Casual greek food at cheap prices. Always a line up down the block. Nothing on the menu over $12.
I have to say, Stepho's is probably the best Greek restaurant in Vancouver in terms of value. There are other fine Greek restaurants but they all overcharge for what you get. I don't know how this place charges so little for such huge portions. But it's not just the quantity but it's pretty tasty too. Some of the below reviews say the souvlaki wasn't good but I enjoyed mine every time...especially the chicken. The spanokopita is excellent as the phyllo crust is nice and crisp. The roast lamb, lasagna and the barbecue chicken dinner are very good. The clams are very good too. Make sure you save some pita bread to dip into the broth.
Some reviewers have complained about the calamari and I too have tried it when it was good and bad. My friend and I talked to one of the cooks there and he claims it depends on the supplier. The pregutted and cleaned calamari does not taste good as it's too mushy. However, I've been lucky lately as the calamari has been pretty good. Maybe there were a lot of complaints.
All of the above mentioned dishes are good but the best is the ribs. It's not on the menu as it's only available as a "special of the day" which is on Sunday and Thursday. I've tried it only handful of times as it's always sold out....dammit! It's so good. The meat falls off the bone easily and it's very juicy. The sauce has a little kick to it which makes it even better. Makes you drool, doesn't it?
I've been to Stepho's more times than I can count, and it's almost always great if you don't mind waiting in the lineup. However, the last time I was there for lunch, it was mediocre because of the appetizers. The calamari was truly awful, hard and overcooked, which was surprising as it's normally great. The cheese balls were not as good as usual, either, but the roast lamb was delicious. I regret not sending the calamari back and tiraboukes back.
Last time I went to Stepho's with a friend we had to wait for about 20 mins to get a seat but the annoying part was that we were pretty much front of the line and the hostess took down the names of people who came later than us and totally ignored us until someone pointed out that we were actually before them.
Sat down not too far from the door in the aisle and there were other seats available but the hostess said we couldnt sit there. O wells we thought.. so we ordered and after 30 mins for waiting for our food and drinks the server comes backas and says she forgot to put our order through to the kitchen. She then took our order for a 2nd time and then 2 mins later our food comes out.. turns out she did remember to put it in. The food was yummy like always alittle bit dry but excellent
After eating our meal we than asked for the check..we get the check and it was actually already paid for by mastercard.. but my friend and i didnt pay for the bill yet. My friend being the nice person decided to tell the incompetent server that we actually did not pay for our bill and then paid for the bill
Next time I go I hope I don't get the same server .. the yummy food was worth the bad service
Since coming to Vancouver we have heard alot of suggestions about where to eat out. Stepho's was one of them, and I'm glad we went. The food was not high-end by any means but neither were the prices. For the money this place is a deal. The service was excellent, with the food arriving only moments after we ordered it! There is alot to be said about food that arrives piping hot. Our waiter was also quite attentive. What more can you ask for @ $7.99 for an entree! A thumbs up for Stepho's!
Stepho's is the restaurant i order out from the most. The food is dirt cheap, the portions are very generous, and the lamb is tender enough to cut with a cheap plastic fork.
The line-ups, however, suck. Take-out is the way to go. However, lunchtime isn't as busy and is a good time to try this place. All-in-all, Stepho's is undeniably a West End icon and is very popular with locals and visitors alike.
The kalamari is good, I almost always get the roast lamb which has to be one of the best deals in the city.
Long Lineup in front? Good food?? I wonder people here has tasted any decent Greek food. Stepho's greek food quality is comparable to greek "fast food" and on top of the slow service, I just don't think it worth your money and time.
Thhis restaurant has great food, reasonably priced, big dishes, awesome ambience. Highly recommended. Careful of the lines for dinner especially during weekends. Lamb and Chicken is good so are the tavernas.
Don't get me wrong -- Stepho's is good. But it's just good, not great. The food is reasonable. The service is reasonable. The prices are reasonable. And yet, I always see 20-30 people lined up outside. Why? There's nothing here worth waiting for. It's a perfectly nice place, but I'm unlikely to ever go again because I'm not waiting in line for something that's only "good".
Maybe I'm picky, but it has to be something darn spectacular before I'm lining up for it.
This is a good place to eat, if you do not have to wait for 20 min on line., Ambience very nice and prices decent. Only I really do not like the proportional amount between rice potatoes and protein (meat).
This is the winning combination here ... the roast lamb, calamari, souvlaki's ... I've had better but at double the price so Stepho's wins on balancing pricing and quality imho. The proof is in the pudding with their formula of success with the continual lineups to get in at almost anytime of day.
I know Stepho’s is a popular Greek restaurant in Vancouver and I can see why. It’s well priced, the service is fast, and if you’re craving Greek food it’s a good place to get your fill. However, if you’re looking for top-quality food than Stepho’s might not be the place to go. I know Greek food well and although Stepho’s is solid, there are better Greek restaurants out there.
My girlfriend and I have gone to Stephos on several occasions for one thing- Their home made CHEESE BALLS! We have never waited in line there as it's not worth it. If there is no line up we'll pop in for a quick lunch. As I've stated they have the best Cheese Balls I have ever had which come with their garlic parmesan spread/dip. We went to Greece last year and IN Greece we could not find better Cheese Balls. If you ever go in you MUST try them. It's the first item on the Appetizer menu. As for everything else it seems to be hit and miss. I usually order a Spanakopita and some times it tastes fresh and great and other times like it was bought from the Costco freezer section. The Greek salad tastes like regular Greek salad. Overall it's middle-of-the-road food at a great value. I recommend this place for a quick lunch if there is NO line up!
I've been here only a few times, but that's all I need to safely say that the food here is nothing short of incredible. I've had lamb each time because I could not resist. It's just so damn good. The lamb is so tender, juicy, tasty, and it goes so perfectly well with the rest of the goodies they serve: rice, potatoes, greek salad, vegetables, and bread. All of this for less than $10 (assuming that you drink only water which what I do).
I always leave there stuffed to the nines, but I am oh so satisfied with my meal. Whatever shortfalls this place has can easily be overlooked and/or compensated by its food. I cannot think of any other place to have great Greek food like this at such a reasonable price! I'll come here again and again until I am proved wrongly.
Food is regular, nothing extraordinary, except cheap prices compared to other westend restaurants. Decor and cleanseness on the other hand, was just Nasty. Very retro 90's vibe, which I don't mind. But the cutlery with degreaser stains was just gross and I don't even bother using the washroom; it's a nightmare - only two single person washroom, one per sex. Stepping into the washroom was like walking into hell. The food nor the price does not justify dining a dumpster.
Boyfriend and I decided to come here for a quick and cheap eat on a cold winter night sometime last year. I had been here once several years ago but my memory of that experience escapes me.
We didnt have to line up outside the restaurant luckily, but still had to wait 15 - 20 minutes for a table inside the restaurant. Was it worth it? Cheap yes.. but I would say no. Yes, the portions are huge, which is great if you are actually hungry enough to finish the entire thing in one sitting because the leftovers are really gross the next day.
Boyfriend had the calamari set meal, i had the braised lamb.. neither was anything to write home about quality-wise. My lamb was nice and tender but was lukewarm and lacked flavor. Service was very minimal: seat customer, take order, bring food, bring check. The restaurant is of course hustling and bustling and lots going on around you, so not a place to bring your date for a romantic dinner (although the did light candles at each table..)
I guess for the prices you can't really complain too much but this is vancouver we're talking about.. plenty of places offering cheap eats without necessarily slaughtering the quality of food / service. I say check out stephos at least once just for the novelty of it, but i wouldn't plan regular visits here when there are so many other better options.
This is cheap food with good taste but a bit too oily. It is decent for the value that is offered at, you are paying fastfood price for greek food. It is definetly not worth the line up! would recommend take out if you live closeby and want something reasonably priced!
I previously wrote a review for stepho's which was a little mixed, but after having a few more COMPLETELY horrible experiences I think I need to take back my previous statement. It seems like they have changed up the service staff at Stepho's - big mistake. The new servers at the restaurant are so unprofessional that it simply blows my mind that people are willing to put up with it. I have seen numerous people getting up from their tables to get pitchers of water to fill up their glasses because there weren't any servers in sight. Cold dishes, undercooked food, wrong orders, incompetent staff, and dirty cutlery. How many things can you turn a blind eye to? I am now done with stepho's, you shouldn't have to compromise so much when paying for a meal.
* Even though there are many people eating at this restaurant, the Service is good and FAST! FAST!
*The food quality is really good, and the portion, which I really like, is LARGE.
*The washroom is really dirty, and the kitchen floor dirty--kitchen should ALWAYS be clean even though the restaurant is very busy. Also, cleanliness is VERY VERY important in any restaurant.
This restaurant has problem with cleanliness; however, on the other hand, the quality of the food and the service is really good. No wonder why there are so many people wanting to wait and be in line instead of going to a different restaurant nearby. Anyway, I recommend this restaurant to everyone, and if the owner have the chance to see my review, I just want you to know that you should expand your restaurant so that many more people will come in.
Amazing food, I always get the lamb platter it's phenomenal. Servers are wonderful and prices are out of this world. Love it! Worth the wait in line, goes by quickly anyways.
The food comes out very quickly so if you're really hungry and need a goo place to fill up you won't have to wait longer than 10 minutes for sure.
I am not Greek (3rd generation Canadian) and I love this place. The lentil, the roast lamb (very expensive though), the sauces and the bread are all top notch and filling. Sometimes I think I want to order another lamb plate. I bring my wife here too but it is a little too expensive so mostly friends meeting and special occasions not to mention because of the fanatstic meat and marination they are always busy so beware.
