Been here twice. First time was takeout of their so called authentic Pad Thai Krung Tep and recently ate in restaurant during lunch had their Kao Mun Gai Tod, both of which did not even remotely taste like Thai food. Having travelled to both north and south of Thailand and lived in Asia for over 20 years, I was disappointed with this restaurant. The food was too sweet and like previous reviews, lacked any kick. The pad thai although flavoured with tamarind, lacked in taste of wok fried pad thai, it was too saucy and not a far cry from the other fake ketchup pad thai sold in other restaurants in Vancouver. The kao mun gai tod that was supposed to come served with a piece of crispy fried chicken was utter disgrace as it was merely a dry piece of pad fried chicken breast served with soy rice and the incorrect sauce condiment. I truly want to like this place as the room was nice but the flavours were so bland. Hopefully they take their thai game up a few notches and be brave like the Thai restaurants south of the border. Don't dumb down the flavours for Canadians, cuz we can take the heat and for those who can't, there's always Chinese or Japanese food.
Tried Tang Thai for the first time tonight, I thought it was only ok, most of the dishes had too much sweet flavor and not enough TANG (strange considering their name). The Tom Kha Kai soup was way too creamy and sweet (like a curry!) with not enough sour to balance it out. My basil pork was ok, but both of my friends had dishes they didn't like. Service was amateurish, carefully worded constructive criticism on one dish was met with a slack-jawed stare from our server. I would be reluctant to go back.
Authentic Thai food is hard to come by in Vancouver and Tang Thai has raised the bar for every other Thai place in town-this food is well made and delicious.
I stopped by on a whim just beating the evening rush so scored a window seat, the interior is bit dark so I appreciated the view of Broadway.
The Hostess/waitress is a lovely genuinely friendly person who does a great job of making people feel @ home-her English is outstanding which helps when navigating the menu-she's easily able to explain the different dishes.
I ordered the Som Tam ( Papaya Salad-blisteringly hot just like it should be and very tasty, and Pla Muk Pad Prik (Squid fried w/veggies) done with a deft touch very well balanced and of course Jasmine Rice.
Looking forward to returning for lunch next week!
Coming from Ottawa, we were spoiled with all the excellent Thai restaurants. After having been in Vancouver for 3 years, we could not find a Thai restaurant that was on par with something out East. Finally! We find a great Thai restaurant which has the flavours bang on. All the dishes were cooked to perfection. The only negative was the fried banana dish we ordered for dessert. The crust was hard. Other than that the flavours fused well and we look forward to visiting again.
We were looking for a thai place in this neighbourhood & TangThai seemed to have such great reviews that we decided to check it out. Nobody in our group was disappointed in a single one of the dishes we ordered. Since there were seven of us we were able to sample 9 different menu items, several of which were recommended by our waitress. We particularly enjoyed the golden triangle appetizer and the masamun nua. The tofu long song was outstanding with one of the best peanut sauces I've ever tasted in any thai restaurant.
Other reviewers have commented on the authenticity of the flavours here, and one member of our party confirmed that the food was just as good as what she had eaten in Thailand when she lived there.
I have to comment on the decor - normally this is not a huge consideration for our family, but TangThai has done a lovely job and obviously put a lot of love and attention for detail into the appearance of their dining room. It made for a warm and cosy atmosphere.
We will definitely come back - not just for the incredible food but the friendly, helpful service and the ambiance.
Having been in Thailand, both as a traveller and having worked in a rural village, my disdain for most Thai food served here is high. This restaurant offers and exception!
I ordered the Massamun curry (SO exciting, my favorite curry and the hardest to find), and my friend ordered the green curry with chicken. They were both excellent! Good portion size too. We had Singha beer with our meal, then finished off with coconut rice with mango- where it's slightly salty with the sweet. That's the way it is supposed to be made!
I liked the ambiance, it was not too kitschy, and the paintings of the lilawadee flowers looked great. The waitress was Thai and we had a great chat about where we need to go next time we are in Asia.
I'll be returning here again soon!
Tried it today. Food is not bad. Prices for lunch specials are reasonable. Nice ambience. Located around offices so lunch is expected to be busy. Yet they only have 1 server who is also the hostess. Poor her..yet she tried her best to serve like 7 tables at a time so service-wise was not bad. Every requests I made to her was done right away. Will go back for sure.
TangThai opened several weeks ago in the location of a former thai restaurant. TangThai is excellent overall. The decor is tasteful but muted, creating lovely ambience for dining. The owner is attentive to her diners and is willing to alter any dishes on the menu to suit one's taste. The food is by far the best thai food I have ever eaten anywhere. Flavors are subtle yet pleasing, and the presentation is outstanding. The attention to detail is truly impressive. We shared vegetable spring rolls which were hot, crisp and accompanied by a woinderful dipping sauce. The massamam meat curry had a little fire but, as promised, was completely manageable and delicious, accompanied by lovely coconut rice. The pad thai rice was excellent - colorful on the plate and pleasing in every way. The fried bananas arrived on a plate expertly decorated with mango and chocolate sauce drizzeled over the bananas and vanilla ice cream, while the many sticky rice was sublime. The total bill, under $50, was clearly an extremely good value for a sumptuous meal. We will recommend this restaurant to all friends traveling to vancouver, and we will absolutely return next time we are here. We begged the owners to consider opening a restaurant in our geographic area!
Turned up here with some friends not realising the restaurant had changed ownership. It was previously O Thai. The decor has been changed to give more warth and some amazing Thai carvings adorn the walls. I totally agree with the previous review that the Massamm curry was outstanding and the owner recommended the Pumpkin & Pork curry. This did not disappoint either with enough kick to please my wife although I would have preferred a touch more spice. The waitress was very friendly and didn't mind the mess made by our 8 mth old baby! If you previouly liked O Thai, this in my opinion is better so worth visiting again. Ambience only a 3 only because it is still new and not too busy. I'm sure once people discover this little gem the atmosphere will improve.
They got O Thai's location which is pretty convenient and accessible.
Very good traditional Thai food. I love their Pad Thai, which is very tasty and not sweet at all. Panang curry is fantastic.
Service is so-so, however. Both times I was there there was only one server, no busser (?) and no receptionist.
I will gladly overlook that for the food, though.
Great Thai food at Broadway and Fir Street in Vancouver. The place was pretty empty when we were there but there were lots of people coming in to get take out. The dine-in experience may need to be more ambient. Service was very accommodating. The food was exceptionally good. I'd definitely go back.
My wife and I have been here twice for dinner and once for lunch and have always been very happy with our meals. Flavors are always fresh and bright. We most enjoyed their Som Tum, Larb, Panang and Masaman Curry, Pad Thai, Basil Pork and Mango with Sticky Rice. We've made many trips to Thailand and the food here takes us back to the street and market food vendors we enjoyed eating at over there. Prices are very reasonable given the quality of the food and service. The decor is a fresh take on what we are used to around here. Nice!
It was a wonderful surprise to have an authentic thai meal at Tang Thai. The portions were large, the prices were decent and the service was warm and friendly. The flavors were quite distinctive and the panang curry is noteworthy, as is the Buddha vegetable dish. I am glad to have this new restaurant in the neighborhood and we will definitely go back.
