One of my buddy's been raving about this place for years about how good the pizza is here and has been yappen we should get out there one day. HOLD IT......mind you I have not told him I've been here eons of times .... back in my Britannia High School days. And that day has come after filling out sports action tickets on friday..we decided to make a pit stop over here at 6pm.
Parking is everywhere around commercial.....parking meters to the front and side of the restaurant (just remember no parking on rush hours on commercial weekdays or you get TOWED) or on the side streets were there are free 2 hours spots. Anyways...the place looks the same...time warp back to the mid-1980s even-though this place has been around since 1973 from what I remember...Italian/Greek garden setting....definitely needs a new update. The place was half full and we got seated right away by the waitress.
After checking the menu, I ordered an appy of calamari and my old school favorite...a medium pepperoni plus iced tea. My buddy ordered the large No.15 pepperoni, bacon and mushroom plus a coke. My appy with tzatziki dip arrived in about 10 minutes.....excellent....crispy on the outside and super tender on the inside...plus you get both body and tentacles!! In about another 10 minutes..our pizzas arrived. Verdict....nothing has changed...same great retro style crust ( not thin like the Italian neapo style..more like medium crust) , same zippy sauce, loads of cheese and pepp...just like I remembered it!! I tried one slice of my buddy's No.15. Pretty good as well...but the bacon is more like back bacon then the usually bacon. Anyways...after 4 slices I was stuffed and my buddy had only 3 slice left of his tray!! Holy smokes but then again he's an ex-Saint Mary Huskies Offensive Lineman and I'm not!!
Overall, the food was fine. Leftovers was a must. Service was solid and she checked several times if you wanted anything else...If you wanted ice water...2 cups plus a pitcher of ice water ( got that as well). My cost was about $27 with tip and my buddy's tab was about $23 bucks with tip. Prices are inexpensive as compared to other places around commercial. Will definitely be back to try out more kickin it old school comfort food!!
Mrs. C and I were looking for chow on the Drive when we spotted SP. The place looked clean inside although the decor was a little bit dated. Service was fine throughout the meal, and the prices were decent. I had a roast lamb, which was a belly-busting portion of lamb with rice, potato, salad, and fluffy pita bread. My beloved dining partner had a spinach pie and a salad, also with the uber-fluffy pita. The food was better than expected and quite tasty.
We will return soon.
Small mom n pops establishment serving Italian and Mediterranean food. The pizza, pasta, and greek food are all solid. Haven't tried the ribs or chicken, but the tables around us ordered both and they looked great. Will definitely try these on my next trip.
Open late, so it's a great place to hit up after a sporting event.
The burger was really good at a reasonable price. I had to call it in that day because it was quite busy. The man who answered the phone was very polite and well spoken. When I went to pick up my order it was ready waiting for me. The dining area (ambiance) was dim and quiet. Although, it was busy...it was loud. The service was quick. I paid for my food and went out the door in less than a minute. The cashier was polite and very friendly. I think this place is family owned and ran by an asian family.
All my co-worker prasied this restaurant on their excellent food and service. I just had to try it for myself and they are right. It's good!
I have been ordering pizza from Sunrise for the past 10 years. I thought it was about time I gave them some respect.
I have tried pizza from all the big corporate joints like Panago, the Hut, Dominos etc etc... Not only are they consistently of lesser quality but they cost at least $5 more per large pie. Why, if you live anywhere near Sunrise, would you not order from them?
The crust is nice and thick and yummy. They give you oodles of tasty cheese. They pile up every pizza with toppings. Oh yeah! I just had one last night and finished it off for breakfast.
I will never order pizza from another restaurant as long as they are in business.
They don't waste money on making the place look beautiful. I mean its clean and looks like a classic pizza joint. Damn Im getting hungry.
Do it today. You wont be sorry.
...and no, I dont work for them. I know there are a lot of phony reviews on this web-site. Mostly for Pho and Shusi places.
Been a sunrise fan for a few years now. Their pizza is amazing! Fresh toppings, lots of cheese, wonderful crisp crust. Prices are great too, although I hear people complain about the prices being raised, they're still a lot lower than most places. The decor is out-dated, but so are half my friend's living rooms. isn't that what all the hipsters call, vintage?
Last night my wife and I ordered the Calamari dinner. It hit the spot. The calamari was heavily breaded but tasted great. Fresh greek salad. pita. tzaziki. rice. None of it was fancy but all of it tasted great. We shared the plate and still had a lot of leftovers. Awesome price point.
Oh on another note, don't order their long island iced tea. It basically tasted like rum and coke.
All in all, i'll always be a sunrise customer.
PS they deliver local (for free of course), and i've never had to wait longer than 30 minutes for my order to be at my door. Thanks Sunrise!
I have been to Sunrise many times and have never been disappointed. I've tried their Greek food, pasta, pizza, calamari, and hot wings. The calamari is my favorite but everything I've had is delicious. The pitchers of beer are expensive but I'm sure it's to cover the cost of the free appetizer that comes with it. One day my friend asked for wings as the free item we chose to accompany our lager and then later on we ordered a plate of calamari. The waitress informed us when she brought the bill that she changed our order so the calamari would be the free appetizer since the wings were cheaper and it saved us a couple of dollars. The service is always friendly and even though they have maybe once or twice have been a little slow with the bill, I appreciate that they allow you to take your time eating and relax as long as you'd like. The decor is a little outdated but it's not bad and I usually sit out on the patio, anyhow. It's a great place to hang out with friends over drinks while enjoying some food.
I had been living in Vancouver for 5 years, woefully deprived of great pizza, when a wicked slice of heaven made it's way into my hand. A lunch at work, and one of the higher up mucky mucks went and bought pizza. This is the reason they make more than us labourers.
My first bite I had with no preconceptions. I had become so disappointed with pizza in Vancouver, that I was just eating it for food energy. It took some time for the taste buds in my mouth to wake up whatever part of my brain and allow it to say, "whoa, slow down, this is AWESOME". Everything was perfect, the first hit is the sauce, then the more than amply veggies and meat. One of my co-workers asked me why there was a tear running down my cheek. I couldn't answer, I just sat there. The crust, I have decided, is the reason this is the best pizza in town (but not the only one).
Just writing this is driving me crazy for one.
It's a combination of everything, the quality of the meats, the fresh veggies, the amount of cheese is almost to much for a couple of their pizza's. I don't know if it's how the crust is cooked, or some secret for the dough, but it's soft in all the right places and crunchy where you want it.
After trying all of their pizza's over the next two years, I have narrowed my ordering down to "The Special", "The Meatlovers", and their simple cheese. But these are just my favorites, rest assured, that any pie you get from Sunrise will be the best.
If you have never eaten a Sunrise pizza.....Think of the best pizza you have ever had, now open your mouth and try a slice of theirs'. It will compare.
Now they get very busy at supper, so I would suggest pickup. Their delivery is good, but it can take a little longer than some.
Sadly for me, I have moved too far for delivery and I don't own a vehicle, so it had been a couple months since my last experience (that's what I call them, not just food). But I will be going back soon.
I called in for pick up and clearly stated that i wanted utensils and Parmesan cheese and when i got home there was only my food. Other then that the food was done quickly with great taste.
FIRE! the idiot who can't take orders correctly, I am amusing hes new?
this is about the 100th 2 large peperoni lasagna's i have order and i would like to order more
I love you Sunrise Pizza.
Went here for the first time Friday night. I didn't know anything about Sunrise other than my brother had mentioned going there for pizza in the past. I ordered a medium pizza knowing there would some left overs for te next day. My girlfriend ordered the half Bbq chicken which comes with spagetti.
The pizza I ordered was ham, pepperoni & green peppers. The pizza looked good and tasted good! Nice thick crust and generous topping of cheese. They don't cheap out on the cheese at Sunrise unlike some other pizza places. A place I will go back to in the future. Great portion and quality for the price.
We live in Poco, but will go out of our way for years to go to Sunrise because we have never been disappointed. The lasagne is the best I've ever had and the side order of fried mushrooms is a must if you order the steak. Gordie the cook/owner has been there for many many years and works his butt off to give every dish his best. If you are looking for good solid food, decent prices and an unpretentious and relaxing atmosphere, then this is the place to visit.
went here based on the reviews and because some colleagues who live on the drive swear by the food here. Granted, their recommendations are the lasagne and pizza and I had something different, so maybe I should have ordered the lasagne.
We were a party of 3, hubby had the house special pizza, which he gave 2 thumbs up. I tried a slice and the dough was nice and crispy, and there was a good balance of toppings. My brother had the roast lamb, the cut of the meat was quite fatty and the rice was hard. I had the chicken souvakli and it wasn't that flavourful, and ditto about the hard rice. So 1 out of 3 of the dishes were good.
I would have given an overall higher rating, but the service was really slow as well. The person who seated us was quick and efficient, but our server was slow and only came by once after we waved her down for water refills. There were 2 servers that night and about 5 tables inside and 3 tables out on the patio. So overall, disappointing, but I did notice that a table of 3 young guys were enjoying their free appys with their pitcher of beer.
My family and I have been coming to Sunrise Pizza since I was kid because my parents were good friends with the previous owners. Now had this not been the case, I might have walked past SP a few times in my life simply thinking "Ok this place specializes in pizza". And it does, and the pizza is about as good as pizza goes.
BUT...what most people DON'T know about SP is the hidden gem on their menu - THE GREEK PLATTER FOR TWO. Let me start by saying two people will NOT finish this platter, it's HUGE. It also happens to be (hands down) the absolute BEST, most authentic Greek food in Vancouver. The platter contains everything it should: pita bread to start, greek salad, calamari, spanakopita, your choice of chicken or beef souvlaki, rack of lamb, potatoes, and rice. Yes, not just this OR that, but ALL of that. And it ALL tastes amazing.
I have recommended this restaurant to several friends SPECIFICALLY for this greek platter alone and the responses are always the same: "You were right". Forget about the service, the decor, even the pizza...
You won't find better Greek food anywhere else in this city.
LoveLoveLove the pizza but, sadly, it always arrives soggy. The most recent was literally dripping (I don't think the wax paper underneath helps). Actually picking up a slice was not an option.
And, do not order "bacon" on your pizza; it is some sort of mystery-meat loaf sliced like bologna - not at all what most of us would call bacon.
If they could dice the tomatoes and perhaps drain them first along with other things like pineapple, olives, etc, it would help. The crust deserves better than to arrive spongy and wet.
