Kitsilano's original sports bar since 1989!
I was here for a party over the weekend and was nicely surprised at how much I enjoyed my time here. Like all pubs, ambiance isnn't supposed to "wow" anyone. It was pretty loud in there, I could barely hear my own conversation with a friend. But the seats were comfy (eventhough the cushions are in desparate need of a good wash), I could probably stay there for hours without realizing the time going by.
The food was good, but very salty. Makes me wonder if it is deliberate to promote drink purchases...sneaky cleavor! I must mention that the dessert was heavenly...especially that bread pudding with whisky sauce. To-Die-For!
The service was great, especially on a busy Saturday night. I would order a drink, shimmy on to different areas of the pub, and she still managed to find me!
I didn't like the layout of the washrooms. The TP dispenser was attached to door making for a painful head-bump experience.
A friend and I have been here a couple times over the last month. They have great weekday specials, cheap wings on tuesday, and $2.50 highballs. The service is fair to poor, which is in stading with most local pubs. All and all, a decent place to relax, and watch the game. With such a great location, they will hopefully raise the bar a bit for kits, which in my view is kinda weak. Good potential.
This is my backup plan if Zen has a line up. Normally get a table for brunch without trouble on the weekends. Tried the hobbit benny which includes mushrooms. They use back bacon instead of ham which is a nice change. Eggs are cooked perfect with just average hollandaise sauce. Rarely eat the fried has browns (more like cubed french fries). Coffee is not very good, a bit on the weak side. Service is fast and friendsly. Place needs a bit of a reno as it looks tired. Overall prices are average.
I think that overall it is a good place to go, the chicken wings rock! And overall the food is typical pub style food. You would think that with the location it would be much busier, the service from the waitresses is not that great, but the bartenders and the owners are awesome!!!!
We've been living in Kits for almost five years and it's a great neighborhood, except for the sub-average food. To eat well you pretty much have to go downtown. There's lots of expensive places to eat that don't deliver value, and cheap places that serve bad food.
For old-fashioned diner food we always went to Sophies where the food is good and priced well, but the decor is terrible and there are no TVs. No real drink menu. I would always walk past the Sunset Grill menu posted on Yew, but it looked like a King's Head-style pub sorta menu, and the King's Head is terrible. Anyway, recently I stopped in. I was totally mistaken.
The restaurant is plastered with TVs, so you can watch NFL on a Sunday morning or eat dinner and catch the first period of the Canucks game. Otherwise it is clean and spacious.
The food was good. I rated it "outstanding" but that's relative - outstanding for Kits, and not overpriced. I was really impressed with my Denver omelette: spilling with ham, not greasy and enormous. Their sandwiches are good too. Nice range of menu items. Also, a variety of really good drink specials rounds out the value with a full bar.
Service was so-so, but I overheard a waitress tell another waitress that a regular who'd just left "never tips". Once we actually chatted a little with the waitress the service suddenly got better. So be nice, folks.
Yeah, anyway I will be eating here a lot from now on. In the three times I've been here, I have not sighted one child. Not being the hip new local joint I guess all the hipster mommies and daddies turn up their noses. Woo-hoo!
I like this pub... lots of flat-screen TV's... great place for watching games... waitresses are friendly and really work hard to make sure your taken care of, and the over-all atmosphere is laid-back and quite comfortable. Food is decent pub food at reasonable prices. I great hang-out that's just crawl from home :)
I generally agree with most of the reviews here - pretty good food for a pub and the service is really quite nice.
One thing to watch out for is a friend was ripped off on his bill here - the total didn't add up correctly, which is odd since it is computer generated. Make sure you double check your total.
The food was incredible.
The carrots were so good that they tasted like a ' sweet potato '.
I will be going back to this restaurant.
I have also eaten burgers with fries at this restaurant and again the food was top notch.
I have also taken my girlfriend to this restaurant and she loved the food.
There is nothing I hate more than waiting to sit and eat Breakfast. I have been to Sunset on a few occasions and have never had to wait for a table.
The food is great. If you are hungry go for the sunset grill as it has a little bit of everything.
If you are a sports fan they have loads of tvs for you to catch the weekend games as well.
The service is always efficient if not overly friendly, and they have parking underground in the back( a huge bonus in Kits where everyone is lining up for brunch)
I've never had dinner at the Sunset Grill but I sure have had a lot of breakfasts there. The hollandaise is home made and very tasty. I also like that they serve a half benny there (only one muffin, one egg). I recommend the Hobbit Benny. It is very tasty - back bacon and mounds of mushrooms! There is also traditional plus several other types.
Sure it's a pub so you can't expect a lot from the decor but the wait staff are always friendly.
to add on to my previous posting:
okay. although many people consider this to be a bar/pub, it's really a restaurant/pub, so i guess kids are allowed. just seemed weird. i shouldn't discourage families from going here because it's a nice place and i've heard the breakfasts and lunches are great. could be a nice family outing.
If I were to sum up Sunset Grill with one word, it would be: Neighbourhood.
I've really enjoyed spending time at Sunset - the bartenders are great, the service is great, the food is pretty damn good for a pub. The cheese garlic bread is addictive. The fries come in huge portions. The coffee is never-ending.
If you're into watching sports, this is your venue. If you're into drinks with friends and not getting hassled, this is your place. If you like a good steak and a caesar salad on a friday for only 10.99 - this is totally the pub for you.
I'm looking forward to spending more time there. Give it a shot - you'll be quite pleasantly surprised.
This is a pub, and should be treated as such. If you want pub food and beer, its the best place in the area. Kings Head smells bad, Malones sucks and is only good for tourists and 18 year olds, Rossinis is for the above 50 crowd. Sunset has good food, really nice staff (hi Rick!) I've been going for abotu 4 years now and have maybe had 2 or 3 bad experiences ever. Very friendly, decent food, lots of TV's to watch the game and daily specials.
We have recently gone to the Sunset Grill for Brunch and my husband and I agree it was the best Benny in town! The hashbrowns are also homemade and delicious.
The service was excellent. The waitresses were buzzing around topping up coffees which is so rare these days. One of the owners seated us and the atmosphere was very relaxing. We may make this a weekly thing.

In all my years of pub hopping, beer guzzling, and tomfoolery, I must say that the Sunset Grill, or "the Grill" as it is affectionately referred to, is THE gem among Kits pubs.
Irish beer and food doesn't get any better, along with all the usual suspects - burgers, tex-mex, homemade soup, fish n' chips, etc.
This dining establishment gets a solid A+ for practicality, comfort, and graceful service. Smiles, good cheer, and genuine care.
Hands down, best pub in Vancouver.
Do check it out. Quench your thirst, fill your belly, and take in a Canuck's game with fellow "puck crazy" aficionados at The Sunset Grill!
And as the Irish say, Bain sult as!
I dropped by the Sunset Grill with some friends for a drink and a quick bite. We saw that they had a Dine Out Vancouver menu. The appetizer was bad ("Avocado & Shrimp Ceviche" - the shrimp was not fresh), but the entree was TERRIBLE. (Braised Angus Short Ribs). I expected ribs, but I got stewed beef in a bowl! Even worse was the re-heated salmon ordered by my girlfriend, served on cold beans. Yuck. Next time stick to pub food and leave Dine Out for the pros please!! At least the beer was good!
