Last week, I was here to try their Ramen noodles and Gyoza. I ordered the shoyu char-su ramen (soy sauce flavoured broth with barbeque pork) and a side of gyoza (6-pieces of pan fried dumplings). It was during lunch so the place was really busy and full but luckily service was quick and my meal was served pretty fast. The noodles were so so, but the broth tasted like the ones you get from instant noodles. The char-su was too dry and not too flavourful. Last but not least, the gyoza was burnt. It was fast but I wished they could've taken their time to prepare something better.
Shogun is geared towards the Downtown Business Crowd lunch, and therefore, many businessmen are willing to sacrifice quality for speed at an affordable price.
Shogun delivers on those points. Services is fast, your order arrives within 10 min max, and your are given your bill quickly. You can have a made to order meal and be out in as fast as 20 min - something appealing to most of Shogun's clientele.
What Shogun fails to deliver is - Good food. Sushi uses very low grade seaweed that absorbs moisture and doesn't rip apart. Rice is uneven in the Nigiri and rolls, and cuts are imprecise and uneven. The Tuna/Salmon Rolls honesty have the fish slice the diameter of a Pencil! seriously. Nigiri is ultra thin. Unacceptable Sushi for any Japanese person on any standard...which probably is why the place is Korean Run.
The Ramen and Curries are a step up, but again they sacrifice quality for speed. Soup is missing a bit of depth that is supposed to be acquired from Konbu, Pork Bones, and dried Tuna. Corners were obviously cut in making the broth....but all in all it is still acceptable.
If you are looking for a speedy "decent" lunch in the downtown area, come here. Avoid the Sushi - stick to the cooked items. However, if you have any sense of food pride and want a meal made with care...than avoid.
