I work very close from this restaurant. I used this restaurant for business lunch or dinner often. Food is great at this restaurant and I always thought this Chinese restaurant was the best in downtown until our co-worker had some very unpleasant experience the other day...
One of my co-worker from China loved this restaurant. They have regular menu, which our office staff all loved. Also, they have lunch special, take out only for only $5.25 (including tax). So my co-worker almost every day ordered take out menu (menu changes weekly). However, one day, he ordered a chowmen dish and turned out they used the kind he did not like at all. He opened it and saw the noodle, and told us "I do not like this noodle at all". Since he was a regular customer and possibly one of the best customer, we encouraged him that he go and ask for something different.
5 min later, he came back with the same dish. It was too bad the restaurant would not want to change, that is fine if it is their store policy.
However, we were all surprised what the manager of the restaurant told him.
She told "I don't mind if you don't come back anymore".
I was really disappointed.... I really liked the food in this restaurant but this manager forgot about the basis of the customer service. It is only $5.25, and possibly did not hurt them at all even if she exchanged the dish.
Since then, our office staff won't go to this restaurant at all. Too bad that they lost the customers and business, but if the manager would not mind if we do not go back, that is the way it is....
I have been going to the Snow Garden for lunch for over 10 years now. Generally you have to get there very close to 12:00 to get a table or be ready to stand in line. I go there myself for lunch often but also find it a great place to take clients (who seem to appreciate the change from the standard predictable downtown lunch places).
The Hot and Sour soup is fantasic as is the cashew chicken.
Snow Garden is the only restaurant I have been visiting since early 70s.
The media crew of 20 from Tokyo for the Vancouver Olympic appreciated Snow Garden as the best Chinese restaruant in Vancouver. They visited Snow Garden twice.
When we visit with six to ten people, we ask the restaurant to prepare their choice menu. Every time they surprise us with new foods which are not listed in the menu boook. I recommend you to do that. Tell them your budget only and wait.
I'd been curious about this place since i moved into the neighbourhood and i finally got to try it today... i wasnt impressed. There room is nice but the reason i only gave it a two was A) no music and it was empty so all we could hear were people angrily yelling in the kitchen B) Lighting was dark C) The dishes on the table were very very old. The other thing that botherd my was the pricing. Downtown restaurants are always more expensive because of rent and stuff but 15.50 for a small bowl of chili garlic pork ... get real. We also had the egg rolls and hot and sour soup (alll 1 order shared) All came to 31.50... The soup and pork that were supposed to be spicey but it seems they forgot to add the hot sauce in the back. The spring rolls werent bad but they came with 4 packages of plum sauce. Packages of plum sauce just dont go with a restaurant, They could have at least put them in a little bowl for dipping since they charged the amount of a higher scale chinese food place but give you packaged stuff. Our rice was not included with the entree and was hard in the middle (A sign of reheating old rice) The whole meal tasted like food court food and now im so thirsty it feels like i need a giant drink just to get the salty after tase out of my mouth, Im so sad... i really wanted to like this place, but now i see why its always empty
Terrible dining experience we were ignored and not greeted when we arrived. When we tried to ask our server to take our order we were ignored than coldly greeted. The prices were a little bit expensive and the taste was okay, but did not taste like your traditional Chinese food and more like a fast food Chinese restaurant. The decor of the restaurant is your a little bit better than your typical Chinese restaurant, but the washroom was dirty. I would not try this restaurant again.
I have been to this restaurant several times and my stomach has always left satisfied, full, and happy. I find the service staff very polite and helpful. Food service was prompt. I liked the ambiance of the place. Food was a little expensive but the portions were big and the food was very yummy so it was well worth the money. I would recommend this place to anyone who would like to have great Chinese food.
The first time I came into this restaurant with a bunch of my colleagues, this place was packed. I didn't even know this place existed. I heard many great things from my colleagues in regards to this place. So, I had high expectations! All I can say is that the food, service, value, ambiance rating is all personal. Comparing Chinese restaurants to Chinese restaurants, I would say that this place is way better than other Chinese restaurants. The portion of the food was pretty big, the value was not bad. I would say that it is a tad on the high end, but this is downtown. After lunch, I was expecting that my mouth would be dry, but amazingly it wasn't. Just a note to all, some of the downtown Chinese restaurants are higher priced than this restaurant which I have been too. I wonder if this place is as busy/packed during the evening hours?
