Friendly Little Place on Cambie
By applepie of Burnaby (120 Reviews)

Spices does not look like the typical Vietnamese restaurant. The decor is more modern and cozier, and the service is friendly and prompt. The menu has a lot of good selections, and a number of combination plates. We ordered a beef noodle soup and a combination that includes Vietnamese spring rolls, steamed crepe, a chicken brochette and fried rice. Except for the brochette which was slightly burnt, others were all pretty good. The noodle soup, too, was hot and tasty. Price was a little higher than the typical Vietnamese restaurant, but then, it's also nicer than the typical Vietnamese restaurant. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual meal.

Male waiter ruined the experience
By luckyduckluk of Vancouver (6 Reviews)

As a resident in Cambie Village, I like to support the nearby businesses. I find the food at Spices to be generally decent, except for their Vietnamese subs. On my last visit, I ordered a shredded pork vietnamese sub after craving it all day! To my surprise, there was no meat in there at all. I pointed this out to the male waiter that I think the pork might've been left out in the sandwich, and he grimaced and explained that it IS there *pointing at the stringy daikon* I then took the daikon out from the sub and told him this isn't pork. He then told me that I was thinking of the grilled pork sub, and this was a shredded pork sub. Pretty much fuming at this point at him avoiding the question, I decided it just wasn't worth it. Paid for the sandwich sans tips and left.

I liked the place, but not after that experience. Too bad. The female owner is really sweet.

Nice pho
By yummitummi of Vancouver (46 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, July 6, 2008 - 11:46pm [Dine in]

I'm always happy when new Vietnamese restaurants open up on the West side of Vancouver so I don't have to make the trek out to Kingsway or Richmond to get a bowl of pho.
Spices has very tasty pho, and it comes in a standard size that probably would be equal to "medium" at most other places. It's a little more expensive than, say, Pho Hoa, but you're also paying for the more pleasant ambiance. Combo meals were also tasty. My only complaint was that after eating the pho I felt really, really thirsty. But other than that it was quite good.
As I just mentioned, Spices has a nice room, with deep red walls and pretty overhead lamps, rather than the standard white walls and fluorescent lighting. The server was friendly and food came out very quickly.
Will return when I need that hot piping bowl of beef noodle soup :)

atypical vietnamese restaurant

discovered this place after i had brunch at the newly renovated stella's across the street.

popped in for dinner and i bravely had pho in this blazing july day.

i didn't have to add any extra flavouring to the broth because it was perfect as is. piping hot until the last spoonful.

taking a peek through the window, you'd never think this was a vietnamese restaurant, except for the write-ups on the window.

quiet ambiance and nice decor, except for the christmas ribbon wrapped around the lamps.

the menus are clean. some vietnamese restaurants you kinda wonder when the last time they've been wiped down.

i'd return for sure, because i need a break from the karoake vietnamese restaurants.

Amazing Pho

We were rushing to get to a movie, and only had a hlaf an hour, so were looking for someplace quick.

We saw Spices and decided Pho was a good option.

My wife ordered the rare beef pho and I ordered a spicy squid appetizer with a side of steam rice. I ordered this because it reminded me of one of my favourite dishes at a place in Toronto.

Our food came in short order. The spicy squid looked very close to what I was expecting, the taste was not quite the same but very tasty, perfectly cooked. It could have been a little more spicy but the flavours worked very well together, subtle but very good.

The Pho was amazing, probably one of the best tasting stocks I have had.

We were in and out within 30 minutes, and cost including tip under $20 for 2 people.

Greasy spring rolls
By incognito of downtown (32 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, February 10, 2009 - 1:09pm [Dine in]

I had the spring roll lunch special at $6.49 for two large spring rolls. It came with a bit of vermicelli and salad and dipping sauce. The vermicelli doesn't look like much but it was quite tasty. The rolls had good flavour, with lots of pork in the filling but they were very greasy. The dipping sauce was good.

New Gem

This new Vietnamese restaurant is so good, that makes me sign up to write them my first review, even I am a regular visitor to dinehere.ca Me and my friend found this place by the tasty smell of them from the parking lot of it's neighbour restaurant- Glouster. We're like it smells so good that attracts our attention to give them a shot. The menu offers variety of dishes to choose from, such as the typical Pho noodles (avg $6.50), salad roll and spring rolls, to main dishes. Me and my friends had Basil Chicken with rice ($12), which serves like a stew with a little spice in it, very nicely done. Also had a Combo C ($12), which comes with Shrimp paste on sugar cane, skewer of beef and salad & spring roll, it comes with rice/fried rice/vermicilli interchangeable. They have Combo A-K, which include vegetarian combo. Do not miss their lemon grass chicken wings. The steam burst out after you have 1 bite of it. Staff are friendly, decor is comfortable. Will make it to my return visit list

Spices - not spicey or tasty
By vancouvertasty of South Main, Vancouver (11 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, February 10, 2009 - 1:26pm [Dine in]

We went for a quick lunch on New Years Eve. I had the Lemongrass Chicken with rice and he had the Lemongrass Pork.

Neither of us could taste the lemongrass in either dish, both the chicken and the pork were saturated with oil. Rice was plain white rice, dipping sauce was decent.

We were both very sick after eating the food.

I had been to Spices once before and had had decent chicken with basil, but the price didn't match the quality or serving size.

I definitely will not be going back.

perfect little place to grab a bit after a movie
By clubcliff of yaletown vancouver (2 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, January 3, 2010 - 10:10pm [Dine in]

for pho i had the beef and ox flank with a side of premium meat - the premium meat was a nice touch of marbled beef, the pho was authentic and not confused by too many of the bits youd expect from pho 99 or something. the shrimp on a sugarcane skewer was a nice item you wouldnt expect and the spring rolls were nice n oily, served piping hot and fresh made in house
the only complaint if any was that the male server wasnt very attentive or polite, often replying with one word and generally not caring about the customers. the women (proprietor) i should say is completely and utterly nice and polite
overall, i would definitely recommend this place because everything is made in house and its a quick, cheap date place

Maybe it was an off night, but I dont think so

Intended to visit the new Shanghainese restaurant a couple blocks down the street, but due to lack of reservations and an indefinite wait time we decided to try again another time, on the way back to the car we noticed SPICES, with its colourful interior and more importantly an open table for 2, I'm a big fan of pho, especially on a cold night and when I'm hungry. The prices were a $1 to $3 more than most pho places but justifiable as they are in the pricier westside and it is a nice looking establishment. To we ordered the chicken wing starter, a house special pho, and a beef ball pho. I dont expect phnom penh wings because that would be asking for something extraodinary, but something tasty and crispy would be nice. What arrived was 7 refried and dry MID JOINT wing peices for what I believe was $6.95!! I laughed when she placed the plate on our table. But then maybe the pho will be different. My house pho came, and it had a lot of noodles.. good, the soup was bland.. bad, the soup was not hot enough to cook my rare beef or onions well, nor the sprouts and basil leaves I had to ask for. The beef ball pho was even more bland than mine as I had to have some of my dates dish as she did not want to eat anymore of it. She is not usually one to use hot sauce on her food, but that night she did. The plus side is that the meat they served was leaner than most other pho places and the restaurant seemed very clean.
They are probably not catering to the regular pho eating clientel, but I will definetely not be returning, and head east a few blocks for a bowl the good stuff.

Good place for pho

I've only tried the pho and springs rolls, which were both good. Their prices are slightly higher than the typical Vietnamese restaurant, but the quality of the food, the service and the ambiance make up for it. The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated for a Vietnamese restaurant. I go there often and will keep going.

Best Ambiance for a Vietnamese Restaurant!
By Tommy2010 of Cambie (7 Reviews)

I've been going to Vietnamese restaurants for over 2 decades in Vancouver. Most of the ones I go to have Christmas lights blinking all year round and TVs blairing. (Yes, I know - I go to a lot of cheap places).

Spices is probably the only Vietnamese restaurant that I have been to that has incredible, non-traditional decore. The food is very good. I seem to always order the special beef noodle soup and it has never disappointed me.

The service is sporatic but solid.

They don’t seem to have any ~$9 lunch specials so when ever I eat her I usually split an order with one of my co-workers.

The prices are reasonable, the food is above average, the atmosphere looks pretty good but I have always ordered take out and never eaten there.

Its good but I won’t go too far out of my way to eat here.

Love their Pho & Curry Sandwiches

Been there lots of times w/ the family. From their lunch specials, I've ordered the curry chicken sandwich numerous times. The curry chicken comes in a bowl separately from the yummy crunchy-crusted bread -- very filling. The broth for the pho is really good, no msg detected. Their spring rolls and hot & sour soup are very good too.

A nice Pho spot

Can a pho restaurant ever rate as outstanding?

ased on a recommendation went to Spices again for Pho. The food was good with a tasty broth, added the premium meat to make it better. Pho is a real good deal, but it all tastes pretty good to me, I have not been able to tell the difference between good and pretty good pho.
I can tell the difference between the ones with stinky tables and cockroaches and the ones that do not have cockroaches and stinky tables. Spices has the nicest interior for a Pho spot and good service and non stinky tables.

One of the best pho places in Vancouver

Have been to Spices a number of times now and have been impressed with the food. It's hard to find a Vietnammese restaurant that is consistently good overall and has a good atmosphere. Have ordered their lemon grass chicken and spring rolls, shrimp rolls and pho . . . and all have been great! Would definitely go back. Their prices are higher than most Vietnammese restaurants but the atmosphere and food quality are worth it.

I have eaten at this restaurant a few times believing that it was worth it because it was in the neighboubourhood that I lived in but it definitely isn't.
I have been treated poorly when I've eaten in the restaurant and ordered out that I would rather eat somewhere else. The food isn't worth it; there are restaurants out there that are just as good or better. No one deserves to deal with the BAD service from this restaurant just because of the location..... please think before you decide to try it out. There are many better places out there where you will be treated with decency.
