Casual greek food at cheap prices. Always a line up down the block. Nothing on the menu over $12.
The service is pretty bad. Snooty at times, so I decided to take my business elsewhere. Bad mistake. I never thought that Stepho's potatoes and rice was anything special until I had absolutely horrible ones.
Having said that, the only dishes I like at Stepho's is Dalmathes to start and roast lamb for main. However, just the 2 dishes kept me coming back. The lamb is tender and succulent. The meat falls right off the bones. Simply well done. One tip for everyone who don't want to wait: take the food to go and eat at the beach 5 blocks down.
Stephos used to be one of our favourite places to go for lunch or take-out, but it went though a rough period for a few years. I tried it again recently a few times and I am very happy with it.
First of all, go for lunch rather than dinner if you can. There is a lot more room at lunch and service is faster - unless you like waiting in lines for dinner (and for the upcoming summer, dinner means any time after 3pm on weekends). Second, you will probably be taking home leftovers. If you are taking the bus home or have a long commute coming, you may want to ask for a second bag or bring your own bag. If the brown bag they have gets shaken around, the grease tends to leak, weakening the bag.... I have had take-out many times and have had this experience with their bags a few times...
Their chicken souvlaki is probably the best out of the meats. The roast lamb is hit and miss - plentiful but obviously not as good as a more expensive restaurant . Kalamari is still a solid, plate filled dish. There are a lot of other great options on the menu and pretty much everything comes in large portions.
Stephos remains a good place for cheap and filling Greek food. The prices have not gone up in the past decade!
My favorite thing on the menu is the lamb souvlaki. It's very lean meat and a large portion of meat, the large portion of rice like you get elsewhere. Wife like the roast lamb. She likes it because the top is crisped. Food was ok but quantity was quite a lot. I was there at lunch.. busy as usual. I enjoyed it Worth it to try if you like garlic.
I've been to this place numerous times with friends and families for many, many years and to be honest the food is pretty good, you get a large portion for a decent price. I do understand,as they are really busy with long line-ups, that they need to enforce the everyone-is-here-before-we-can-seat-you policy, I really do understand that! But twice, I've ventured out to this restaurant with my own family, young children in tow, leaving with quite a bitter taste in my mouth...fuming to be exact and vow to never come back again!
The hostess was outrageously rude, and she did specify that she was told to do this under management. The amount of people waiting for a table was building up in the restaurant so she told everyone to go outside and start forming a line. Fair enough! But all I did was ask if I could stay with my two young children inside as it was starting to rain that afternoon, not even disturbing the other seated customers and not even close to their tables, and this was their waiting area at the front entrance. Yet, she told me I should take my kids to the car and wait instead! WOW...I don't think I have ever come across such treatment from a restaurant...so I left for another restaurant. I didn't need to be a paying customer and be treated like that. The second time I went was already with hesitation because of that incident and certainly it was the same hostess and that poor customer service shone right through once again. There was only five tables occupied in the entire whole restaurant! My husband dropped me and my children off to get a table first and he went to find parking, and this is in the downtown area. Yet the same hostess greeted us, yet again with her poor customer service skill, extremely, extremely rude, and told us she couldn't seat us until everyone was there and told me to call my husband! That was it, I will never be subjected to such degradation and have to pay money for it. Management needs to retrain their hostesses (or it could just be this one bad apple) but the attitude needs to go!
A friend recommended this. The place aims to be a regular family taverna... and that it does well. the prices and food are great. I had the calamari, which was just ok, but good portions and price so no complaints. The lamb was fantastic. I know the dish as kleftiko, but they simply call it roast lamb. It is excellent... other reviewer have pointed out that it is a bit fatty.. I did not think so. It tasted like a very good, slow cooked lamb shank should taste. And at around 10 dollars it is great value, And comes with equally good tasting carrots, salad, potatoes. We had leftovers and I plan to be back!
We went to Stephos because my best friends always raved about how good the food was. There is always a line up ..so it must be fantastic....right...??!
We arrived early to avoid line up and were seated immediately. It looked promising. After taking our drink order the server seemed to forget that we were there. When she finally brought our beers we ordered appies. So, we waited for 30 min for Saganaki (the flaming cheese). When it did arrive it was horrible, it was burnt and cold. However,to quote our server "Thats how it comes." I wonder if she would use the same excuse for our burnt pita bread?
Meanwhile every other table that was seated after us received their appetizers AND entree while we continued to wait. At least we were seated at a window, we had the sights of davie street to occupy us :)
When the entrees did finally arrive we had been in the restaurant for at least an hour. We were starving. The souvlaki platters were stone cold and on dirty plates no less. Seeing as how our server was less than attentive we ate anyway.
And still our server was nowhere to be seen. Half an hour later with half eaten plates and empty glasses sitting in front of us we had to go to the front to get our bill.
We paid and gladly left. Never to return
We both spent that night and most of the next morning fighting over the bathroom
The food itself was alright, but if your looking for value, then check it out. The only con is the time you have to wait just to get a table, and the lamb could have a little more taste. I love greek food, and their are only a couple places I enjoy; this being one.
I have been a long-time customer of Stepho's. Two weeks ago, I went with a group of 7 for a special occasion. There was a lineup as we went during dinner time. However, we had people volunteering to line up ahead of time so we all didn't have to be there at the same time.
I ordered one of my favorites - the lamb slouvaki. My other favorites include the calamari dinner and the spanakopita dinner (not on the menu but you can order it). I also had a cosmo to go along with my meal, which was pleasant.
The waiter was funny and charming. We really had a great time there and the food came out at the same time for all of us. Overall, it was a good dinner experience as always!
My boyfriend and I went for a late lunch a couple weeks ago.
We were seated right away. The place wasn't packed like it usually is.
We ordered some appy's, they took over 30 minutes to arrive. I could not understand how the tables who were seated after us were receiving their mains before we were eating our appetizers!
From the time we were seated to the time we got out main dishes, it was 55 minutes. The server clearly forgot about our order, and tried avoiding us. We finally waved her over and she blamed the kitchen for being backed up.
The food finally arrived, it was hot and not any better than usual.
I will not be back. Can't see this place staying open much longer.
Sorry guys.... I just don't get it. The wait is WAY too long for food that I think is "decent".
It's over rated and I think partially because of Stepho's location. The fact that he throws a handful of fries on the plate is (I think) deplorable. I think Stepho's appeals to the young hip crowd that hangs around the west side of the city. If You want authentic, great tasting, everything on the menu is perfect food. Try Kalamata's you won't be disappointed. I highly recommend making reservations. I tried Stepho's once (only because we were in the neighborhood) and really didn't like it at all, have not been back since and will only go to Kalamata's. I don't have to wait in the rain, I don't get served fast food and I walk out of there happy very satisfied and usually so full that there is enough to take home for a midnight snack.
Honestly people..... Stepho's is not everything it's cracked out to be.... please.. try Kalamata's.
We arrived at 6:45PM on a Saturday and found the wait to be of a reasonable duration i.e. 10-12 mins. However arrive after 7PM and you're in for a long wait, esp. if you've got a party of friends. Waitresses/waiters came to take our order witin 5 mins of being seated which was good, because we knew what we wanted from the menu displayed in the window whilst we were waiting in line. A tasty Dip/Pita appetiser arrived almost immediately, and the main course (chicken pita and lamb souvlaki) was almost instantaneous. We like a quick n easy meal, but I'm sure others like to take their time dining. Service was average to good. Not brilliant, but I could see it's because it was extremely busy. I would definitely return.
It has been a while since I have dined at Stepho's, probably close to two years now. But when ever I drive by the restaurant, I can't help but think about there tender juicy lamb; just barley hanging on to the bone. The price is incredible for it's taste and portion. My friend who never eats lamb was even extremely tempted to give it a taste. The line ups are just ridiculously long, I think the owner should really expand or open another location as this join is way too small for such a crowded part of town. During the summer on a nice warm day with some friends I wouldn't mind waiting over half an hour outside but we only see a limited number of those days here in Vancouver. Note, they do have lamp heaters outside for those who are waiting.
The lineups are too long to wait for the kind of food they serve. The food is fresh and cooked well, but not really worth the wait. Some of the side dishes which come with the entree's are not too good, but makes the plate of food look bigger. Service is friendly, our waiter gave us free dip and pita after we ordered because he could see we looked really hungry and tired. Amazing value for Greek food.
This place is not as good as it was five or 8 years ago.. but that may because they haven't raised their prices since then...
The only thing I would order is the roast lamb or the vegetarian lasagna... the wine is never very good - and the calamari is too dry... Despite the big portions and tasty lamb/lasagna dish, I think I would rather go to Taki's...But for the price, you won't feel disappointed or ripped off :-)
MY MOTTO FOR THE RESTAURANT: If you want to pay cheap and each cheap food( $10 instead of $14 for a Calamari dinner), by all means go to Stephos.
THE FOOD: Most people get excited by the large portions. Guess what? You will get a large heap of rice, which cost the restaurant 25c extra. Your plate will look very big as a result. I dine mostly at Greek restaurants, all over the Lower Mainland. I have never tasted such dry, hard to chew squid. The Greek salad had unripened tomatoes, and cucumber. I felt as though the veggies were plastic. No taste in them.
THE AMBIANCE: My eyes got tired very fast. The restaurant has dimmed lights so you cannot see that it needs to be renovated.
THE SERVICE: Nice, but if you stop ordering, they want you out and the waiter will keep bugging you if you want anything else, until yo ask for the bill.
We had reservations for a B-day party. Could not put the tables together, as it is very tight in there. Also half of the guests had to stand around the other guests' table and wait until a second reserved table was freed..for 20 minutes. When you make reservations, it does not mean you will have your table right away.
I would rather pay $3-4 extra per plate, and eat at another Greek restaurant. This was a bit like a fast food experience. Nothing hip about this place at all.
Stepho's is a great restaurant to eat in, you definetly get your money's worth! The roast lamb is my absolute favourite! If you are planning on going, expect to wait in line for a long time, especially during the summer. At times it seems as if they are under staffed so service is not that great but the food is worth it!
the food is on and off depending on the day you go and the service has gone way down. I agree with a previous post that you should get take out. the portions are also shrinking and overall i have stopped going out of my way to eat here. I live in surrey but would drive out there to eat at stephos. now i find that the food is either just good or ok. I could never finish a full portion of the 2 skewer chicken souvlaki until my last few visits. All that being said the food is still worth getting but worth waiting for or going out of your way to get.
The calamari dinner is to die for, the portion size is amazing, I usually eat it for dinner and lunch the next day. In the calamari dinner you get so much calamari, so much rice, potatos, bread and tatziki, now the one thing you want to make sure you do is ask for extra tatzziki sauce!!!! I wouldn't wait in line at this place, either go when they not busy or do like me take the food home and eat in your pj's! Their sluvaki is also super good! And you can't beat thier prices!!! Sorry for any spelling errors :-)
Listen, I'm Greek. Many, many generations of Greek in me and when I went to this place I didn't see any of my ancestors at this restaurant.
The lamb was all sinew and gristle. The lasagna contained the ends of carrotts (the root end). I went with four employees from my firm and we all didn't want to finish our meals. The price was great, but you get a lot of big, wet rice for the price. If the meal contained actual content I'd say "well, at least you're getting good sized portions" but you don't. You get over-cooked rice, piled high with cheap cuts of meat thrown on top.
I don't know why people line up for this place, unless they're really on a budget and want the experience of "dining out" but for my money I'd prefer a place like Characters where at least you get food. Stepho's is not worth the price.
I'm really not sure what the allure of this place is. I could understand it 10 years ago when you got a whole plate of food for $5, but now I'm just baffled as to why people are willing to wait in the cold/rain for a long time for mediocre food.
I had one chicken souvlaki take out with pink juice running out of it (they forgot about it so they rushed it), and getting sicker than a rabid monkey the next time I went there (who knows if it was a virus or the food, but after the pink juice chicken, I'm not doubtful) I don't think I can stomach going back there.
If you want good Greek without the wait, the noise, and the harried meal as they try to rush you out the door, go to Kalamata on W. Broadway and Yukon. Probably cheaper than Stepho's now, too.
