Too much hype, not enough service

I dont know why people think this place is so great. To have to wait outside for 25 minutes is insane, it's nothing special. The food is okay, nothing special. The prices are great. The service is slow, unfriendly and pushy. After going to this place I wish I didnt wait for food I could have got at a pub.

The quality of the food is not the greatest, but its pretty damn good for the price. It just depends on how much importance you place on quality over quantity. The calamari was slightly overcooked, and the batter was falling off the squid. The meatballs were also overcooked, but tasted really good. The roast lamb was also very delicious. The service was very good for such a busy place. My two friends and i waited for about 30min to be seated, which wasn't that bad considering the value...it just made us more hungry...Typical greek ambience...one complaint that I have is that the door would open every once in awhile due to the large lineup and a gust of cold air would come in...other than that, I would definitely visit here again if I had time to wait in line. Can't go wrong with such a large plate of food of good quality for such a cheap price.

Well worth the wait

We love Stephos and visit frequently. Huge fan of their souvlaki and calamari and the roast lamb and that veggie stew that comes with the lamb. Potatoes are something special. Awesome Tzatziki. We have always had great service from very busy waiters - yes things are hectic, but I have never felt neglected. And the price and the quantitiy of the food make the wait well worth it.

I just don't get it!!

I agree with the other reviews. I just don’t understand what’s so freaking special about this place that people line up for hours to get in. Is it the mob mentality at work? Maybe they are ALL tourists, sent by the various hotels around town? Or perhaps they are just too lazy to think for themselves. How can such an ordinary place be so packed all the time? Even the waitress are not hot.

The food is fair to ok, even though my friend found a LONG BLACK hair with some fried calamari around it. But I am not complaining about that; in fact I love when the chef puts himself into his dish.

Despite of what you might have heard, the portions are NOT that huge, they are normal size for a Greek restaurant. So do yourself a favour, and don’t believe the hype. Hell, I don’t even wait in lines for clubs, so I don’t see why I should wait in line for a mediocre food joint, considering there are SO MANY OTHER places to go in the downtown core. But that’s just my opinion.

This is a very Mediocre place

I ordered take out a couple times and also dined in 3 times past 5 years or so. Doesn't seem to have changed much, food is ok and the price is good. But then again a Mustang is cheap compared to a Porsche for a reason... not sure how good the quality of meats are or if the vegetables are ridden with pesticides from USA.

Service can be decent to poor. Side dips are outrageously overpriced, yes you have to pay for them. Greek salad sides are also too expensive for the poor vegetables and don't ask for a side greek salad with out the rice with your meal... they charge more... silly.

WASHROOMS ARE TERRIBLE, like a third world country.

i think that the fact that this place is really cheap catches atention from everyone but the real thing is that its not really good, the food it's not fresh, it has a weird taste and it is definitely not worth it, i end up spending money in something i really didn't like and had to go it somewhere else so, its a no here.

Stephos' Return to Form: Great once again!
By Sabzevarian of Vancouver (31 Reviews)

Stephos used to be one of our favourite places to go for lunch or take-out, but it went though a rough period for a few years. I tried it again recently a few times and I am very happy with it.

First of all, go for lunch rather than dinner if you can. There is a lot more room at lunch and service is faster - unless you like waiting in lines for dinner (and for the upcoming summer, dinner means any time after 3pm on weekends). Second, you will probably be taking home leftovers. If you are taking the bus home or have a long commute coming, you may want to ask for a second bag or bring your own bag. If the brown bag they have gets shaken around, the grease tends to leak, weakening the bag.... I have had take-out many times and have had this experience with their bags a few times...

Their chicken souvlaki is probably the best out of the meats. The roast lamb is hit and miss - plentiful but obviously not as good as a more expensive restaurant . Kalamari is still a solid, plate filled dish. There are a lot of other great options on the menu and pretty much everything comes in large portions.

Stephos remains a good place for cheap and filling Greek food. The prices have not gone up in the past decade!

Don't get it.

I am really, really trying to figure out why people line up here - it must be the value because it certainly isn't the food or ambiance.

Food
It was pretty OK. It was basically OPA but a the potatoes weren't dripping grease and the pita was good.

Service
Our server seemed nice enough, but not the brightest girl. We both ordered lamb souvlaki and for some reason she thought we wanted to share one order. REALLY?! Did you honestly think we wanted to share one plate of food between us? Do I look that broke? Maybe I need to shave or something. To be fair to her, she did bring out the second order rather promptly (e.g. 10 mins).

Value
As mentioned above, it tasted better than OPA for literally the same price. As a result, I'd have to say value is outstanding.

Ambiance
Old. Maybe you have to be trendy to find 80's furniture cool, but I'd rather go somewhere slightly more updated.

Would I return? probably not. Would I line-up? not if it was free.

A long-time fan of Stepho's!
By coconutfan of Vancouver (31 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, July 4, 2009 - 7:01pm [Dine in]

I have been a long-time customer of Stepho's. Two weeks ago, I went with a group of 7 for a special occasion. There was a lineup as we went during dinner time. However, we had people volunteering to line up ahead of time so we all didn't have to be there at the same time.

I ordered one of my favorites - the lamb slouvaki. My other favorites include the calamari dinner and the spanakopita dinner (not on the menu but you can order it). I also had a cosmo to go along with my meal, which was pleasant.

The waiter was funny and charming. We really had a great time there and the food came out at the same time for all of us. Overall, it was a good dinner experience as always!

Only a complete sucker would wait in line for such mediocre food and terrible service. I previously wrote a review for stepho's which was a little mixed, but after having a few more COMPLETELY horrible experiences I think I need to take back my previous statement. It seems like they have changed up the service staff at Stepho's - big mistake. The new servers at the restaurant are so unprofessional that it simply blows my mind that people are willing to put up with it. I have seen numerous people getting up from their tables to get pitchers of water to fill up their glasses because there weren't any servers in sight. Cold dishes, undercooked food, wrong orders, incompetent staff, and dirty cutlery. How many things can you turn a blind eye to? I am now done with stepho's, you shouldn't have to compromise so much when paying for a meal.

Ups and downs

Submitted Sunday, May 26, 2013 - 1:05am [Dine in]

I have been going to stepho's for almost 8 years at least once every 2/3 weeks. The food is really good, but there have been times where things were a little off (rice/potatoes/carrots being a little undercooked). It's not the cleanest place, but it's not anything offensive. I have noticed the restaurant goes through periods where it's amazing, simply top notch, but there's also periods where you leave a little disappointed - but I do believe that's because of the expectations you make from having previous amazing meals.
Overall, a great casual Greek restaurant in Vancouver. Have been going there for year, and will continue to do so as as far as I can see.

Not so good

Popped in with a friend for a quick bite, mid afternoon, Calamari and Fried Greek Cheese, and Pita bread. We were seated next to the kitchen/bathroom in an area that was constant traffic area. When the waitress did take our order, we were shocked to hear the kitchen staff only feet away, arguing and raised voices. Whe our Saganaki did arrive it was luke warm and already rubbery. The piece of cheese itself was very small portion. We finished the cheeses before our Calamari arrived and that was a major letdown as the squid was mostly bit ends, all crunch little meat. It was also a sad small portion that was not at all what I had expected. Sadly, the waitress didnt ask or enquire if we enjoyed anything, she dropped the plates on the table and was off. Our waters were refilled by the busser, who also noted the lackj of care. We had just figured a quick snack would tide us over til dinner, but on the way home we had to stop on Fraser St. to buy samosas and aloo tiki. I would not come here if you care about taste or service. It has gone downhill for some time. I would rather pay more and have staff available that are gracious and not rushing around like chickens with heads cut off. Another old fave bites the dust for us.

worst Greek food ever

This is the worst Greek food I ever had. Had calamari, saganaki and greek salad and all except for half of the saganaki ended up in trash. The food in this place is an insult to Greek cuisine. Greek food should be flavorful but Stepho's calamari is rubbery, Greek salad is simply sour and saganaki tastes like cheep mozzarella melted in canola oil....zero flavor. Did not try other dishes and are not planning to. I will definitely not go back and would not recommend it to anyone. I really don't understand were the good reviews are coming from.

Wouldn't Go Back
By Chanishe1 of Calgary (1 Review)
Submitted Sunday, May 20, 2012 - 7:25pm [Dine in]

Absolutely amazing food. I had the spanakopita which was outstanding and I had the chicken pita dish with fries. Everyone i dined with was impressed with the food. We are from calgary and a local recommended the food here. However, the service was lacking. The tall bald gentlemen with round glasses was continually rude to the table. When I was talking to him he looked at me blankly and rudely asked who I was talking to. He forgot some of our drinks, brought out a dirty wine glass and threw out our left overs when we asked them to pack them up. Worst of all, when I made a comment to the manager about our experience, our waiter came back to the table and made a confrontation in front of my guests. He asked what he did that was so horrible that we had to go to his boss and complain. When we tried to explain our problem he got defensive and yelled at my sister. I suggested we pay and leave, but my guests were slightly upset. They had loved the food and was looking forward to our left overs. They talked to the manager again and he gave them a free meal the next time we come, but from this experience, I would hardly think I should come back. The manager was great and apologetic, but the server was very unprofessional when we criticized his work. I would have liked to see a better resolution to the issues we had brought up. Thank you for a great dinner, but our experience was ruined.

I have been getting take out from here for years. The quality remains consistently good, and you know exactly what you are getting with no surprises and no skimping of portions. The prices are very reasonable. It is very good value for your money. The staff are very friendly and efficient as well, although they are extremely busy!
Why stand in line when you can phone ahead and get take out?

Of course there are better Greek restaurants in the city, Mad Greek in Richmond comes to mind, but the value is good here and the food is not bad at all. I prefer takeout rather than eating in. The takeout portions seem larger and the ambience of the restaurant is nothing special. Service seemed a bit slow and unattentive.

Manager is an absolute joke. Disgustingly rude.

I always take out-of-towners to this place. It's a good value for a respectable flavour. I went in today (Dec 6th) around lunch time. The restaurant was not even half full. I asked the hostess if we can be seated at a table where I saw people already seating. She gave some BS reason about "No. We're trying to clear out that area." Whatever. We were guided to a dark area and the table was wobbly. Literally after 2min, I see another group coming in, and she freaking point to the table I was pointing at before. After 5 minutes, nobody even shows up at our table for the first time. Not even a glass of water or a menu. I walked up to the counter and asked if I can talk to the manager.
A guy who's making drinks tells me, "Talk to me." Without even looking at me. I tell him what happened and he says, "I don't know, maybe they were too busy then." I tell him literally it was 2 minutes ago. (Plus the restaurant is half empty. Is he dumb or does he think I am?) And then he tells me, "Look, I don't want to argue, what is the problem with your table anyways?" All this time, he doesn't even look at me once.

I had to explain myself by saying I'm not trying to cause any commotion.
But seriously, this guy is the manager? Isn't the managers suppose to be professionals who actually care about the customers when their employees are rude? He should not be working as a manager or in a restaurant at all. What a joke. I've been going to Stephos for few years now, quite frequently, and never been treated like this.
I don't know what you're doing but Stephos, you need to be better at hiring people.
That hostess and the manager is a reflection of your absolute lack of awareness as far as customer service goes.

Have to agree with many of the reviewers here there is just little value at Stepho's
After waiting in line for nearly 20 minutes which wasn't a huge deal, one couldn't but notice tons of empty seating in the restaurant. They obviously do a fair amount of business so there is no excuse to be understaffed.
As far as the food I found it to be simply mediocre. I had the Roast Lamb which was very typical and nothing to write home about. The calamari was slightly dry and lacking in flavour.
So many more choices for Greek food in the mainland that I won't be putting up with such poor customer service to eat mediocre food here.
