Casual greek food at cheap prices. Always a line up down the block. Nothing on the menu over $12.
I know Stepho’s is a popular Greek restaurant in Vancouver and I can see why. It’s well priced, the service is fast, and if you’re craving Greek food it’s a good place to get your fill. However, if you’re looking for top-quality food than Stepho’s might not be the place to go. I know Greek food well and although Stepho’s is solid, there are better Greek restaurants out there.
It's always silly to see people line up for this place, knowing full well the food is just average.
Went there for lunch the other day, the plastic table cover was ripped, chair next to me had a huge ripped hole with foam sticking out, dirty cutlery (had to take one from another table), the place was dark and dirty (even for daytime), didn't even want to see what the washroom looked like.
As for the portion size, let's take the popular chicken souvlaki for example. Sure you get a great amount of food, but the quality is just average, rice is really bland, potatoes were good, and you can't really screw up the greek salad, and the chicken was standard....nothing mind blowing. The whole quantity over quality thing induces images of mindless farm animals wolfing down low-grade feed. As for the price/value, well, you get what you paid for.
Bottom line: there are PLENTY of excellent greek restaurants in town, but don't fuel the hype and line up for this one.
Please note a 'two star' rating is considered 'Decent' (average, passable), not 'Poor'.
Heard lots of great things about this place before attempting to get in the long daily lines.
In the end, it is ok to average greek food served by the bucket load for portion sizes. The chicken souvalki was ok, the calamari was chewy and the rice was bland. If a huge pile of average tasting food is your thing, then you will love this place.
If they reduced their portion sizes, I am guessing that the line ups and hype would follow suit.
I've been going to Stepho's for 10yrs and loving it. Still a Vancouverite favourite - if you wanna be like the locals, order take-out or you'll be waiting a long time in line outside.
The moussaka and souvlaki are our comfort food favourites, always large portions, and still as good today as it was when I first started going over 10yrs ago.
My 3 out of 5 = Okay'ish ... NOT Solid.
I went on a Saturday around lunch time and we had to wait outside for about 15 minutes which is alright I guess since I've waited around that time at other places such as the Keg, Cactus Club, or even Sammy J Peppers.
The price is okay considering how much you get BUT I would rather pay a few bucks more and get less IF it meant that the food was better in quality and taste.
The spanokapita was good. The lamb souvlaki was CHEWY!! My mouth was EXHAUSTED after eating that. I didn't like it at all. The meat wasn't so flavorful and of course, it took about 5 minutes to chew each piece of meat.
I also do not understand the hype about this place. I think most people are jumping the band wagon to be honest. I've had better Greek food elsewhere.
Over all: 3 out of 5. I consider this an okay place but nothing special and I'm still scratching my head about the hype around this place.
Looking for a place to have lunch within an hour, Stepho's can do it. No waiting for a table, service, or your meal.
The small souvlaki had rice over 3/4 of the plate along with a greek salad, roasted savory potatoes, pita bread and 1 skewer of lamb-which was all to perfection.
So much food left over, easy to take the rest home for another meal.
Can't beat the price. Somewhat Romantic with the candles and the house wine is not bad either. I have never been disappointed. worth the wait. My last visit was with a party of six and even with a bottle of wine and plenty of starters the bill was under 100...
I dont know why people think this place is so great. To have to wait outside for 25 minutes is insane, it's nothing special. The food is okay, nothing special. The prices are great. The service is slow, unfriendly and pushy. After going to this place I wish I didnt wait for food I could have got at a pub.
The quality of the food is not the greatest, but its pretty damn good for the price. It just depends on how much importance you place on quality over quantity. The calamari was slightly overcooked, and the batter was falling off the squid. The meatballs were also overcooked, but tasted really good. The roast lamb was also very delicious. The service was very good for such a busy place. My two friends and i waited for about 30min to be seated, which wasn't that bad considering the value...it just made us more hungry...Typical greek ambience...one complaint that I have is that the door would open every once in awhile due to the large lineup and a gust of cold air would come in...other than that, I would definitely visit here again if I had time to wait in line. Can't go wrong with such a large plate of food of good quality for such a cheap price.
We love Stephos and visit frequently. Huge fan of their souvlaki and calamari and the roast lamb and that veggie stew that comes with the lamb. Potatoes are something special. Awesome Tzatziki. We have always had great service from very busy waiters - yes things are hectic, but I have never felt neglected. And the price and the quantitiy of the food make the wait well worth it.
I ordered take out a couple times and also dined in 3 times past 5 years or so. Doesn't seem to have changed much, food is ok and the price is good. But then again a Mustang is cheap compared to a Porsche for a reason... not sure how good the quality of meats are or if the vegetables are ridden with pesticides from USA.
Service can be decent to poor. Side dips are outrageously overpriced, yes you have to pay for them. Greek salad sides are also too expensive for the poor vegetables and don't ask for a side greek salad with out the rice with your meal... they charge more... silly.
WASHROOMS ARE TERRIBLE, like a third world country.
i think that the fact that this place is really cheap catches atention from everyone but the real thing is that its not really good, the food it's not fresh, it has a weird taste and it is definitely not worth it, i end up spending money in something i really didn't like and had to go it somewhere else so, its a no here.
Well I'm never going back there TERRIBLE SERVICE! INCOMPETENT WAITRESS!(who was absent for most of our meal) , FOOD was OK BUT NOT WORTH WAITING OVER AN HOUR FOR !
It wasn't as bad at first but as time went on the service went downhill . The waitress messed up our order and missed 2 items we asked for. Entree was burnt and over salted. I was never asked if I wanted another glass of wine. The manager was not in charge, he had no control over his staff. This was the worst way to kick start a weekend! I give it a F for failure.
Do not go to this place. Just moved back to Vancouver after 8 years and decided to visit my favorite restaurant Stepho's!
Going to Stepho's was the worst experience money can buy. Food was cold, the roost lamb was more fat than meat and it was uncooked. The service was horrifying, I was waiting at my table for 30 min and no one came to take our order so I asked about the possibility of ordering my food and the waitress went crazy she said : I have other s#### I need to do man!
I finished my lunch and paid my bill walked out of the restaurant and will not go back ever again! This is how you lose a costumer how actually remembers when food and service was good in this restaurant.
Several of my friends told me about food poisoning cases in the Robson street location.
Stephos used to be one of our favourite places to go for lunch or take-out, but it went though a rough period for a few years. I tried it again recently a few times and I am very happy with it.
First of all, go for lunch rather than dinner if you can. There is a lot more room at lunch and service is faster - unless you like waiting in lines for dinner (and for the upcoming summer, dinner means any time after 3pm on weekends). Second, you will probably be taking home leftovers. If you are taking the bus home or have a long commute coming, you may want to ask for a second bag or bring your own bag. If the brown bag they have gets shaken around, the grease tends to leak, weakening the bag.... I have had take-out many times and have had this experience with their bags a few times...
Their chicken souvlaki is probably the best out of the meats. The roast lamb is hit and miss - plentiful but obviously not as good as a more expensive restaurant . Kalamari is still a solid, plate filled dish. There are a lot of other great options on the menu and pretty much everything comes in large portions.
Stephos remains a good place for cheap and filling Greek food. The prices have not gone up in the past decade!
I am really, really trying to figure out why people line up here - it must be the value because it certainly isn't the food or ambiance.
It was pretty OK. It was basically OPA but a the potatoes weren't dripping grease and the pita was good.
Our server seemed nice enough, but not the brightest girl. We both ordered lamb souvlaki and for some reason she thought we wanted to share one order. REALLY?! Did you honestly think we wanted to share one plate of food between us? Do I look that broke? Maybe I need to shave or something. To be fair to her, she did bring out the second order rather promptly (e.g. 10 mins).
As mentioned above, it tasted better than OPA for literally the same price. As a result, I'd have to say value is outstanding.
Old. Maybe you have to be trendy to find 80's furniture cool, but I'd rather go somewhere slightly more updated.
Would I return? probably not. Would I line-up? not if it was free.
The only reason I tried Stephos is because they promised that it's a MUST place when in Vancouver.
Well, I didn't mind the lines if it was going to be this good. It was! Once we got in, I ordered the Calamari and the Lasagna for my wife.
Loved them both! The food is absolutely amazing, the portions are very big and it's cheap! It's impressive how a place like that is so cheap!
Looking forward to trying it again. Staying in Vancouver for 2 months...
Only a complete sucker would wait in line for such mediocre food and terrible service. I previously wrote a review for stepho's which was a little mixed, but after having a few more COMPLETELY horrible experiences I think I need to take back my previous statement. It seems like they have changed up the service staff at Stepho's - big mistake. The new servers at the restaurant are so unprofessional that it simply blows my mind that people are willing to put up with it. I have seen numerous people getting up from their tables to get pitchers of water to fill up their glasses because there weren't any servers in sight. Cold dishes, undercooked food, wrong orders, incompetent staff, and dirty cutlery. How many things can you turn a blind eye to? I am now done with stepho's, you shouldn't have to compromise so much when paying for a meal.
I have been going to stepho's for almost 8 years at least once every 2/3 weeks. The food is really good, but there have been times where things were a little off (rice/potatoes/carrots being a little undercooked). It's not the cleanest place, but it's not anything offensive. I have noticed the restaurant goes through periods where it's amazing, simply top notch, but there's also periods where you leave a little disappointed - but I do believe that's because of the expectations you make from having previous amazing meals.
Overall, a great casual Greek restaurant in Vancouver. Have been going there for year, and will continue to do so as as far as I can see.
Popped in with a friend for a quick bite, mid afternoon, Calamari and Fried Greek Cheese, and Pita bread. We were seated next to the kitchen/bathroom in an area that was constant traffic area. When the waitress did take our order, we were shocked to hear the kitchen staff only feet away, arguing and raised voices. Whe our Saganaki did arrive it was luke warm and already rubbery. The piece of cheese itself was very small portion. We finished the cheeses before our Calamari arrived and that was a major letdown as the squid was mostly bit ends, all crunch little meat. It was also a sad small portion that was not at all what I had expected. Sadly, the waitress didnt ask or enquire if we enjoyed anything, she dropped the plates on the table and was off. Our waters were refilled by the busser, who also noted the lackj of care. We had just figured a quick snack would tide us over til dinner, but on the way home we had to stop on Fraser St. to buy samosas and aloo tiki. I would not come here if you care about taste or service. It has gone downhill for some time. I would rather pay more and have staff available that are gracious and not rushing around like chickens with heads cut off. Another old fave bites the dust for us.
