Sala Thai serves up authentic Thai food in a cozy, laid-back atmosphere. They have a second location downtown on Burrard Street.
My husband and I are from Thailand and we truly appreciate the food and service at Salathai Cambie. I strongly recommend this restaurant for those who love Thai food. I took my friends there and they love it too. They really like the spicy dishes like Som-Tam, Tom-Yam-Goong, Tom-Ka-Kai, Kang-Dang. As for our kids, they love Pad-Thai and Spring rolls. Of course, we ordered a special dish of Som-Tam without chilly peppers for them and both of them finished the whole dish! We'll be back for sure!
I've been coming here for years and have always had a good experience. We usually order a soup (hot and sour), the squid salad, the vegetable delight (an assortment of veg),a curry, usually chicken and some rice. The food is always good and the service is pretty good too. A nice place for thai food.
Well, it appears we've been lucky the 10 or 15 times we've gone, or else we just have different tastes than other people.
We find the flavours quite well done. You can't beat their coconut rice. The curries are actually Thai curries, and the green papaya salad is spicy and refreshing all at once.
Well, I can't account for the other reviews on here, but this place is good in our books.
My partner and I used to go Montri's religiously until we discovered on one very sad day that they had closed down. The food, service and ambience there was second to none. Needing a new Thai option, and since we live downtown, we decided to try out Salathai on Burrard. It wasn't quite as good as Montri's, but then nothing is. As a second choice, it was excellent. Delicious food, good service (a little bit impersonal, but pleasant and prompt), and a very nice atmosphere. Overall, we felt it was good value.
Knowing that we now go to Salathai, I was given a gift certificate by a family member, but not realizing that there was a downtown location close to where we live, the person bought the certificate from Salathai on Cambie Street, and it has to be redeemed at the location where it was purchased.
Last night (Friday, November 19th), we went there for dinner, fully expecting that it would be exactly the same as the downtown one in terms of overall quality. WRONG!!! We walked in and a sullen-looking waitress saw us, and sauntered over to seat us. There was no "hello" or "how are you", or anything of the kind, which was surprising seeing as Thai restaurants seem to always be the most gracious, in our experience.
We were seated and as we sat there, I saw this same waitress serving food to a nearby table. As she brought out the food, she looked like she wished she were anywhere but there. She plopped the food down on the nearby table and walked away. No "here you are" or "enjoy your dinner" - nothing. Just plain rude. Then an older woman came to take our order. The vibe I got was that she was probably the owner. She walked up to our table, and with no "how are you?" or any type of initial salutation and no smile, she grimly looked at us with her pad and pen, and said "are you ready to order?" She was like this throughout the entire dinner - really unpleasant.
Then the food arrives. It looked good enough except for the pad thai which looked like mush. You couldn't really see the outline of the noodles. I felt like if I picked up a bunch of it in my hand, it would easily revert back to a ball of flour and water - gross. It turned out to be tasteless. I've never had a pad thai that I didn't like anywhere, until now. The rest of the food was no better and while we normally take our leftovers home, we didn't in this case, and instead left a ton of food behind. Ms. Miserable asked if we'd like it packed up and we said "no thank you". You would think she'd ask at that point if it was okay. No, didn't care one bit.
We have always prided ourselves on being "good" customers. By that, I mean that we're pleasant, easy to serve, make few requests, and almost always leave at least 20%. We had a wonderful relationship with the folks at Montri's, who even bought us chocolates one Christmas in appreciation of our service over the year! Really lovely.
I said to my partner that there's a contemptuousness with which the servers at Salathai Cambie serve their customers. It's like they're indentured servants who crave their freedom and see the customers as symbols of an elusive happy life. So bizarre. There was a younger waitress, the older woman (owner), and a guy with a freaky bob haircut, and all were equally unpleasant. He was okay, but nobody smiles at you, and nobody gives a damn whether you live or die.
I've only left a restaurant once without leaving a tip, for the same reasons. And last night marked the second time. We left zero. We just felt we'd be insulted ourselves by tipping. There was no "service" in the sense that most define the term.
Then, the piece de resistance was when we left. We both walked right by the younger waitress, and normally, regardless of who served you, whomever happens to be at the entrance/exit when you leave, always says something like "have a nice evening" or "thank you for coming" or SOMETHING!! She looked away and moved on to whatever else she was doing.
And if you're wondering if it was us, believe me, it wasn't. When we walked in, we were all smiles and "hello, how are you?" etc... because I believe you usually get back what you put out. Not at Salathai Cambie!!!
So, please do not confuse this location's abominable presence with that of the Burrard location. The only commonality here is the name - there are no other parallels, whatsoever, other than the type of cuisine.
Never going back and can't believe that this place still draws in customers. It's insulting.
The Tom Kah Gai is okay. Nothing exceptional, but has a good balance of flavours. The Gai Haw Bai Toey (marinated chicken wrapped in pandan (?) leaf then baked or what have you) has a nice aroma to it, but was on the dry side--still interesting, especially the thick sweet sauce it comes w/ that's topped w/ white sesame sprinkles. The stickiness of the sauce helps to attach the sesame to the chicken when you dip it in, resulting in a nice crispy texture w/ each bite. The chili dipping sauce gives it plenty of kick. Their "specialty" green curry chicken comes quite bland... mostly just very milky w/o the curry flavours while the chicken is too rough & dry. The Gaeng Daeng Gai (red curry chicken) is equally lacking in flavours, and hence "bad" but not as bad as the green curry. I'd still avoid the both of them anyway.
I don't see any reason to return at all.
Though the flavours & decor were preferable in the downtown Burrard location, I'd NEVER go back to there because of the service. The service at this location is pleasant though the decor is a little aged and seemed a bit thrown-together but functional.
For their lunch special they served a tepid brown liquid of unknown provenance with a few tiny pieces of carrot floating in it. The seafood dish was inedible - it was old and stank. I returned the dishes and left without paying for this crap. The haughty waitress/owner didn't give a damn. Avoid this joint - it sucks big time.
Came here for a quick dinner and ordered the following:
Shrimp Cake
Pad Thai
The Shrimp Cake was nice although a little steep for the portion size. The Pad Thai was straight out disappointing since it looked and tasted like it was microwaved instead of freshly made. I was expecting a lot more for an authentic Thai restaurant and would not go back again.
I used to recommend this place to friends and family, but the last couple times I have come have really changed my mind. The service is extremely slow, and most foods require you to order an extra side of rice. Portions are small for what you pay.
The last time I showed up it took 5 minutes for them to take my Water order... then another 5 minutes for it to arrive.
I recommend trying another place.
I get lunch take out from here about once every two weeks.
Food: The last few times that we have gotten take out we ordered
N9. PAD THAI - Decent but I have had much better else where.
N10. SPICY DRUNKEN NOODLE - Tasty sand spicy just the way I like it. One of my favorite items on their menu
Service: I only get take out, but they don't look to be a happy bunch.
Value: About a 2-3 more then it should be for the quality of food compared to the sounding area restaurant.
Ambiance: I have yet to eat in the restaurant, I always get take out.
Its OK but not great, I'm planning on coming back mainly because of lack of other options.
I used to live just around the corner from here so I dined there quite often. Since I moved 6 years ago, I've only gone there a handful of times. The last time was a couple of months ago, and it kinda slipped.
We went fairly close to closing, so seating wasn't a problem, and food came out quickly. We had the satay and spring rolls as starters. The rolls came out just a tad bit overdone, but oh well.
We ordered one of the green curries and the pad thai. For some reason, the pad thai seemed quite bland. It's usually quite flavourful but this time it seemed lacking. While they never was big on quantity, it just seemed even less than usual. Maybe I'm just used to bigger quantities, not sure. Since I'm not a huge coconut milk fan, I only had a couple of bites of the green curry. Boyfriend ate it all up, so it must have been good.
The waiter was really interested in my boyfriend, so he got attentive service; I think I was in the way :p
Decor is getting tired, it needs sprucing up a bit. Overall, it's still one of the better Thai restaurants, but the last meal there lacked the wow factor it used to have.
I'd say that I am split between the reviewers on this page, so far. I believe that Sala Thai serves solid, dependable Thai food. I would not go out of my way to patronize this establishment, but I do prefer it to Thai Away Home (Take Thai Home?).
The first thing that strikes you when you enter this particular Sala Thai is the dated, casual ambiance. I first thought that the restaurant needed a makeover, but after I sat down and looked around I decided that the stale atmosphere and South East Asian tack reflected the restaurant's reputation as a comfortable, casual place to eat.
The service was impeccable, and the food was satisfying. We ordered the ubiquitous pad thai and the green curry with eggplant and chicken. I have had better pad thai (Montri's, Thai House) and better green curry (Chao Phraya, Tropica) but everything was fresh and flavourful. The prices are right too.
I recommend Sala Thai, especially if you are in the hood, yo.
Naively thinking Salathai might be better than the thai across the street we decided to have pad thai and a red curry at salathai. The food arrived very quickly but the portions were super small. The pad thai was drenched in grease and there was not much to it. The red curry was quite flavorless. We left unsatisfied and hungry.
Is it too much to expect a decent meal, served in a timely fashion? We dropped in here after seeing Avatar at the Park. Big mistake. Sure they were busy, but our first dish took an hour to arrive and the rest fitfully over the next hour. Rice was fine; Pad Thai edible, if smothered in sickly sauce. Prawn dish ordered arrived as chicken - sent back; came back with still blue prawns - sent back again. Beef in sesame sauce was grey stewed beef in a watery gravy - no taste of sesame. Clams tasted weirdly chemical - too scared to eat more than a couple. Spring rolls took 90 mins to arrive. No one asked if we were okay, we had to practically wrestle a server to the ground to get another round of drinks. They took the clams off the bill after we complained, at least. But one of the worst dining experiences I can recall - and certainly not worth $120. Save your money.
The first time I went to Sala Thai the food wasn't very good so I went back a second time. We had stuffed chicken wings, which were the best part of the meal. We also ordered a noodle dish with beef and broccoli, which reminded me of really bad chinese food (overcooked beef and flavourless).
The sad part is the people who work there are always very nice and helpful. Sorry Sala, I won't be coming back.
After the impressive hype of the website and multiple awards I was looking forward to something special to celebrate a special event. Unfortunately this restaurant did not live up at all to its billings. The rice was old and reheated in a microwave! It was an odorless Jasmine, if you can imagine that. The leathery and overcooked chicken in the satay and a red curry dish left the same impression. They and a green curry seafood deluxe special dish tasted as though someone had mistaken a teaspoon for a cup when adding sugar to the sauce. The plating was mediocre, the plates themselves need an upgrade. The Polish beer was okay, but all in all the place left a bad taste in our mouths and in my case a queasy stomach. A pity. I had heard this was a good restaurant in the past.
Been going to Sala Thai for years and years with family. Solid, delicious food and great friendly service. The decor is super-dated in a late 80s sort of way, but not a major concern. Stuffed chicken wings, duck red curry, pad thai, swimming rama and garlic beef are all standouts. Curries, pad thai and many other dishes can be made vegetarian very easily. Fun drink specials too, and fragrant and yummy coconut rice. The new location has a nicer atmosphere, could be fun for a big old wedding; I'm happy to recommend both places.
I've tried a bunch of Thai places and this place has the best Pad Thai I've had so far. The curried duck or chicken with basil leaves is fantastic and we really liked the spicy prawns in chili sauce. We've been about a dozen times now and the service is always fabulous. This is our Thai place for now!
