Average Vancouver Dinner
By c.rivz of Vancouver (east) (1 Review)
Submitted Sunday, April 8, 2012 - 11:04pm [Dine in]

Today, Easter Sunday my Girlfriend and I decided to eat at this restaurant. First what I can say is that the food is average. I Had burger with mushrooms and this melted melted CHEDAR CHEESE W/ crispy BACON. Which i thought was really delicous.. Also in addition to that i had 1LB baby back ribs, I thought why would have cooked it a little more, it didnt have that BARK that i was looking for. Thier fries are skin on fries, which i thought really help the texture with the ribs, however it was not too crispy as it shoulve been. My girlfriend had NY Steak ( Medium Rare), she stated that the meat was too bland & it chewy for a medium rare, She had mashed potatoes & Vegetable. I Tasted her mashed potatoes and i think they did not mix it well enough it was (CHUNKY). Based on what we ate today, we really thought its avarage dinner for a quick bite. And the only thing i really would recomend is the 1LB BABY BACK RIBS + FRIES & VEGETABLES. We paid $ 41.95 + tips = $47---.

This is a great place if you want tasty food, for a great price. I enjoyed the $9.95 steak dinner, and was pleasantly surprised by a perfectly cooked medium rare steak with very nice flavor. The baked potatoe had all the trimmings and the vegetables were well cooked and nicely seasoned. All in all a very very nice meal. The waiter was attentive and friendly as well. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great meal for a great value!

This is a solid family restaurant. Food is tasty (BBQ baby back ribs and steak today) and service is prompt and friendly. Atmosphere is casual and comfortable. Nothing too fancy here, just a delicious and very satisfying meal at a very reasonable price. It probably won't be too long before I come back again. Recommended.

The downhill slide is gathering speed....

I used to drop in on my way home from work every month or so but I no longer will go back. At first it was a little overpriced, but the service was great and the meals were hot and tasty with swift service. Then it started to get pricier, service still attentive, but the food started tasting reheated or like the management was trying to save money and not throw anything out. Then it was just a smidge better than a frozen Safeway t.v. dinner. Waaaay overpriced. I see the windows always have "specials" posted on them to lure in the innocent...but not this lamb. No-sir-ee.

Tasty Burger!

I went to to TJ's to watch the Canucks get beat up and to have a big feed. The double deluxe burger had 2/3 of a pound of beef (2 char broiled patties, made from actual hamburger, not frozen beef byproducts), bacon, cheese, mushrooms tomato and lettuce. It was extremely filling and savoury, and juicy in the extreme. The fries were also tasty and freshly prepared.

My wife is a bit more conservative, so she went with the TJ burger (1/3 pound beef, cheddar, onions, tomato and lettuce, with extra mushrooms) and salad. The burger was great, and the salad was really fresh.

Sadly, the prices at TJ's have gone up since the new owners bought the place, but the service is really good, and the beer specials are a welcome addition. They actually congratulated me for using the Entertainment Book coupon.

My only regret (other than the increased prices) is that the famous steak and spaghetti is no longer on the menu. Also the waitresses who worked here since the beginning of time have all been retired. They will be missed.

Not bad

Been here 2x now stopped in for a plate of nachos and a beer the first night. For $10 you get a large platter of nachos lots of cheese and a good size side of sour cream and salsa way more then i needed. It was slightly over cooked in the oven so a couple of chips were slightly burnt but once past that, the rest was pretty good. I was greeted and seated by the friendly staff. I asked the server is they would put on the hockey game and they did so without any fuss. A bottle of Canadian was $5 a good deal.

Second visit had the burger and fries. lots of fries came with the order they were home style with the skin on and no salt the way i like them and there is nothing worse than getting too much salt on your fries. The burger was big at least a 6oz patty lots of toppings and bacon. It was hard to get into my mouth. Better than most fast food places but not quite as good as other sit down restaurants. The patty was not flavored in any way but still had some juice and not over cooked.

But for $10 still ok and you will be full. The decor is dated but it’s a neighborhood restaurant and it’s been around for a long time so granted it’s a bit rough around the edges but the chairs are still comfortable and the tables were clean. It was cleaner than some fast food places around town that have 4x’s the staff running around.

They appear to be training new staff so for the reviews who had problems before may want to retry it again in a month or two when they get the kinks ironed out.

When leaving both times the staff gave me a big smile and thank you on the way out, which was a nice touch? So if they are training new staff maybe they will upgrade the food a bit more and the decor some. It’s pretty close to my house so I will check it out again and watch the game on the big screen with a cheap beer

Are we talking about the same restaurant

I have been going to Tom & Jerry's for several years. Usually for business lunches. Went again for lunch yesterday. They have done some redecorating and the menu is priced so that nothing costs more than $10. I have never had a problem there. Our waitress was great and has a good sense of humour. My wife and I both ordered from the breakfast menu and we don't have any complaints about it. If fact, there was so much on my plate that I ended up taking some of it home. It is not a chain restaurant but a family owned business. After reading some of the reviews here, I can't believe a lot of what has been said. It is quick and more than adequate. I will vote with my wallet and continue going there. Granted it is not a Michelin rated place but a solid restaurant not pretending to be something that it isn't. By the way, it was very busy when we were there and judging by the interaction between staff and customers, there are a lot of repeat diners going there.

Worst Dining Experience Had in a Developed Country
By monkeypie of Vancouver (14 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, June 13, 2010 - 9:27pm [Dine in]

Normally, I wouldn't post a review on this type of restaurant as it is an inexpensive chain diner and what do you expect? fine dining? obviously not, so why complain. However, I am posting this review as I experienced things I have only seen in an underdeveloped country where I was paying about 75 cents for a meal.

First off, the service was awful. We waited 20 minutes before anyone even looked our way. Should have left but hungry and not wanting to look else where. Finally a waitress came over and took our order but had this distracted and inattentive sense about her, that I just know she would get something wrong. Well, SOMETHING is an understatement.

She brought my coke after 15 minutes but forgot his beer altogether. She was politely reminded and went and got it and did not bring a glass with the bottle. She then forgot about our appetizer and brought our entrees. I ordered a chicken sandwich with salad. The salad was bagged salad mix that was totally inedible. It was black and slimy in spots, and wilted. This was covered by a large slice of cucumber that was dry and shriveled on one side as it was the end that should have been cut off and thrown out. There was no salad dressing with it and had to ask. His fries were soggy and the bottle of vinegar on the table had cloudy, murkey floaties in it. We also had an entertainment coupon which we were told was no longer accepted.

As we didn't eat much of our entrees, we asked about our appy that never came. She seemed unphased that she forgot and said "ok" and put the order in. 10 minutes later she brought out the worst calamari I have ever had. I mean, really sick. Batter was not really sticking to the squid and there were bits all over the plate and naked squid rings. It was covered in wilted peppers.

Finally, we asked for our bill and when it came we discovered we were overcharged by $15 (charged for a pitcher of beer instead of a bottle of beer). We overheard two other couples complaining about the food and mistakes as well.

When I got home later on I got stomach pains and felt awful. I will spare you the details.

Altogether, it was the worst experience I have had in a long time, if ever. I have had better service and food on the side of the road in rural Cambodia then at this place.

Overpriced Mediocre Diner

I wasn't expecting much from a typical family diner like this, but the food was worse than expected..overly processed and greasy and quite expensive compared to..pretty much everywhere else which fits into this category. Don't do it unless you're desperate! I'd even recommend you go into one of those dirty looking places down the street..better food for 3$ compared to 9$ for breakfast. Boo.

Had dinner there tonight and the place was almost deserted. Big prices no value. Food was okay but nothing to warrant the prices charged. Double burger and penne primaver plus 2 iced tea $32.00. Restaurant is a blast from the past. Looks like nothing has changed in 30 years. As I sat at the window looking out at the Burger King my thoughts were that we could both be having a flame broiled whopper meal and still have $20.00 in my pocket.

Downhill from what it used to be
By WBuckWalter of East Van (6 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, November 7, 2010 - 6:07pm [Dine in]

As my wife says, there's a reason why some places that serve breakfast on a Sunday morning have a lineup and others don't.

We were late in the game in getting to The Roundel on East Hastings (glowing review coming soon) for breakfast this Sunday morning so naturally, there was the usual lineup to get in. We weren't in the mood to wait in a long line and we were hungry. As we were heading out of Vancouver and east into an afternoon hike, we decided to venture further east along East Hastings and try one of my old favorites from when I lived in the neighbourhood seven years before. Sure enough, there was no lineup at Tom & Jerry's. There always used to be. That and the gaudy signage now plastering the windows advertising a new menu where "everything is under $10" should have been the first clue to try elsewhere. We entered and were promtly seated by a very friendly waitress.

There were a few people peppered throughout the place, and I could instantly see that whomever is running the joint has let it go. It looks like some of the booths have been ripped out and duct tape has been left to cover the scars on the floor, and it didn't appear to be super clean. Again, the word gaudy comes to mind to describe the ambience and the lack of upkeep. There was a horrible satellite music station blaring on the 62" flatscreens titled "Adult Alternative." And yes, it was as awful and embarrassing-goosebump-inducing as you would imagine "Adult Alternative" music to be.

Our waitress was friendly and prompt and we ordered coffee and and an orange juice to start while we perused the menu. Across the room, I witnessed a mouth-breather chachi-type that didn't know how to hold cutlery except in a fist ask one of the very gracious and friendly waitresses to change the channel on the TVs from the "Adult Alternative" station to an American football game played by two teams from cities that I'm sure he has never visited, let alone could find on a map. As he ignored his girlfriend by moving his chair to watch this slow drag of a sport, he shovelled food generously into his mouth with fork clenched firmly in fist. This killed what little shred of atmosphere existed as my wife and I tried to talk overtop a stupid game that in my opinion, is like watchin paint dry. Give me a real game that requires incredible skill and athleticism like Hockey. I digress.....

I ordered the basic Eggs Benny and M'lady ordered two eggs over easy with hash browns and toast. As she lamented about how disgusting her two sips of coffee were, I assured her that Tom & Jerry's "used to be really clean and kept up nicely and I used to come regularly and it used to be busy and I'm sure the food will still be really good...."

My Benny came smothered in what the menu described as a homemade hollandaise sauce, which was bland and flavourless. A whole lot of salt and tobasco sauce made it a little interesting. Both of our sides of hashbrowns came cold, and again, I had to put salt on them with Tobasco and ketchup to get through them. M'lady also had to smother her food with ketchup and tobasco. She didn't finish the eggs or the hashbrowns, nor did she get past those two sips of her coffee.

7.99 and 5.99 respectively for crappy food is not good value. Give me the Tom & Jerry's of old which may have been priced a little more, but was a good breakfast in a decent looking restaurant. At least the place is still clinging to great customer service, and we tipped our waitress well.

We will never go back, and will make sure to get down the street to The Roundel early on the weekends from now on!

Heard about this place on the radio, went and checked it out. Great breakfast! Poached eggs nicely done, delicious hash browns, lightly buttered whole wheat toast... all for about $5! Plus the waitress was always by to refill my coffee and water... what more could you ask for? Cool, old-style family diner. When the Giants are on, I'll be back for dinner.

Even with the Vancouver Courier promo - kids eat free - DONT risk your health...
By homerboi of westend (10 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, July 8, 2010 - 3:12pm [Dine in]

We saw the promo ad in the local community paper so we decided to go try it out.

It's a good thing we didnt eat anything at this place. When we walked in, there was an argument going on with a small family and the waitress. There was only one occupied table in the place.
While the place looked ok, I decided to ask the patron that stormed out what had happened. She said the food was not fit for consumption and refused to eat and pay for it. She had only received part of her order for her family of four.
I went back in to see what food was left on their table as we were seated nearby.
Yup, only one small bite out of the burger and it looked pretty red inside. She must have spit the rest out as it looked like it was in the napkin on the plate. yuk!!
We immediately decided to leave. By the looks the waitress gave us, she was pretty miffed about our decision. I told her we've changed our mind....and her reply to us........"whatever...."

While we did not eat here - thank god - the last patron's reaction to the questionable food and the waitress' "hospitable attitude" was enough for us to make a quick exit.

Promos for kids eating free are not always a good thing....

I kept hearing about the great deal at this restaurant. And I have visited a couple of times in the last few weeks and yes, the 10 oz. steak was pretty good for 9.95. The first time i got a wonderful steak (yes there was a ton of gristle on the edge, which i had to cut off, i would have happily ordered at 7 or 8 oz steak without gristle, but this is beside the point) with lots of veggies and mashed potatoes. About a week later I ordered the same thing, got way less veggies and potatoes, but the steak was still pretty good, so i was satisfied.
but today, I ordered the 10 oz steak medium rare (which is the only way to enjoy a steak imo) and got a thin, overcooked piece of meat. I told the waitress that it was not cooked the way i ordered and she took it away. I know it takes a little while to get a meal re-cooked so i was not worried. The waitress even told me it would be a minute or two, which i told her i expected.
Very quickly the next version of this meal was delivered. (too quickly, in retrospect) it looked ok. i cut off a piece of the end and spit it out because the texture was so gross. I flipped the steak over and it was raw on the other side, except for a few grill marks. I nearly threw up.
I could not stay after that, i did not feel like eating again for a long time.
What kind of establishment serves this kind of slop to customers?
I don't think i will be back.

We went to Tom & Jerry's for the first time last night. Myself, husband and 13-year-old daughter. We were pleasantly surprised by their "nothing over $10" menu. I ordered the 10oz NY steak and had mashed potatoes. Hubby ordered same with baked potato. My daughter ordered the 2 piece fish & chips.
The steaks were actually nicely grilled and seasoned. The mashed potatoes were real and very buttery tasting (which I loved!) and the gravy was obviously homemade, not a dry mix. The mixed veggies that came with it were rather undercooked, but not horrible. Hubby said his potato wasn’t cooked quite enough, but it was good sized, and the toppings were plentiful.
My daughter’s fish & chips were very good. Hand-cut fries, good sized fish fillets, light and flaky and very fresh tasting (I had to try it).
We were there around 6:30 on a Sunday night, and the place was nearly empty. The wait staff was very attentive and nice.
They represent themselves as a “family diner” and the quality of the food for the price is exactly what it is. It is good for a family on a tight budget, and the food was very good.
We’d go again. I’d like to try the burgers, they looked really good on the other diners' plates at another table.

We used to eat at Ton & Jerry's quite often. Had not been there for a long time, but went back about 6-7 months ago. Had a burger and fries.
The tomato was mushy and the fries were cold. For some reason decided to try it again.Had French Onion soup (my favorite). It was terrible.Told the waitress and she just shrugged.Well, believe it or not we went there again tonight. We were shopping nearby, were hungry and had a time committment.I had the worst breaded veal cutlets,I have ever had. So thin I could almost see thru them, and very dry. Cold mashed potatoes and gravy. I was with a group of friends tonight and when I told them about it, one of the ladies said that it had changed
management and she agreed.....the food was terrible. Will never go there again. I guess it is Knight & Day for us. They make excellemt breaded veal cutlets.

T&J is exactly what it claims to be. A basic family restaurant. There is nothing fancy here, the food and service good. I remember as a young adult hitting here after a concert. Lots of good times. It really hasn't changed much over the years, and that's ok.
I would definitely not come here for a nice dinner out, nor expect anything special or unique. But for a late night bite, or a cheap lunch. It is good, and always has been. It's been predictable. I would say I revist T&J at least 3-4 times a year, and sure I will continue as long as it stays the way it is.

Submitted Thursday, July 2, 2009 - 2:18am [Dine in]

I had lunch there the other day.
The food was all processed, and greasy. My fries were overcooked. My pop was flat, the service was slow, and I think if my server had smiled at me, her face would have cracked and fallen off. The food was over priced and cheaply made. The glow of the neon lights and the glare from the bigscreen tv they sat me in front of gave me a headache, not to mention having to sit through an MMA fight on tv, watching a guy get his face smashed in while I'm trying to eat my lunch. Wow, I don't understand why I went to a restaurant named after a cat and a mouse in the first place. At least I know that when the Cancuks are playing I can get a coffe at the BK across the street and watch the TV at Tom and Jerry's from there. Thumbs down, way dow.
Enough said.

I have been to this restaurant a couple of times over the years and it has been a consistent decent place. I think the previous reviewer was way off or is some sort of "high falutin food snob" who was expecting a gourmet meal? nevertheless, because she is way off in my opinion. I have had the turkey dinner, hambuger steak and other entrees are they have all been fine. The portions are decent. Yes sometimes it gets busy and they may be short staffed so your wait may be longer but the food is decent.

We got ignored for 20 mins before they took our order and the food was even worse. I dont think it can even be called food...it was the WORST meal i have ever eaten. NEVER GOING BACK.
