Sula Indian Restaurant serving authentic Indian food with great choices of traditional indian curries, tandoor baked breads, rice preparations offering vast choices of vegetarian, gluten free and vegan options for dine in, take out and delivery.
This place sprang up on the old site of Lime, so it is exactly the same layout and pretty much the same feel in decor. That's not necessarily a bad thing...
We popped by for lunch, it was empty. Nobody but else. We had our run of the place. This is not normally a good sign. The waiter seated us promptly and was reasonably helpful and friendly, though I would say he isn't quite on top of everything yet. Either that or he is a slacker, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt today.
The lunch menu seemed on the small side, but it offered a generous variety. None of those places were 8 items are essentially the same thing. Prices ranged up to around $11-12.
So how was it? Good, really quite good. Each lunch "set" came with the main dish, along with rice, onions & cucumber. The rice was done very nicely, perfectly fluffed up and tasty. No clumpy stuff like at some other places. For the mains, we had a butter chicken, lamb rogash josh and some vegetable dumpling thing. Good flavour on all of them, and each dish was distinct. I would say one of the more perfectly spiced Indian meals I've had in a while. Great mixture of spices, the heat, upon first bite, was non-existent, but it slowly built up as the meal went on, giving that kick, but not overwhelming your tastebuds. It was a great experience, unlike those other crazy places that slam you with searing heat early on and numb your tastebuds to anything else.
Meals all came with naan, which I have to say, was one of the better ones we've had in recent memory. Good texture and flavour on that. To top it all off, even though we polished off 3 meals amongst 2 people, we never went away plugged and bloated (again, unlike many other places).
It's not super cheap eats, but it's good value. Waaaay better than most of those grungy places on Main or whatever. I'm glad to see that more and more Indian places are bringing the quality and execution up a notch, hopefully it will raise the general level in Vancouver.I would recommend this place, good execution, good quality, I would definitely return again if I had a craving for Indian.
We've tried all the Indian food places along Commercial drive for lunch and dinner. Palki has a great lunch buffet and all the usual dinner options. The place is pretty clean, nice, comfortable.
The food is always good. The staff are very attentive, polite and genuine. The Butter Chicken is creamy and delicious. The naan is actually quite good and comes out fresh with just the right amount of char and crunch. The Veggie Korma is a tasty option to add if you want to get some non-meat dishes.
Overall a great option on the Drive.
I went here for the first time today for the lunch buffet which goes from 11am - 2:30pm for $9.95/person. A great price for all you can eat! The atmosphere was quite nice with a water feature in the middle of the dining area creating a lush calm sound of flowing water. However, the food in the buffet was nothing special. It was all tasty enough but only at a passable level this was definitely not outstanding or even great Indian cuisine in my opinion. The new owners at Corner Tandoori make much more flavourful dishes than I experienced here and when looking at the regular menu prices at Palki compared to Corner Tandoori I will take Corner Tandoori first anytime. Also, my partner who joined me today has been down with sore guts all afternoon and I must admit mine aren't doing that great either. Not likely returning, which is too bad, I had high hopes after reading the other reviews on here this morning.
Went for dinner last friday, and the restaurant was packed, servers quickly setup a table of 4 for us, the restaurant has great ambiance with low lighting candles dazzling on every part of the restaurant, the tables are thick heavy wood furniture. Indian restaurants dont seem to give attention to ambiance but they have done a great job adding rich colors like purple and dark grey.
Servers moved around quickly, we had 3 servers serving us and they also served the whole restaurant coordinating very well with each other our food was served to our table very quickly and 5 more candles were added to the table as each curry is brought out on a small chafing dish with candles kept our food warm.
We asked for extra spicy and it was prepared exactly like we asked they also brought us hot sauce and yoghurt sauce if one of us felt very hot or mild. Food is excellent garlic naan is top class, they have lots of vegetarian options too. Restaurant was noisy and full of people which is good for them.
Have lived in commercial drive area for long and have seen lot of restaurants come and go. I hope Palki stays.
We found this restaurant online and ordered delivery before, they seem to have a system which saves customer info, they know our address every-time we call. overall its nice to have a good Indian restaurant in the neighborhood
Pretty good food, and the lunch special is good value. They have all sorts of Naan variations - and they are delicious.
Inconsistent preparation though..."Depends on who the cook was" when asked why an ingredient was left out of a dish I had previously ordered. It's no big deal I suppose; now I know to ask specifically.
We've been looking for an excellent Indian restaurant close to us for some time, and when Palki's moved in to where Lime used to be we were hopeful. They don't disappoint - the food is fantastic, the service excellent and the price is affordable. The food stays hot because they are kept warm at the table with tea light candles as their heat source. We usually buy enough for dinner and lunch leftovers the next day.
Since I've been waiting forever for a proper Indian restaurant in my neighborhood, my expectations weren't that high; I'm just happy to get a good curry within walking distance! I was reasonably impressed though.
They've done a great job with the space, it's comfortable, clean and nicely decorated. Staff were friendly, and tried to be helpful. Since they only opened 3 weeks ago, they still seem to be a bit confused though - we had 3 different servers bring us plates within about a 4 minute span. It's also a little odd that much of the staff isn't Indian - and don't really even seem to be that familiar with Indian food.
The food was tasty! The naan were awesome. The curries were a little over salted, although still tasted really good. I do have to say though that I was surprised to be brought a huge stack of papadams before our meal, but no chutney! When we asked for chutneys our waitress didn't really seem to know what we were talking about. Eventually got some mint chutney, which appeared to be from a box - shocking! And something vaguely reminiscent of tamarind chutney.
Had we gotten a freshly made onion chutney, and mint chutney made with real mint - as we're used to in most other Indian restaurants - I would have had much more confidence in the quality of the food we were getting.
Overall though we'll definitely be back. And for the parents out there, they do have two high chairs, and ours weren't the only small people in the restaurant - before 6 anyway.
Me and my colleague went for lunch at this new restaurant on commercial drive when we saw the lunch special board outside. We were not quite sure to go in as the place looked like a fine dining restaurant. However the server came all the way out and convinced us to go in and promised that it is reasonable.
And he was right we had a hearty lunch for less than $ 15 butter chicken came with a portion of rice and a naan which was perfect for lunch. The place looked tidy and it was calm as it was not busy for a Tuesday afternoon. My colleague had chicken tikka lunch special which came on a sizzler with a naan and butter chicken sauce. we both enjoyed the chai tea which was perfectly made. The server made us laugh with his great sense of humor.
we are definitely going back for dinner sometime soon.
Good Job Palki
About time we got some great Indian food on the Drive. We have been lacking this on Commercial Drive, but now Palki has made their way down. I've been to their North Vancouver location numerous times and they have never seemed to disappoint. They just recently opened up and all I can say is WOW. The food is amazing, from the Wings from Hell to the Butter Chicken ( best Butter Chicken in the Lower Mainland), the decor is perhaps the nicest compared to most Indian Restaurants. Also they had a lounge section (where we sat) with a full stocked bar. Staff was very friendly as usual and the whole experience was great. If you are a Curry lover and love Indian food, this is a must! I will be seeing you again Palki
Was craving Indian food and didn't want to go to the same old same old.. being Indian, not impressed with most of the Indian restuarants in town, but read a few reviews so decided to try Palki -- WOW loved it!!
The food was delicious.... the naan were amazing and the everything else was fantastic! I would definatly order from them again... they do charge if you are outside the delivery area... but it is worth it!!
This is our fav. Indian place to go. Very clean and the food is very fresh. Went on Sat. night (Aug. 10). 7 people in the party and was seated right away. We were starving so actually ordered the food right away and the server put in the order for us and then came back to take the drink order. We ordered Chicken Tikka, Specialty Tandoori Meat platter, Beef Vindaloo, Channa Masala, Beef Biryini, Tandoori Naan ( the best) and Papadums. We got two sides of just rice also - 2 glasses of wine and 4 Mango Lassie's and a Chai tea and 1 pop and the bill was $130.00 - We were STUFFED! - A very good value for the amount of people. Everyone enjoyed it. I would definatly recommend this place and do!
I really love this place! The food is so good and the waiter is awesome, it's great service AND tasty food. My favourite is the prawn goan curry and the garlic naan. I've been for the lunch buffet as well and it's an amazing deal for $12. I highly recommend it.
Ordered out from Palkis, the food was great and the portion size is generous unlike other Indian restaurants where the curries are given in small foam box. The naan was huge and tastes delicious, while we waited for our food at the restaurant we were given lentil crakers and water. My kids loved the butter chicken and we would recommend this restaurant to anyone
We went to Sula Saturday at noon. The samosas were the highlight of our lunch. That was when we should have STOPPED. We ordered the combination plates (thali). I had the vegetarian which was okay. My husband had thali meat dished (chicken and lamb), which were extremely over-spiced. No hot, just way too much spice in the wrong combinations. The server was oblivious. The bathrooms were both absolutely DISGUSTING. We really wanted to like it. Fail.
I ordered a take out from this restaurant and they missed an item (which I realized after reaching back home) but charged money for it. And when I called them about it and went back to the restaurant the lady there was very rude and wasn't even apologetic.
This really speaks to how they treat their customers. And on top of it when I had the food it wasn't good and very greasy (and I am an east Indian).
Overall very bad experience and I am not eating at Palki again or ordering food from there.
I was excited to try this place, the decor and atmosphere is really nice. We ordered the samosas to start which were quite tasty. For mains we had the butter chicken and masala. Both were average. I think the food is just as good as the cheaper take out place across the street. Rice and naan is NOT included with any means, so expect to pay an extra $4 for rise and $2 for plain naan.
While the food was fine, the service was extremely slow. The restaurant was just about empty and they seemed to have a lot of staff on hand but it took forever to order, get our food, get our bill. We paid $40 for two people, without drinks, and I won't be going back.
