Um, hi can I get some service?

I have been here once before and wasn't too impressed, but decided to give it one more shot. What a mistake! After lining up for 15 minutes to get seated, we waited another 15 minutes before having a server take our drink order, and then waited...and waited.

Like other people have commented, the lone server is just not enough and she seems to pick and choose what tables to serve. After trying to get her attention to take our order, she went over to a table that had been seated *after* us and took their order. We walked out and went across the street to Caffe Barney where the service was outstanding and attentive.

The one time I was there the food was good, the decor is interesting, but I have no idea what people are lining up for?!

Great Brunch, So-so service

I'll admit that I'm a regular here. Brunch is my favourite meal, and their bennies are fabulous. The decor is also kooky and charming. However, like most people in this forum I'll have to agree: their service can be very, very slow. And yes, sometimes getting a coffee, or placing your order can be testing on your patience. Being in the food industry myself, I have absolutely no idea why there is only one main server, and the owner lady (who it seems takes only orders for her own section, or who doesn't take orders at all but will refill coffees). If you are dining here, make sure you have lots of time!

After all these years, you'd think that they'd hire an extra server for their chaotic weekends!

Service Anyone?

As a hospitality industry employee I have to review this place. On a good note the food is great and the humourous menu and décor is fun and lively. Unfortunately the service is hideous as I waited 20 minutes for a menu and then was never served. Left after the server decided taking other newer table orders or friends orders was more important. Not the first time this has happened as I have tried this place 4 times. Went across the street to Cafe Barney as I'm sure the server was still clearing our empty table while we ate.
Kudos to being the worst server on Earth.

Busy Sunday Brunch

This place has been in business for quite some time now. A classmate recommended this place so I decided to give this place a try. At 1ish on a Sunday, we lined up and waited for 15mins. This place was packed and there was only one server available, ouch.
On the menu, there were lots of choose from. There were the typical ham n eggs, bennys and other goodies. Their food looked better than it tasted. And it was quite pricey. French toast was almost $10.
As for atmosphere, it was very homey with lots of antique stuck all over the wall.

I wouldn't go again b/c I actually prefer Ihop.

Funky Brunch

I have always been an enormous breakfast fan, and the addition of Slickety Jim's several years back (triggering the birth of muiltiple Main Street breakfast joints, I might add) was a blessing in my books. The decor is unique- from the recycled bus-seats to the clutters of clutter, it reminds me of a combination kitchen-living room you might see in your collectomaniac grandma's house. sometimes your eye wanders too far and you think to yourself... what the f%$k?! ah yes, back to the food. the breakfast is phenomenal. original benedicts are bountiful here, and the sandwiches pack a mean punch as well. service can be slow, but its worth the wait. if you like brunch, check this one out.

Amazingly speedy service

Went to this restaurant for breakfast with a party of 6. From what I'd heard, I was expecting a long wait, but it really wasn't too bad - maybe 15 minutes.

The service was attentive and fast. The restaurant was so busy that they'd run out of water glasses, but we got our coffee and tea right away. I will also agree with monja (below) - the coffee was very good. We got refills on everything (water, coffee, tea) very promptly, and our two servers(!) were perfectly friendly and came to check up on us regularly.

I had an omelette with chorizo and mushrooms. Quality-wise, it was pretty standard. The portions of all of the dishes, however, were quite generous.

The ambiance of the restaurant is probably the big draw here. The busy, bustling atmosphere is not for everyone, but I can see why people enjoy being surrounded by it.

I would return, and probably will some day when I'm not with five other people.

The menu is fabulously inventive - they've got your staples, but also an enormous selection of other breakfast items for when you're in the mood for more than the typical variations. It's busy, but that's part of the ambiance. And given how packed the place was, I was impressed at how attentive and efficient the service was. Can't wait to go back!

Could be called Wait to Chew
By crash of Vancouver, BC (1 Review)

So... Late Sunday Morning. The majority of the rush is over. We get put on a waiting list. We wait. We get seated at the bar (though there are several other tables) and we wait. We finally get a menu. And we wait. We've now been sitting in front of the wait staff's noses for 30 minutes... waiting. We get told we can't order yet, it's not our turn. The orders are being taken in some secret order - in what I can only determine is determined by the time of day one arrived, multiplied by the number of times they have been to the restaurant, divided by the number of friends they have on staff, subtracted by the total number of regulars over newbies. The tables around us were being served first, though they were sat later. They were obviously friends of the staff. So... we wait.

Our time constraints meant we needed to have our brunch and be gone to meetings by 2:00. After 45 minutes, our order is taken. The couple seated at the bar beside us, their order is taken several minutes later. To be fair, they did not seem to need to wait as long. They came in much later than we did. The couple beside us have now got their meals. We wait.

We wait until we are so near 2:00 pm, and still no meal. Time to go. Starbucks for coffee and a pastry it is.

Did I mention we ordered SALADS???

Slickety Jim's seems to have a reputation (or is it a line up) far greater than it deserved. Neither myself, or my dining partner will return.

this place has gone downhill. rude waiter

I heard this place was great a couple years ago and thought i would finally try it. We were the first people that showed up at 8:15 saturday morning and waited right at the door for them to open which was at 8:35 (5 minutes late). the waiter unlocked the door and then proceeded to shut it in our faces instead of allowing us in. he then disappeared as we seated ourselves. then when he did come back, he sat down and had a 10 minute personal conversation with a couple that had entered the restaurant after us. when he finally came to serve us after serving 2 other tables who had sat down, he was abrupt and untalkative despite spending so much time chatting everyone else up.

the food itself was a disappointment especially since i had high expectations because of the price and other reviews. the eggs benny had almost no sauce and the "hash browns" were half cooked and strange tasting. they didnt even bother chopping them up. my best guess is that they were halfway through boiling the potatoes when the pot was knocked over. the potatoes were then scraped off the dirty floor onto our plates and voila, hash browns deluxe worth $10. yeah right! give me a break! the only thing this restaurant has going for it is the humorously tacky decor that was scrounged from east van dumpsters.

if you do get tricked into eating here, make sure you don't get the tall skinny male waiter with the shaved head. he should be fired.

My parents loved it too

I've now been here twice - once with friends from out of town and today with my parents for Sunday brunch. Everyone came away impressed.

Arrived today at about a quarter past 9 and the place was almost full. Great range of breakfast choices, all with memorable names. I had the "McDecimation of Cultural Diversity", which was two scrambled eggs, cheese, and Black Forest ham on a toasted English Muffin with salad and potatoes. My dad had a Benny and my mom the French Toast with cinnamon and honey butter.

All the dishes were excellent, and the coffee was GOOD. None of that weak diner "coffee" here. Lots of offers for refills, in contrast to some of the previous posters. Both times I've been here the food took about 25-30 minutes to arrive, so don't go when you're ravenous. This is definitely a place to "chat and chew", as the name suggests.

Best breakfast place in Vancouver right now.

Lotta Eggs, Little Coffee

Right off the bat, I must state that this is a great breakfast joint and that I highly recommend it. I have given it average ratings because it did not meet all of my needs as a breakfast aficionado.

First, the breakfast/brunch menu is predominantly savoury, as opposed to sweet. I need a restaurant that can offer pancakes, crepes, muffins, etc in addition to egg options. Sometimes I feel that egg-dominated restaurants are slacking, for it is rare to find a place that has both great eggs AND pancakes. Slickety Jim's has one or two French toast options, but these cannot compare to the restaurant's egg dishes.

Second, the staff were slow to refresh my coffee, and they weren't overly friendly. Unlike many reviewers here, we did not wait to get a seat, but we really had to harangue our server for coffee refills.

These quips aside, Slickety Jim's is like an East Side Sophie's with its wacky ambiance, creative dishes and strong, strong coffee. I will return!

hurry up and wait

Every time I've been here I've had to wait a good 30 minutes before being seated. Make sure you put your name on the wait list at the BAR when entering. Because I failed to notice the tiny sign on the door that said this, the waitress was about to give a table to another party, despite my standing at the uber-tiny entrance for 30 minutes... thankfully the other party was understanding so I got a table anyways. But c'mon, if this is the way they seat tables then it'd be simple enough to just acknowledge people upon their arrival and ask if they want to be added to the list.

Anyways. Food was tasty. The ambiance is funky and neat, but it felt horribly cramped and tiny, especially when seated in the center row of tables. If only this place had more space, it would be much much better.

Great huevos rancheros

I took a drive down Main Street thinking that the new Barney's Caffe across the street would have been open by now. It was still papered over so I went into Slickety Jim's instead. I ordered the huevos rancheros and was pleasantly surprised. Two sunny side eggs cooked on a bed of beans, cheese and a crispy tortilla with salsa and sour cream. The whole dish was simple and tasty; I will be back when I am craving some beans for breakfast.

Funky little Main street restaurant

Funky little main street restaurant decorated in junk yard finds. Always entertaining to look around the room. Soup and Sandwich selection is good. I enjoyed the mulligatawny soup and portobello mushroom sandwich, but my friend found the food bland.

Prices are reasonable and the staff is super friendly. On a cold day it can be cold as the door opens directly into the little cafe -- lots of people eating with their coats on.

Bennie the Sheik

Ah yes, the wait is the thing. We showed up on a Sunday for Main St. sheik and the famed bennies. The funky interior blends very well with the Main scene - tons of eye candy on the wall and old bus seats for some of the tables. You'll get lots of time to check out the style while you wait and wait (35 minutes on this trip) for a table. The waitress was pleasant, the coffee was excellent and the menu was a refreshing read. Our bennies arrived in 20 minutes and none of us were disappointed. Good portion sizes for the money and the eggs weren’t drowned in hollandaise - very, very tasty. The potatoes could use a bit of work though. I will definitely go back, but will try a weekday next time.

Wait time was terrible. Waited about 45mins at ~brunch time, but once we were in, food was great, selection was really good as was service.

FYI, they only serve breakfast and lunch on odd days and times. :/

+1 point for the trinkets hanging on the wall.

I've been here for brunch half a dozen times or so. Excellent coffee, good portions, mostly good ingredients. Every time I've been here my potatoes have been pretty bad, and nothing wrecks a diner breakfast for me like dry, underdone, bitter potatoes. Between that and the unbelievably slow service, I don't plan on going back soon.

Shame about the slow service
By diningdave of kitsilano (8 Reviews)

Fantastic atmosphere, great food, funny menu, but does it really take forty minutes to cook an egg? I've been three times and each time it took ages to take my order and ages for the food to arrive. And this on a weekday. It's such a shame because I love the place, but I can't understand why they can't do what most other restuarants do, just make the food fresh and get it out in a reasonable amount of time. Service is very personable despite this. Go, by all means, but be prepared to wait to get in, wait to get served and wait for your food.

This place is always busy and it's because it's good. Service can be a tad slow but due to the amount of people here on average I've no complaints, besides the staff are so good humoured it's hard to find fault. Food is always outstanding so whenever I think I can handle the crowds it's a sure thing.
