The Commissary is aptly named as the food trucks live out back and roll out for downtown lunch service during the week, while the restaurant side serves up Mexican inspired small plates, awesome tequila cocktails, Tofino Brewing Co. beer on tap and weekend brunch.
At lunch they always hit the mark. It's hopping busy most days so be prepared to wait during peak hours. The menu is ultra simple, 1 taco for $6, 2 for $10, a burrito, nachos, tortilla soaps, that's about it. The concept is they only do what they do well and nothing else. The concept works, there is brilliance in the KISS principle. We have had all the tacos and our favourites are the tuna, pork jowl, and tempura although I think they are all equally good, it's just personal preference. My hubby loves the burrito here as well. Drinks are decent and reasonable, we especially like the Caesars. The service has been efficient and congenial every time we've been here, no one's trying to pretend they're anyone they're not or trapsing around trying to serve you on stilettos. They just say flat out on the menu no substitutions so if you're high maintenance, ultra fussy or have allergies that need to be catered to this might not be the ideal place for you. Also, a majority of the seating requires sharing tables which is only a problem if you think it is.
