Casual greek food at cheap prices. Always a line up down the block. Nothing on the menu over $12.
Two weeks ago and after a year of not eating here, a friend and I went for lunch. The first thing was my friend found a small worm on her napkin, it was brushes away as it cold have been from the plants? Our server was rushed we waited over 20 minutes for our food. The appetizer and main courses were served at the same time. The salt & peper shakers were sticky dirty to the touch and dirt visible on the small flower vase. In my opinion the quality of food and service leaves much to be desired. Will not eat here again.
Nobody in Vancouver and I mean NOBODY can beat the price and quantity and taste of the lamb dinner from Stepho's... the briami is delish...
My recommendation: call ahead and order for take-out... then go home and enjoy it in peace without the long lineups and the noisy tourists...
There's enough food to have dinner and save leftovers for both the next day's lunch and dinner... seriously... two to three meals for each lamb dinner you order...
And it's all under $10!!!
im not sure if its me or the light in the restaurant is alittle too dark that i'd ask the waiter to turn the light on brighter because one i cannot see my food, two for my own opinion i think when im eating i deserve to have a better view of what im eat other than that the food was incrdible the service was only well respectful and friendly
My friend and I waited outside for about 30 minutes - though it was to be expected. They had heaters outside the restaurant, since this is how it usually goes. I had the Spanakopita first. The phyllo was extremely tough, I had a hard time picking it apart. It was tasty though. They served two huge pieces, which I had the mistake of finishing before my Calamari dinner arrived. The dinner was HUGE, and I had to take 2/3 of it home in a baggie... unfortunately, the grease leaked out of the styrofoam box and soaked the brown bag in grease.. I am a huge calamari fanatic, and here, it was average. I've had better at Olympia on Broadway (where service is spotty).
Lining up at Stepho's is a rite of passage for Vancouverites - it's something that everyone has to do at least once.
I remember my first time - I was so famished that I just stared at the couple at the front window savouring their lamb plate. It's like a cruel show and the anticipation just makes your hunger multiply by the second.
Stepho's is great - good solid food, the best rice and potatoes, fresh Greek salad and their Lamb plate is one of the most tenderest meats I've ever eaten - it just fell off the bone and melted in your mouth - agh! Mouth watering yumminess!!!
On the downside - i have experienced some inconsistencies throughout my 8-10 trips to Stephos. The skewers are sometimes dry and the food comes out semi-warm - they definitely have their on days and off days. One thing for sure is that the quantity never changes and for the amount of food they give you, the value is hard to beat!
Food: Awesome! Inconsistencies are there but still better than your average Greek place.
Service: Fast and furious - it feels like they don't get a break and some of them forget to smile at times.
Ambiance: Love it! It has the buzz of a busy eatery.
I've been to Stepho's more times than I can count, and it's almost always great if you don't mind waiting in the lineup. However, the last time I was there for lunch, it was mediocre because of the appetizers. The calamari was truly awful, hard and overcooked, which was surprising as it's normally great. The cheese balls were not as good as usual, either, but the roast lamb was delicious. I regret not sending the calamari back and tiraboukes back.
Last time I went to Stepho's with a friend we had to wait for about 20 mins to get a seat but the annoying part was that we were pretty much front of the line and the hostess took down the names of people who came later than us and totally ignored us until someone pointed out that we were actually before them.
Sat down not too far from the door in the aisle and there were other seats available but the hostess said we couldnt sit there. O wells we thought.. so we ordered and after 30 mins for waiting for our food and drinks the server comes backas and says she forgot to put our order through to the kitchen. She then took our order for a 2nd time and then 2 mins later our food comes out.. turns out she did remember to put it in. The food was yummy like always alittle bit dry but excellent
After eating our meal we than asked for the check..we get the check and it was actually already paid for by mastercard.. but my friend and i didnt pay for the bill yet. My friend being the nice person decided to tell the incompetent server that we actually did not pay for our bill and then paid for the bill
Next time I go I hope I don't get the same server .. the yummy food was worth the bad service
Since coming to Vancouver we have heard alot of suggestions about where to eat out. Stepho's was one of them, and I'm glad we went. The food was not high-end by any means but neither were the prices. For the money this place is a deal. The service was excellent, with the food arriving only moments after we ordered it! There is alot to be said about food that arrives piping hot. Our waiter was also quite attentive. What more can you ask for @ $7.99 for an entree! A thumbs up for Stepho's!
Stepho's is the restaurant i order out from the most. The food is dirt cheap, the portions are very generous, and the lamb is tender enough to cut with a cheap plastic fork.
The line-ups, however, suck. Take-out is the way to go. However, lunchtime isn't as busy and is a good time to try this place. All-in-all, Stepho's is undeniably a West End icon and is very popular with locals and visitors alike.
The kalamari is good, I almost always get the roast lamb which has to be one of the best deals in the city.
The avgolemono soup with fresh squeezed lemon is fabulous. The roast lamb platter and souvlakia are tasty. Don't come expecting fine greek cuisine. This is assembly line food by the numbers. But the quality and consistency better the cost and the masses keep coming back in droves.
The only gripe I have besides potentially waiting forever in line is there's no draft beer served, only bottles.
Long Lineup in front? Good food?? I wonder people here has tasted any decent Greek food. Stepho's greek food quality is comparable to greek "fast food" and on top of the slow service, I just don't think it worth your money and time.
My friends and I decided to check out Stepho's. There was this huge line up out side, I have never ever seen that before! In Alberta, you don't have lineups outside!
We got in fairly fast. The waiter forgot about our drinks, we had to keep on reminding him. The food was awesome. I've eaten at a lot of Greek resturants; this one was by far the best. I just don't like the cramped quarters that they have everyone sitting in!
I highly recommend Stepho's to people like me who are visiting Vancouver!
Don't get me wrong -- Stepho's is good. But it's just good, not great. The food is reasonable. The service is reasonable. The prices are reasonable. And yet, I always see 20-30 people lined up outside. Why? There's nothing here worth waiting for. It's a perfectly nice place, but I'm unlikely to ever go again because I'm not waiting in line for something that's only "good".
Maybe I'm picky, but it has to be something darn spectacular before I'm lining up for it.
This is a good place to eat, if you do not have to wait for 20 min on line., Ambience very nice and prices decent. Only I really do not like the proportional amount between rice potatoes and protein (meat).
This is the winning combination here ... the roast lamb, calamari, souvlaki's ... I've had better but at double the price so Stepho's wins on balancing pricing and quality imho. The proof is in the pudding with their formula of success with the continual lineups to get in at almost anytime of day.
I know Stepho’s is a popular Greek restaurant in Vancouver and I can see why. It’s well priced, the service is fast, and if you’re craving Greek food it’s a good place to get your fill. However, if you’re looking for top-quality food than Stepho’s might not be the place to go. I know Greek food well and although Stepho’s is solid, there are better Greek restaurants out there.
My girlfriend and I have gone to Stephos on several occasions for one thing- Their home made CHEESE BALLS! We have never waited in line there as it's not worth it. If there is no line up we'll pop in for a quick lunch. As I've stated they have the best Cheese Balls I have ever had which come with their garlic parmesan spread/dip. We went to Greece last year and IN Greece we could not find better Cheese Balls. If you ever go in you MUST try them. It's the first item on the Appetizer menu. As for everything else it seems to be hit and miss. I usually order a Spanakopita and some times it tastes fresh and great and other times like it was bought from the Costco freezer section. The Greek salad tastes like regular Greek salad. Overall it's middle-of-the-road food at a great value. I recommend this place for a quick lunch if there is NO line up!
We love Stephos and visit frequently. Huge fan of their souvlaki and calamari and the roast lamb and that veggie stew that comes with the lamb. Potatoes are something special. Awesome Tzatziki. We have always had great service from very busy waiters - yes things are hectic, but I have never felt neglected. And the price and the quantitiy of the food make the wait well worth it.
I previously wrote a review for stepho's which was a little mixed, but after having a few more COMPLETELY horrible experiences I think I need to take back my previous statement. It seems like they have changed up the service staff at Stepho's - big mistake. The new servers at the restaurant are so unprofessional that it simply blows my mind that people are willing to put up with it. I have seen numerous people getting up from their tables to get pitchers of water to fill up their glasses because there weren't any servers in sight. Cold dishes, undercooked food, wrong orders, incompetent staff, and dirty cutlery. How many things can you turn a blind eye to? I am now done with stepho's, you shouldn't have to compromise so much when paying for a meal.
* Even though there are many people eating at this restaurant, the Service is good and FAST! FAST!
*The food quality is really good, and the portion, which I really like, is LARGE.
*The washroom is really dirty, and the kitchen floor dirty--kitchen should ALWAYS be clean even though the restaurant is very busy. Also, cleanliness is VERY VERY important in any restaurant.
This restaurant has problem with cleanliness; however, on the other hand, the quality of the food and the service is really good. No wonder why there are so many people wanting to wait and be in line instead of going to a different restaurant nearby. Anyway, I recommend this restaurant to everyone, and if the owner have the chance to see my review, I just want you to know that you should expand your restaurant so that many more people will come in.
