Bakery - Sweet Shop. Open daily from 11:00am to 9:00pm.
Decided to drop by for a sweet treat after dining on Poutine at the nearby Belle Patate.
The cakes all looked delicious. The female server was polite and patient with my two preschool age children.
When ordering, I asked for coffee. As it was later in the evening (getting close to closing time), the server advised that she was out, but would be happy to brew some more.
The cakes were delicious, not too sweet and with nice texture. MMMMMmmmm.
The server delivered my coffee, asked if I needed cream or sugar and also advised to let her know if it was too strong (she would have made it weaker for me). I happen to like strong, black coffee and thought that it tasted absolutely perfect.
The cakes were generous in size and my husband entered the shop from the patio where we were eating and got a box to take the rest home. The server came out and advised us not to worry about cleaning the table of plates, forks, etc and that she would do that.
The service was excellent, the product was excellent, the value was solid.
I will be back.
I went to this place based on the strong review from the previous esteemed writer. The bakery has a small seating area inside and there is a shared patio in front. I found it to be clean and the owner (who comes from Romania) was very friendly. I had a variety of cakes including the chocolate rum cake, hazelnut (also with rum), coconut peach cake and a chocolate eclair. All were delicious and I was fortunate that I could share them with Mrs. C and some friends. I don't think I could eat here regularly, because the cakes are a little too rich for my taste, but for a decadent treat I would consider this place again. Plus it wasn't too expensive considering the portion sizes.
Every time I walk by this little bakery on the corner of Davie and Thurlow, my stomach fills with hunger pains. The aroma of freshly baked goods puts you in a trance and before you know it, you're in line for the goodies.
The rum soaked cake I had was super moist (understandably) and delicious, though a tad bit too sweet. You must have a ton of self-control before coming here, the choices are many and difficult to have just one. Definitely not for the dieter.
Unfortunately, I'm no longer in the area as frequent as I used to be, but the next time I will have to try their traditional roll-up cone pastry. The owner is super nice and will explain any pastry to those unfamiliar.
A small local bakery run by people who work hard and take great pride in what they make.
Food: They use good ingredients and their cakes and breads are made fresh and you can definitely taste the difference. Everything we've tried so far is yummy. Not too sweet and not greasy. Our faves are the Kurtos colak, which the owners bake in this barbeque contraption, resulting in this cone shaped bread/cake, hollow inside but outside is carmelized and lightly covered in finely chopped nuts. Then there is the cremes cake with layers of creamy custard separated by light phyllo pastry topped with fresh whipped cream or the boema cake with a light chocolate mousse layer over chocolate sponge cake all topped with fresh whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Of course, they also make the best tiramisu I've ever tasted.
Service: Great service. The owners are friendly and neighbourly. The BF and I purchased dessert to go late one summer evening. After carefully packing up our dessert, one of the owners (the husband) realized he did not have sufficient change and we unfortunately did not have any change. So, he smiled and said "...no problem, why don't you come back tomorrow to pay. Enjoy your dessert!" We were floored! Of course, we returned the very next day to make our payment and to purchase more goodies. We now go regularly and have stopped buying dessert anywhere else.
Value: Good value considering the skill, service, fresh ingredients and delicious final product!
Ambience: The bakery is tiny but clean. The owners' friendliness and warmth more than makes up for the basic decor.
We stopped by the other day to try out some of the treats at this new little West End Gem. All I can say is WOW, we picked up a selection of squares to try out and they were all amazing. The cake is so very light and soft and the one custard like slice was mmmm good. A nice variety, and not the same thing every other bakery on the street has. They have one neat looking cake that is coiled like a spring that I'm sure would knock your socks off, I can imagine serving it filled with whip cream and fresh fruit. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and serving size. I think they offer some fresh sandwiches and savoury items as well, this place is a welcome addition to the Davie village.
The cakes are made with care, but the price is reasonable. The texture of the cakes are soft and fluffy and moist. When I came in, the variety of cakes didn't look very appealing, just like some common cakes. I thought the taste would also be so so. But I was wrong. They are very flavorful, not too sweet, but not bland. You can really taste the flavour described on each cake. The cream is not too heavy, so 4 cakes won't make me sick of cream. The waiter was friendly and patient.
