Another sushi lunch option

I decided to try this place for lunch one day and it was decent enough. The restaurant is located in the corner of a strip mall on East Broadway about a half a block west of Fraser. The service was attentive but it was relatively dead during the prime time lunch hour. I ordered a bento box as I usually do at these kinds of places for lunch. It was inexpensive and everything on it was properly prepared. Not sure if I will ever be back but its certainly not a bad choice.

I took Mrs. C and her father to eat at Tomo. The elder wanted sushi, and would not be denied. We found the restaurant empty except for the people coming and going for the brisk takeout trade. Having our choice of tables, we selected comfy seats and prepared to eat. One of the local Chinese newspapers had a 20% off coupon, which we presented without any complaint.

We had a selection of nigiri and roll sushi, a big sashimi plate, beef teriyaki, and the roasted squid in special sauce. The squid was awesome, cooked to juicy perfection and the tasty sauce made it even more delicious. As for the sashimi, it wasn’t half-frozen like you usually get, the pieces were generous, and it tasted fresh. The sushi was also very good, especially the nigiri, which had various types of seafood. I think the Tai (red snapper a.k.a. mudfish) was the best. The beef teriyaki was a big portion and it was devoured with gusto.

The service was excellent, and our tea cups were always full. The ambience was tidy and comfortable but nothing special, and the w/c was clean.

Overall it was a pleasant experience I will soon repeat.

Sushi!

It's not much to look at on the inside but free tea and miso soup is a nice touch for each meal. Being a vegetarian they have lots of options and will make the food without fish flakes (on the agadashi tofu) and mayo (in the sushi rolls) if you ask. The waitress explained to me that they get lots of vegetarians there so they are used to making those changes.

The staff is always friendly and accommodating and the sushi chef always says hello and goodbye when you enter and exit. They have good hours and are open every day.

It's very decent sushi at a decent price. It's local for me so I frequent it often. Yum!

I went there twice recently and both times I was very dissappointed.

My friend and I had lunch there and ordered some rolls. I was shocked how all inside-out rolls were so messy! I guess the chef is not very experienced or they dont care about the presentation. But it was cheap lunch anyway, so we were ok with it. One thing we were very annoyed was the young sushi chef guy was talking on the phone REALLY loud.

Since someone told me they have another sushi chef for dinner time, we decided to give them another try on Friday night.
It was very busy and we were kind of excited because we thought it was a good sign.

Yes, all sushi we ordered and saw were all beautifully done. The dinner time sushi chef guy knows how to roll sushi and cares about how they look. That was the only good thing there that night.

I will start with how poorly they manage the business.
It was Friday night, and the restaurant was super busy. The place is kind of small, but only one server obviously cannot take care of all the eat-in, take-out, and delivery custmers.
We had to wait for very, very, very long time for our tea, food, and the bill.
Surprisingly, the chef (not the sushi chef. He was making a ll the Teriyaki and other stuff) left to deliver food twice while we were there even though he was the only chef in the kitchen. A group next to our table had to wait soooooo long until the chef came back from delivery and finally started making some food. I also saw a few groups wating and not helped for long. Of course they decided to go other places.

I dont think it is a good way how to cut down the cost and grow the sales. They are just greedy, stingy, not organized people.

Oh, there is one thing I have to mention about the sushi. The sushi rice was too sour and warm! That tells you they do not know how sushi should be made and served. When I traveled in Japan, I had sushi almost every night at many different places and non of the them had such a warm rice sushi. Think about it. Warm rice and raw fish! Ew! I think the owner is from somewhere in south-east Asia who dont know much about Japanese food. Actually there was no Japanese staff working there I guess. I know sushi is popular, but why dont you make something else you are familiar with!

Anyway, avoid this place unless you just need to be full at $10 or less.

Good food, Good price

First of all, they don't have all you can eat. I started going there recently and checked the reviews tonight, then found somebody mentioning it. They used to do all u can eat, but not anymore, I believe.

Anyway, their food is always solid for the price. I don't like Terriyaki so much because I love real Japanese style Terriyaki ( U can try one at Sushi Aoki ).

It takes really long sometimes if you wanna order something to take out during busy hours ( 7pm-8pm ), and some items such as Gyoza, Oyster Motoyaki, BBQ Ika, Beef Tataki, etc. take time always.

Service is basically solid, though sometimes they are too busy with To Go stuff to take care of eat-in customers.
It's always nice on Tuesday as far as I know. The waitress who works on Tues.( Maybe Sat. ,too) seems to know Japanese food very well and she is very friendly.

The owner guy is also super friendly and nice. The Sushi chef ( short, older one ) is very nice to customers but mean to waitresses. It bothers me a lot.

Overall, it's a good choice to enjoy cheap casual meal with your family, friends, loved ones, and by yourself.

Awesome Fast Sushi

Me and my boyfriend have been going here almost every week since we met 2 years ago (our first date was here). The service has gone down hill a little ,after I noticed a few of the staff dissapeared.
But still, very fast, good food. For VERY a reasonable price $12.95 after 9:30 for all you can eat. And I mean FAST you get your food in like 30 seconds.

We love this place and We're moving to Langley and STILL planning on going here at least once a month!

Tomo is my favorite sushi place on a budget. The staff are always friendly, and orders come quick and easy. You can fill yourself for 10 bucks, and the food quality is higher than most places on this budget. I order take out from Tomo almost twice a week and never get sick of it. I've had better, but Tomo has found a really good food/cost ratio. It's better than it should be!

Well Both my husband and i have been eating here from the beginging. The tea is good and always hot/full. The service is above the bar and we are always encouraged to try new things.

We often bring friends and family to TOMO for dinner and find it best when we have a large group. It is always busy with take-out orders and they do have specials on.

The sushi chef has a flair and pays an amazing detail to all of his dishes. One of our new favs. is the Valcano roll, do try the Dragon roll also. The Eel is always tender and full of flavour.

Just went to eat at the Tomokazu last night. This was one of my delightful Japanese food restaurants I have been to. For around 20 bucks I can stuff myself crazy. The Sashimi food presentation is excellent. Nice decor, solid speedy spiffy service. Regardless of other reviews this place is great. Late night is $12.95 of course its gonna be packed. For $13 per head I wouldn't complain about too much. To my understanding they have another restaurant in Richmond named Ninkazu. Can't wait to try that.!!

Rude Japanese Sushi Chef

Submitted Friday, April 20, 2007 - 10:15pm [Dine in]

Visited Tomo with my family recently for dinner. The decor was typical Japanese & clean. Waitress was friendly & helpful. However when the time came to order, their much advertised "Japanese Sushi Chef" came to our table with a bunch of photos & tried to sell us on sushi which wasn't advertised in the menu. I was not comfortable ordering when there's no price listing so I politely declined the "chef's sushi specials". The chef's demeanor changed rapidly & for no reason he muttered " You must be Chinese!" For the record I'm actually Canadian born with Scottish & Korean parentage. The insulting remarks by the sushi chef needless to say ruined our evening out.
