Thomas Haas Patisserie offers a wide variety of desserts, handmade chocolates and confections as well as a selection of sandwiches and breakfast pastries.
I used to come here on many separate occasions, and let me tell you, the service has not improved. The macarons used to be pretty good, now they are very stingy on the fillings and the sizes are inconsistent. The croissants here are really dry and stale, as the previous reviewer had mentioned. Last time the server girl forgot to write down my coffee was for takeout and instead of making the coffee again, Thomas just poured the cup of premade coffee into a reusable cup, rendering only half filled. I was not impressed since I paid $4 for that latte. The ordering system is so stupid, you order with the server girl, you pay, then you stand off to the side for awhile, until the server girl calls you up. Then you have to push and shove your way through to pick out the macaron flavors that you want. The server girls NEVER pay attention to detail. I asked the manager to put the 6 croissants in a box because I was purchasing them for my friend. Instead of doing that, she made a stupid excuse like, "there's no box for it". And I am like, "can't you use a cake box?" And the manager just ignored me, and ended up bagging the croissants individually. Also, the server girls like to gossip about other customers. For instance, I was in line for a cake one day, and a customer was yelling at one of the servers because I guess she didn't like the service that she had received. Instead of talking to the customer who was visibly upset, the manager babbles away with other customers in the line up explaining to them why that customer was upset and how it wasn't her ( the manager's) fault. I guess this establishment is way too busy to care if their server girls are treating the customers with respect. I have been to Thierry's, Faubourg, Ganache and other coffee/ pastry shops , and I have never experienced such hostile behavior from the staff at any of the above mentioned establishments before. And to the previous reviewer, the service that you found at Thomas haas is pretty consistent- hostile, immature servers that lack any form of common sense.
Given the reviews on this site and others I expected something great from here. This was my first time in so I was a newbie as to how the ordering system worked. There are no directions or obvious processes noted so it was a guessing game. I was in a bit of a hurry but had a rare craving for something flaky, buttery with a moderate touch of chocolate. Some one ahead of me was taking quite a bit of time to choose but while waiting I spied a pain au chocolate (maybe the last one?) and decided I would order that. After the person ahead finished and moved down to the other end of the counter I stood waiting for quite awhile for the person helping to return and was just thinking I might have to go without (time pressure) when she returned. She was across the counter from me but ignored me so I asked if I could order now-said what I wanted, she nodded picked it out of the case and disappeared. It took a wild guess that I was to go to the other end of the counter to pay, where I stood waiting for the person there to finish paying (at the point there were three other staff hovering around that end of the counter but not the one who I ordered from). Finally, one person said my name and told me the price to pay, I paid and she handed over my pastry. I ate itmas I walked to my next appointment-and here are my thoughts-needed to be heated-it was a little stale. The amount of chocolate was just right for my tastes which was nice. But overall, I found the whole brief experience less than welcoming and the quality of the pastry did not meet the same product quality as the pain au chocolate from La Baquette. However, as I believe that every place has its off days I may give it one more try; and this time I will know how the ordering/pick up works from having successfully guessed it this time. (BTW, a few little words as to how things work to a customer is welcoming so maybe instead of a nod and a disappearing act-could you just say something in future?)
I had lunch with my wife in the area today and we decided to stop by here for our first time. I've been to their other location so I know to expect a great experience. This place is more spacious then their north van spot so we chose to order 2 desserts and 2 cappuccinos and sat inside.
The cappuccino was great as always and the dessert I had was the crispy chocolate raspberry and it was fantastic. If you want to have a great coffee and dessert this is definitely the place.
My only complaint is that it's crowded.. but when you make everything perfect your business should be crowded :)
Yes we will be back whenever we are in the area.
For my birthday, I was presented with a chocolate hazelnut cake from the new Thomas Haas location. Two words: soooo good. The cake was really decadent, and you can tell that "real" ingredients are used. The layer of hazelnut included crushed chunks of the nut and balanced with the rich, velvety chocolate layer perfectly. The cake was very fresh, even though we just bought it from the display case.
I know many have complained that Thomas Haas is over priced, but compared to what? Sure, it's more costly than say, Cupcakes, but those guys bake from a box. (No offense, I still love Cupcakes... but just saying...) It's more than triple the cost of any grocery store's bakery, but it's also three times as good. Same comparisons can be made with chocolate. Compared to Mink, Bernard Caulbault, Pattiserie or other "better" chocolatiers / bakeries, I'd say the prices are on par. Real ingredients cost more and that's the bottom line. You get what you pay for.
I've been anxiously awaiting for the new location on West Broadway to open and finally they have. I never found the time to stop by and even on my first visit there recently, I was rushed to leave.
Its prime location is nestled in between some of the best restaurants in the city, and once inside you get a subtle dose of elegance without being over the top. Nevertheless, these subtleties echo boutique shop.
I was in a hurry, so even with the lineup which gave me some time to decide, I quickly decided to just grab the double baked almond croissant. Unfortunately in my haste, I completely neglected to ask for a re-toast, and I don't remember the counter person asking either. Nevertheless, it was still delciously guilty when the first bite penetrated the flakey exterior with the equally fantastic filling waiting to melt in your mouth.
Service was not quite as brisk as the other location, despite what appears to be the same system implemented here. It took a little while before I was acknowledged and it was definitely one step slower here but seems many of the patrons here embrace the dilatory pace.
For a dose of heavenly desserts and pastries TH is now closer to home, but I think I'd prefer to hop over the bridge instead.
Wow. Amazing macarons, and not too expensive. Very, very good almond croissants, but they were about $5 a piece. A little pricey for a croissant, but worth a try. I would definitely come here again to enjoy a coffee.
It gets a little squishy inside the cafe when it's busy but they do have a cute little patio.
Five of us went on Monday to meet for our bi-monthly coffee, only to find it closed. I had picked it out from all the food website reviews. Two of us had been there before and said it was great!. Luckily we had a backup plan.
Anyway, I was "in the area" and stopped in today (Wedensday). I got the "pain au chocolat" and an Americano. They were awesome! I got a sandwich to go..."Moroccan Chicken Panini" which my son and I just shared... also awesome!
Hopefully the next time our group gets together it's not a Monday as I'd love to take my friends!
Heard from lots about how good this place is, and it actually lived up to hype. The long-shot Americano I got was smooth - something my non-coffee drinking wife couldn't stop tasting. Pastries were all fresh and really good, with excellent and complicated flavours for something so seemingly simple. Perhaps a little bit expensive for what it is, but it's pretty much up there with some of the other best I've had, foreign countries included.
The pastries, chocolates and other desserts at Thomas Haas are wonderful. Like the reader below, I have also visited many pastries and chocolate shops around the world; however, I find that Thomas Haas lives up to the standards of any highly acclaimed dessert place. The chocolate hazelnut mouse cake is incredible and the almond pistachio croissant melts in your mouth. The only issue is that the store is simply too small to accommodate a large amount of people swarming towards its goodies, hence the line. A great place to have an afternoon or morning snack and a welcome addition to Kitsilano.
Their chocolate is good. But too expensive. I love black chocolate but this is nothing different except the outstanding packages. I tried their hot chocolate. Not that good either. Taste more like hot chocolate milk than hot chocolate. So it's just good to buy a gift for your mom because of the fancy box and because of the name.
This place is only popular b/c they're on the North Shore and there's not that much competition. Folks on the North Shore seem to need help refining their palates. Don't get me wrong, the food is decent here but it's nothing to call home about. I've dined all over the world and this place is decent.
I agree with the previous poster that the servers are only friendly when the owner is there. If Thomas isn't around, the staff all of a sudden develop an attitude. I asked for a glass of water THREE times before someone actually poured me a glass. And don't expect smiles from the lady making the coffee. I believe she may be Thomas's wife?
Whoever designed the store front needs to be shot. You have three lines going within half a foot of space. The line up to order, pay and fetch your coffee is ridiculous.
I find when the owner is not around, the staff aren't very friendly and don't work very hard, they only work
hard when the owner is there.
Also, find them way overpriced! We all work very hard for a living and they are making a killing off us poor working people. There stuff is good but not good enough to pay an arm and a leg for.
