Sushi bar and kitchen dishes serving wild sockeye salmon with Nishiki premium rice.
I was here a week ago, when I was craving sushi and decided to give them a try. I was greeted by a friendly server who showed me my table. It wasn't too long before she returned and I ordered their Roll Combo, that combined dynamite roll, bc roll and california roll. I thought their dynamite roll had great flavour and was filling to eat. I find alot of places make their california rolls with too much mayo, but they hit it on the spot and actually thought it was the best I've eaten in a long time. The same for the BC roll had great flavour and freshness. I wasn't disappointed with my meal, full with even a couple of left overs to take home.
I will have to return, and I think they do alot of their business on take out.
This place use to be a weekly habit until about a year ago because when we'd phone ahead for takeout, it wouldn't be ready. They'd say it would be 15 minutes and you'd still wait around for another 10 minutes after that for a simple three roll special. So, we just stopped ordering. But, a month ago, I decided to order delivery to avoid the in-restaurant wait. An hour and 45 minutes and two follow-up phone calls later, my order shows up complete with cold saggy tempura. I live across the street!!!! So, one more chance I decide to give them. I call for pick up. 20 minutes they say. I show up in 25 minutes, pay and then sit for another 25 minutes because they hadn't even bothered to put my order in. I'll walk two extra blocks and order from somewhere else. They have lost my business. And I used to tip minimum 20 percent too. Don't waste your time. Go somewhere else.
I've been going to Sushi maro since it first opened 3-4 yrs ago, and to be honest i have never been disappointed. The food is always of a high quality, and they always have a great selection of fish, some of which are not seen at most other Japanese restaurants.
Price wise, it is definitely more expensive than something like Jako and most other sushi joints around the Downtown and Yeltown area. That being said, you can expect actual authentic, and delicious food here!
The only downside is not enough seats so expect to line up or best yet ... order take out in advance and get a10% discount w/ min 20 drolls will be good choice! avoid all the crowd/service issuses by usually going at just before close of lunch or at the start of dinner (~1:30/~5:30).
Overall, these were how I felt:
- Over priced food that didn't even taste good
- Terriable and slow services
- Dirty dishes
- Waitress was talking to other staff and was unattended to customer needs
- Poor ambiance with trash on the floor
- Restaurent with poor ventilation
I was on my way home from a friend's and felt like having sushi for dinner. So I went to the closest Sushi Maro. I ordered a Pink Lady roll and toro sashimi. Per the menu, the roll has in it. However, it was overloaded with avocado and mayo. I can barely tasted the crab meat in it. I also tasted egg shell in my roll. When I left the restaurent, I smelled as if I had worked in a kitchen all day...
I will never go there again!!!
My boyfriend only eats chicken teriyaki don at Japanese restaurants. I felt really sorry for him when he ordered one at Sushi Maro. It looked so unappealing. The chicken was basically white. When he let me have a bite all I could taste was pepper. There was hardly any sauce and he couldn't bring himself to finish it. He was starving too! I also ordered ebi sunomono. Disgusting. All vinegar. The shrimp did not taste fresh whatsoever. Do yourself a favor and don't try this place. Even if you're hungry as hell. There's a nice French cafe with great food selection right across the street.
I order out from this restaurant on a regular basis (no longer). Generally the service ranges from cold to dismissive. On this particular occasion a friend and I decided to eat in. We ordered, and our food arrived, but they gave him the wrong dish. We were chatting and not realizing this he dug in. A couple of minutes later the manager realized his mistake and brought it up. We expected him to substitute the dishes and that would be that. Instead he said that my friend had already started into the food and refused to change the dish. I confronted him and pointed out that it was his mistake in the first place for serving us the wrong dish, at which point he started ignoring us completely and continued to do so while I finished my meal. I paid for my dish and we walked out with my friends meal left untouched.
We placed a take-out order for some rolls and nigiri for 3 people and were told that it would be ready in 15-20min. It was ready in 40min instead. On the good side, the fish was fresh and nigiri was tasteful. The rolls however, were disappointing: so tiny that some were falling apart. Yam Tempura Rolls have not been made with yam tempura but with regularly baked yam which was totally cold and "soapy". King Garden Roll, a 10$ chef's special roll with king crab, mango and avocado, were totally overwhelmed with mango flavour (not smaller amount of crab was possible). Also, when getting some special roll I expect 8 good pieces not 6 tiny pieces slightly bigger than tuna maki. Overall, as many Yaletown restaurants, this place is overpriced and does not provide a good value for the money.
Super fresh sockeye salmon with soft rice, melting in my mouth. Lots of chef's special rolls. Caterpillar roll, Dragon roll and Crispy california roll are my personal favorites. Great value lunch menu. Lot of fresh sashimi and variety. The servers are very gracious and helpful. The food is fresh and the atmosphere cosy. I would recommend this place over and over and personally eat here about twice a week.
