Breezy and informal as its namesake, this L-shaped room features a small patio in front, padded booths inside, an eclectic mix of Top 40 hits, and a menu of reasonably priced drinks and casual bites. It’s sandwiched between theatre row and a smattering of nightclubs, so if the TV monitors aren’t playing anything that catches your eye, the nightly street show of drunken clubbers will.
Mandatory 15% gratuity for all bills.
I came here about a week ago - the hostess was checking ID at the door like a bouncer. This is a first for me. I got to try some appies and will probably return to try some other food items. They also had some interesting cocktails. The grape knee-high(?) was tasty, however the muff-driver was reported to be weirdly gross - whip cream with minty watermelon??
Yam fries were nice a crispy and came with a good curry-type dip.
I wasn't overly crowded in there, but add a few large groups and it was really hard to hear your table's conversations.
They offered free cheesy calendars for the taking - don't know if that's a good thing or bad.
We were there on a busy UFC night. After paying a $10 cover charge, we were seated at a nice booth. We ordered some yummy pizzas and not-so-good nachos. I recommend staying away from the cocktails; they're very watered down. The server was mostly pleasent but was around way too much and wiped our table down with some sort of stinky cleaner mid-meal.
As you know, this is a standard sports bar, i just want to share this story.
After enjoying a Canucks game with a large group of friends and paying a $700 bill, most people stood up to wander and socialise. The few ppl left at our table were asked to move to a smaller table, fair enough.
Two of our female friends, after moving, were then told that they needed to purchase another alcoholic drink or they would have to leave. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? I will remind the reader that we had paid a $700 bill 20mins earlier.
After poiting out that it was illegal to force ppl to drink more alcohol if they didnt want to, the waitress proceeded to start SCREAMING at out friends to get out. We politley asked to talk to the manager.
The 20-something manager came over and joined in with the waitress, for some reason SCREAMING at my friends to leave.
We were eventually escorted out, while we observed a group of ridiculously drunk fellas hurling glasses across the bar without so much as a second look from management. Apparently this is acceptable behaviour if you continue to purchase alcohol.
This was an extremely disappointing end to what was a fun night, and our group has not returned.
If you like being abused by waitresses, go to the Elbow Room, at least there you can have a laugh about it.
We decided to take a break from our usual visit to Gastown and headed to Granville street. I had been to Speakeasy before and thought it would be a decent place to grab some casual drinks and catch up with friends.
I've been regretting this decision ever since.
Every single staff member we came in contact with was extremely rude. The hostess, the bartender, and the servers made us feel rushed and unwelcome from the minute we arrived. I can honestly say it was the most inhospitable service I have ever received. We literally had servers walking by our table yelling at us to leave because they were closing. Then a group of servers was sitting across from our table cashing-out and speaking rudely about us. Never once were we politely asked to finish up our drinks and be on our way (which we would have been fine with). I've worked in a number of bars and restaurants, so normally I can sympathize with servers, but in this case I can honestly say that I will NEVER be back. Worst part of it all - there was an auto-gratuity on the bill and we were forced to reward them for their horrendous efforts.
Don't waste your time with this place. There are too many great spots in Vancouver and Speakeasy doesn't deserve your business.
Though my experience has been limited with Speakeasy on Granville is has not been pleasant. My first encounter was at 330pm of game 6 of the Stanley Cup playoffs (June 13, 2011). My first impression was of the frontline staff, a doorman and hostess, who were extremely unfriendly. I entered the bar to find my boyfriend and his friend at a table with other patrons and no extra stool for me. I was followed in by the hostess and rudely told to leave immediately before I even said hello to the people I had originally came to meet. I agreed that I would leave in a moment after I spoke with my boyfriend about other plans. She did not accept this answer and continued to curtly tell me to leave immediatley as I tried to speak. She then told me to hand over my cell phone, which was in my hand at the time, and she would wait for me outside. I obviously said no and that I would leave momentarily if she would let me speak to my boyfriend without interupting. I must have only been there for 5 minutes before briskly leaving the very unfriendly and rude establishment behind. I made a phone call the next morning and spoke with the owner who appologized many times and offered me a reservation for the following evening during game 7. I was told that I would need to be at my reservation for 2pm with my entire party - to which I agreed. These arrangements were made in the late morning. I received a phone call at 8:40pm from yet a second rude employee telling me my reservations were cancelled and that the owner has no idea how to run the restaurant. When I asked to speak with the owner or if he would be in the establishment in the morning I was told he would not be back until sometime next week. I think it was the same rude young owman I had encountered the day before and I also think by the tone of her voice and hesitation that she was lying. I do not suggest supporting an extamblishment like this that has such poor customer service. Especially when going out for food and drinks, with HST and tipping isn't cheap these days. Not to mention Vancouver has many great places to dine out with friendly professional staff. I don't expect a server to bend over backwards for me - but I also do not expect to be treated poorly and with such attitutde, especially for no good reason.
This place was one of the worst places we've ever been to. First, we waited at the door for a while and no one acknowledged us.( Even though the two bartenders were looking at us and the manager at the door was doing absolutely nothing) We then had to go up to the bartender and ask if we could get a table in which we were told to wait a minute. Might I add this place was completely empty, there were 10 people in there max. So finally after a while we were I.d’ed then given the option to sit at any table we wanted. We waited another 10minutes for the menu which then the waitress came and gave our menus to only return in another 17 minutes. That should've been a sign to leave right there but we figured if we were there already we might as well stay. Then we had to play another waiting game for the food. When the food came it was okay, nothing special. (I really don't think you can mess up bar food) All and all, the bartenders/waitresses were really rude and useless, the service was ABSOLUTELY horrible and the food was very mediocre.
watched a hockey game there tonight jan 20. the last thing i wanted to hear blasting out those speakers was the high pitched voices of the guys inhaling helium balloons off the a&w commercial, in fact every commercial was blasting and they didn't even bother to turn it down or switch to music like most places do but most people may not even notice. but this was noticeable! all i could hear people say around me when the commercials start was "loud"
the food was fine and they got lots of tvs... and then came the bill.
we ordered a salmon soft taco for 11.95.
the pricing was like this:
beef 9.95 / chicken 10.95 / salmon 11.95
the bill came to 9.95 for a soft taco plus 4.00 for a salmon addition
NO WHERE on the menu does it say 'add salmon for $4'. we asked the waitress, a dark skinned, shorter brunette working tonight about it and this is how it went:
she says "no one has ever noticed that" as if it's somewhat strange for someone to check their receipt!?
i say "but it doesn't say anything about $4 addition for salmon, only 11.95"
she says "ok if its that big of a deal to you just don't pay it"
the bill was 56.65 and gave her 56. i'm never going back to listen to commercials and a stuck up rude waitress again!
On Oct 30/2010 me and my husband went to Speakeasy pub around 7pm. We ordered 1 drink each, after that drink we ordered dinner for both of us and it was already 8:20pm. After that we had 2 drinks which we drank for half an hour. When my husband ordered his third drink the waitress came and said( she was very rude) that we have to move to the bar because there is lineup outside. We were sitting at a time with table with 4 chairs. We refused and told her that we just got the drinks and that we don't want to move. She said then she will bring us the bill. My husband told her that we just ordered this drink and when we finish this one we will order more drinks as we want to stay longer in this pub. Then she called the security guard and told us to leave. My husband asked to speak with the manager who was very rude and basically told us that the table we are sitting at is too big for us and that we have to move or that we have to leave. Then the security guard came again and told us to leave. My husband asked if we can finish our drinks and he just told us to leave. The waitress got us our bill and my husband said he didn't want to pay for the last 2 drinks as we don't have the time to drink them. She told us we have to pay. When we looked at the bill we saw 15% of gratuity added to the bill. We told her that the service was bad and that we don't want to pay for the gratuity of 15% because it was only 2 of us. The waitress started to swear at us and told us that we are ass.... and to have great f..... night. The security guard was smiling and told us on our way out"don't ever come again". We paid our bill in full even though we couldn't drink our drinks and we were treated like dogs and also we were worried that the security guard would beat us up. My advice is don't waste your money and time here. Terrible customer service, absolutely no respect for customers so we complained to better business bureau.
Every time we go there (and I don't know why we go back) we get the worst possible service. The waitresses are always rude, they don't care at all about the customers. All they are concerned with is getting their money and going home. They are cows who wont even look you in the eye when you are talking to them. You will be lucky if you even get served on a Friday or Saturday night. Guys always get first priority because the waitresses can get more money out of guys. The last time we went the service was so horrible we decided that we wouldn't leave a tip (we tip when we feel the server deserves it)... We gave the cash to the waitress and we waited, and waited, and waited... she kept walking by pretending she was too busy to stop and give us our change... well we kept waiting and then she finally said "oh do you need your change"... we said "yes please" and then we waited again... she expected us to just leave without the change so we sat for what seemed like forever, she came back and asked AGAIN "are you sure you need your change?" at that point we said to each other, "in this moment she is the same as a beggar on the street" HOW PATHETIC!!!! My partner had enough we just shook our heads and left... what a shame.
Please note the site is making me rate all the questions before going forward, I didn't eat there so the food rating doesn't count.
My friend and I decided to stop here for brunch/lunch.The restaurant was pretty dead, we sat near the front and I asked to see the lunch menu. The waitress gave it to me, but gave us a spiel about how the cook couldn't make breakfast and lunch simultaneously, so we would have to both order the breakfast or both order the lunch? I didn't really get it, I just wanted a salad, so the server said "I'll check with the chef."
The regular coffee - not your latte or cappucino is listed as $4! A bit ridiculous, but my friend shrugged it off and ordered one anyways with milk not cream. To which our waitress replied that they don't actually have milk, none of their dishes have milk. At that point, we just told her we'd eat elsewhere and left.
My wife and I have lived downtown for about 6 years. We recently moved to Coquiltam but came downtown today to find somewhere we could watch the Canada vs. USA hockey game.
We had to arrive a few hours early prior to the game. There were big line ups outside every bar you could name. Some of the staff here were very cold and really could not care less how they served you.
We started with calamari. When it arrived I was puzzled by the really dark colour. When I tasted it the calamari was greasy and tasted as if it had been around for a whole week.
Unphased, my wife ordered fish and chips and I got a buffalo burger. My burger was dry and tasted horrid. My wife's fish and chips were no better; greasy with a terrible taste.
We had to get in somewhere to watch the hockey game but we were so unfortunate to come across a place that has terrible food and service.
If your looking for a great spot to catch a game, ufc, have few drinks or dinner without having to wait in line or having long waitng list for tables then this is your spot. Good selection of food and drinks with friendly, kind service. I have been here on several occassion and always had good time. There is always ample seating with great views of the tvs.
Went on a Friday night with 6 friends. I'll sum it up in point form.
-2 pitchers of water: 1 ice cold, one luke warm
-One friend's food came 30 minutes after the rest of ours did. We had already finished before she started eating.
-Unapologetic and impolite waitress.
They don't really need to be polite/accomodating when they've got an automatic 15% tip.
First time review.
HAD to be done as the experience I had was appalling.
Living here in Vancouver 5 years and not a stranger to restaurants on Granville and have come to expect great AND not so great experiencing, but the speakeasy tops them all.
short and simple
We had to sit ourselves at a dirty table after standing in the doorway for quite some time. We than asked 2 waitresses to help us with service and menus to which one waitress replied "she's coming". My friend ordered a burger (which was cold, tasteless and overpriced) a $4 pepsi (wow, serious tourist price increase grab?) and an other lunch entree plate for myself. My food was cold, not what I ordered and when I addressed the waitress she replied "that doesn't come with your meal" which was incorrect as the item I wanted was written in plain sight. Not to mention the portion size was laughable.
she checked with the kitchen..... obviously they didn't bother to check what they were out of that day, which is frustrating as I would not have ordered my dish if I knew they never had what I wanted. She offered me some yam fries....again...not what I ordered.
We asked for the bill pretty promptly to which our waitress replied "there is a %15 gratuity added"
WOW...I obviously refused to pay the %15 grat. Parties of 8 or more? maybe. but to tip on top of overpriced cold food, bad service and general bad times was insulting. I asked to speak with the manager the waitress came back and automatically told us we didn't have to pay the %15. we left a tip anyways and than as we left the restaurant we got chased down the street by our waitress saying we underpaid her and owed $3....she replied "Oh...its you guys...sorry."
wow.....just speaking easy
dont eat here. it will leave a bad taste in your mouth.
As there is no section for the Speakeasy on Granville st I would like to submit something about the new location on Davie st.
We walked in on the holiday at mid day. We were not really greeted that warmly and told to sit where we wanted to. Everything went well at the begging but the problems started when we place out order. We waited for about 35 minutes for our salad and fries and my friend ordered a sandwich. Because we were only one of four tables in the whole place i thought our food would be quite quick. Boy i was wrong! So about 35 minutes later i went up to our waiter and asked when our food would be ready. We were given a very snotty response that our food was the next to come and that the chef was new and how embarrased they were. So we waited and waited. About 15 minutes after that I had finally had enough. It does not take 45 minutes to throw a ceasar salad toether and put some fries in the deepfryer. So we walked out. So as were leaving our server says that hes sorry and the next time we are in he would buy us a drink. I informed him that there would be no next time. Please if your reading this dont waste you time. Davie st needs better quality places not the dump that has taken up residence. After all that i have discovered that we were not an isolated incident. Everyone that i have spoken to that has been there has had similar experiences.
We just had a meal with some friends to watch the game at the speakeasy, and I was so appalled at all the dishes that were served that I joined this site. I ordered a $20 8 oz steak that was over cooked, and one of the lowest quality cuts of meat I have ever had in a restaurant in Vancouver anywhere. A pizza and a hawian chicken burger were also ordered and both were well below expectations for any pub or tapas bar i have ever been to . When I did mention that my steak was 'bloody terrible' the waitress shrugged in ambivalence and sauntered off. I can not honestly believe how bad the whole experience was.
It was a lazy afternoon, me and my husband who wanted to experience the last few days of fall before winter kicks in had a wonderful day. We were strolling down Granville strip and happened to spot this unique restaurant. We wanted brunch so we figured why not try speakeasy, we were thrilled as a server ushered us a seat. The place was wonderful, quiet and the server was very very polite, offering us coffee tea and other drinks to our liking, she was timid girl, we asked her name and said "Britney". Us being British we love our english breakfast tea, and they did have it, wonderful start for the day.
So we were browsing through the menu, and the menu wasn't very modern, the selection was boring, you see it everywhere. But then again, it is breakfast, how many ways of cooking can you do with eggs?. My husband ordered the speakeasy omelette. I ordered scrambled eggs with sausage.
The staff was very polite, and took our orders and left us be to enjoy our tea while we wait for our brunch. out of nowhere we hear yelling in the kitchen, asking "why is there *swear word* breakfast order, stupid server mur mur mur mur" That was all we distinctively heard. We were pretty close to the kitchen window as it seems its semi-open kitchen, and the chef was a little fragile and old bald looking, and looks really angry, and a young man, a little chubby was trying his best to calm him down. I felt sorry for the young fella.
Anyways, 15 minutes later,(for breakfast order it was pretty long. how hard is it to cook an omelette? or scrambled egg.) our food came and it wasn't hot to our liking. My husband took a bite and to see his face as he spit it out, he told me there was egg shells in his omelette. And also I look at mine, the scrambled egg was very very dry and burnt. The underbelly of the egg was burnt and it did not have any salt and pepper or seasoning. The sausage that I had was burnt on the bottom, as if it was just left on the grill and not turned. We were very very disapointed. We asked our server if we can get a new one, she apologized and hurried back to the kitchen, where she asked the young fella to make new ones. And the ones we got was amazing it was cooked differently from what the older gentleman has cooked it, Omellete was nice and fluffy and the scrambled egg was actually scrambled. It was nice and wet and was seasoned. The sausage was nicely cooked too. Anyways my husband and I believe in second chance, we will definitely be back again, I just hope the younger fella will be the one to cook our breakfast. CHEERS!
I was pretty hungry as I walked up Granville St, and decided to try Speakeasy for a quick burger and beer. Service was slow but the staff were not impolite to me, this on a slow Sunday afternoon. I ordered the Canadian Burger and a glass of Stella Artois, the latter arriving promptly. The burger wasn't slow to arrive, but was rather ordinary, nothing wrong with that, but for $11.95 I would expect a bit better. If I recall correctly, I should have had a choice of salad or fries, I got fries, not choice. I may, however, have recalled the option of a choice incorrectly. The fries, btw, were cross-cut fries, a first for me, and I'm afraid that I can't say that they were special. When the bill came, it did not include a automatic tip and I left none as I figured paying $9.26, plus tax, for 500ml of draught beer was tip enough. There are so many restaurants in Vancouver that I don't think I'll be coming back.
Here is my warning to stay away from the Speakeasy on Granville street. The night we were there it wasn't busy and we still waited for ten minutes for someone to our table. Drinks were average but i thought expensive for what you get, 20$ for a pitcher of some no name speakeasy lager. I guess thats why it's called a dive bar. The food is what got me , where is the love ? Brutal natchos that you can't finish because they were dry , overcooked and hard.Bad bad pasta that has no taste. The service made me feel like they didn't care about the customer at all but rather they were just in it to take your money.
I went to the Speakeasy for lunch the other day and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. I had the Austrailian burger--a nice juicy lamb burger with feta cheese. I really enjoyed it! Very nice quality and and fresh tasting. The waitress was friendly and prompt. Casual pub style atmosphere, great burgers! I'll be back.
