I used to work at this place as a host/cashier back in '93 when it first opened. I know the owner well and they are nice people. I go back every now and then to have drinks in the upstairs karaoke lounge, but NEVER do I ever eat there. Back in '93, this place was half decent only because there were far fewer Korean restaurants back then. In the past, 6 or 7 years the quality of Korean food has improved immeasurably and I would say rival even some of the better Korean restaurants in LA (the largest Koreatown in the world). With that being said, this place ranks near the bottom of the list among Korean restaurants for Koreans. It's not so much the fact that Seoul house has gotten worse, but more due to the fact that the competition has gotten better and more numerous than them. Back in '93, I'd say there were maybe 10 Korean restaurants. Now there are around 60 or so.
The owners of this place are really nice people. The original owner actually died of lung cancer around 10 years or so ago and is now being run by the widowed wife and her sister. The restaurant isn't being run nearly as well as it should be. Part of the problem lies in the high turnover of the staff. Most of the waitresses are overseas students who don't really take their jobs seriously. The same can be said for the cooks. The same attitude pervades the management as well. There is no care or attention to detail. The men's washroom with the broken stall door back and toilet in '93 still hasn't been fixed believe it or not. Both toilets are in disrepair. One is missing a tank lid. The ownership really doesn't care about the little things and it shows. They feel that whether or not the toilets work properly or not, people will still come. They haven't fixed it all these years and people are still coming (not Koreans of course) and they are still making lots of money, so they figure "don't fix it if it ain't broke" (I'm talking about the cashflow, not the toilets).
I went to the restaurant with my friends recently because we were craving some Korean BBQ. We ordered some marinated beef ribs which were incredibly delicious! Our waitress came over to check up on the BBQ often and helped us cook it and cut it up into small pieces. I loved how we didn't have to cook our own food!
The service was prompt and I was impressed, overall. The cheerful waitress (who was fluent in English, might I add) made our experience very enjoyable
I used to come here often with my family a few years ago as it was the nearest korean restaurant around and it was always a bit sub par when it came to service. I just recently ate there with a friend trying korean food for the first time and I was extremely surprised at the difference in service and overall ambiance of the restaurant. They seem to have done some inner renovations such as the floors and the inside of the rooms and the servers are much more attentive and cordial than before. My friend especially enjoyed the experience of having our server cut and cook the meat in front of us. I would have to say the most notable part of this restaurant worth going for is the bbq beef which is always a delight to eat with vegetables and cold beer!
My boyfriend and I have been to this place about 3 or 4 times and have stopped going altogether because the service is so bad. The food itself is decent and from what I recall the price range is normal, but you practically have to use a flare gun to get someone's attention.
I figured that staff turnovers could have made this place better, but it seems as though they have a knack for hiring rude and incompetent people. If you try to order a cocktail - they will make an excuse for not being able to make one. The tea never gets refilled and when I ordered some food the waitress just stared at me and said she didn't know what that was - IT IS RIGHT IN THE MENU!!! Servers should know what is on the menu.
Getting any attention when you walk in the door and trying to get your bill is also a struggle. There is no excuse for this as I have never been here when the place is busy.
Like I said, the food is decent - but none of the staff give a damn.
There are better Korean restaurants in town and in more convenient locations.
I became a fan of Korean food after a summer of teaching in Seoul. I know what authentic Korean food is and this restaurant is very good. The dishes are much luck what could be found in Korea, the dishes are flavourful, and with some minor variations the real "goods". I do agree withe another reviewer that the service is lacking, so much so that I would hesitate to go back. It seems that the main waitress really didn't care. Thankfully the support staff took up much of the slack.
I was at this restaurant today with my family for dinner and found that although the food was pretty good, the service needed some work. I am fairly certain that the restaurant does take reservations as the guy that I spoke to on the phone noted down our reservation. However, when we arrived, there was no record of our reservation in their books and we were a large party (8 people). Luckily, we were there when the restaurant wasn't that full yet, so we were able to get a table without a reservation. When ordering drinks, I requested a long island iced tea to which the waitress replied, saying that they could not make long island iced teas today. That was fine. I ended up ordering a regular iced tea. I finished my drink quickly though and ordered a Singapore Sling. The waitress stared at me blankly and asked me what that was. Surprised, I stated it was a drink on their menu (you would think they would know the items on their own menu!). The waitress from whom I requested a long island iced tea came back and stated that NO cocktails were being made today. That's fine, but I would have appreciated her telling me the first time around. I then ordered a coke that they promptly forgot about. To be fair, the food was fairly tasty - I do not have any complaints about the food. I just wish service was a bit better, especially considering that they were not that busy. I also would appreciate them having better knowledge of their menu items.
The Korean BBQ buffet on Saturday afternoon is great for under $15. The food was great, and the service was amazing. I've been to many of these types of BBQ places, and this was the first place where they came over to change the grill every 10 mins. Large dining area, with plenty of space and private booths. Great value! Will definetly go back whenever I'm in the area!
Visited for lunch today and was appalled at the absolutely filthy condition of this restaurant. And, whatever you do, don't visit the washrooms, as you have to run the gauntlet of tons of junk in the back and in the kitchen to get to them and when you do - yikes.....floors and walls covered with grease and worse, OMG! Yes, we understand that Korean BBQ can be smokey and a bit greasy from the open grills, but we've never visited a Korean BBQ restaurant this bad before.
The owners need to get the message that 'good food and clean surroundings brings in customers'.
I go to Seoul House Royal at least once a month with my family for their Saturday lunch buffet. The food is incredibly tasty but non-greasy. I highly recommend their appetizer dishes (5-6 varieties) . The meat is more well marinated, tender and flavored than any other korean restaurant I've been to. The service is not so good, but that's not really an issue for All-You-Can eat lunches. It is never packed or noisy like other restaurants, so it's quite good for people who want to carry on decent conversation while eating.
3 of us were there for some Korean BBQ dinner. Food was great and prices were low but service and ambiance were unbelievably bad.
Waitor there was pretty FOB and can't seem to speak English. Because of miscommunication, we misunderstood that some dishes were free but in fact they were charged! Moreoever, when he brought our meat dipping sauce, he had his finger dipped in the sauce! When we asked for the rice that came with our combos, they only brought 2 bowls even though each of us were supposed to have our own bowl. Moreover, 1 of the bowl was completely cold!
As for ambiance, they had some kind of asian trance music going on, so we felt like we were in a rave rather than in a restaurant. Even worse was that they played the music on some low-quality recordable-CD and so the music kept skipping during the night.
For good food and "unique" service and ambiance, I totally recommend the place.
This is my very favorite Korean restaurant in Vancouver! It has the most yummy side dishes and my favorite main course dishes are the spicy kimchi soup and the bibimbap stone bowl. I have been going to this restaurant for about a year and recently the service has GREATLY improved, it seems to be under different management possibly. Also if you know to press the button at the table it helps as the restaurant is quite large and this button alerts the servers that you would like help. Everyone is always super friendly and the prices are so much lower than other Korean restaurants. This place is a great choice especially if you're wanting to have a family style meal as the BBQ is awesome and it's really fun to share dishes and try everything, I have tried most items and have yet to find something that isn't absolutely delicious. Highly recommend this place!!!!
