I initially came here pretty often when their sister location first appeared inside the food court. I usually grab a few cookies, your standard chocolate, sugar, biscotti or shortbread. They're not much different, if at all, compared to the ones at their Granville Island location. It's a vastly smaller space, so there are also vastly few choices to pick from. They're good, but like most if not all of their baked goods, they are not fancy, fussy artful pieces to nibble on. For what it is, prices are constant to similar shops, but in these lean times it doesn't seem solid value.
Service is more than optimal for such surroundings so it gets good marks, as long as you don't ask the staff there for recommendations.
Their baked goods aren't suppose to wow your family or friends, but they're a good, but not so guilty indulgence.
I got a $40 cake from Stuart’s Baked Goods couple days ago. The term “Stuart’s QUALITY baked goods” got me fooled. The cake was extremely sweet. It was way sweeter than Safeway’s icing cake. My family only ate 1/5 of the cake and dumped the rest.
The cream part of the cake was made up of light butter with icing, instead of whipping cream. The decoration on the cake was nice and simple; however, I don’t think I will buy anymore baked goods from this place again.
If it were a shop like Starbucks with decent seating and decor, the price would be more acceptable. But that's not a case. It's a shop in a food court with very crowded and cramped seating situation. The food court in Oakridge Centre is ugly and crowded, every shopper's nightmare. It's really not pleasant to sit there unless you are really hungry when you happen to be there.
So you basically just buy your baked goods and go. You go find a seat in a food court. Ambience is 0. but you pay at least $4.50 for a small baked pie or something else. It's really not worth the price to eat an average pie at a cafeteria like food court for 5 bucks. The baked goods taste just like supermarket baked goods, it's no better than Safeway. Except you get half dozen for 5 bucks at Safeway, here you get one. LOL!
I believe some of the more upscale coffee shops offer dessert at that price too, 5 bucks a piece of cake or pie, some are even cheaper. And their shops are prettier and you get to have better seating arrangement.
I notice most people must walk around and take a look, very few people are buying. No lines what so ever. I think Stuart's people need to stop being greedy. Bakeries are everywhere. Some offer more delicate pastries with cheaper price, what makes Stuart's think they can price so high? Other shops have similar products too. Stuart's is not that unique or one and the only. They might be able to make money off tourists at Granville Island, but not in this local mall for local people.
