Take out....YUCK!

I had a co-worker who loved going to Sushi King place an order for me since she was going there anyways. I ordered the Beef Teriyaki Lunch box that I usually get since I enjoyed my first one last month. I usually don't like the lunch box for some other strange reason.

The service and ambiance, I am not too sure of because I wasn't actually there. I sense they have good service because they are always busy.

The food is another story. The beef was over cooked and they wasn't much teriyaki sauce drowning the taste. I did finish it because I was hungry. Next came the tempura: soggy, chalky and swimming in oil comes to mind. The California rolls were okay...just like any simple California Rolls....bland!

Good Bento

Hi, after finding this restaurant on another review site, I headed over to get a couple of teriyaki beef bento. I ended up ordering those, but upgrading (at a cost) the included rolls from california to teriyaki chicken...I also ordered chicken karage (sp).

The food was really good - it wasn't fancy, but it was far above my admittedly low expectations. I am completely satisfied with our delicious food.

As this was my first visit, I can't compare my experience to what it was like when a previous reviewer received complimentary food...but I really can't understand giving a small, family-owned restaurant a lower review because they didn't feed me for free.

Anyway, to each his own. I found the service to be friendly and personal and I will most definitely return!

Best rolls in Vancouver! Friendly service :)

Since last summer, I've visited Sushi King nearly every week. The hostess/cashier is extremely pleasant and polite. The prices are pretty good for the amount of food that you get. The service is quick. The restaurant is clean, but small and cramped so you kind of want to eat and go.

The miso is yummy (I don't eat miso soup anywhere else), and you get complimentary tea. Every time I've waited for my order (whether eat-in or take-out), I've been given free edamame, free miso, sometimes free salad and/or a sample taste of another dish. I don't know if hostess does this for everyone, or just regular customers. In any case, I appreciate it!

The rolls are amazingly delicious. Generous servings, artful presentation and yummy combinations. My favorite is the 'Tiger roll'; a big roll with avacado, tempura yam, tempura tiger prawn, crab, topped with fresh slices of prawn and avacado, and a delicious sauce drizzled on top.

Another yummy roll is the crispy crunch, which has a similar filling, but topped with crunchy tempura bits and a wasabi based sauce.

Deep fried california roll is only like, 3 bucks!

Beef bento box is generous, and the meat isn't all fatty and blubbery.

Wasn't wild about the chicken karage, but I'm picky.

Try it, you'll dig it!

Our Take Out Place

This is the place we order from on a Friday night (usually husbands turn to cook).
The food is tasty, nothing mind blowing.
This is the first restaurant my son finally tried prawn tempura and he wants it every time we order Japanese cuisine.
I like their lunch bentos, and their portions.
A bit crowded when you dine in though, but the service is good.
Delivery is fast.

Went here yesterday with my another person and my two kids. The lady was nice, pushing two tables together so we could all fit at the same table. She was hard to understand but that isn't a big deal. We were given complimentary edamame while we waited for our food to come.The food came quickly. We ordered two chicken bento boxes ($7 bucks) and a deep fried cali roll. I substituted a spicy tuna roll in my box. The chicken in the bento box was a little fatty and soggy for my tastes. The miso soup was good and so was the spicy tuna roll and deep fried cali roll. The food wasn't outstanding, but it was filling and cheap. The place itself is tiny and old looking, with no ambiance, but we spent most of our time eating while staring out the window. I will certainly be back for some fast, cheap sushi.

Amazing Food - But dont ask for X-tra Soy Sauce!

My g/f and I love the Sushi, best in the area as far as we are concerned. We eat there at least once every 2 weeks. Calif rolls, Dynamite Rolls, and most other rolls we have tried we like. Lunch boxes also great - however, when you ask for X-tra soy sauce or chop sticks...........watch out! they are obviously very worried about losing money on soy sauce because it is like pulling teeth to try & get more! Great place though ;)

Most of the food was decent

I ordered chicken udon, beef terriyaki, miso soup, sounomono, tuna sashimi, California roll, and dynamite roll. The udon was good but chicken seemed of low quality. The miso soup was a little weak and didn't taste like much. The beef terriyaki was good but very generic. The sashimi was good and tasted quite fresh. The rolls were fine.

The service how ever ruined the whole experience. The girl serving us was out right rude. The sounomono soup wasn't very good and when we told her this she said that she was to busy to do anything about it. Her manager then said that he didn't care either and gave us a refund without apologizing.

I would never go back!

It pains me to write this review because this place used to be my favourite sushi restaurant on the Drive. Although it is small, it has always had quaint, friendly and accommodating staff. I frequented there in 2009-10 and the friendly manager always showed her appreciation for your patronage by giving you free miso soup, salad, edamame, and even a sample of the chef's special. No matter what you ordered, you always left full.

Since the end of the summer of 2011, things have changed completely. They renovated the inside and I must admit it looks more tidy now, but the business practice has changed. The complimentary side dishes have vanished, and the rolls have become smaller. You can tell that the staff, while friendly, are now more concerned with the business status quo than with warm welcoms.

Maybe it's because the economy has taken a turn; maybe it's because rents have gone up or the HST has hit them hard; or maybe it's just because they decided to stop offering free stuff. Whatever the reason, Sushi King has changed and it's kind of sad.

I still give it a good rating for service. The staff are very nice. I also think the food is standard for the most part. It's just the lack of appreciation that I notice the most now. Please revive your old practices!

Deal Breaker

This restaurant used to be almost perfect. great food, great prices, and they even delivered! New staff stepped in, and perfection turned to chaos. I think my biggest beef is with the middle aged woman who now answers the phone, takes the money, etc.
Problem 1- When they stopped delivering, I made 'to go' orders. It became a joke in our family, how many mistakes this middle aged woman would make. You order spicy tuna sashimi, you got a spicy tuna cone. You order prawn tempura, you got veggie tempura. And on and on and on. I have seen the cook yell at her, so she must be wasting a huge amount of food. I don't expect her to speak English well, but knowing what the menu sounds like spoken in English would help. She also does not want to give you a receipt, which I think is a little strange. Considering all her mistakes, I like to know if I have paid for the higher cost mistake.
Problem 2- The deal breaker- Last time I went for pick up, this same middle aged woman was helping the cook make rolls (squish the rice onto the nori) and then, she took my order, handled my money, and then went right back to making rolls, all without washing her hands. All I could think of was- thank God I didn't order a roll. Unbelieveably gross!
