Surely it gets better than this...

Hey, good ratings from this place. It looks clean, neat, what could go wrong, right?
Started off nicely, the service gets a big thumbs up. They're friendly, efficient and very attentive. No problems about that.

But you know, we're here for the food. I would say the food is of good quality and is "clean" and decent tasting. I would be pretty okay with it ... if I'd whipped it up in a dinner rush after work.

Simply put, the food is quite "bland". There is not much unique here, nothing that exciting. And the ingredients & quality do not justify the price. Just for example, the steamed mussels. They came in a heavily gingered broth, which I would call boiled rather than steamed, and they were NOT fresh mussels, they were of the type that you get in a frozen pack from T&T.

Seems like nice people trying to do a good, honest job. But straight up, their culinary skills are a little bit lacking. Probably best left for a good home kitchen rather than a restaurant. Pass on this one.

Great WonTon Soup

This clean and cheerful spot has really nice WonTon soup and a decent Vietnamese chicken salad. The homemade chili sauce is outstanding and DeeDee, the owner is a sweetheart. My only complaints are the cheesy music and you have to wait for, and then request the bill - every time. It's like: "okay, I'm finished, you've cleared the plates, we're all done here..... so how about the bill????" Otherwise, a solid lunch spot.

A restaurant worth returning to, many times over
By Robert of Vancouver (13 Reviews)

In Kerrisdale, there are two restaurants serving Vietnamese dishes. Sugarcane is by far the better of the two.

My wife and I have been here 2 or 3 times since it recently opened. We enjoy the friendly service, tasty food and neighbourhood convenience. We've sampled the basic dishes (rolls, soup, coffee, rice, vermicelli) and been quite satisfied.

Why the "Solid" rating? The Vietnamese food I've had at various restaurants around town is "comfort food for the everyman". I don't expect it to be fancy or inventive. When I go for Vietnamese food, I want something familiar, tasty and predictable. In my mind "Solid" is the best way to describe this restaurant. If pressed to find other ways to describe this restaurant, I'd say "Recommended".

The staff are friendly and Deedee the owner is cheerful and welcoming. The decor is better than most restaurants of this type.

I know that we'll return to the restaurant and venture into the other dishes. Stay tuned for more reviews!

We live in Kerrisdale and love Vietnamese food, so we regularly frequent this place. It has a very nice and clean decor, the staff are super friendly, prompt and very polite.

You seriously can not beat the value of the food at this place. The servings are HUGE and the food is always good. Our favorites are the Rice Bowl dishes with Chicken or Pork with Imperial rolls. The brochette meals are also excellent as well as the salad rolls.

We frequent this restaurant at least a few times a month and are never disappointed. Highly recommended.

My Favourite Restaurant

I eat at this reataurant 2-4 times a month. I live in South Surrey and I go into Vancouver once a week to have dinner with another Mom. We eat at the Sugarcane almost every week.

The food is always yummy! I like to try food in restaurants that I don't cook at home. I have tried a number of items on the menu and I like them all. I especially like the imperial roll and chicken curry.

The service is always great. We ask for our pieces to be cut small and we ask for more sauce. They are always nice and they remember you and the way you like things done.

The prices are very reasonable and the servings are generous enough to take some home for lunch the next day.

This is one of the cleanest restaurants around.

solid non-fast-food vietnamese
By san of Kerrisdale, Vancouver (2 Reviews)

Pretty nice ambience (much better than you get with your average vietnamese joint, in any case) and service was quite nice as well. We had the beef pho, wonton soup and vietnamese pate (which translates to a palatable processed ham with a garlic sauce). Price-value is quite nice (e.g. 7 dollars for a substantial medium bowl of beef pho), and we plan on going back to try some more stuff. The wontons in the wonton soup were delicious, by the way. In terms of MSG usage ---- clearly some use, but rather mild, especially compared to similar places.

Great food, Awesome value

A wonderful addition to the somewhat-boring Kerrisdale restaurant scene! My parents have eaten here on numerous occasions and love the honest, traditional Vietnamese cooking. I have dined here a few times on my way back downtown from my folks place. I quickly learned why this is a favourite among the family. Specialities are the Vietnamese beef noodle soup, deep-fried spring rolls, chicken hot pot, rice crepe and the chicken curry. As the critic below my review might think the food is bland, that's because the kitchen does not use MSG sparingly as other typical Vietnamese restaurants do. I definitely don't have that drying mouth sensation after having a meal here!!! FYI all the rice noodles are made in house. The decor may not be award-winning as the owner designed the renovation herself, but the food will have you coming back. The only drawback is that there is not a Sugarcane nearer to my office downtown!!!

My boyfriend and I are new to Vancouver and Vietnamese food are our favourite. We heard about this restraunt named Sugarcane around Kerrisdale so we decided to give it a visit. As soon as I went into that restraunt, I knew that what I heard is right. It is really clean and the waitress are really nice. The girl who works there gave me one of the best service ever. She explained and answered most of our questions about the food. She also recommanded this dish that was totally awesome. Me and my boyfriend will definitely come back more often!

We have visited this restaurant at least 5 times since it opened in May and have had a wonderful meal each time. We've eaten both lunch and dinner and had great service and delicious food at very reasonable prices each time. We understand that they will be getting a liquor license soon which will make the experience even more enjoyable. We have been particularly impressed with how clean the restaurant and washrooms are kept. The staff is friendly and helpful regarding our dietary concerns.

I have gone in on several occasions, and I can't think of any negative comments for this place. The food is great, and the servers are always friendly and quick.

I have tried many of their dishes and haven't found one that I haven't liked.

It has quickly become one of my favourite local restaurants.
