Breakfast specials and char-broiled burgers.
Didn't know a place like this still exists in the high rent area of the west end but tried it on a weekend and got exactly what I expected. They have 5 specials that are under $5. Seem like a good deal. Ordered an item on the regular menu that consisted of hash browns with some various meats and veggies. Was just ok with too little meat and veggies. The hash browns were not browned enough. Eggs were done as ordered. I guess for $7, I got what I paid for. Service was quick and coffe refilled. Ambiance is poor as I sat on a plastic lawn chair. For a quick fill up, would return.
I was hesitant to try this restaurant because of prior reviews being a bit unflattering, but decided to see how it was. I was very happy with my experience. The waitress was extremely friendly and the veggie hash meal I had was huge and tasted great. I also ordered take out for a friend, eggs, sausages, potatoes and toast, and he liked it. I'm visiting from Toronto and had breakfast 3 times so far and this was my favourite. Not only that but it was the least expensive. I will definitely go back on my next trip to Vancouver.
We were told it was the best breakfast joint in the West End by someone at a party. He must have been really wasted. Service started off quickly, we got coffee but made the mistake of requesting water. The waitress gave us a look that could only be described as pure hatred. From then on we were totally ignored when all the other patrons got coffee refills. We were finally offered a refill when it was obvious we were leaving. The food was truly terrible. Cream cheese sauce instead of hollandaise? The taste wasn't bad but one teaspoon of sauce on barely one full scrambled egg just doesn't cut it. The bacon was overcooked and hashbrowns were a cheap variety and undercooked. The scrambled bacon 'bagle' was undertoasted with overcooked bacon and no cream cheese to be found even though it was supposed to be on there. This was the worst service, attitude and food we have had in a long time although I noticed the over 79 crowd, pretty much everyone else in the place, had coffee refills abounding and were greeted upon arrival and leaving with loud welcomes and thank yous! Obviously only the very old who can't see or taste what is placed in front of them are the only ones who are repeat customers in this dive. Give this one miss unless you are very elderly (and no disrespect to the elderly), and on a very slim budget. You are the only ones who will be welcome here.
We go to Teresa's almost weekly for breakfast and just get one of their specials. The food tastes good, and you get enough to really fill you up. However, I would suggest you bring your own coffee. We always stop by Starbucks or one of the other coffee shops before we head in, they don't seem to mind - they must know their coffee is terrible.
Also, unlike some of the other reviews which mentioned unfriendly service, we have never experienced that. We've always been greeted with a hello and a thank you.
I stopped in here by myself recently for a late weekend breakfast. I was lured by the cheap specials advertised outside. This really was a case of getting what you pay for.
The food is standard, passable adequate breckfast fare. Hashbrowns were fairly ordinary, and the bread ppeared to be the chepest grocery store stuff. I would not recommend ordering pancakes - mine was just cooked through, and had a slightly strange taste. Coffee was very bitter - fr o how bust the place was they would have to be turning it over - but, it did not taste fresh - and, not so cheap at $1.80.
Service was poor - partly due to staff being busy - but, even in other places equally busy good staff make a moment to acknowledge people waiting to be seated, offer to refill coffee, and just check in on you - none of this happpened here.
Overall, even leaving a tip that certainly wasn't deserved, I was out of here easy under $10 - but, it wasn't a breakfast choice I'd repeat.
Maybe if price really matters, and you went during the week, it would be more suited for you.
This is a much better breakfast joint than Grove Inn next block down. I went for a walk on the seawall sunny Monday afternoon and hadn't eaten yet. Since craving breakfast foods and I was already up to Denman, my options were either Teresa's or Joe's Grill. Teresa's was jam-packed with people whereas Joe's was half-empty. And since I've already tried Joe's 2 other locations, I thought I'd give Teresa's a try.
Since I was all by my lonesome, a seat wasn't hard to come by and I got a table right away. I ordered a corned beef hash and a coffee - too bad I didn't notice the everyday specials until after I ordered :(. Daily specials were around $4.50 each and my hash was only $5.95 - IMO, an excellent deal especially for this part of town.
After enjoying my breakfast with the paper, I noticed that nobody once came by to refill coffees. I paid and left with no "thank-you's". For breakfast that cheap, I couldn't complain, but good hospitality isn't too much to ask...is it?
Regardless, this place is A-OK in my books and would definitely return next time to try out their other breakfast specials.
We originally wanted to go to Joe's Grill, but the line up was much too long for our starved state after the 'grind, so we went down the street and got lured into Teresa's by the cheap menu items. Plus there was no line up.
We stood by the entrance for a good long time, and even though there were 3 servers in close proximity, not one of them acknowledged us. Even a momentary eye contact would've sufficed, but not a thing. Finally one of them pointed to a table (again, no eye contact).
The cheap menu items are the ones posted, the other items are pretty much the going rate for brunch-y type of food. I settled on the Daniel, which was 2 eggs, 2 ham/sausage/bacon choice, hash browns, and toast. The price was reminiscent of the 90's at $4.50. My friend had the Adam, 2 pancakes, poached egg, and a meat choice.
We then waited. And waited. And waited some more. I had finished my second cup of tea when after 30 minutes the food finally arrived. By then we didn't care what was in front of us, we were so hungry we shoveled the food into our mouths. There was only one cook, and the 3 servers were just lounging around talking - you'd think one of them can go and help the poor guy sweating away (hopefully none dripped in the food!!)
The hash browns were the kind you get in the frozen food section, the thinly sliced ones. Toast was some bargain-basement bread I couldn't really enjoy. The eggs were ok, but you can't really mess up scrambled eggs. My friend didn't comment on his food, so I can't really say what his meal was like.
All in all, it was cheap, but you get what you pay for. The slow service and the cheap quality of food won't have me going back there. Joe's Grill is far and away better. I would rather pay a few more dollars and get something good. And that is why there was a line up there and not at Teresa's.
I've been to Teresa's Cafe a couple of times and it wasn't too busy to try it again. If you're looking for a cheap eat, if you want a big portion for breakfast, this is it, but don't expect friendly service.
I usually eat their cheese omlettes or scramble eggs with hasbrown & toast, and each time I walk away full. The coffee each time i've been there, I find bitter in taste, but then you're coming to a cheap place what do you expect.
Speaking of cheap, the service is quick, lacking in personality & friendliness. I would suggest pointing on the menu to what you would like, since on gal is weak in understanding english.
If in the area, don't want to spend alot of money, its not too busy, try it.
Mrs. C and I were on the prowl and we saw Teresa’s. There used to be one on Davie, then on West 4th. This one has different owners, but it still has inexpensive and fast breakfasts. We went in based on the strength of our experiences at former incarnations of this restaurant.
The service was quick, and the place looked clean. We didn’t have to wait which was lucky. I had the house burger (lettuce, tomato, cheese mushrooms and bacon) with fries and a coffee, and Mrs. C. had French toast with strawberries. The burger was very good for the price, with nice toppings, and the fries were perfect. The FT was also reported to be great, but the strawberries from a tin were disappointing, since we were expecting fresh ones.
The ingredients were basic, but the preparation was quite good. Even the coffee was fine. This restaurant is not fancy and is usually packed, so if you just want to eat and not soak up the ambience, it is the place to go for a cheap and fast meal.
Recommended, except for the gourmets among you.
