Thida Thai restaurant is an authentic Thai cuisine restaurant in Vancouver on Davie at Bute.
I wanted something light after eating some unsettling fast food in the morning as a pinch during work. Naturally, Thai came to mind even though their rich flavours are synonymous with their cuisine. Restaurant was not busy and not particularly fancy - a bit on the scruff side actually.
Our table of three settled with four dishes and coconut rice. The notables were the pad thai and the green curry. Subtle yet strong enough flavours compliment and bring out the essence of both dishes without the overpowering grandeur of a sloppily rushed dish. The noodles for the pad thai was perfect, with good bite and without the glop of jumbled noodles during the toss. It was arguably the best green curry and pad thai we've had in town. Our clear soup and sauteed seafood and vegetables were completely left in the dark - good in their own right but a toss over sideshow. Their Thai ice tea mellowed out the simmering heat from the food. Other than the pad thai, the portions are smallish and those with a quantity over quality attitude will be dismayed.
We had a younger server table us, quick with table clearing and a timely water top up but a bit dreary and quiet. The owner was the more outspoken of the two and noticed she offered suggestions for neighbouring tables.
Among the expensive, pompous downtown area and its restaurants, their food truly does all the talking.
Usually great and authentic food at good prices in a high-rent area is a rare combination for me, so I was a little bit skeptical about reading such rave reviews on the food.
Well we tried it, and I can attest that all that's been said is true. We really can't stop talking about how good the food is here. I can honestly say that Thida Thai is the best Thai food I've had in Vancouver. All the flavors tastes so authentic - no short cuts here.
A lot of Thai restaurants I've tried, seems to use short cut or premade sauces to prepare their dishes, but here, you taste what you should be tasting - fresh, sweet, salty, spicy all at once.
I ordered my usual dish - Pad See Iw. Although they used wide rice noodle (not pad thai noodle), it didn't take away from the taste. My boyfriend also ordered his usual - pineapple fried rice. We tried each other's and agreed that both were the best we've tasted. We also ordered the chicken fried wontons - dipping sauce was fantastic.
Service was great - both we encountered were very gracious and polite - service was neither lacking nor too much. Value was very good with most dishes at about $10. Their dinner special posted outside was any curry (yellow, green, red or matsaman) with rice, salad and springroll for I think $10.95.
I would definitely recommend Thida Thai and can't wait to go back myself.
I decided to check out this place, once to eat in and a few days later take out. What I notice was how friendly the service was and offered suggestions with my meal.
I had the lunch special, spinach with peanut sauce with Chicken and Thai Spring Rolls and both where delicious and filling. I like it so much, I went back for take out a few days later.
They have great lunch specials and it wasn't that expensive, and will be back again, to try something else on their menu.
Good Pad Thai. Nice room, clean and felt like a Thai restaurant. Checked them out for lunch and portions were good, came with a piping hot spring roll, salad with Thai dressing and Pad Thai was authentic, I should have asked for Thai spicy cuz that's how I used to eat it in Bangkok but it was not the usual ketchup taste in other thai joints, Thida Thai did it well in their sauce. Can't comment on other dishes yet but will soon as I am dragging my colleagues there soon. Service was good, friendly and accommodating. Hope to check them out for a feast soon but my first impression was a good one as there are few authentic Thai places like this around.
Tried this place after work one night. The place is simple and clean as far as decor. They should get better ventilation but it wasn't too bad so we stayed.
Ordered a few dishes and everything was great. Perfect spice and the flavors were really balanced. Really enjoyed the Pad Thai and the Tom Yum Khai soup with prawns. We will definitely be back. Reasonable pricing and nice servers. Check it out...
I have been going here for a couple years now and have never been disappointed. The food is very tasty. I always have the Thai Yellow Curry spicy, it is truly delicious. They also make a very good Pad Thai. Start off your meal with an order of the "crispy wonton's" forget the actual Thai name but they are a great start to your Thai meal.
The service is excellent always prompt and friendly.
If you are watching your wallet you won't go wrong here. This is not a fancy place just a little Mom and Pop restaurant however for great Thai food at a reasonable price head to Thida Thai
I had wanted to check out this restaurant after reading some good reviews below, and I wasn't disappointed. I had some fish and rice noodle and chicken. They were all tasty, but not so for the chicken. My rice noodle wasn't a pad thai since I wanted to try something else, but it was very good. It tasted different but made you feel like eating more and more. The curry and spices for the fish blended very well too. The batter was not too thick and the fish was fresh. I came here for dinner and the price seemed a bit higher than the ones on their website. Maybe the lunch would be a better value. However, the overall was good. I have no complaint on the service or the ambiance.
Went with a few friends on a weekday night to this restaurant. It was empty before we got there around 6 pm, but a few customers came afterwards. The food was decent and the portions were decent but not large. Pad thai and mee goreng were about $10 each. The curry dish was about $13. The skewers were expensive: pretty much $2 for each piece. It's a family run restaurant and does not have much decor. I recommend this place for a casual dinner.
We have been patronizing Thida Thai for 4 years now, and it continues to impress. The atmosphere is great, the food superb and the value is incredible.
Every dish we and our dining companions have ordered have met or surpassed expectations. The fried rice is consistently excellent. Lunch specials include a wonderful spring roll and a crisp salad - great value for the $$.
Check this place out. You will not be sorry you did . . . .
Great tasting food, great service. Definately one of the best thai places in Van. We were impressed with the presentation and the ambiance and the menu is quite attractive.. Loved the coconut soup by the way :) All in all, we'll be back!
We went to this Thai restaurant for lunch mainly because of its decent ratings in Dinehere.ca. The weather was excellent with a lot of sun shining through the windows from outside. With the Chinese New Year and Valentine Day falling on the same day, and with so many Olympic visitors in the nearby downtown area, one would expect that it should be pretty busy for restaurants in the area too. To my surprise, when we entered the restaurant, only one table had guests. The restaurant has a regular menu as well as over ten different lunch specials. I ordered a lunch special dish of pork “Pad Kee Mao”, a kind of wide, flat rice noodles with eggs and chilli. The noodles were actually not as spicy as advertised and it was not too greasy either, as compared to some rice noodles dishes in other Thai restaurants. It also came with spring roll and salad. Although I would have liked the pork to be less dry, still the dish was acceptable and pretty tasty too. Considering its inexpensive price, it is probably good for a quick bite of Thai food.
I tried this place this evening for dinner. I will say that it smells a bit, which is the reason for the low ambiance rating.
The food on the other hand is fantastic. I had massaman curry and my girlfriend had pad thai. I tried her pad thai and it was the best I've had in Vancouver. The massaman curry tasted exactly like it did in Thailand.
I would go back for sure, likely will be takeout next time though.
This is by far the best thai in BC. The food is fantastic. The decor is simple but good taste, service, well, nothing to talking about, not good, not bad, but the food...ah the food. Pad thai the way to have to be, the curry prawns gorgeous, chicken and whatever you order will be fantastic. Small place, small crew, big flavours. Congrats.
Again, this is my favorite place in Vancouver for Thai food. It is run by a family and they serve authentic Thai food. I have been to Thailand and this restaurant is best representation of real Thai food. Amazing pad Thai's, brilliant curries and well prepared seafood. They are always very nice. They also have a good and cheap lunch menu. You should really check out this place.
I love my Thai food, and have tried many restaurants in this city, and others, and this has not only the best value for the quality, but also the most tasty, yummy thai EVER. The service is great, they are friendly and everything they need to be. The place is smaller, but really cute and non-pretentious, which is great. But the food... omigod. It's really just awesome. The pad thai w/tofu add prawns is the best i've ever had, and the beef panang is my new favorite. The portions are immense and the price is really reasonable.
I am assuming this place is a little underrated because of the size and the basic decor. But who really cares. It's the best, just and try it!
I have been going here for about 5 years, and having lived in Thailand for the 2 years prior, this place is awesome. I love the food and the servers are always so nice. Remember, you do get what you pay for - so while the Food is ok, for the money its fantastic. I really like it and I'll continue to go here
