Toratatsu is the newest Japanese Izakaya or Japanese Tapas Bistro, as they like to call it, on Denman Street. They soft-launched on Monday, June 11th, from the location of the former Clove Restaurant on Denman.
Ended up here for an impromptu birthday dinner.
As it was Monday night, place was rather empty for 6 PM, however, I won't complain since we had the attention of 3 waiters.
Had the prawn tempura with chili mayo: thought there was a little too much tempura dough and the chili mayo was a tad too spicy. Birthday girl wanted California roll which they didn't have (yes, I know it's not a real Japanese thing) but we got smoked salmon and cream cheese sushi instead which was pretty good. They bring it around and flame it in front of you so a nice novelty touch.
House sake is decent; nice selection of wines as well.
We had warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream for desert and the waiters came around our table to sing Happy Birthday to our girl. Definitely good service, very friendly, attentive and polite.
All in all, nothing to go out of your way to experience but if you are in the area, give it a shot.
I have been wanting to come here for months and finally I came with my bf and 2 other friends last night. We had very high expectations as we looked at the menu online and it seemed to be great. The 1st dish we had was sea urchin ($10), I thought it would come in 4 slices/order just like other japanese restaurants. Instead only 2 slices came per order and the sea urchin (uni) was smaller compared to other restaurants. Next, we had the amaebi which was very sweet and big and also it came in 4 pieces which was very cheap for the mere $10. They also went another level with the amaebi by deep frying the heads. The risotto there was misleading as it was not aborio rice and therefore it wasn't cooked properly as in al dente. The scallop in the risotto was a perfect example of cardboard scallop (overly cooked). The beef carpaccio should be avoided by all means, it was too thick, very chewy from the tendon and basically it took us 2 to 3 mins to chew down 1 slice of carpaccio. The yellowtail was alright but I didn't really like it, they are ok with it though. The black cod was mediocre, just a normal jap style black cod. The ebi mayo was pretty good considering that the prawn was big and the sauce was a little spicy. The smoked duck breast was just ok since I've had way better (the best) duck breast in 14981 in White Rock. Would I come back again? Maybe not unless I crave amaebi in the middle of the night.
We were lucky enough to finally go to Tora after almost a year at D&R. Down here we are spoilt for choice with regards to really good Japanese Tapas (Guu, Kingyo, Hapa etc), and after trying all of these i can say Tora is the best.
The food is magnificent. Menu is what you'd expect from a JTapas place, but the attention to detail and flavour fusions are mouthwatering.
The service at these places is always friendly and vocal, and this experience did not disappoint, from the boistrous greeting to the special touch of a mini mandarin to take for the walk home.
The ambience is superb (i very rarely give 5s for anything). mood lighting, quiet music, great decorations, AND NO TVs TO BE SEEN!! Take note Vancouver.
So, in short, next time you're in line for Guu w Garlic, head a block towards Denman, take a right and its a block on your left. Just do it, you will not regret it.
PS. Biggest Ebi Mayo ever.
The place is small and the food is overpriced! It's a nice little bar-like atmosphere to unwind and have a few drinks though but I don't think I would come here for a full-on dinner course as the tapas are quite expensive compared to the surrounding Japanese izakaya places.
Service was 'ok', I guess they were busy attending to a big table of drunken Japanese students on the other side of the restaurant. So they didn't come around as often as I would have liked, my drinks were empty for long intervals.
Probably wouldn't go out of the way to visit this place again but if I happen to pass by I wouldnt mind popping in for a few drinks. When is the main restaurant (Chopstick) going to re-open??
I loved going to Clove and when it closed I was disappointed but I'm glad Toratatsu took it's spot! They are open late, serving food and drink, the prices are reasonable and the place is pretty funky. I recommend the Negitoro Avocado, it's delicious! The Ebi Chili Mayo is the best I've ever had, the prawns are just huge. Their chilled sake in the live bamboo shoot for $9 is awesome. I highly recommend this place, and will continue to go!
We went there for the 1st time 2 days ago, tables were all full, our table was probably the last table.
Maybe because it was busy, services were really not the best, they were rather slow but friendly.
We started with the cheese tofu, very smooth and well balanced taste with a drizzle of honey on top. Nice and refreshing.
Then we also has chicken wings, it was okay, nothing too special. Ribs, again, nothing too special but it tasted good.
Miso glazed sablefish with sweet potato puree was really charming and their pork hot pot was really yummy too!
Tiger prawns mayo were well cooked good sized king prawns.
we ended off with the tofu cheese cake, it was good but too similar with the cheese tofu appie.
For 2 people it came to about $65 with no alcohol.... not too bad is it?! Will definitely be back again.
Like the reviewer below, I was getting a little tired of Gyoza King and Hapa (which I both still like) so had to try this place. The decor is cool and comfy. The service friendly (always smiling) and the food was great! familiar dishes like Agedashi Tofu but with a twist (yama imo potato on top with tasty sauce). We also had the daikon salad (those are little fish sprinkled on top) which was so good, had to order a second. The Ishiyaki rice was similar to Hapa's and the Yaki Onigiri's has seasoned veggies mixed in. Total bill for two adults and three kids (w/L sake) = just over $72. We will be back!!
I am a fan of Hapa Izakaya and Gyoza King down the street on Robson, so I decided to give Toratatsu a try. We got their early and they had a happy hour special menu which has some cheaper items until 7pm. We ordered the sashimi platter, Tokyo ribs, ebi chilli mayo and the sable fish. (And a couple large bottles of Sapporo of course.) The food was all good and fresh. The service was good up until we wanted our bill when our waitress was nowhere to be found, but it wasn't a big deal. Overall, I would definitely return.
Went here twice and both times were wonderful. I find this place serves some unique dishes. Better than Hapa or Guu (they're getting kinda boring and I can't stand lining up). Toratatsu is a small place, has good looking waitresses, not too noisy and comfy.
I've tried the tuna w/ fried avocado, pork ribs w/ miso teriyaki, cheese tofu, edamame, salad, saba and kimchi rice bowl. Every dish was very delicious. My fave will be everything but edamame b/c they put too much seasalt on it. Other than that, they all taste PERFECT.
I'm surprised that they don't have people lining out the door!
Totally recommend this place.
Went with a group of friends. I was impressed with some dishes, dissappointed with some. The ebi mayo was good although 2 pieces per serving is a tad too tiny and the spicy sauce that came with it was good but not unique cuz its also served at mother ship Shiru Bay. I did enjoy the scallop carpaccio. Our server was not too knowledgable but she was not rude. The shocked of the evening was there was no sake which I found to be rather disturbing for a Japanese restaurant not to have any sake at all. It's like a Mexican joint saying sorry no salsa today. Other than that, we had fun, it was really more of the company I was with, the restaurant was rather blah. It is not a full fledged izakaya (like Guu or Hapa) but for what it is trying to be I think it failed. If you read my other reviews, you'd know I love all things remotely izakaya so writing this was hard. I do think the menu needs to be revamped and maybe one day I might return but for now...nah, other better places to go.
