As everyone knows wild salmon is the only way to go , farmed salmon is terrible, I've stopped ordering salmon from Vancouver restaurants because it's usually farmed, even if you ask if it's Wild "they" will still try and get away serving farmed.I normally find Shin Ju bearable at best ... hit and miss with quality. But "Old" farmed salmon sushi is the worst. I do like their Wild salmon when they have it, it's normally fresh but over priced, compared to other Sushi restaurants, some of the staff here need to move along in their choice of careers, While others are super friendly. So not all bad, just don't like the farmed salmon. I think that part is clear.
For an All You Can Eat this place has got better over the years....or is it that others have gone downhill? The lunch at $10.95 was good value, they brought us everything we ordered and it was fresh, good quality sushi. We had a baby with us and they were quite accomodating, no sneers like at some restaurants. The dinner AYCE is $17.95 with a greater selection so will try that one day.
On the positive side, the delivey was very quick. Unfortunately that was the only thing that was good about this experience. We had easily the worst miso soup ever (no flavour) and gomai bordering on rotton spinach, with adequate dynamite (way to heavy on the tobiko) and california rolls. The tempera was only okay and the sushi (ebi and tomago) was uninspired. On the whole, very dissappointing for we paid ($45). At least we didnt have to wait for it.
Go for the lunch all-you-can-eat special. They offer it every day. Food is fresh. Order everything you want on the first sheet as they don't bring you another one. You usually get everything you order, but sometimes you have to remind them about an item. sometimes you get a surprise as they drop a dish on your table meant for another. Doesn't matter it is all good.
I ordered lunch “take out” from them few times because they are so close to my work.
As soon as I opened the box, I noticed the colour of the rice. It was yellowish and at least 1 or 2 days old. I just ate it without making a big deal out of it for the first few times. I ordered from them again thinking they will serve better rice next time but they continuously packed old-yellowish rice. I am not sure if they pack old food for “take out” customers only but regardless, this made me think twice about the freshness of other food items in this combo box. They’ve lost my trust and I WILL NEVER ORDER FROM THEM AGAIN!!!!
I was in the area when I remembered this spot, from a co worker who eats there often.
I tried AYCE Sushi at the dinner hour, tried the Chicken Teriyaki with rice, Avacado, California Rolls & Tuna & Salmon Ebi.
The Tuna & Salmon Ebi, was excellent, fresh, and was first to arrive at my table. The chicken teriyaki, isn't large in size, but when you're eating other food, you don't need alot to get full. I didn't think the teriyaki was that great, the sauce was a bit salty, and wasn't as good as other places... This is how we all learn. The California & Avacado rolls where good, but at this point I'm getting stuffed, not as hungry as I thought.
The best part, since I didn't eat as much as I thought I would, they charge me for lunch time price vs the dinner price. Thumbs up for giving me the deal.
As for the service, I found it to be friendly, they answered my questions and quick to arrive with the food.
I would return to try other things at this spot.
This place used to be Sui Sha Ya, until they changed there name to Shin Ju. As far as all you can eat goes, it's pretty much identical to how it was when it was Sui Sha Ya (I don't want to say the same for sure)
Let's start off with the bad news first and then get to the great news.
The service here sucks. Usally if want to order seconds, you have to waive down the waitress, and also if I am out with a friend, and we order the same dish (assuming though they only do it when it's all you can eat) then instead of bringing up 2 separate plates, they usually only put it on one.
The Good news though is, that the food is great, and you really do get your moneys worth. The food really does make up for the crappy service. The ambiance is ok. I am rating it 2 stars, because it's not all that bad, (the waitresses are really friendly and I enjoy talking to them)
I usually prefer going to the Sui Sha Ya in Metrotown or Richmond, ONLY BECAUSE I am not a big fan of that part of West Broadway. but if I don't have a car, or just don't want to travel far and just be somewhere on Broadway, then I definatly will be back at this location in a matter of seconds, and yes, I would recommend them except for thier service (though thier service is friendly...so that's a bonus)
Got invIted out to this place so I didn't pick up the tab but I was still resentful of having to actually dine here. I am not a sushi snob and enjoy cheap sushi both from takeout joints and the mass-production AYCEs. The sushi is not only sub-par but the variety is restrictive and many of the Japanese classics are not offered. The service was at best indifferent. I don't unqualified bad reviews very often (in fact almost never as I am very forgiving), but this place has earned this one.
I have been to this Sushi place many times and the service just keeps getting worse. The quality of seafood in the sushi is poor too. The waiters watch over you to prevent sharing between friends if you order buffet! I understand this policy but to rudely come over and say "No Sharing!" in front of everyone is really lame!
I will not be visiting this restaurant at lunch with my collegues again!
After reading some reviews for Shin Ju, thought I'd try out the lunch AYCE. Found it to be no different than any other Japanese AYCE for lunch. Very standard salmon & tuna sashimi, teriyakis, rolls... nothing special. I'd try others before coming back.
We have been here a couple times. Always for all-you-can-eat and once for benot boxes because there were only two of us. The all you can eat is great. Some places only have this on Fridays, which mens they are trying to get rid of all the leftover fish before the weekend. But Shin Ju offers All-you-can-eat EVERY DAY, which means it should always be fresh. And it is.
The service is fine, but we have found a couple times that we order four of one dish and only three arrive, and then we order one more and we get a portion for two. So I think they just kinda bring you whatever. But it's okay, because it's all-you-can-eat, so just order more. The place could also use a good top-to-bottom with a grease cutter solution. But it's good eats for the price, and fun to share with your friends
I had measured my homes distance from the restaurant and I was within the 5 km however they checked their ipod and said it was 5.1km and couldn't deliver. I double checked on google and it said 4.8km. They then said that the driver will agree but in the future if the driver doesn't want to they aren't required to. I also want to note that on the menu it says free delivery within 5km soo from my deduction its deliver within 5km or not at all not even a deliver charge. The time I ordered was acceptable it was 930pm they close at midnight. I was also informed their deliver service stops at 945pm. They did deliver but when I went to pay I should have received 8 dollars back and the driver just turned around and left, I had to stop him and ask for my change.
This experience is the worst I have ever had for a restaurant. My family had actually visited this establishment quite often because their food was good, but unfortunately the food this time was horrible, combined with the service this has changed my mind and I do not recommend Shin Ju as it has poor service and treat their patrons with disrespect.
As far as cheap sushi goes you cannot beat Shin Ju!
The service isn't always the best, but it is always friendly, and it is very evident that the servers try their best.
For value the sushi is fantastic, the rolls are large and very well rolled (I don't think I've had one fall apart yet).
I've tried cheap sushi places all over the area and in downtown Vancouver and shin ju is always the best value, it is a couple more cents than some of the others but it is so worth it.
We always come to Shin-Ju when we get the chance!
The all you can eat is quick and fantastic (and well priced) and the tuna sushi melts in your mouth. Being just a stone's throw away from Granville Island, the ingredients are fresh and great tasting. We bring all of our out of town guests here.
If you want a really cheap all you can eat, hit up Shin Ju for the lunchtime menu. You're limited to just 4 pieces of sashimi per person, but you only pay around $12 for an okay selection. That's okay, because this place has THE BEST spicy tuna cones I have ever had, and those are unlimited on all ayce menus.
The dinner is more pricey, around $20, but you get unlimited sashimi. Overall, the sushi quality is decent. The rice isn't too dry and they don't put way too much rice in the rolls like some ayce restaurants do. They are also quick to get you more food and I don't often miss items or have items I didn't order brought to me.
The chicken teriyaki on the ayce menu was a particular favourite of mine when I still ate meat, and is also a favourite of all the guests I bring there. It actually doesn't seem that special, just a piece of chicken with teriyaki sauce, but it is always so incredibly tasty. Nice and hot and crispy with a delicious sauce.
This is one of my staple restaurants and I hope it doesn't go away.
