Serving Cantonese cuisine including braised abalone, shark-fin soup, roast squab and dim sum during lunch hours.
After they renovated the restaurant few yrs ago, they've also changed the chef. Top Cantonese used to have the best dimsum - huge and delicious. The service was decent too.
their dimsum is deformed, unappealing and small.
Came here to celebrate Father's Day and there was a line-up minutes before opening. It's typical but now I'm starting to wonder why.
We got our seats and tea immediately; and that is my only compliments. The dimsum turned out as expected - below average. Sometimes I wonder why we keep coming back. I guess it's because it's in a convenient location.
After our meal, we asked for bill which we got it in seconds. I gave the guy my card and forgot to ask him for some take-out containers. I didn't wanna bug anyone, so I walked up to the cashier for it. The containers were right behind her. I politely asked for some and she goes,"wait a moment", and walks away. Ok, how much energy does it take to grab the freaken containers. I was about to step in and grab it myself. But then I saw a guy coming out of the kitchen so again, I kindly asked him. He slowly turned around, kicked some tissue off the floor, grabbed the containers and CHUCKED IT at me. Me, as a calm person (which I regret sometimes), tolerated his behavior and walked away. When I got to the table, the cashier (that walked away from me) was actually waiting for me to sign the card. Wth! My dad was like, "she's waiting for you." So I said angrily, "ofcourse! I was waiting for the take-out containers!" She did not say anything, probably because she wasn't even paying attention. I signed the receipt and left the tip on the table. I didn't wanna tip but my dad insisted. Seconds later, the cashier comes back and told me that I made a mistake. I pointed the tips on the table and she made a nervous laugh and said thanks.
Gosh, what a day. I was furious. I wanted to scream.
Went there late one night and had a few dishes. The squab was just OK but I understand they are famous for this dish so a bit dissapointing. Half baked salted chicken was really small and dry, very bad. Peatips with tofu was very good and large portion. Spareribs in orange sauce was just OK. Overall I would say an average chinese restaurant at best. Nothing to go out of the way for.
food is not worth the high price they marked.
the server has no smile or anythings on the face and rush to serve the dishes and clean the table as soon as they can.
none of their baby high chairs have the seat belt. i was wondering they took them away on purposes.
they required a large amount % tips which i think they are not deserved the tips at all.
Never go back to that place, and not recommended to other people as well.
It is o.k to have the menu written in chinese but it would be great if we can have someone keen in explaining the expensive menu to us in a friendly manner. He was no keen when I asked him to explain further.
Food was served in a hurry, the table was small for 5 people (Menu for 6 people) We felt that we were rushed to eat what is being served so the next one could be brought out.
Meal and drinks were pricy and food were not appealing.
1 felt they did not deserve a tip. The restaurant cashier demanded a larger % of tip. Too bad I should have made a scene.
We will NOT go back there again.
...shall we say mediocre. I attended a small (8 table) banquet a week ago. The service was attentive for a chinese restaurant. The food was served at a decent pace.
The food was OK but not impressive; at least not for the type of dishes you'd expect from a seafood-menu banquet. One complaint is that most of the dishes came in a soupy sauce. Good thing they kept swapping fresh plates and bowls throughout the meal. Sauce should be used to enhance and highlight the flavour of the dish, not drown it.
Another complaint is the physical layout. They had sectioned off the dining room so that our party had one side of the restaurant to ourselves...or so we thought....until we started noticing that the staff kept carting food to, and dirty dishes from, a small side door on the far side by walking right through our section in a diagonal path from the kitchen....and once in a while strangers would wander in and out of this door browsing through our 8-table party. I've never had this happen at any other banquet.
Not impressed, gave a good impression for the first minute, but changed dramatically. The table that was given was in a separate room. The worst tables were located there!! The room was not sanitary, full of flies and mosquitoes!! They swat the flies whilst people were eating!! The smell and ventilation was awful!! The waiters were rude and offensive. They spilt the food and still severed it, same goes for the water, spills on the table/turntable. The dinnerware was all dirty/greasy, and broken, same with the utensils. Would never recommend due to service and pricing of food!
Been coming here for family dinners for years now. The food is usually very good compared to other restuarants of similar price and food. The usual items are cold platter with the usual items but theres has smoked salmon sashimi, cream lobster with "raw" noodles bottom, peking duck 2 ways, squab, etc. We usually also pre order a freshly baked tapioca pudding without red bean which is sooo delish when its hot from the oven!
Our most recent visit was night, had a party of 6, ordered our usual items. Service was strangely attentive probably b/c it wasnt very busy being a monday night. We must have had our plates changed 4 or 5x! I say this with ethusiasm b/c we're used to waiting 1/2 hr even with a reservation or them trying to rush us out by making the food come all at once but this particular night was different. Overall, would recommend this restuarant b/c the food is good albeit service is not the greatest when they're busy but if your looking for a chinese banquet type dinner this is a great choice on kingsway.
The food is what stands out of this restaurant. I always get the crab in the hotpot and sharkfin soup! The service is not too great, the waitors are not very attentive. The ambiance is acceptable for a chinese restaurant. However, the price is on the high end side.
A two week renovation of this place has put some new touches on this restaurant. They have changed the carpet, put in some new chandeliers, some glass pieces and everything looks more clean. I did have a problem with those chandeliers though, they were so bright that it was hard to look up. However, speaking to one of the staff there, it seems they'll get some one to put in a dimmer switch for it.
For the food, still good quality, new steamers for the dim sum and no price hikes even after a renovation. No more carts as there is a sheet to mark what you want. They have a bunch of dim sum in the small category that are worth it with the amount you get with each one. There are also some new dishes and desserts on the menu now.
The place just seems more clean now, with all the work they did.
I just been to that restaurant tonight with some friends, it`s monday, the restsaurant looks very busy, we tried the daily soup , abalone and the pigeon, I can not belive in Vancouver have such good qulity pigeon, so juice and fresh, the abalone also very good tase, all the food tonight is very good ,we are so happy our friend take us to that restaurant, and the waiter told us the famous old chef come back , that`s why the food so good now, but the service not so good, maybe too busy, I will try their food again.
My family & I recently had dim sum lunch one weekend at this restaurant, and had the worst experience ever. The food was not bad, however, the service was very slow, and the restaurant staff's concept of customer service questionable.
They had missed one dish on our dim sum order, and even after more than 1/2 hr, the backordered item never arrived. Tired of waiting, we asked to cancel the backordered dish. The restaurant revised our bill to remove that one dish, worth $3.70, but then added a new surcharge of $3.70 labeled as VIP charge.
Meanwhile, the dish finally arrives, of which we consume as gestured by the apologetic waitress. Shortly, a newly revised bill with another $3.70 added again was sent to our table! The restaurant staff never acknowledged or even took responsibility for missing our order, and having us wait over 1/2 hr. THey decided it was best to keep charging us. Needless to say, we would NOT recommend going to this reataurant at all.
THE FOOD IS DEFINETLY REALLY REALLY GOOD THE PEACAN DUCK AND THE CRAB AND THE PRAWNS WITH SALAD DRESSING WITH ALMONDS IS SUPER GOOD
the only thing about this resturant is that you might get bad service its only because its soo damn busy in there all the time
the food is expensive but they wont scam you if you get king crab or something ! REALLY GOOD MUST TRY
My experience here was great! I thought the dim dum here was some of the best I've had in a really long time. The food came out hot and fresh, and the portion size was good but most importantly it was very tasty. I think it compares well with Sun Sui Wah (perhaps this is an exaggeration) but without the heavy price. I can't wait to go back next weekend to try more of their dim sum.
this used to be my Fav east side restaurant a few years back. But over teh years it has totally degraded - even after the new reno. I think the reno made it even tackier. The food wasn't as good as before and it's too expensive for what the food is worth.
Dim sum - average, too expensive for what you get, nothing special about the food
Dinner - huge disapointment! For chinese new years last year (2006) I took my grandma there and they rushed us, only giving us a little more than an hr to eat then billed us before we finished our main courses!!! We didn't even get desseert yet! We ordered fresh geoduck and that was a huge disapointment. It was cooked really poorly, totally not freash tasting, has taht stinky seafood smell and taste. Teh abalone was chewy and the shark fin didn't taste that good. the vegetables were greasy. The worst was the service. They pretty much didn't have any service. Becuase this was my fav east side restaurant, i gave it a few more chances on days where they're not as busy, like Monday evening. Yup just as horrible. WE didn't order the expensive stuff this time, jsut the cheaper items for a normal dinner. It was average food for the price we paid! actually now taht I recall it was quite pricey! average of $40/person. WE didn't have any fresh seafood either.
