Expensive for what you get

Went here for dinner with a group of friends. We had the 10 course dinner which had a preset menu, similar to a wedding menu. Most of the dishes were very good like the crab, roasted chicken, mushroom & gai lan, sweet & sour pork with deep fried tofu, fried rice, deep fried cod w/ sweet soy sauce etc. The service was great, they constantly was on top of topping off our pop/tea. My gripe was with some of the dishes. One of our tables they completely forgot to serve the roasted chicken and the fried rice was without shrimps or bar-b-q- pork, they really cheaped out on this dish. For the price we paid I felt that the value was not there. I have eaten at other restaurants that not only had better quality of food, lager dishes but the price was much more reasonable than here. I would rather go somewhere else for the same dishes. Needless to say, I would not be returning anytime soon.

I came here once only for dim sum with a large group of friends and I don't plan on ever coming back.

Nothing terrible and nothing certainly outstanding but considering their prices I would've preferred more consistency among all dim sum items. Dishes are indeed tasty but a few of what I thought were high turnover items came out lukewarm to touch. Waste really. The deep fried spring rolls are especially oily - need more wok heat.

This is a larger restaurant so I figured service would be up to par. Not so. We came close to the end of their lunch food service but still had to constantly wave servers down to come over. Slow to refill teapots. They seemed more interested in setting up for dinner service.

Place looks tired, like a lot of other restaurants of similar size. Htey only left the lights on in and our surrounding area.

If they wanted us to leave they shouldn't have served us.

Average Dim Sum

Kitty corner to Oakridge Mall the restaurant is conveniently located and offers decent off-street parking. Went with a group of colleagues for dim sum and ordered the usual suspects: har gow, spring rolls, spicy wontons, pork buns, sui mai, etc. We actually over ordered so had plenty of leftovers to take home. Food wise, I find the quality solid if not uninteresting. Honestly, cannot distinguish their quality from a lower end dim sum restaurant. Portion size is adequate and freshly steamed. Items are ordered off a card system so I can't see how the food cannot come piping hot. Service was adequate as well; tea served and refilled, empties taken away, bill arrived promptly. Two minor hiccups (in my view): the serving ladies were very abrupt with dropping off the food and seemed grouchy all morning. Secondly, when we asked for the food to be packed, they dropped off styrofoam boxes on our table, implying "do it yourself". Dining with my family, this is not considered an issue. Some of my caucasian colleagues, however, were quite taken back at this gesture and couldn't understand how that was considered service. Nevertheless, we tipped in the 15-20% range and perhaps the servers knew regardless how inadequate the service was, a group full of non-Chinese diners would tip more out of politeness. Pricing is similar to Red Star, Fisherman's Terrace and slightly slower than Kirin's. Value wise, it's not solid but I wasn't sticker shocked at anything. Probably would just steer the group to Red Star the next time we're in the mood for dim sum. Ambiance was a bit dated, but nevertheless clean and spacious. Overall the experience was ho-hum and not a place that I'll be rushing back to soon.

Very pleasant

First time we have been here, just over the road from Oakridge Canada Line station.

Greeting was very nice, they actually asked us what type of tea we wanted, we have never got that in a Vancouver restaurant before. So nice of them to ask us.

We were a little nervous being alone in the restaurant with no other customers but it filled up quickly.

The food came quickly, it was very good. I had sweet and sour fish and it was as equally nice as the best places I've had this in.

The staff were extremely polite and courteous to us, and this seemed to be the case for other people arriving. It looked as though they had a lot of regular customers as they knew some people coming through the door.

The restaurant looked pleasant enough inside, and clean as well. I found the shouting from the kitchen a little distracting. Also their phone was going off and could be heard throughout the restaruant.

Would I go back to this restaurant?
Yes, I am very likely to return.

In need of a renovation...

Getting old and the floors and furniture is there to show for it. In dire need of a renovation! Food is okay for dinner. Can't say for lunch as I've yet to try. Abalone was prepared alright, but nothing exceptional. Certainly didn't cry out for me to return. All in all, probably just mark this as average.

Spicy Court - Don't let the name Fool You - GREAT Dim Sum!

One of the few dim sum places in the GVRD with added finesse to its cooking outside of Richmond. In regards to variety, they pretty much have 20 or so regular Cantonese style dim sum plates...typical price ranges from 3.75 to 4.50. Very good quality stuff; big and plump har-gows with a not-too-thin outer skin ; meaty shu-mais; deep fried bean curds with shrimp fillings (YUM!); super huge soup dumpling in a medicinal chicken broth; a wide range of delicate congees to boot; and of course, your sichuan/shanghai specialty dim sum plates (i.e siu loong bau) that are hard to find anywhere else in town.

Dinner here is also a treat and never dissappoints - great crab and lobster dishes for sharing; and of course, a whole bunch of other dishes that are too long to list here.

Service is consistently efficient and courteous in this large restaurant. Decor has an understated Canto-elegance - white tablecloths; cleaniness is very good. A favorite for local Chinese retirees / semi-retirees during weekday mornings. However, don't let that deter you younger folks seeking for some great Dim-Sum.

For a busy restaurant the servers here must feel like they are better than you. After ordering more than $50 worth of dim sum between 3 people, our lunch was overpowered by the rudeness of our servers. We asked for iced tea and they gave us another pot of tea. LOL. When I told them we wanted Iced Tea he said I will give you Ice. LOL again. We gave up on the iced tea and wanted to pack our food since we ordered way too much. By ths time the polace wasnt busy and all they did was bring us 2 containers and a bag. We saw the server taking the plates of food from other tables and packing it for them, why would they not pack ours ? Definately not going back.

Solid Food Day or Night

I have been going to Spicy Court for years. This place has very tasty dim sum with the regular menu items all showing strong. Ha Gow and Siu Mai are the faves and they do not disappoint here. At this restaurant you order by card for dim sum and it is brought out to you...no doubt to be as efficient as possible and to be as fresh as possible. It does show throughout the quality of their dim sum.

As for dinner, I have tried several set menus as well as their other dinner menu items. Of note are the King Crab prepared steamed with garlic for the first course and with baked rice in shell for the second. The lobster with e-fu noodles and cream sauce is also nicely prepared as is the 2 course peking duck.

Overall this restaurant offers solid food at average pricing. The service is average to good depending on who is waiting your table. The ambiance is middle of the road as far as Chinese restaurants go but for the price comparing to supposed "high end" Chinese such as Kirin or Sun Sui Wah, why not save 20% off your bill and get as good or better food...recommended
