It's all about the food here, - exceptional

I think he's figured it out. From what I'm told, the owner is a chef and that's the difference. Food is exceptional. We came in at 8pm Saturday, all tables full of traditional European families having dinner. Platters of food coming out of the kitchen. Children, little people playing on the empty dance floor, very nice. The setting sun streaming through the window. It's not often that I feel absolutely comfortable when stepping into a restaurant, - but that's what I felt, totally at ease. It was like a scene out of a Godfather movie. Beautiful.

A little after 9pm the band set up and the music started. Great selection of dance music, salsa, cha cha, ballads, and the dance floor is full. You can't ask for much more, good food, service, and music? These things are rare in Vancouver and I was glad to be part of it.

Key here is the food. Describing it misses the point, he's a chef, he knows how to make anything taste and look good. My second time here in a month, and I think it's a success. Good, congratulations, thank you.

That Piri Piri sauce

I can't believe I am the first person to write a review here. We've been going to Senhor Rooster since it's old locale on Rupert. They've recently moved to Renfrew and they are still as good as before. I was not familiar with Portuguese food until I tried this place, love their Portuguese cornish game hen! It's flavourful with a hint of spice but packed with flavour. My last visit I had the lamb dinner and it was enough for 2 meals! Pork and clams is another favourite. When u go, you must ask for the owner's special mango piri piri sauce, its amazing. At this new location, they've expanded and even has a patio, hope to check them out again this summer and sip on some sangria and spicy chicken, what can beat that?!?!

Nothing to Crow About

One of the worst dinning experiences we have ever experienced. I assume that all the patio tables had been added to the inside dinning for the winter, because the restaurant tables were so tightly jammed together that you could not pull your chair out to sit and the waitress could not walk between tables to serve us. This of course assumes that she was was making an effort. A poor assumption given that it took 2hrs 15min to be served. I had the paella and my wife had the red snapper. The paella was OK but unremarkable and the red snapper sauce tasted canned. I had to eat the paella with my fingers and a coffee spoon because the waitress had remover most of the cutlery when she cleaned up a spill and despite being asked twice did not bring replacements.
The kicker of the evening however was when I was told that a 15% gratuity was automatically billed. I have worked in the food industry so I know how important tips are but they are an extra to be earned not demanded. The only saving grace of the evening was that the live band was quite good and enjoyable. Unfortunately the over crowded restaurant let to an over crowed dance floor.
To sum it up, it was over crouded, the service stank and the food wasn't very impressive.

Fine dining Portugese?

The ambience of this restaurant is nice, fine dining, with live music after 9pm. However, i really have to question authentic Portugese food as being fine dining. This is another restaurant i've been to where the apetizers are better than the entrees. Overall, the food was good, but it's more a fine dining restaurant catering to Canadian taste than truly authentic Portugese food.

My friends and I decided to come to this restuarant for a birthday party and had a blast. The food was fantastic and huge portions. THere was about 20 of so the food did take it's time since it was also a packed house. The servers were great and very friendly. THe band was great!!!! There's a fairly large dancefloor and the music was latino and comtemporary pop. Definately will be frequenting Senhor Rooster much more often!!!!

Nothing to go cock-a-doodle doo about

A group of us went here to try out the food as it was recommended by someone else. Where does one start? First impression, the surroundings look drab and dirty. I'm really not sure what was so good about the food. The chicken had a funny smell and taste to it that it literally turned you off from eating.
My friend had the clams appetizer which also had a funky smell to it. The overall presentation of all the food looked like it was slopped onto the plates. I was told the owner was the Chef, how can a Chef serve food like this without any pride? Its pretty disgusting if you ask me.
As for the service, it was okay, I found that they all seemed somewhat scattered plus too many of them constantly going outside for a cigarrette break.
My list about this venue could go on forever but in the end it boils down to the fact that I would definitely never recommend it to anyone.
Overall, to reiterate from judging the surroundings and presentation of the food, it doesn't look like a place that pays attention to hygiene or cleanliness (cutlery/glasses were greasy feeling).

Not what I expected

We recently came back from a trip to Macau and had some delicious portuguese food (make sure you go to A Lorcha if you go there). So we had a craving when we came home, after checking out a couple of magazines and DineHere we decided upon Senhor Rooster... and it was alright.

There was definately nothing special about this restaurant and it took our server a few minutes to figure out where to sit us in an empty restaurant (with only 1 or 2 other tables). The service was good, but not great.

We ordered a pitcher of sangria (which was not of the highest quality I'm afraid) and checked out the menu. At first glance it is pretty expensive for the area of town. However when the meals came, we understood why... huge portions and the food was okay, good maybe. But it felt like somewhere I had been 20 years ago, the sauces were heavy and the atmosphere dark.

The flavor did not explode like it did in Macau, and for that we were disappointed. We might give it another try, but there are many of other Portuguese restaurants we want to try again first.

food for thought

I found this restaurant on the Dine here website. We were going to a concert in the area and decided to try this restaurant. I must say that we would definitely go there again. The food was wonderful. However the service wasn't exactly what I would call swift and food arrived for us in spurts. My order came before anyone elses and I had a choice of letting it get cold or eating in front of everyone. I finished mine before anyones elses got to the table. It would have been nice to eat with the rest of my friends
