Wouldnt go back ..

My family went to dinner here with our travelzoo coupons the menu they had for travelzoo customers was bad.. not a menu that would encourage you to come back (w/ or w/o a coupon)
I ordered the scallop and rockfish jambalaya. There was no rock fish and only about 3 scallops. The jambalaya tasted like ketchup and rice. The portions were pretty small and for some reason the chef thought adding plain greens onto every plate made it look better.... this was not the case... this part drove me insane.. on every plate there was a pile of plain greens.. even on top of my rice... weird combination, looked stupid.
Also our service was incredibly poor. The server kept whispering we couldnt hear her.. she also made us feel really uncomfortable.. when we said we were in a hurry for the bill she took about 20 minutes to give it to us, she was too busy chatting at the bar .. then she made a mistake on it and charged us for coffees which were included on our coupon. We were gonna be late for a show so we paid and left.

I would not recommend this restaurant
there are many great restaurants in yaletown, this is not one of them
(try hamilton street grill instead)

Dine Out Vancouver 2012
By ILOVE2EAT of East Vancouver (62 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, January 27, 2012 - 12:52am [Dine in]

I went here with three friends and glad we chose this restaurant. It was busy but not too noisy and we didn't feel rushed. Service was excellent. He wasn't overbearing and came enough times to check on us. And when we said something tasted really good, he would thank us!! He didn't flinch when we didn't order any alcohol beverages like some places may. Ambience was very nice. Not too crowded and not too noisy . . maybe because it was a week night instead of a weekend. The only annoying thing was the TV was on and showing "40 Year Old Virgin"!! WHY???
Appetizer: Three of us had the Bocconcini Saltimbocca salad and one the Cauliflower with cheese sauce. Salad was amazing . . . the balsamic vinegar was delicious! Didn't care for the cheese sauce with the cauliflower. It would have been better without the sauce.
Entree: Three had the Coca Cola Beef short Ribs and one had the Chicken Breast with Tomato Masala Cream. Both dishes were extremely flavourful and so delicious. The Masala cream sauce was very, very, very yummy!!! I wanted more with rice.
Dessert: Two had the Black and Blueberry Crumble with Vanilla Ice Cream and two had the Chocolate Mousse with Candied Pecans. Both were delicious but very, very, very small.
All in all, it was worth every penny. It was the $18 menu and I would highly recommend this place!! Would I go back? Yes I would to try their regular menu!!!

girlfriend and i decided to spend new years there. everything worked out great. food was unreal. bartenders nate and ellie, could not ask for better service. its been a while since i've seen that. they were getting slammed on bar and still were able to cater to us 150%! #pornstar martini's all night long! love you guys, we'll be seeing you a lot more in the future. cheers

Horrible Service, Food Alright

My boyfriend and I bought the Section 3 Groupon for a fixe 3-course meal. We made reservations for 2, and when we got there we were given a tiny little table behind a big group - the table was virtually placed on the side of a walkway. Naturally we felt a little appalled to be seated at such seats (definitely would not be enjoyable to eat dinner cramped in a walkway behind a big group), so we asked for a better seat by the bar, and even though they were hesitant about it, we got a slightly better seat. The food came and we thought it was pretty good - I got the Lemon-butter-sauce-drizzled pan-seared salmon and that was fantastic, the fish was not overcooked and the side tartar sauce with cucumbers was a unique twist to it! My boyfriend got the sirloin and that was good too, except it could have been juicier.
We were just finishing our drinks and dessert and the hostess came up to us and asked if it was okay to fit 2 people at our bar-table because it was a busy night. That was one of the most ridiculous offers I've had at a restaurant like this, midway through our meal! Our table was already small enough, and for 2 people + jackets and bags there was just adequate room for comfort. We told them we were just finishing our desserts and we will probably be done in 10 minutes (I have no idea why a customer would ever need to reassure the restaurant when they will be finishing their meal) and then hostess told us that we didn't have a choice because on a busy night like this, they would need to share tables. I was extremely disappointed at the service at Section 3 and their ability at handling busy times - I work at a restaurant myself and I definitely did not feel taken care of at this restaurant. To conclude, the general service was bad because our waitress was never around and hard to reach, we ordered drinks that took forever to come, and even though in the end they didn't seat anyone at our table during our stay we felt pressured to leave.

Great Start to the Evening
By Eboli of Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, July 12, 2011 - 2:16pm [Dine in]

For my buddy's bachelor party we wanted to start the evening off with a great dinner on a patio downtown. Unfortunately many restaurants will not book the patio. After speaking with the owner/manager of Section 3 she accommodated my group and we were set.

The service was wonderful and the wait staff was very accommodating to our typical bachelor party antics. The food was great, nice sized portions, well cooked (my chicken was juicy and tender), and the beer kept flowing. The only minor nitpick was that the menu was a bit limited, I think it was the standard menu and not a special group menu either, all the staples were there but perhaps a few more adventurous dishes would be in order.

On a final note even though we were a party of 10, they did not charge us a gratuity which left us free to set our own tip. Always a Plus. All in all a great time was had.

Horrible DJ and Overpriced
By Liquefaction of Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Friday, September 23, 2011 - 11:55pm [Dine in]

My coke was watered down, the meat in my poutine was dry and the portion for the salmon entree was tiny.

The DJ was HORRIBLE; could not transition between songs to save his life. And the music was also too loud for a lounge.

They did not tell us what percent the gratuity would be for our large group, so we were all very surprised to see that it was 18% even though the service was bad.

None of the waitresses smiled, and when they needed to reach around us to pick up or put down a plate, they wouldn't say "excuse me," they would just give us a little shove.

Not worth the price at all.

Save yourself!
By YumDum of Vancouver (4 Reviews)

The food was absolutely disgusting. They need a chef not the wanna be cook in the back. The fries were beyond overcooked they were cremated. they were so dark and looked like they had been cooked 8 times before the suckers arrived to patron this restaurant. The pizza was wet on the bottom. We all love a nice soup but this is ridiculous. The service, ambiance, was great but I wouldn't work there if I had to suffer the humiliation of delivering this to great people.

I only have one thing to say - - - Save yourself while there is still time.

Earlier this year, I held my engagement party at Section 3. The owner was incredibly helpful to our needs, the staff was fantastic and the price was so affordable. They opened the restaurant early to accommodate my guests, offered to decorate the place for us, and as an unexpected bonus, it was open mic night so we had great performers. This place is a little Yaletown gem!!! I highly recommend it for a party, a nice dinner, drinks on their sunny patio or to just have drinks at their "NERD" bar. There's also a great story behind the name of the place so make sure to ask your bartender/server.

A whole lot of "meh"
By kirstinle of Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, June 14, 2011 - 11:55pm [Dine in]

Three of my girlfriends and I went to Section 3 for one of the Stanley Cup Finals' games. When we arrived we stood there awkwardly for about 5 minutes before someone took the time to help us find a seat. As soon as I got there I felt like all the staff were wishing they were somewhere else. No one smiled at us, greeted us or made us feel welcome.

When we sat down at the bar, the bartender was chipper and seemed excited to serve us. The drinks were okay, and not too expensive so no complaints there.

We ordered the Nachos, which with guac came up to 12 dollars. These were probably the most pathetic nachos I have ever seen. Most of the chips were small and seemed like they came from the bottom of the bag. The toppings weren't evenly distributed and the dish as a whole was probably no more than an inch high.

Fast forward to the end...our bill. We were handed our bill, which she had put all together. We also noticed she had already put an 18% auto gratuity on the bill for herself. Ummm? For a group of four? Really?
We asked her to separate the bill and she said that couldn't be done on hockey nights because it gets too confusing or hectic.

Ooookay. I am a server myself, that was absolutely rediculous. Auto grat should be added only to large parties (8 or more,) and if not...they should have told us at the beginning that would happen. Also, splitting up a party of 4 people who didn't really have thattt many drinks shouldn't be too hard. Thats pure lazyness on her part.

To sum it up. Not worth it. There are sooo many nice restaurants downtown with friendly staff and great service. Dont go here!

Came here with 3 girlsfriends with Living Social Deal. Food was average, salad, salmon on wild rice and lentals and brownie for dessert. The deal was good, two could eat for $40.00. Drinks were expensive, service was terrible, nothing against the girl, she was polite and nice but just didn't know how to serve. Never asked us if we wanted more drinks, and we had to ask for coffee with our desserts which came after we had finished dessert. Pictures of naked women on the menu, and a large one by the door. They also were showing a movie on the tv that had some scenes that almost made me choke, on my dinner(like soft porn). The manager or whoever man at the door was not welcoming and really seemed like he wanted to be else where, no smile, nothing. As we left, passed the server and same man, we all said Thank you as we were leaving to no reply from anyone. Not worth the time, or the money, so many better places in Yaletown, if this is how they do business I can see them closed in a year.

Truck Stop food at High End price

I was in Yaletown looking for Lunch, with my personal trainer. Passing by Earls, and a few other restaurants.
It looked nice inside (more like a fancy strip-bar). We received our drinks right away, and the server was friendly. My friend ordered the Roasted Chicken Sandwich (with salad). And I got the Bacon Cheese Burger with fries. My co-patron asked me "how is the burger?". I said: "it's something, but not a burger". The chicken sandwich; turned out to be no more than, 5 small 1x 1/4 inch pieces of chicken, on what was diced red peppers and green onions. He said it was good! My Burger... Was a "pre-pressed piece of crap"! Not beef, something formed into a patty, then burned, with black char. It had 2 slices of tomatoes (no bigger than a toonie), and CHEEZ WHIZ.

Nothing great! Something you would get a a Truck stop, or some dive on Granville street!

With the only drinks being a Virgin Caesar, and water. the bill came to $32 and change.
It is a nice place, and the server seemed OK! and you are welcome to go, only I recommend don't try the food! It's not worth what you pay, unless you are hammered and want something in your stomach to keep from throwing up. :P

Never a disappointment

Living downtown and frequenting many of the same bars, restaurants etc I always find myself ending back up to Section 3. From my first experience and all of them following, the service is always punctual and they always have a smile. I am a realist, and understand when it gets busy that a drink order may take a minute or two longer, but I am never disappointed.

Having many of the items on the main menu as well as their fresh sheets, my taste buds are always left wanting one more piece of whatever is on my plate. Lately my favorite is their flatbread pizzas. They are crisp, and incredibly tasty, priced extremely well and the perfect size for a meal or to share among a few friends.

I love the atmosphere as well. It's very loungy, mood lighting, with the bar lite up and the "N E R D" above the bar. They also offer a patio that is a great spot to sit with a cold drink in hand while enjoying the summer sunshine. I enjoy my time very much when I am there. When I look to go out in Yaletown, I like people standing, sitting and talking all around with the music playing and drinks being served. I have enjoyed some of the live music they have had also. If you are looking for loungy and moody yet vibrant and lively, this is a place to check out.

Non Locals beware!!!
By vanyaletowner of Vancouver (downtown) (1 Review)
Submitted Wednesday, July 21, 2010 - 2:19pm [Dine in]

Let me start off by qualifying what I'm about to say by telling you, I live in Yaletown on Marinaside. I got a call from some friends in the neighborhood wanting a casual place to eat which wasn't too expensive. I suggested Section 3. I was invited to join them for a drink seeing as I had already eaten.

I get to the restaurant and see that my friends have ordered, at this point everyone was please with their meal. This is where everything goes sideways.

The Paris Hilton / Lindsay Lohan wannaby waitress comes over drops off the bill; my friends are surprise that she added a automatic 18% gratuity on the bill and are rightfully choked. I told them I would take care of this feeling bad as I'm the one who recommended this restaurant in the first place. She comes over and I ask why she added 18%. She said it’s because we’re a party of 6. Nowhere on the menu or front door does it state this policy. Further to this only 4 people ate while the other person just had a drink I came in after they got there meals.

So I objected quite forcefully as this wasn't the first time a Yaletown establishment pull this kind of stuff (Olympics) assuming that you were not a local. Ms. Hilton / Lohan became very defensive and belligerent. As we were leaving my friend went to pay and waitress confirmed or confessed that if she had know we were locals she wouldn't have put the 18% and that Management told her to put the automatic 18% on any table deemed non local (friends are Aussie and French). She went on to say next time just let us know you’re local. So there you go folks if you plan to go to Yaletown make sure you let them know your a local....Suffice it to say that I will be letting all my “Locals” and neighbors about what happen and encourage them to avoid this restaurant.

Went to this place for dinner. Food was okay. I ordered a pad thai with tofu.. found the noodles a bit too soft and too saucy. The waiter was nice, not very interactive. I didn't come here to drink, just to celebrate a birthday. It's reasonably priced, not like some of the other places around the Yaletown area. I liked the ambiance, nice looking bar, cool pictures, cool lighting. Not somewhere I would go back for a place to get dinner.. but maybe for drinks?

Loud music, abnoxious clientele: the lounge prerequisite
By Bonka of Vancouver (464 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, March 24, 2009 - 8:21pm [Dine in]

A friend wanted to get together Friday night to grab some eats and drinks. Most sit in establishments require waiting but I suppose we lucked out at getting a table immediately here.

We filled the night with order after order of cocktails, highballs, beers and straight shots, with some food mixed in to soak up the alcohol we consumed. While the food was standardized and somewhat showy food it was prepared well and tasted good (Tenderloin Tips and the Baked Brie), the yam fries were horrid, served so limp it mind as well should've been a yam mash instead. The flatbread was overpowered by the parmaesan in a tube. A few of the drinks ordered were rather watered down and the 7up and ginger ale we ordered in between drinks was just carbonated water with a lime wedge for garnish.

Our main waitress was personable and friendly, definitely working us for a bigger tip, but she did forget the glasses of waters we asked for a few times, though never forgetting the alcohol. Food took a long time to come out, fine in this environment but would be unacceptable at a restaurant. There were a few of the other staff members neglecting other tables, preferring to getting casual with the other lounge patrons with some form of seismic body convulsions they would call dancing. We were satisified enough with the service overall.

This has all the insignias of the typical lounge, with the dark and dim setting underscored by the bright neon lighting, the token and out of place "n e r d" sign over the bar (which I couldn't figure out if it was an abbreviation or just artistic significance), the loud prattle of the 30 somethings trying way too hard to be a 20 something all over, and the terrible local techno and fast food playlist music played via Macbook, which incidently got worse and louder at the same time as the night wore on. Even the DJ eventually wandered off his post to chit-chat with his familiars by the bar.

In all accounts this is what a lounge in these neck of the woods looks and smells like. Something about the vibe here rubbed me the wrong way, though maybe one would have to be in the mood for this.

This place used to be great before they revamped their menu. As I recall, they had a lamb menu item that was 16 bucks and was the size of a baseball and very tasty.

They have since jacked up the pricing and for what you get, it is simply not worth it. This is a good spot to have drinks and socialize with friends, but its not much of an eatery.

Surprisingly good value for Yaletown eatery
By frugalgourmet of Vancouver (70 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, July 3, 2009 - 12:57am [Dine in]

Food was well-valued for what you got - similar in price, quality and portion size as one of the casual-upscale chains. The miso salmon was way too salty. The golden beat prawns had a very tasty sauce, but no trace of dill as described on the menu. Service was unpolished - they servers and hosts wore their own clothing, so we often wondered whether the staff were nosy patrons or employees. Also, the drinks were not strong enough!

Trendy, chill place to hang out in Yaletown, food is solid not great by any means . . . but Fridays and Saturdays they have DJ's spinning tunes in house, so that's definitely a bonus.

Gave Section 3 more than a fair shot since it's about 10 minutes from my work. I really wanted to love it and impress this chick from work, but unfortunately I've been disappointed. First, by mediocre male servers who are only partially present at any given time. At any decent restaurant, you shouldn't have to ask for water twice... only to not receive it. Plus, would it kill them to have some tall attractive girls who are dressed well? Second, the food was uneven at best. On the visit the pork with described as amazing, but it was not while a grilled veggie appetizer featured crunchy, unseasoned eggplant. Over all, 50% of the dishes were sub-par. Not something I'm interested in for the price.I am not sure how impressive it was to a woman. thanks goodness for my charm. The silver lining is their delicious cocktails and beautiful, imaginative desserts.

Great Food and Excellent Staff

I have been to Section(3) a couple times, both for my birthday and then recently for a business dinner. Both times I dined in a group of 10-20 people and not only did everyone comment on how enjoyable the food was, but everyone also commented that the value was great for the food we received, especially during Dine-Out Vancouver.

The service in particular was very good. Despite being in large groups we were not kept waiting long for new drinks or for our various dinner courses. The staff were pleasant, friendly, and fun. They seamlessly blended into the interesting interior with lively neon colour choices and a fun atmosphere.

Additionally, through fault entirely of my own, I forgot a receipt at the restaurant which I needed for my corporate records. The restaurant staff were all very understanding and helpful, all the way from the servers to the managers and the restaurant owner. They were able to retrieve my original receipt and save the day!

Overall, I would certainly recommend Section(3), especially for fun group functions. It would also make a fun, laid back date spot too.

i had my party there because the reviews below me were great. now i shouldn't believe all that's said here.

our food came so slow that we had to rush to finish it all, and the cutlery wasn't even there in the beginning. the waitresses were nice, but they didn't take our orders till wayyy later so it was frustrating.

the appetizers were great (wings and yam fries and calamari), but the entree i had (asian stirfry udon) was a bit too salty.

okay food, slow slow service.
