Sylvia's Restaurant & Lounge offers breathtaking views of English bay and a menu of traditional favourites and creative modern cuisine for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch.
The Sylvia is an institution in the West End. Watching the sun set over English Bay is a great moment in time, yet the quality of the food has never lived up to the amazing view. Lunch earlier this week was mediocre at best. The curried shrimp sandwich was poorly toasted and uninspiring, the burgers and other dishes were passable but nothing special. The service was pleasant and our waitress tried hard. Could be better!
food - broccoli soup was glutenous, thickened with too much flour, tasted like yesterday's corn chowder with broc. added.
steak - cooked nicely - actually very good, accompanying vegetables all very good.
Service was bad! Sat away from most of the other tables and promptly forgotten. Water glasses sat unfilled, dirty appetizer plates sat on the table, main course took close to an hour to come, never checked to see how our meal was...it went on and on. Dinner took about 2 1/4 hrs....we weren't really 'dining' Service was the downfall of the meal!
Nice view of english bay. Large place with a bar, patio, stage as well as a lounge type setting. It's more of an older 30's, 40's crowd. The food is great, more on the expensive side, but good. They had a live comedy night when I was there. It's a good place to have a party or bring a group of people to.
Ok, firstly I haven't been here in a few years as it was an ok place to go, despite the great view.
Something has changed ......................
The room is still the same, dated set back in time more like it, not necessarily a bad thing.
Went there on Sunday for brunch, boy was it busy they were full and we had a short wait but the host was charming and even offered us a coffee while we waited (we were cold from walking on the beach). Less than 5 mnutes and we had a lovely table not quite at the window but the view was fabulous nevertheless. The server was friendly without being familiar and very knowledgeable about the menu. We were all wondering how the menu might be, ut thought they must be doing something right the place is packed.
Brunch items mostly regular fare, stick to the classics, Ordered three different bennys and an omelette.
When the food arrived it was fast we were all quite surprised but it looked good, and tasted even better, silence at the table as we dove in and not a word till the plates were clean. Wow, that was a pleasent surprise, this is our new regular brunch place.
Before we left we peeked at the lunch and dinner menus, as expected pretty straight forward classics, these guys are not pretending to be something they are not. Lots of sandwiches and burgers with Fish & chips on the lunch menu and Dinner menu has everything from steaks, to salmon to lamb, even burgers with Fish & chips, not to mention things like nachos and cheese plates, must come and nosh on the patio what a great place to people watch and watch the sun go down amist unprtenious tranquility.
Another day definately.
Have tried their food here a couple times. Nice location by English Bay with a view of the water. Prix fixe menu we have tried is great and affordable as you get a starter , main and dessert. Coffee and dessert here is nice too by the casual sit down area where they have a view too. Food and service is always consistent.
My husband and I decided to stop in Sylvias last friday night to have a meal and a few drinks. We live in the West End and thought we should really make an effort to try this west end classic.
I can't say that I was too impressed. The view was beautiful. We sat down and it took a while for anyone to greet us. We had approx 5 different people serve us throught our meal. None of which were very attentive.
The food was mediocre at best. It wasn't great and felt like a 15 year old could have done better at home. Even the cutting on the veg was inacurate and varied gratley in size.
The decor reflected the age of the majority of the clientel. Being early 30's I felt like a baby. And while I did enjoy that aspect it doesn't really say happening Friday night.
The only thing that I can say saved them was the meals were rather large for what you paid for them. And they make a great coctail.
I would probably give this one a miss.
