Nice room, good Food

Well, overall, this place is very average. Their are elements that stand out as better than others, and others, such as poor service, that is below par.
The food is very good, not mind blowing, but good. I think it could be better if they didn't try to do so much. Menu is ridiculously huge, and I'm guessing some items dont get made very often. There were definitely some freshness issues when we ate here.
It's a wonderful room, very warm and inviting.
If they paired down the menu, to the hits, and improved service, it might be worth a revisit.

Until 1 a.m, tatlows is a good alternative to the Naam for the carnivorous diner.

The menu is massive, I will agree with one of the previous postings. I don't see the need to be everything to everyone. A jack of all trades is a master of none.

The burgers are actually a bit pricey.

The lamb burger was a bit overly salty due to a slab of feta, as well as salty tzaziki- you need to be able to taste that its lamb, and you couldn't really.

AAA New York strip, I mean, for 10$, it wasn't bad. But the quality of the meat was dubious, a bit tough and fatty, maybe it needed to be tenderized more.

The person I was with enjoyed their grilled salmon, I found it dry.

Try this place out, the quality is decent, not perfect.

Pints on special are around 3.50, so thats good.

Can't decide

So we came here to watch the game last week. Not a whole lot to say, the menu is different, curries, salads new burgers etc. Lots of TV's to watch the game which is great.

A few things that I wasn't stoked on. My main issue were service/food:
1) wings were cheap like 12 cents per but they ask if you want them tossed in hot or sauce on the side, if you say tossed they charge you $2 dollars! That was the dumbest thing I've ever heard.. a tossing charge? It wasn't the money more the fact that that charge doesn't even make sense. even the server thought it was dumb. but she won't tell you it cost extra to have it tossed.
2) there's one server from mid day to about 630 so she has the whole restaurant; for games it fills up so she plays bartender, food runner, server, busser... she does a good job given the circumstance but service is obviously slow, we wait a long time for drinks to come by. The food is good, but it too is very slow; theres only one guy doing dishes/cooking.
3) The server's excuse for everything is "yah there's only 2 of us so... blah blah blah.. why doesnt she tell her boss to have someone start early so she doesnt get slammed?
4) we ordered nachos amoung other things; we all waited 50 mins for dinner to come out when it did it was either cold, dry, or undercooked. The nachos were huge but the cheese wasn't even melted, our friend said that they usually were awesome so she too was disappointed. In any event, since the cheese was still cold and not even partially melted we ate and by the time she came back we had eaten about half; we asked if she can take it back and "re-melt" the cheese, she said yah and never came back, our nachose were gone, we didn't even get them back...
4) I'll go back, it's a good place to watch the game, I was super disappointed last time but will go in next time expecting slow service. Definalty for drinks. Hopefully next time it'll be a bit better.
5) I've eaten here a few times over the years.. my rating is based on my last experience not all of them.

I went here with friends for my birthday on Saturday night. When we arrived our party was crammed into the centre of the restaurant right next to a higher bar-type table with super high chairs towering over us about a foot away. I literally felt like these people were sitting on top of us.

Service was great to begin with. Drinks came quickly, as did the appy's. I have to agree with the first review, there is way too much food on the menu to choose from!

After the main entrees were ordered (Salmon: just ok, Filet Mignon: good, potatoes/veggies cold!, pizza: ok, Pasta: bland) The thing that got me about the service was the complete unprofessionalism from the waitress. My friend ordered the Fettuccini Alfredo and it came with loaded with onions. Anyways, she lets the waitress know that she doesn't like onions and it does not state in their menu that it comes with onions. The waitress replies with a "Anytime you eat at a restaurant you must tell them that you don't want onions, no matter what dish you order. Onions are to be expected in every dish you order". Really? This is news to me! My friend then said, well it does not say that on your menu and I have never had Alfredo with onions at any other restaurant. The waitress then says, "WELL DON'T GET MAD AT ME!" (which she wasn't). The wing-nut waitress Darcy, (who by the way told us that this was her last night working because she got FIRED!) absolutely refused to go to kitchen and ask the staff to prepare a non-onion fettuccini alfredo. The only way this was happening was if she was willing to pay full price again. Finally after some bickering back and forth, the waitress says "Ok, I will be nice and pay for half of your new entree". WHAT? What kind of service is that? Needless to say, another dish was not ordered and we left very unhappy. It's really a shame, I had high hopes for this place, but Darcy ruined it for us.

No substitutions with the special

I stopped into this place after hearing from friends it was a good spot for a casual meal. As always I will be brutally honest with my review.

First off the menu is too big, 5 pages jammed full of everything from Greek lamb chops, to chicken quesadillas. Honestly is kind of silly, and took me nearly 20min to decide what to have. I finally ordered the T-bone steak special, reasonably priced at 19.95$, and served with garlic mash, Greek salad, hummus, tzatziki and pita. I found the food to be quite tasty, and well prepared. The steak was cooked to my liking, and the portion was more than generous. The service however was a bit lacking. “May I have roasted potato instead of mashed" I asked. "Sorry you can’t" she replied, "the kitchen doesn’t offer substitutions on dinner specials". C’mon! That’s just dumb. She then failed the ice water test miserably. (I put all servers to this test) “May I have an ice water with lemon please?" Most will forget the lemon (about6 out of 10 actually), this one brought me lukewarm tap water, not even an ice cube, let alone lemon.

With a little attention to detail and a scaled down menu, this place could be awesome. They offer a brunch on Sunday which I will give a try.

I would say that this is the best pub I've found in Vancouver so far. Where else can you buy a ceasar salad, new york steak, prawns, and fries for under $15? Quantity is great, and quality is very impressive for a pub. I'm picky when it comes to my steaks, and I gotta say, the kitchen staff here earns their pay very wall. Compliments to the kitchen!

It's not hard to sell this place to my friends... everyone I've introduced to this place considers this to be one of the "hidden" gems in Kits.

Great Food

I've been here a few times over the years. Usually, I come here with my volleyball team after some beach volleyball at Spanish Banks. The team's favorite menu item was the salmon burger.

Today, I took my parents there. Needless to say, as this place is a bar and grill, it seems to cater to the younger trendy crowd. We didn't feel at home but that's ok since we came for the food! The food didn't dissapoint. I ordered the Island lamb after reading about it in a previous review here. It was an excellent choice. Very nice, soft, and tender. My mom and dad ordered the salmon filet and the steak and shrimp. The common consensus was that the food was excellent. My only complaint was that the corn bread was a little bit burnt. Otherwise, everything was delicious.

Service started out really really slow. That was because there was only 1 waiter and 1 bartender serving the entire restaurant. WTH? Can't they afford to hire more staff? It was a Saturday afternoon. Despite the understaffing, the waiter worked hard to please us and was very friendly and checked on us as much as he could. Water and coffee was refilled without needing to ask. Despite only having 1 waiter covering the whole restaurant, the service was surprisingly excellent. The waiter was friendly, smiled lots, and was very interactive. I guess we got lucky this day.

The ambiance was nice and cozy. The TV screens help keep people entertained. However, the men's bathroom needs some work.

I'll definitely continue to go back there after our volleyball games.

It is ironic that this place is right across from the Naam. Tatlows has great carnivore food, great atmosphere, leather couches, a fireplace, awesome looking staff. Everything that the Naam doesn't (PUKE!).

I've been to Tatlows several times and never had a bad experience with either the food or the service. The prices are extremely reasonable, the portions are huge, and most importantly they have awesome-tasting food. For bar fair, it tastes pretty damn good. And if you can get the couch by the fireplace, it's a fantastic place for a date. YUMMM!

Thumbs Up For Friendly Staff!

As a Kits local who frequents local haunts for a pint, I was very insulted that my last post was removed because someone thought I was 'management'.

Clearly, the people posting reviews about Tatlow's have a vendetta against the establishment, and don't want any positive reviews made public.

As stated in my previous post, the new staff rocks! They're friendly, outgoing and efficient. Since Tatlow's is my neighbourhood pub, I've seen it all; however, I can honestly say that the new staff are trying their hardest to win back the locals.
I feel comfortable there, and they treat me with respect, and we often have a good laugh.

Tatlow's has potential, so give it a chance. I did, and now it's like my second home.

So, I've been reading the following reviews. I'm not management, nor do I work there, and I think this place is way better.

Staff are on the front line and they represent an establishment. It's the first thing that needed changing. In the past I'd walk in and be ignored, and it was like walking into high school. Service was slow, and food was burnt or over-seasoned, there was no oversight or management.

At least now I can see change. People greet me; they are super friendly. The old staff that didn't do jack are gone. The food is getting better, prices are more reasonable and drink specials are decent. At least it's on track to becoming a decent local watering hole again.

The review underneath is obviously planted my the management at tatlows. I've been to both, the old and the new. before the service was horrible, but we would go because they had a huge menu and the food was great. Now the service is slightly better (not enough to actually be called "service" but at least they remember to put your order in. I'd maybe give it a 1.5) but the menu is gone! we tried a couple of things, and they were all generic, deep fried. Definitely not worth putting up with the service. Tatlows owners, stop worrying about the staff and bring back some decent food!

Just don't go there! Back before Christmas I was willing to come here and see what the new owners had going on. I used to be a regular--for a good few years before that. But this place is terrible. The decor is generic and confusing-the menu is pretty pathetic and the service is a joke.

This used to be a hot spot. A great neighborhood pub with cool friendly staff, cheap beer and awesome food. Now its a ghost town. The new owners clearly have no clue. They've either fired or run out the old (good) staff, killed the ambience and upped the prices.

Boring, boring, boring. Lots of cool places in Kits so just don't waste your time coming to Tatlows any more. Maybe the owners will come to their senses and sell the place to someone who has some industry knowledge.

Great Bar, but Service Issues

The pizzas here are fantastic. We shared a selection. The bbq chicken is amazing. The smoke salmon is delicious. I love the feel of the room. Its a great hang out space.
The only lack is the service. Indifferent, and cold. I guess this could be an ongoing problem in Vancouver, but surely there must be some people who enjoy working in the bars here.
If they can fix the service, this could easily become a regular haunt....for now, I'll keep looking, but will return for another pizza I'm sure.

I have heard many mixed reviews about this bar, I finally decided to go in and check it out for myself. We sat in some comfortable leather chairs by the fireplace. Our server Amy was a cool girl, we asked what was good she suggested she pick a couple different appys for us... all pretty much a hit except for the pizza, not bad but nothing really special. We were drinking the beer special, some local brew it was only $14 a pitcher! Thats almost unheard of in vancouver.

I am definitely going to hit up with pub for some playoff games. And you should too.

Whats with the other reviewers? Way to harsh - I've gone a couple times for a quick bite and ended up staying for the night. The service is hit and miss but its a cool place to enjoy a meal in a casual atmosphere. The Burgers with home made fries are the bomb and the pastas are huge! Also the plasmas showing the hockey games are a definate bonus when with the girl. She likes it too..she says its clean and the servers are friendly to her and she likes the salads.

Absolutely Terrible

Submitted Friday, March 6, 2009 - 5:18pm [Dine in]

I had heard mixed reviews about this place so I wasn't exactly placing the bar very high to begin with. However, I was certainly surprised by just how bad the experience truly was. Arriving there shortly after 6, there were four of us, the immediate thing we all noticed was the lack of customers. But we thought this would make for speedier service - we were proven wrong. As we were directed to have seat, we chose to sit by the fireplace as it seemed to be quite cold inside. It took 15 minutes to get our first round of drinks - again the place had maybe 6 other patrons - unacceptable.

To avoid another long delay in awaiting for drinks I decided to go to the bar directly. I approached the bartender and asked for 4 shooters of the espresso vodka - chilled and shaken. Now anyone who has ever chilled a shot knows that if you put one ounce of liquid in a shaker with ice, you're going to need to serve it in a two ounce glass because of the melted ice water. So I am watching the bartender pour 4 ounces of vodka into the shaker - this process is also taking quite a bit longer as the bartender seemed to be engaged in a conversation with one of their friends who was sitting alone at the bar. After pouring the shots into the shaker and shaking it, the bartender then places 4 one ounce shot glasses out and proceeds to pour out the shots. The 'friend' sitting at the bar asked what kind of shooter that was. The bartender then to my absolute disgust as i know there is alot of mix left in the shaker, pulls out another one ounce shot glass, fills it, and gives to the man - all right before my eyes. Well that's just great I'm thinking. I just bought some total joker nobody a shot because the bartender thought that was acceptable behaviour. Needless to say after that display of service, we did not even give Tatlows the chance with dinner.

We left in disgust and never to return - Tatlows was a horrible experience

I wish I had known about this site prior to visiting some of the restaurants I have tried - seems to provide good insight not by professional critics so to speak but by the people that actually go there. I can't comment on any of the new changes as it was my first time going to Tatlows.

When we first arrived, the place looked nice, wasn't overly busy. We were directed to have a seat - not sure if thats normal or if they don't have a hostess. Our server seemed to be distracted by other events happening around her as we could see her from our table - we actually made light of the situation by assuming that she was new - maybe we werent too far off the mark based on the other reviews. The menu definitely left something to be desired as nothing really stood out. After humming about it I went with the chicken - I should have gotten anything else. The chicken was noticeably small in portion size which I might have been able to overlook had it tasted somewhat good. Instead it was overcooked and dry. When the server came to ask how things were I told her that the chicken was overdone and resembled something like shoe leather. Her response was "Really?" and that was it. She didn't come back again until it came time to present us with the bill - which by the way showed no adjustments on their behalf of a terrible chicken that I couldn't even finish. The value for the meal is far below an acceptable level. We will never be going back to Tatlows again

I am a big fan of this place as it's in my 'hood.

However, lately the bad attitude of the service staff has turned me off of going. There is a guy that works there and he's been excellent but most of the female wait staff have been precious and unhelpful.

You have to wait for everything, drinks, food, your bill etc... They are ineffective and often times ignore the customers. 55 minutes for a burger!

And I am a semi regular and recognized. New customers don't garner any better treatment.

This is too bad as the food is really good, and vibe of the place is excellent, especially now with more tvs.

I hope management reads these reviews because this could be kits finest place with a modicum of customer service emphasis and ample staffing.

Since the change of management, the food is poorly prepared and the service is slow and complacent. This was a neighbourhood favourite until recently. Below is a recap of a breakfast and a dinner recently.

Breakfast: Food - the shrimp benedict - I asked the waitress to ensure that the english muffin was toasted (it hadn't been on my previous visit) It was once again delivered untoasted with a tiny bit of avocado I could barely taste, the shrimp was skimped - not the way it used to be. The waitress never came by to check on our meals. When she finally came by she never smiled and seemed put out. No discount was given for the botched order.

Dinner: I sat at the bar for 10 minutes while the bartender yakked to the server about how hung over she was. As I was getting up to leave, she finally asked if I wanted a drink. I ordered the chicken and it was really dry. I was completely ignored. It is clear that under new management - Tatlow's is not a good experience or good value anymore. Too bad. It used have amazing hot tasty food.

Inconsistent Service, good food
By DrD of Kerrisdale, Vancouver (4 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, August 5, 2007 - 12:52am [Dine in]

This is the third time we've eaten here. All 3 times the food was good, well prepared, good tasting - the Island Lamb is superb! - but the service has varied from poor to (this time) excellent! It does, of course, vary with the number of people, but this time there were two waitresses and only 3 tables of customers (including us) so no problems.

I had the Triple A steak and prawns - only 3 prawns, and served on top of the vegetable (or in my case, salad). Nice bite to the gravy. I'd recommend you ask for one step less well done than you want!

Chocolate cake dessert was excellent - fresh, tasty, and I'm sure we were given an extra portion because we had said we 3 would share the one piece. Thanks, Vanessa!

If Tatlow's could make their service more consistent, they'd get a lot more dinner crowd, I think.

We'll be back!
