Best falafels I've eaten in a long time.

Four of us had dinner here last weekend. We shared the falafels and some yam fries for appetizers, all yummy. The falafels were cooked just right, crispy but not overfried, on the outside, and moist and flavorful inside. A welcome change from the incinerated hockey pucks we had at Nuba's previously. The lamb shank and shashuka that we had as entrees were delicious and filling. The chocolate ganache cake was moist and rich, and the gelato was wonderful too. Generous portions, good value for money. We'll definitely be back for more!

Fresh fruit icecream and yummy sweets

My daughter who was 25 on 8/8/08 went to this INDIAN restraunt last night and I had to sneak back to try the raspberry icecream. I also had a craving for milk cake so decided to check out their Sweet shop through the door to their dining room. I asked for a couple of pieces of milk cake. The server, who had a beautiful smile, refused to take any money!!!!!!! Milk cake is usually quite dear. I would have expected to pay a Toonie at least. I tried to give her the coin but she just said no no no. To top this kindness, it turns out to be the best milk cake I have ever had, here or in India!!!!!!
I slipped through the dining room to the icecream parlour/bar. The raspberry icecream was served up by another smiling woman and it revialed the mango of last night. I must ask more details about the icecream. It is hard so not like gelato which I don't like. It is not as creamy and sweet as say Baskin Robbins but is satisfying. NOt like surbert where you feel like you have just had a whipped up popcicle. The server said it is made on the premises. I will return to get more of the story. This only requires taking the long way home to New West. and sacrificing the gas!!!!!!! What sin one will commit for icecream

Disappointed

The babaganoush salad was excellenet. The minestrone soup was mediocre. The chicken schnitzel was awful. It is supposed to be a pounded chicken breast; instead it was a blob of thick chunks of dark meat fried in some tasteless batter, not even sure it was breadcrumbs. Didn't even taste like chicken. I took one bite and was too disgusted to eat any more. The place is very nice and clean, so I might visit again to try the shakshuka.

My family and I went to Shashuka last week, on a weekday evening around 6:30 pm. We all had the gelato - every flavour was lovely.
We also took a "to go" container with four salads. These are what blew me away. I'll talk about them in order of preference, but I don't know their names. The yam and feta was insanely good and different. The eggplant mixture was spicey and complex. The bean and the ratatouille tied for 3rd place - both very yummy. I heated them slightly before serving. Very impressed, amazing price.
The staff was smart, sexy and savvy.
We didn't order off the menu, so I can't speak to that.

If the people in the area want to see a really special place survive and thrive in an evolving neighbourhood, it's worth at least a try. Think back to some of your favorite spots (ie Barefoot Contessa or Locus restaurant on Main for instance) - they had growing pains, and so will Shashuka so be brave and give them your feedback so it can evolve. Thanks for reading my two little cents.

I ate at ShaShuka last night with my wife, after hearing about it from a close friend. Let's just say that the friend wasn't wrong! This trendy bistro is not only a spectacular restaurant, but a gelato place, a coffee shop and an art gallery as well.

The portions are huge and delicious. Each entree comes with soup AND a choice of a delicious salad from their salad bar, and most of them come with potatoes and vegetables too. The food is more than reasonably priced, the music is good, the art on the walls and in the display cases ensure your eyes never get bored and it is an overall great place.

I will definitely be going back.

Unimpressive at 3 in the morning

I went with a group of 6 people about 3 or 4 in the morning. There were only 2 servers, and judging by how slow the food came out they were probably cooking it too. I ordered my food 10 minutes after everyone else, and my order came with all of their's - PLUS I had to wait for at least 15 minutes. Slow slow service, and not everyone had food either.
I had the herb omelette - small portion and it came with pre-made salad and guacamole and another sauce I forgot, none of which looked appetizing. There was also small pieces of deep fried potato cutlets - looked like it came from the frozen meal aisle. This came to $7-8. Other people in my group had soup, which they said was lukewarm and thin, and also some of the meat items offered on the menu. The meat items came out deep-fried or in tiny portions that poked out sadly on dishes beside pre-made sides.
I can't say that this place doesn't deserve a visit though - it just opened and the gelato might be worth another try; I just don't think I'll be back anytime soon.
