The Shore Club Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge features fresh seafood and tender steaks served in surroundings of understated luxury.
I have always noticed the Shore Club when driving downtown and turning into the Pacific Center parking lot. Always wanted to give it a try to see what culinary excellence they have inside. Dineout Vancouver was our chance to give ourselves an excuse to go in.
Boy... were we ever in for a disappointment. I am not sure if it was my weak taste buds or the whole cooking team went on vacation. The food was just AWFUL! The lobster bisque tasted heavily filled with cream without much lobster shell taste to it. Even worse, the bisque was so salty that it was border-line of being bitter. My fiancee's crab cake was alright but nothing of spectacular fashion.
Then comes our entree, my fiancee's sable fish was so disgusting. The prosciutto basically doesn't match with the fish. The prosciutto was really crispy, stringy and chewing make it really tough to cut and there were basically no thoughts put into it. She ended up chucking out the wrapped prosciutto layer. My salmon plate was alright, nothing to complain too much about, but it was very ordinary like most salmon plates.
For dessert, the sorbet was a bit sweet but it's bearable. If you are American and loves sugar, then you might like it. The fruity taste is strong and apparent and quite refreshing aside from being a bit on the sweet side. The key lime pie continues the trend of poor food for the rest of the night. The key lime pie was basically not edible, even if you are from the south sugar loving nation. The pie was overwhelmingly sweet, I can't even taste anything except for sweet (not even some sourness in key lime pie).
For $38 menu, this is terrible. I can get better food at Hons or Japadog on the street. One of the worst Dineout experience ever. I guess next time I head downtown, I wouldn't even look twice into Shore Club before I turn into the Pacific Center parking lot. It was just that bad! Well.. at least service and ambiance were acceptable.
This restaurant has an interesting feel/atmosphere - I was impressed when we first arrived. The service was good, our server was friendly and funny. But the food was seriously overpriced. Entrees do not include sides, so it's a la carte style, which would be ok if the food had been good. My husband had the stuffed rainbow trout which was bland and very small. I had the salmon wellington which was dry and unappetizing. The sides were all so-so. I honestly could have prepared a better dinner myself at home, and wished that I had. Dinner + 1 bottle of wine for 4 of us cost nearly $400. It was disappointing and left a lot to be desired.
I was lucky enough to be taken out to dinner by some out of town friends. I had never heard of the Shore Club, (sister to another steakhouse, Gothams) ,a very opulent new restaurant with high ceilings, a beautiful bar and open kitchen that reminded me of the TV show, "Hell's Kitchen". Well, they needed Gordon Ramsay to shake them all up, the waiters in their white jackets that didn't fit were trying hard but seemed to be running round in circles. The food was disgraceful for the cost...for an appetizer one soggy crab cake with a slice of tomato was $18, calamari $15 and it went from bad to worse. All the entrees were disappointing, my salmon wellington at $27 was OK but looked lonely. All sides are priced extra, shoestring potaotes were $7, and veggies up to $11, House rice was $15!! My friends had a filet mignon for $42 that looked burnt, and a salmon fillet ($30) that was declared good. However, at these prices you expect an exceptional dinner and this certainly wasn't. I found the restaurant noisy especially if seated by the kitchen. It all cost over $8 million and that's why they charge $18 for a crabcake!
This is a beautiful restaurant, with gorgeous lighting, woodwork and a real retro decor. The staff are dressed and the idea behind the restaurant is good. All they have to do is knock about 10.00 of every item on the menu and I'd go back. The food is good, but there are many places in Vancouver that have outstanding food, good atmosphere and are priced more rationally.
First off, this place is very expensive. Appetizers are in the $15-$30 range and entrees are upwards of $40. With that out of the way, let me just say that I had my best steak over the last couple of years from this place when I checked it out with a friend, about a week ago.
Food - Incredible New York strip. Had it served rare and it was cooked to perfection. Absolutely fantastic steak... the side salad I ordered left something to be desired, but the perfection of the steak certainly made up for that.
Service - Not bad. Definitely not as knowledgeable as you'd expect out of this 'caliber' of restaurant. Relatively fast with the food, but slow on the drink service.
Ambiance - Incredible. Huge ceilings and fantastic bar setup. The lounge looked like it should have been used for a "Sex and the City" film shoot.
Took guests from Japan to the Shore Club last week and not only were they impressed but everything went right . All 6 of us had seafood appetizers and the tuna and oysters were terrific . We than all had steaks or lamb and everyone had their protein cooked perfectly which very seldom happens. The service was attentive and friendly without making you feel that someone is looking over your shoulder. The room is beautiful and the piano music made for a memorable evening . We finished with cappuccino's and lattes that were also served without fault . Although somewhat expensive I felt it was worth every penny when everything goes smoothly and all enjoy the food , service and ambiance .
I had dinner here twice in the last few months and both times have been excellent. I thought that the atmosphere was relaxing and the decor is grand with high ceilings and big comfy banquettes. The lounge downstairs looks great as well. There is a bar in front of the open kitchen that you can sit and eat at. Servers are very professional and always explained features and answered questions.
I had their mussels as an appetizer and the white wine sauce was delicious, maybe a bit on the too rich/salty side, but mussels were plump and not overcooked. In the two visits, I tried their mixed grill (with lamb chops, filet mignon, new york steaks, and prawns) and mixed seafood grill (with, if I remember correctly, salmon, swordfish, halibut, and prawns). The meats were cooked to perfection as I requested. The fish were all moist and tender on the inside. Portions were quite large considering there was a combination of meats. We also had creamed spinach and coleslaw as sides, neither of which we finished. The one dessert I tried was their sorbet terrine - the flavours were fresh and rich.
I disagree with the negative reviews below and definitely recommend this restaurant.
The service was outstanding. From the valet, to the host to the waiters. There were six of us and we all ordered different dishes and shared everything. There was no room for dessert but I will certainly get some next time. You do need deep pockets but it is worth it. I felt like we were at a private house party. It was intimate, quiet and spacious. Well done Shore club !
Went there for late dinner on a weekday with 2 girl friends.
Service was really great, he was professional and very good in explaining the menu to us. Perhaps it's not a busy time, he always showed up at the right moment. It was late, and we only got 3 girls, so we decided to order 2 appertizers, 2 entrees, and 1 side to share. Actually it was the server suggested us to do so because he said the portion is big.
The appertizers were incredible! The shrimps for the shirmp cocktail were REAL jumbo shrimp. They were double the size of a regular cocktail shrimp. Mussels were BIG and very fresh. Their potato bread was one of the best bread I had in restaurant, but not so good when it cool down; no wonder why the server wanted to take it away after the appertizers. So after the great appertizers, the entree really disappointed me. The new york strip tasted good, but kind of chewy at the side (I expected better steak for that price). We ordered medium rare, but it looked more like medium to me. The trio of seafood..... Everything was too way dry. So my conclusion is... shrimp cocktail and mussel, if you get a great souce of seafood, it's not hard to make it taste good. But when they really needed to cook the fish, they didn't do it right. For that price range, they didn't do a good job on the cooking part. We had key lime pie for dessert and it was lovely.
The decoration of the restaurant was wonderful. I enjoyed their live piano preformance for the whole evening.
If I am going back (unsure), maybe I will put my money on 2-3 apperiters and skip the entree.
Been there a few times for business lunch. Nice atmosphere, comfortable seating, good selection of food.
The pan friend oyster is excellent. I'm not a big lunch eater so usually that and a salad (sometimes a lobster bisque) will do. For dessert, their key lime pie is one of the best I've had.
Ambiance is above average, not as noisy as the other chains down the street.
I've been to The Shore Club twice now and really enjoyed the experience. If your looking for an impressive restaurant to bring a date I would recommend The Shore Club. It's a little expensive but well worth it for the overall experience. They offer valet parking in front of the restaurtant (off Dunsmuir) if your having trouble finding parking or prefer to valet.
Review is about two weeks old. My wife and I had a night to celebrate and as we had heard so much about this place (including the very positive review in Air Canada's En Route Restaurant edition), we gave it a first try. Very impressive decor, though be prepared to get a bit of work-out if walking up the stairs to dining room. It was a Sat night and we were very surprised how empty it was (we were early - but I suspect that this place does a lot of weeknight expense account business) We choose a table facing the kitchen. We kept remarking on how comfortable the room was, and how much it made us feel like we were at sea on ocean liner. Service was very good - our waiter (David?) was formerely of Four Seasons - clearly very professional and a pleasure. Food was good (both had steaks). But I had been out the week before to Morton's on a corporate event and ended up having the same steak (bone in rib eye). When looking at the menu I remarked how much less expensive it was at Shore ($40 vs $56 at Mortons), however when it was served to me I was surprised how thin it was - about a 1/4 inch thick. Still it was properely prepared. My wife very much enjoyed her filet. She was surprised to find that they do not serve Prime Rib roast. After a so so dessert (the brownie), we headed downstairs to the bar, of after dinner drink and to enjoy the pianist (who was extremely good). All in all good meal, great atmosphere, relativily good value - but next time I might suggest we have a drink, before and after at Shore, but walk down to Morton's for Prime Rib and big thick steak.
Took 4 people from my office for lunch. Service was pleasant but brutally slow. Also, if you are not going to have any explanation or description on your menu then your servers better know what they are talking about. Took 15 min to get a server to take our order, another 10 before we got wine and at the 1 1/4 hour mark, still no lunch. Food was cold and bland - steak sandwich was meat, bread and cold fries - for $20. Lobster club was mayo, white bun (not fresh), bacon and lettuce - again $20. Chopped salad was lettuce, chick peas, onion and bean sprouts???What?? That isn't a chopped salad. Chef needs to completely rethink lunch menu. Overpriced and underdelivering. Manager handled complaint well when we brought it up but would have expected a more proactive approach. Invited us back for lunch but really, we don't have the time.......
My review of the Shore Club keeps being deleted because I did not like the place the one time I went there . Not my fault if I was not impressed by the food , I had a steak which was no better , smaller and no tastier than a steak at the Keg , for about double the price . The room itself is quite nice and the service was OK but not great for the prices charged . I will never go there again , but obviously this is a personnal choice .
I went this last Tuesday. I don't know if my mood was set on "I enjoy everything" but this place was not that bad at all. The prices certainly are high but the ambiance and the service where EXCELLENT. I can't say it was the best salmon wellington I'd ever ate but the piano music and the wine where (i guess) some of the things who made me like this place. Not recommended for cavemans bronto-burgers-eaters like, just regualr people who wants to have a glass of wine with some food.
Having read some of these reviews, I would've definitely skipped this place had I been paying. Fortunately I was given a $100 gift card and couldn't pass it up.
As per our waiter's suggestion, I went with the Macadamia-Crusted Halibut. My fiance went with the Buttermilk Fried Chicken. We were advised as we ordered our food that they didn't come with any sides, so we also ordered sauteed beets and salt & vinegar shoestring fries.
Both meals were delicious, though the fried chicken caught us off guard. It came on a big dish, and literally looked like they cut up the chicken into 4 chunks, fried it and put it on the plate. It could've easily fed us both - I ended up eating a large portion of it.
We also had the Creme Brulee for dessert and a pop. Along with tip it used up the entire gift card. Ouch. I would've preferred a card to Joey's or any similar place where $100 would've gotten us a few drinks each on top of the food.
Dined there this past Saturday, first time. Decor is very good, felt very comfortable and really enjoyed our table overlooking the bar and lounge. Cannot tolerate waiting and am pleased to say that the wait staff were consistently there when needed....with knowledge and wonderful ability to imbue just the right amount of attitude/humour for our group. Very good!
Our group of 4 all enjoyed our dinners immensely. My petite filet was perfectly prepared and my request for simple, fresh greens was just what I wanted.
I love the commute as I live upstairs and will now return often. Even before we ate, we all commented on the inviting look of the lounge, to be especially appreciated on a damp cold Vancouver winter night....and this is only a damp cold August night!
Entering (and leaving) the restaurant was alas my favorite part of the experience. The decor is 1970's hotel (down to the servers in serving coats that don't quite fit). While palatial with veneers and the typical nouveau gaudy you've come to expect from this price-point, nothing atmospherically really grabs you (other than high ceilings) if you've been to more than 1 or 2 of these places. Lunch is overpriced and underwhelming. Basically, it felt like thinly veiled pub food (and ironically, I've had better pub food at the pub).
