Sophie's Cosmic Cafe is a family friendly restaurant in Kitsilano on west 4th near Arbutus. They have their own hot sauce and have an all day menu which includes breakfast.
I dined here with a few friends, and we came at a time where we knew the line would be minimal. A few minutes into our meal (approaching noon hour), a significant line already formed. The food is decent and the menu features some unique plates. I reccommend the Middle Eastern wheat meal. Perfect for oatmeal lovers!
Service is standard and the decor is the main attraction. A lovely place to chill out. A bit on the pricey side (10 dollars per meal).
The food here is pretty standard -- neither tasty, nor memorable. What was shocking was the price; while the dishes are a fair size, I still thought they were quite pricey. To top it all off, the staff can be unbelievably rude. I don't need a person to fawn all over me, but if I tell you there are insects in my salad, don't give me a dirty look and shrug and say, "Well, that's just more protein" and saunter off. I can't believe what passes for customer service in this city -- a simple smile and apology would have been more than enough, but giving me a condescedning sniff and walking away? And this is not the first time I've had this type of experience here. Blech.
I'm so lucky that I live close to this cool place. I've been here a few times and I've been most impressed with the meals I had for both lunch and dinner. A retro-looking restaurant which plays oldies music really sets you in the mood to have a good time. I've never tried their brunch, partly because the lineup is so long.
If you want something different and you're feeling kind of down, come here and I'd be really surprised if you leave disappointed and still feeling blue.
Only went here because a group of friends had decided to go and I was to meet them. Had to wait in line forever, but I expected that. Plus, I don't mind waiting for good food in a good restaurant. This however, was neither.
Service overall is SLOW. So slow. What really ticked me and my brother and sister off was how they brought out our milkshakes at the very end of the meal. Really, if the milkshakes are going to take that long, just say so when we order them.
Our burgers where overwhelmed with the taste of the onion powder in it, plus they were lukewarm. Oh, and I've had better milkshakes at White Spot.
All the food was terribly expensive and was sub-par in quality. I asked one of my friends why on earth anyone would want to eat there and she responed "Did you see all the cool stuff on the walls?"
We were sitting outside.
So after kicking and bitching about and against Sophie's Whatever Café, me and my girlfriend decided to give it another try. At last, the service was fast and nice. We didn't wait 15 minutes for coffee. Food still pretty bland, crowd still pretty wannabe trendy new parents with the little brand new shiny baby. I guess when you get to that point in life, Sophie's become what's defined as cool and exiting; "Wow you go to Sophie on a weekly basis, you must be hip to the groove". I don't have kids, and the food is bland, and the decoration is tasteless. If you're in need of exitement and change of your trivial boring life, try bolting any kind of metal crap that no Antique stores will take, hire a couple of kids and serve free range chicken, and maybe some Bethoven listening eggs and call it Bob's Cosmogonic Café, don't forget to open it in Kits!! it won't work in Saskatchewan
This little quirky place is great for breakfast at anytime of the day. The inside makes me laugh with their crazy design. Trust me it's worth a look. The service is nothing to write home about but hey it's a diner. The hashbrowns rock and I love their home made hot sauce. Great prices and gotta love a place that doesn't make everything out of a packet.
Felt like i had a pushy waitress who didnt seem to care, all the food was over priced. White spot/dennys offer better portion/quality/value for your dollar. There were also flies hovering above my head. This is probably the first and last time I will ever go to here. The props and wall decorations were nice though... That is probably the only good thing I can say about this place.
Walking into the cafe you are captivated by the neat assortment of quirky memorabilia but after receiving the order thats when reality sinks in.
To say im a little disappointed with the diner is an understatement, years ago the food served for breakfast was fresh, good sausages, etc. Not this time, the eggs in the menu 3 eggs, try two of them. I asked for scrambled i got dry fry chopped and greasy, the sausages were the cheapest frozen pork sausage and overcooked, the pancakes tasteless. It came quickly but id trade quick for quality anytime, cutting corners to maximize profit and overcharging at $12 with tx.
I speak with a fair amount of experience I was a cook for 15 years, this is a sure fire way for a past successful business to become unpopular, clients don't forget or forgive. I wont go back!
we went for breakfast on a friday morning. the food came up quickly, but it did sit on the counter for awhile before our server brought it to us.and the server forgot the buffer for the pancakes we had to remind her for several times.i wont go back until they improve the service.
We decided to check out this restaurant with the entertainment coupon. This is a family of four with two small children. Our two sons totally enjoyed the decor especially the trophies on display. I was impressed that they have a children menu. I ordered the mac/cheese and chicken strips for the kids and we ordered the steak and wild salmon. My husband requested the steak to be rare but it came medium. The server took it back but it came back pretty much medium rare and my salmon was a little dry. My son's mac/cheese was kind of bland but the chicken strips are decent. The only thing I really like was the green vegetable. After meal, we handed the entertainment coupon to the server and when she came back with our bill, she gave us a look that her tip is not going to be good. It not right to automatically judge people just because they use coupons that they are going to be cheap. Anyhow, I was not impress with her service however, I always follow the rules when using the entertainment coupons. I tipped her 15% on the original bill prior to the discount. After paying, I went to the washroom and I must say, their washroom is in pretty bad shape, the mirror is falling apart. The place is pretty run down considering the price of each entree is comparable to middle class restaurant. I will not go their again.
Do yourself a favor, order the perogies and merguez sausages off the dinner menu. What seems like a meal easily prepared at home turns into a beautiful comfort food restaurant experience. You won't be disappointed. Especially good on one of these rainy november nights ! I've been here for breakfast many times but like everyone else here I'd rather not wait in line for an hour just for a huge plate with 3 pounds of hash browns on it.
After seeing all the people waiting in line for breakfast whenever we pass, we decided to give Sophie's a try early Sunday morning. There was no wait, but as we were finishing eating (after 9 a.m.) the steady flow of people started filing in.
The freshly squeezed orange juice, unfortunately, tasted like it was just about to go off. Perhaps they served the first customers of the day the orange juice that had been sitting around the day before. I ordered steak and eggs and I was disappointed with the quality of the steak; it was thin and quite tough and dry, altho I liked what it was marinated in. The yolks of my eggs were pale and insipid. The potatoes seemed like dark "scrapings." (No nice chunks to get my teeth into.) My daughter's waffles with berries was OK; the berries weren't fresh, they were defrosted frozen. My Mom liked her ham & cheese omelet.
The server was very upbeat, efficient and nice. The decor was interesting to look at. I love those lunch boxes!
Next time, I'll spend my $50 + on something more satisfying...
I have to amit it is a pretty cool little spot, but I DO not think it is worth the line up. There are plenty of other places to go in the area that do not have line up on Sunday morning. Other than that though the food is good, the service is good, and the atmosphere is very cool.
I have to admit I like Sophie's Cosmic cafe, simply because anyhting that is not branded up the ying yang is getting to be a rarety these days.
The food was good, hot, fresh and plentiful, what more could I ask for? hmm, a bigger seat? But wait, no, that would mean a relocation to super branded megamall with ample space for all the luxuries we are supposed to be used to these days. So a rinky dink little booth will do.
Just don't go on the weekend and expect a seat in less than an hour, or a place to sit while you wait, or hide from the rain (just get your better half to stand at the door and wait for a table while you sit in the car and read the paper he/she can text you when a table is ready) other than that you'll love it. Its far out, kinda.
I went to Sophie's Cosmic Cafe for breakfast the other day and had french toast. It was perfection! Nice fluffy slices of tasty french toasty goodness served with a bowl of beautifully arranged fresh fruit (some of which was tropical which you never get in a fruite bowl). The service wasn't amazing but I've definitely had worse. I would defnitely return to this establishment.
. . is the most comprehensive breakfast grease fest. But not entirely a greasy spoon, the breakfasts are surprisingly light and fluffy yet genourous. Pancakes could use more eggs in the mix though.
I like the service there because it's down to earth and honest. Can't stand fakeness that early in the morning. You can avoid line-ups if you show up early before all the Kits hipsters wake up. Or invite friends and make them line-up while you show up fashionably late. Bring your out-of-towners. They'll love it. Especially if they're from Ontario.
I've been to Sophie's twice now; once for dinner and once for brunch. Why did I go? Urban legend. Friends told me about this 4th ave institution, so I felt I should go and give it a try. I have to say, I just don't get the allure of this place. The ambience is great if you like the 'junk yard/yard sale' look and if you like it very, very loud. It never struck me as clean and the bathrooms drive that point home in a big way.
What can I say about the food? Way, way overpriced for the quality, presentation and imagination. This is definitey cafe food alright, but priced at a better bistro's level - maybe to reflect the rents in the area? If it's just simple gut-filling food you want, why pay this price? Both meals I had were poorly prepared, had no real flavour to speak of and in one case, served a tad too cool for my liking.
The service was not very good either. This isn't a big place and there seemed to be enough waitresses on staff, so why the poor attention? If you're going to serve food like this, you better make up for it in service. Here's a little suggestion - smile at and be pleasant to the people who are going to tip you!
My final thought is to give this place a pass. You can do way better for the money elsewhere. I certainly won't be back.
So, went there for the first time this afternoon. My boyfriend had something off the breakfast menu and I ordered a burger. Food quality wasn't great. Value could have been better. The burger was extremely greasy, and the fries werent good and i LOVE fries! My boyfriends meal was equivilant to somehting from Dennys and there it would have liekly been cheaper! Soon after my boyfriend and I were very sick and had to go home and not continue on with our day! Dont think i'll be back any time soon! the lumpy Banana milk shake was good but over priced.
I have been going to Sophie's regularly (once every couple weeks or so) for the past few months, having recently discovered the place. I must say, I have been very happy with the service and food each and every time. In the morning or afternoon I usually will order the Santa Fe eggs benedict. It is a poached egg (actually poached in boiling water) over cornbread instead of the standard english muffin with guacamole, amongst other things. The home fries that the dish came with are delicious as well. The portions are usually so big, that I am rarely able to finish anything I order, which is a shame because I never want to stop eating what they serve up. The Wait staff are usually quite nice, although for some reason seem to be consistently slow at bringing the cheque at the end of the meal. The eclectic decor really makes for an interesting, fun, and unique atmosphere. All in all I highly recommend this spot to anyone with a big appetite for delicious food!
Not a bad joint to grab breakfast. Eggs are the big thing here and they do a pretty good job. Service is hit and miss. I've had good servers and mediocre ones. They get pretty busy at times. The atmosphere is an eclectic collection of items stuck every which way to the ceiling and wall, kind of fun. I'd recommend it for an informal breakfast anytime.
