don't take any. The last time I went, she didn't ask and I forgot to mention it. When I took off the whipped cream, I found that it hid a multitude of sins. She had butchered the dessert into a disgusting mix of the forementioned. The sherry was also missing. The service was absent despite the place having only 2 customers. I was very disappointed and wouldn't go there again anytime soon.
My friend and I were attracted by the tall cakes in the display fridge as we walked by the restaurant and decided to give it a try.
We ordered a blueberry cheesecake and a chocolate mouse cake to share. Both cakes were extremely rich and not too sweet, the way I like it. Only gripe is the price. If I remember correctly, the cake cost about $7 a piece.
Glad I do not live anywhere near Denman - not good for my waistline ;-)
I love their Strawberry Shortcake, and few has beat their warmed apple pie with delicious creamy vanilla ice cream. However, everything else is just too rich, too sweet, and too standard. It's way overrated, and there are better places to go for dessert as there are more competition that opened up. Years ago, there was only just True Confections--not many other choices. Unfortunately, "Not Just Desserts" was less known and not at a favourable location, and they've closed down since then. Unless they've relocated and renamed. Their cakes were always superb and just perfect.
Went two times, but had same dessert, strawberry shortcake. It was excellent, huge portions, fresh ingredients, and yummy. First time we went, waiter was great, second was average. Would recommend for anyone who loves desserts!!
