A neighbourhood sushi restaurant on Denman near Comox.
I was strolling with Mrs. C looking for a place to get some food in the crowded Denman restaurant corridor, when I spotted Shima. It looked like a small unpretentious place. They have different specials, and I chose a sushi box with chicken teriyaki, a salad and some sushi, and complemented it with a beef teriyaki roll and some tuna nigiri. My beloved table companion had chicken udon.
The service was quick and efficient and the place was tidy including the w/c. The food was a disappointment. The sushi was not very fresh or well-made, and the udon didn’t have enough chicken or noodles. The place had lots of customers, so maybe they just don’t care about making good food but rely on cheap prices to lure in the punters.
Too bad because it looked like a nice place. We were disappointed with the food, but at least it was cheap.
Not recommended.
Simple, and always good...we continually return here. For one, it's in our hood...but it's also reliable. always fresh, and very reasonable. We tend to stick to the lunch combination special...about $6-$7 for 18 pieces of sushi. The place has improved in ambience this year and has added ceiling fans which keep the inside comfortably cool. It is pretty tiny, but rarely does one have to wait to be seated.Sounds crazy, but Shima is one of the reasons we love spending our summers in Vancouver!!!
There are just so many sushi spots in the West End, most selling the generic stuff. Shima is small, slightly claustrophobic with only one table large enough to seat four. It is at a disadvantage as opposite is Akira which, although also small, is one of the area's better sushi restaurants. In saying that, Shima was passable, the rolls were fresh and the value good. However, to build your business you need to stand out from the competition and Shima does not do that.
Food: I was surprised! The yam tempura rolls were still crispy, with good tempura batter. The salmon rolls were tasty, with a good portion of salmon.
Service: We waited awhile for our sushi, but there really was only one chef working. It was quite disgusting watching the chef prepare the sushi. Better sanitary skills are definitely needed. I am glad I didn't get a stomachache.
Value: It's decent value considering it's Downtown.
Ambiance: You can see the backroom from the interior of the restaurant...it looks kind of messy.
Stopped by Shima after a wald around English Bay. It's a small restaurant. But...
This is our neighborhood sushi place, and as far as we're concerned it can't be beat. Excellent quality, very reasonable prices..tiny place with no atmosphere...but still our favorite!!! Excellent daily specials, very big choice of standard dishes..never disappointed!
It's a great place for inexpensive comfort dished.
This place is consistently good for rolls. I've been going here for over 5 years probably 3 or 4 times a month, and while not everything is perfect all the time, it's better than most places in it's price range. Even when I get takeout everything is fresh, and when you eat in you can watch your food get made by the chef, so you know how fresh it is.
Abysmal food. There are many places in Vancouver that are equally cheap but the food is not awful, don’t bother to waste your time. We generally are hesitant to try new sushi, we have been disappointed before, this place only confirmed that we should stick to other places. Chewy nori, plastic tamago, luke-warm and tasteless agedashi tofu, insipid miso, and unsavoury looking spicy tuna, and this is the first sushi restaurant that we have never finished our meal and we are from the PRAIRIES, not a place renowned for the freshness of it’s fish! Worst restaurant so far in Vancouver. Try Samurai or Kadoya or Kisha Poppo (all on Davie, and in that order), if they are full rummage in the garbage before coming to this place.
