Maybe it was because I was starving, but this dish was rock solid. My boy from Ireland says they always pour a "nice" glass of Guinness, too. For my first try, I wanted to test their flagship Bangers and Mash.
Please note: I am NOT an expert in banger's and mash, in fact I have never had this dish before. Although I have had my share of mashed potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and sausages.
This dish was stellar. it's a calorie massacre, so if you're keeping count, you'll run out fingers while smelling the dish when they put it in front of you. Heck, it's 5 calories to LOOK at it. Every single one, worth it.
the sausage was tasty and real meat. the mash was flavourful and smooth. The gravy was light and not overly salty and the Yorkshire pudding was light and easy.
I was drinking Makers Mark and it seemed rather potent as well. I'll definitely be back.
This is more bistro then pub with a ho-hum interior and simple deck more suited for a couple of pints than dinner, despite the great view of downtown. They've done a good job though with embracing the right elements to be a success in an awkard location.
The food is generally very good. The courgettes (zucchini), burgers and Guinness pie are all good to excellent, as is the hanger steak at dinner. As for comfort food, I don't know there's a greater joy than ordering the cumberland sausages with onion gravy and mashed potatoes, with all of it sitting on a plate sized Yorkshire pudding. For $15, this is one of the happiest dishes in the city...and you don;t need to eat again (for a day anyway).
The draft beer selection is good, with Fullers, Guinness on tap, and at an E.Van. discount. The place's size no doubt limits selection but it's enough for anyone's taste.
It's a great place to watch soccer, especially for Setanta games. The atmosphere is good. At night, the single TV doesn't dominate the room and the atmosphere is relaxed and easy going with a diverse crowd. Not a place to be seen, it's a place to be with a friend. Service can be eccentric and the small kitchen can lead to delays but it almost never matters.
Generally...well recommended for Brit eats and relaxed atmosphere and watching footy...
Three lions used to have the best zucchini sticks in town and were served long uncut using their special panko breaded tempura batter. Now the sticks are cut into 2 1/2 to 3 inch long fingers with more batter in proportion to the zucchini. Had the pie with mash and the pie crust came burnt - the price paid also didnt justify the miniature sized helping.
On the flip side, they are one of the few in town who have strongbow on tap. The British poutine was also good.
The food here is really good. Atmosphere is very much like a pub, but they do not have a good beer selection,. I would like to see more craft beers especially some good styles like ipa, stout, belgian, etc. But other wise this is a really good place and the prices are ok so I would go back again.
I went to The Three Lions for Sunday Brunch with a few friends today. 4 of us ordered the Traditional English Breakfast (Lincolnshire sausage, Wiltshire bacon, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, poached eggs, hash browns & toast), 3 of us added the Black Pudding, and the lone vegetarian amongst us ordered the Cheese Toasty (Guinness stout, fontina and edam with roasted roma tomatoes on toasted bread and served with "chips"). The whole table ordered pints of "Bruised Pear" (Perry's Pear Cider with a head of Guinness), and there were a couple pints of Tetley's Ale as well.
The food was fantastic! The eggs were poached perfectly, nothing was greasy, the wait staff was friendly, and the presentation was great as well! A wonderful, laid back place to relax, linger over good food, good conversation, a couple pints, and watch a bit of European Football on the telly.
My friends and I are already talking about a return visit to sample the dinner menu. Loved it :)
Visited the Three Lions last night for the first time, and it will definitely not be the last. I asked the server to recommend a nice hoppy beer and his recommendation - an IPA from a brewery in New York - was perfect! We just enjoyed a couple of food items to share and were very impressed by the presentation. The zucchini sticks were long (about the size of the entire zucchini) and were done perfectly, the feta dip was also very good. We also shared the cesear salad whose presentation again was outstanding, dressing was ok. Great atmosphere, very good service the entire night, and definitely a lot of fun.
Since coming across the Three Lions I have made it my weekly place to share a drink and meal with friends. The menu is smaill but incredible. They have taken their time to be creative with their menu, but tasty also.
The beer list has a broad range of new beers for me to try and the wine list may seem small to some but it is full of great wines. The staff and owners are always happy and friendly.
If 'authentic' means slow and poor quality this is the place! We were there for just over an hour -- for eggs. My wife ordered the quiche - it was cooked in england and sent via boat where it was kept warm under lights when the chef here could finally put his touches on it by baking it again for a few hours -- read 'dry, over cooked and flavourless'. I ordered the omelette which was ok - I was expecting incredible as it took over half an hour to make. My parents ordered the eggs benny which they said was great. All 4 dishes came with a limp, rusty, overdressed salad that was un -edible. Undercooked potatoes rounded out the experience.
waitress did her best to cover for what is an incompetent kitchen. Never agin.
Went for Sunday brunch and had the traditional full English breakfast ( minus mushrooms). Boy, was it good! The Lincolnshire sausage was lovely, bacon yum, rest of it very good. Even had HP sauce - fantastic! It wasn't a fry-up - much nicer and lighter, but not poncy. Will be back again when the urge for a proper breakfast hits ( and when someone offers to look after the kids!).
A relatively new restaurant, just off the main SOHO drag. Room is very comfortable, with banquette seating around the room perimeter.
Menu contains a lot of comfort food favorites, nothing too fussy or precious. Bangers and mash, fish and chips, burger, hanger steak, lamb curry and a seafood pasta were some of the main choices. Definitely good value for the prices.
There is also a lunch and appetizer or small plates menu which I didn't visit.
I tried the hanger steak, served with thick home cut fries and a welcome surprise of grilled asparagus. The steak was grilled to perfect medium rare and had the expected intense flavour of a hanger cut.
Dining companion opted for the burger and gave it a big thumbs up. The burger size was very generous, served with fries as well.
Different beers on tap - no printed wine list to date but the server recommended a Shiraz which was excellent and a nice match for the steak.
Service was excellent - although the room was not busy. She definitely knew the menu and had recommendations and put a personal touch to the service.
A nice addition to this growing area - I too wish them well.
I would definitely recommend and will be back.
So we stopped in here for a drink on a hot sunny day after some shopping in the area. The room itself is fine, a standard, clean, room, like any somewhat classy pub. The beer recommendation was actually kinda gross ..... but my friend liked his alot! I'm not sure if the server fully knew the whole beer menu, which isn't a big deal really, I don't expect them to major in serving, minor in carrying plates. But, to be fair, the drink list looked OK, but some of the regular pub standards on tap were over priced by a good dollar or more ...... compared to other places in the area.
The beer, the service, the room wasn't the issue really.... it was the food. ew.
Don't order the fish cakes, unless your into a couple, as in 2, child's palm sized cakes atop a bed of ice berg lettuce with some 1980's barcelona salad dressing composed of white vinegar and mayonnaise... and if that wasn't what it was, it sure tasted like it. It was also $15. I'm not sure who the owners/management of this place are, but I'm sure they aren't papered chefs.... let alone the person who made the menu. Granted, it is just a pub, but some of the other things we tried were about as well prepared as what a grade 9 cooking class could produce. If your in the area, and just want a drink and don't mind paying the extra few bucks compared to the going rate, then sure, it's probably a safe bet, but I wouldn't bother with the food...
This place has been around now for almost a year I think, and they are not letting up. I was there last night, and enjoyed delicious appetizers, fresh tasting tap beer, and listened to the Kinks playing in the background, at just the right level. The food is consistent and outstanding outstanding. If you get a chance to have a slow-cooked meat special, I could not recommend it any more. I also am partial to their lamb burger, and their curry, which has recently seemed to have a little more kick.
The staff is consistently delightful, and they let us kick around until long after the chairs were up and the curtains drawn. It is an unpretentious place with food and decor that one could be quite smug about. Bring your friends, bring a date, or just go by yourself and sit at the bar. I've done all three, and every time I walk out thinking I picked the perfect spot.
The Three Lions Cafe has the potential to be my local. Hooray for locals! After my first visit I am left with a mediocre feeling. Nicely poured dark ale, very enthusiastic if not chatty service and well, a disappointing plate of fish and chips. The fish was soggy and flavourless at best fortunately the chips did manage to save the day with their perfect seasoning and crisp texture. Sadly, chips do not a plate of fish and chips make. I will return and I will return one more time after that as I always try to incorporate the three strikes and you are out rule...Next time when asked 3 times how my food was I will hope that my honest response will not be met with a tale about a picky customer who asked for his half-eaten meal to be taken off the bill...Not ruling out The Three Lions let's just say they are currently on probation.
Went for lunch on Saturday with a friend and only the brunch menu was available. We both had trouble selecting something as it was pretty limited and nothing really appealed. The room is very comfortable and they did a nice job decorating it. My friend had the cheese omelette. It came with some hashbrowns which she said were meh.. An accompanying side salad was inedible. The salad was bagged greens all wilted and soggy with nothing interesting added to the mix. I had the pulled bison burger; it was just OK; kinda like a burger but instead of the usual patty it was a dollop of stew/pulled bison meat. The fries however were outstanding. Will go back but not for brunch. The English breakfast is $12.50 and the only other burger option, a lamb burger is $15.00; a bit pricey for brunch.
We went to Three Lions Cafe for a late lunch/early dinner after a day of shopping. There weren't many people inside and we were free to choose our seat. Our server very politely and diplomatically asked that, since we were seated at a table for four with only two of us, if the need arose would we be willing to switch seats, especially as we were right in line with the tv and the hockey game was on. We said "no problem" On to ordering, since we were there for neither lunch menu or dinner, we ordered from the finger foods menu. I got the fish fingers and chips and my friend got the potato/onion bhaji. Both were tasty and the portion was immense. Our drink orders and food orders were taken quickly by a friendly server with a welcoming smile and food delivered hot and in pretty record time! On my first visit, and there will be more, I give this establishment an outstanding rating for service, food choice, price and ambience. I immediately looked at the banquette seating and thought of summer visits with many friends, relaxing with good food and drink.
After watching and waiting to see what would be the results of renovations, we finally made it into the quaint cafe. It appears to be a cozy little place, with a limited "fresh sheet" breakfast menu.
Special of the day was a "veggie" omelette, which two in our party had, and was described as having portobello mushrooms, courgette (zucchini), and red pepper. Some "cheese" was detected, but apparently quite subtle.
Another had the ham hock quiche, and a side of toast. The quiche was good, but the toast was not served with any spread (jam) and was not consumed.
The English breakfast with sausage, eggs, beans, tomatoes, was rapidly devoured.
The fifth in the party had the Eggs Benedict, which were served on "johnnycakes". The eggs were poached perfectly (which seems to be a rarity in Vancouver) and the hollandaise was nicely flavoured and proportioned to accompany the eggs, not drown them.
All the dishes were served with roasted potatoes and a bowl of "leafy green" salad. The potatoes were a touch cold, but the texture indicated freshness, and were nicely seasoned. The salad was lacking any crispness, and seemed to be salty, even though the dressing was light and lemony.
Those who had coffee were pleased with the full bodied flavour.
The table service was adequate, with the waitress being competent and friendly. The wait time for the ordered food was too long, running over half an hour, with a pretty empty dining room at half past ten on a Sunday morning.
Some nice details:
Cutlery, plates, and glasses are high quality and sparkling clean.
The kitchen that can be seen if you are sitting in the right place appears to be clean and well organized.
There is a bar with draught beer, and a Guiness tap.
The table and chairs are a rough hewn wood, which lend a sense of "ye olde English public house" to the place.
I wish it success, and will go back.
