I wrote a previous review for this place based on several experiences, however, I have had many more recent experiences and noted that the review needed updating as things had improved.
I'll start with ambiance. I chose "take out" for my review type because this is not a sit down restaurant per se and it is unfair to rate an individual restaurant on the surrounding mall it is located in. The sit down area is a common area shared with the other establishments. There is Extra Foods on one side, Tasty Wok, a key cutting place and Bob's Deli and Bonnie's Bread Bakery on the other side, and Sheffiled & Sons and Gourmet cup on the other side. It can get crowded here, as this little mall acts as a meeting place, a place to have lunch or snack and a sort of community center for the many seniors in the area as they play Keno. You might need to wait for a table to vacate, so secure a table first, put your bag or a sweater on the chair to save your place and THEN go get your food. Also note - there are many seniors, families with small children and people with disabilities in the area. If you are one of those people who think that your whole environment must be filled with people 18 to 30 and wearing skinny jeans - please stay away from this mall - a mum with her small kids could use the table anyway.
It is a neighbourhood joint - not worth travelling out of one's way for, but services the locals.
Now onto the food and service:
Food is good, sometimes a little greasy, but otherwise tasty. I usually get a 4 course combo - comes with rice or noodles and three items chosen from the steam trays. Fish/seafood is a little extra (something like $0.25 per item). I usually go with a couple of meat items and a veggie. My favourite meat items is the fish and the pepper chicken. My kids like the lemon chicken. My favourite veggie items is the green beans. There are ample vegetarian choices (including tofu). There is also a nice beef & broccoli if someone wants to have ample veggies and just a little meat.
The serving portions are very generous. If I go with my kids - I usually get the aforementioned 4 course combo and a soup for myself. I ask for a couple of little side plates and extra forks. There is enough to share between one adult, a seven year old and a five year old. Without drinks - this meal comes to around $10.00. Not bad.
Yesterday, I got 2 four course combos and a large hot and sour soup. I took my order home and plated it for 2 adults and the two kids. There was plenty for everyone and the entire meal came to just under $20.00. Again, not bad!!
Cans of pop are very reasonably priced and served ice cold at $1.00 per can. No huge mark up with the bevies.
They can also serve the items in standard tin take out containers and even have catering sized containers - which are great if one is needing food for a large party or pot luck.
It is not the greatest Chinese Take Out in the city - but it is certainly doable and good value.
This food kiosk is a great option for a cheap and filling lunch.
Combos and easy on the wallet and is filled enough for 2 meals (for me at least!). The quality isn't the greatest, but it's tasty enough that you won't mind. The staff here are friendly and talkative.
My fav is the rice with S&S pork and black bean chicken.
I'd say Tasty Wok is the better of the two chinese take outs in this plaza.
