As good as it used to be

This used to be one of our favorite restaurants but we have not been for a number of years, when it changed to the Sequia Grill we found that the prices went up substantially and the quality of the food went downhill.

When browsing through the DOV menu I found the menu option at teahouse very appealing and at $28.00 for a 3 course dinner we thought we would give it another try. We went with another couple last Friday evening and had a prime window seat near the fireplace. What a great start to the evening. In addition to the $28.00 menu they offer a $38.00 option and you can substitute sablefish or steak for your entrée. For appetizers 2 of us had the roasted Tomato soup – it was absolutely delicious. Plenty of flavour and it was nice and spicy. It had a nice little kick to it. The other 2 opted for the salad and they pronounced it to be very good with toasted pine nuts. For entrees 2 orders of sablefish, 1 order of lamb shank and 1 order of tuna. The sablefish was absolutely amazing. It was so moist and perfectly prepared. My husband had the lamb shank and he was also very pleased with his selection. I think our friend who ordered the tuna was disappointed as it was a very small portion. Dessert was apple tart for 3 or us (a small serving) and 1 order of raspberry sorbet.

Service was very good. We were 2 ½ hours over dinner and even though it was dine out at no time were we pressured to vacate the table.

The setting of this restaurant is amazing. It’s right in Stanley Park and in the summer you can look out over the harbour as you dine. If you can request a table in the gazebo. It’s a much nicer room.

We’ll definitely return again.

Great DOV lunch
By urbandiner of Vancouver (22 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, January 23, 2012 - 11:07pm [Dine in]

Food: Went for DOV lunch. The three course menu was very good although the salmon duo appetizer and apple galette dessert were seriously small even for a lunch menu. The mains, however, were wonderful. The lamb shanks meaty and tender. Duck confit was one of the best I've had for a while with a wonderfully crispy skin.

Service: was stretched, probably because it was the first day of DOV and they didn't seem prepared for the number of tables. It appeared that there were only 2 main servers with a couple of auxillary staff for the whole restaurant. The order for the next table was brought to us by mistake. Our server "leon"tried very hard despite being shorthanded and we appreciated his efforts.

Ambiance: The setting is beautiful. It is also delightful to be able to hold a conversation without music blasting away. Even though the music is subdued it still provided for a lively ambiance .

Overall: Always enjoy coming here. The food is consistently good and the price point very fair for a restaurant of its class.

Country club ambiance

We met up with some friends for an evening nightcap. The restaurant was dying down so we went with nibblers instead of full on entrees.

The space is elegant and the surrounding views are amazing, whether you are taking to the water views or the foliage. We opted for the patio outside but there doesn't seem to be a poor choice anywhere you sit.

The food was pretty typical of the genre, ordering a bruschetta that was fairly mundane, the fried squid which was thinly battered and perfectly cooked but frightening for in price for regular dim sum attendees and the thin crust pizza which was neither mouth watering for forgettable. The house bread was something though, with a thin, airy and crispy crust. Great spot to sit and spit.

Our waiter was a pro and took to us more casually than expected. Might be a little strong for some but nearing closing he brought the game all the way to the end.

The ideal spot to bring older family members or to just take it easy in quite solitude and let the ambiance pass you by.

Went for Dine Out Vancouver, booked a table about a week prior for Sunday night. They also have a prime rib special on Sundays, so there was plenty to choose from. We arrived late because of traffic, but they still had our table by the window waiting. The restaurant was more than half full when we arrived, and by the time we left it was almost completely full.

Our server was very friendly at first, but as the evening wore on he got busier and less friendly. However, the service was still good, he came back after we received each course to ask how it was. The only thing I didn't like was the bus person hovering to clear off dishes.

On to the food - we had the prime rib special, and the arctic char off the dine out menu. The presentation was nice, and the food was good but not spectacular. We prefer our prime rib with au jus and horseradish, but this one came with some sort of gravy over it and no horseradish. Mashed potatoes were very creamy and buttery. The arctic char was also good, but not the best I've had. The brownie dessert with ice cream was good, tasted homemade. The lime custard was very tart and light - like eating sour air - which I liked because I don't like things too sweet.

The best part of the evening was the view and romantic setting. The food is decent also, so I'd recommend it for a special occasion.

Rude host

My bf and I went there for brunch and though we had a reservation, we waited several minutes to be seated. When we asked if we could get the empty table by the window, our host said they need to save it in case a party of 4 comes in. 2 minutes later, the main host sits 2 people there. We asked him why and he moved in to a few inches of our faces, face red, eyes bulging and told us menacingly that if we wanted a window table we have to wait for one to open up in the next room. He quickly left and when he passed by again, I asked him why he is being rude. He told me that he is very stressed out in the same tone of voice as before. Then he proceeded to tell the people at the other table that we are "adamant" we want that table and asked them to move, which they graciously did. The rest of the staff were very friendly and after I told our server what happened, she gave us a free meal.

A Lovely Evening

What a surprise! I had little or no expectations as to how the evening would be, but I walked away pleasantly surprised and thinking about going back again. My friend and I were seated at a comfy spot right near the fire. We were greeted right away by our server and wine was on the table before we knew it. I did think the wine list could be a little more extensive for by-the-glass choices. It would be nice to see more local, BC wines featured.

For starters we shared the Pear & Frisée Salad, which they kindly separately plated for us. It was tasty. The Stuffed Mushrooms with Dungeness crab & mascarpone were fantastic. We almost licked the plate! We each had the Seafood Risotto with prawns, scallops, fresh fish and chervil. It was amazing. My friend thought this was the best risotto she had ever had, even after eating it in Italy.

The evening was finished off with the Chocolate Heaven Bar-dark chocolate ganache and house made marshmallow. It was so heavenly!

We sat there chatting and enjoying ourselves so much that when we looked at our watches it was almost 11pm! A very nice experience was had and I look forward to going back again.

Our wedding reception was at the Sequoia Grill (now back to Teahouse) in September 2007 and have traditionally returned there for our anniversary every year since. It appears that this restaurant now focusses on large groups and tourists.

FOOD - I have never not eaten my meal until now. It was horrible. It was an example of something I would have made at home but sucked it back because I didn't want to waste. it. My meal was a fish (sea bass I believe) that was cooked nicely but had no seasoning and was sitting in a clear liquid and peas. It was terribly bland. My husband ordered the lamb after confirming that type of lamb it was and how it was served. When it came it was not what he was expecting and it was overcooked.

SERVICE - My husband made a reservation asking to be inside in the Conservatory room. When we got there they asked if we wanted to sit in or outside on the patio. It seems that they didn't get the message. We were then seated at one of the worst tables in the room and when asked we were moved. Our server was not knowledgeable about the menu. When asked her response was 'I like everything, what kind of food would you like.' When we told her she simply pointed to that part of the menu. It took a very long time for a food to come - close to 60 minutes. It was difficult to choose a wine and had no help from our server. We ended up tracking down more knowledgeable servers to help us out. We ended up having about four people serving our table at different times so you could say it was a team effort. The problem was that the 'team' was not communicating with each other. Among other things we were asked by three people about desert. It was a gong show.

VALUE - Not good. A complete waste of money. Our taxi ride each way was $30. Our meal was over $100. For a $200 night I expected much more.

AMBIANCE - It is a beautiful spot. The problem the Teahouse has however is that their decor is low budget. There was white paper on the tables. I see that at 'touristy' restaurants when they are having quick turnovers. This combined with our overall experience tells me that their target market are tourists who are passing through and not to the local Vancouver market who has a choice of returning.

I contacted the restaurant within a week of our experience simply to provide feedback. I was not looking for a refund but the manager I spoke with offered to send us gift cards in the mail so we could try it again. It's now a month later and we haven't seen the gift cards. So, I'd say overall it's not worth it and I'm sorry that I have to start a new tradition for our anniversary dinner.

We attended as group of five for brunch today. I was most impressed with the great attitude of all the staff. They were to a person, kind, attentive and witty without being obtrusive. Service was quick and there were no mistakes over which diner ordered which dish. Food, menu, and location are but a part of a good experience and they have it all. My wife and I have dined here several times over the years and it was great fun to invite our now adult son and another couple. Unintended as it was we even had entertainment from the old "dame" in the corner clucking over our appearance. The two couples in our group rolled in on motorcycles and it was great fun to watch her "tutt-tutt" throughout brunch. My dear, your nails were as fake as your attitude. Each of those bikes probably cost more than your car. We were all well mannered which is more than we can say for your floor show. Everyone else there was having a good time. Come join us next time because we will go back!

Great Place to take the parents

It might be a little hard to get to right now (because of all the construction going on in the Park), but it's worth it.

We made reservations on a weeknight and were told that for our party of 6 we could choose either 6:15 or 8:30. We chose 6:15, but were surprised because the restaurant was empty for most of the night. We were seated in the atrium and were treated to a beautiful sunset. As the sun set, the tealights glowed creating a beautiful atmosphere. Very romantic.

Our server was exceptional. The water was refilled promptly and the bread was replenished numerous times. She was so nice and tried really hard to make my parents' anniversary special. She even had their dessert decorated to commemorate it.

We ordered some appetizers (the squid and the crab toast). The squid was deep fried with a dark sauce, I think it was a lime sauce. The toast came with a lobster bisque to dip the toast in. They were delicious, but on the small side.

The reason I think their value is exceptional is because of their set meal. For $20, you get a choice of salad or soup, steak frites or fish and a slice of lemon tart. Most of our party (4 out of six) ordered the set meal. I ordered the salad; it was properly dressed with a light dressing. I also enjoyed the beets and cheese. I tried the soup; it was carrot, but it didn't taste like carrot. It tasted better.

I ordered the steak rare, but it came medium rare to medium. I think they might have given me the wrong steak because my boyfriend ordered his medium rare and
was given a steak that was red. I got to try the cassoulet and it was quite tasty. The pork was very tender. I didn't really like the duck or the spicy sausage that came with it.

For dessert, most of us had the lemon tart, but my parents got a creme brulee. I love creme brulee, I love their creme brulee. It was so creamy and had a nice hard sugar top. Perfect mix of creme and sugar. I liked the filling of the lemon tart, but not the crust. It would have been nicer to have a cookie crust instead of the regular pie crust it came on. The filling was just tart enough.

For the six of us, the bill came to $200 including tip. I am so coming back. It's a wonderful, hidden gem with exceptional view.

Excellent Dining Experience With One Sour Point
By vh87 of Vancouver (3 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, June 29, 2009 - 11:51pm [Dine in]

I just dined at this restaurant today with my family for my birthday and enjoyed the dishes very much. Our waitress was very courteous and friendly, and provided us with excellent service. The beautiful scenery of Stanley Park surrounding the restaurant added that final touch for a nearly perfect dining experience. However, towards the end, when heading towards the bathroom with my mother, we nearly collided with a waitress carrying food from the kitchen. After a brief moment, we tried to pass and she said, "Excuse me," to my mother who did not hear (she was not ignoring the waitress) and squeezed past her. Keeping eye contact with the waitress, I noticed that she immediately rolled her eyes, shook her head, and looked very disgusted. I don't mean to emphasize this as the main part of my dining experience, but I would like to advise that, no matter who is right or wrong in the situation such as the one just described, a waitress should NEVER show disgust or roll her eyes, or act in any other UNPROFESSIONAL way. It was disappointing to have to witness such unprofessional behavior towards the end of our meal. Despite that, all in all, I had a wonderful time at The Teahouse and would recommend it to my friends.

I attended a wedding at the venue and was appalled by the rudeness and condescending behaviour of the service staff. The food (the portion I received - part of it was forgotten) was decent, but nothing exciting. Definitely a pretty venue, although the glass roof was leaking over some of our table due to heavy rainfall.

Food good, service lacking

The food was very good but the service was a bit lacking.

We got there an hour early because I thought my reservation was for 6 when it was really for 7. They offered to seat us in the lounge, so we sat there for 30 minutes before they even came to ask us if we wanted any drinks!

The rotten part is there were these two older ladies who got there long after we had and one of the servers took their order and totally ignored us.

After we sat down, our waitress was very friendly, but when it came time for desert and coffee, she brought the desert and then didn't bring the coffee until we had ALREADY finished eating it.

To make matters worse, she brought me my Americano but didn't bring creme... who does that???

P.S. my Girlfriend had the Sablefish which comes with clams and she got sick right after dinner...

Sinday brunch is a real treat. Our croissants were great with fresh preserve, I had the West coast eggs benedict, which were some of the best i have tasted so far in vancouver. My friend had the french toast, she loved it and would have had a second helping given the chance. The service is some of the best i have experienced form around the world. Friendly and attentive without being suffocating. Basically a great place for a sunday brunch treat for anyone. I would definately return and take out of town friends here for any of the menus.

After hearing some accolades from friends I decided to take my parents who are visiting Vancouver. The restaurant is in Stanley Park, so there is nothing lacking in overall setting. The restaurant feels cozy like a mountain lodge, and coupled with the drive through Stanley Park makes the whole atmosphere peaceful and as close to sublime as a city restaurant can be. Service here is top-notch. It does not get much better, so I give a hearty 5 for service. I ordered the daily specials, and all were tasty. The mushroom soup on the regular menu is a definate thumbs up. Even the table bread is out of this world, and I wish I knew where to get it. So, I look forward to returning. This is of course not a cheap restaurant but for what it is, it is reasonably priced and well worth it. Go!

Went earlier this week for dinner at 8.30 and we were seated within millimeters of the next table; they certainly like to pack in their clientele even at less popular sitting times! I was concerned when the waitress described the truffle sauce to my friend as "a bit like olive oil flavour" and "it's not a fungus". The atmosphere was lovely, and I was pleasantly surprised by the absence of muzak that most nicer restaurants in Vancouver like to pump out. My mussels were disappointing, but my friends enjoyed their tortellini and soup. The desserts were wonderfu; I'd go back just for them.

My meal was tasty and I liked my seafood filled mushrooms, the carrot and ginger soup was average. My son (10) who had never had a croque monsieur was impressed but my husband's fish cake (which is common vancouver fare) was dry and tasteless much like canned tuna. The service was very slow, and our bill was messed up. We were not given and apologies or acknowledgment about it. There are so many retaurants in Vancouver that have outstanding views and ambience that when asked for a retaurant suggestion I will give the Sequoia grill a miss. Why has the chain that bought the Tea House and Mulvanies glossed over charm and elegance?

We have no complaints at all about the service, every person we encounter in this restaurant was respectful and very helpful. Ambiance is excellent, inside is nice, warm and cozy, and the ocean view is the best. Good appys, but I did not rate the food a 5 or even a 4 because i've had better; it was good, don't take me wrong, but I expected outstanding. They plated my cake beautifully.

Went for dinner here last Friday for the first time since this place has changed hands/names. The menu is similar, they still have the famous mushroom caps and carrot-ginger soup. Although the food is solid, you go to this place for the views. We split the seafood sampler appetizer (grilled salmon, ahi tuna tartare and curry prawns). The portion size was generous and all of the dishes were fresh and good. The server was a bit spacey though. For example, we had to ask for plates to share the appetizer and for water refills. He was fairly knowledgeable about the menu though. My partner has the 10 oz NY steak, which was decent, although the sides (potatoes, minted demi glaze) were predictable and lackluster. I had the scallops (actually an appie) with a side of veggies. They were OK, not bad, not great, came with a huge pile of useless radish sprouts piled on top. The desserts were excellent - try the sunburned lemon tart. I don't know if I'd be rushing to come back since nothing was really of "WOW" quality besides dessert, just solid good food. For the prices (which, BTW, are more in the $20-$30 range, not $10-$20) I would expect something a bit more creative and original. Maybe because the clientele is older (the majority of patrons were gray hairs - 65+) the cooking is more conservative? I'd still take out of towners here though for the amazing view.

The group who runs the Sequoia Grill also manages the Sandbar, Seasons in the Park, and Carderos. What do they all have in common? Overpriced, comical food served in beautiful locations. (To be fair, I haven't eaten at the Sandbar or Carderos recently). It is so annoying to be at the bad end of a restaurant (e.g. the customer end) who knows it can keep serving terrible food because the location brings in a steady stream of tourists that may never be in the city again.

The menu items ring of fine dining: frisee greens, braised lambshake with reduction, blah, blah. It is all empty rhetoric. The ingredients were sub-par. My spouse had the lamb, which was dry and grisly. We shared the frisee greens ($13) appetizer which literally consisted of 4 frisee leaves circling a little bite of goat cheese we had to fight over. If you ordered a similar appetizer at Bishop's, for instance, you would get three times the amount of food on your plate. How can they not be laughing in the kitchen? It is like a bunch of people are playing make-believe, a dress-up game they like to call "fine dining restaurant". We are not oblivious.

For my main course, I ordered the lobster special. It was served with green ooze pouring out of its innards and stale butter. What ever happenened to presentation? We were not satisfied with our dish, so the waitress was hostile to us. I mean, who are we to complain? Oh yes, the customers spending a couple hundred dollars.

On the plus side, I drank wine by the glass that night and the selection was amazing. The Sauvignon Blanc was probably the nicest I have ever tried. And the dessert was pretty good, too. So, if you want a place to go for wine and dessert after dinner, I definitely recommend the Sequoia Grill. You can see a beautiful view of the the city from your table.
