The Ridge is always a staple of mine when i need a chinese food fix. It's an unpretentious family run restaurant.
The quality of food is consistent and is amazingly good value for money.
I recommend their lettuce wrap, smooth tofu dish, schezuan green beans (always fresh and tasty - the owners are out every morning sourcing produce) and steamed fish.
I think they've increased their prices only once in the past 15+years!
Plenty of parking available around the restaurant.
Service can vary between excellent and ok - depends on who you get... Fabulous for delivery. Open at lunchtime too, the 'lunch' crowd is very different to the evening clientelle. Quick turnover at lunch.
For sure a recommendation, reserve, just to be on the safe side.
Is this really 2009? Before seeing a Tibetan movie at the Ridge four of us thought we would have a Chinese dinner at "the place on the corner", the Ridge Garden. Not a great experience, bland pricy food, typical of the old type chinese restaurants and maybe what a lot of people still like. The prices at an average of $14 an entree were twice what Hons charge at nowhere near the quality. A sterile atmosphere and predictable dishes. At least my fortune cookie said my future was going to be OK.
Although a dirty feeling, there is a friendly atmosphere, and the food is very consistent, although not the best. Better than food court but not as great as mainstream restaurants, this little restaurant in a conspicuous part of town with few chinese restaurants, is a cozy place to dine. Parking is easy, although the new addition of Meinhardt will mean more cars it shouldn't be hard to find a spot, and bus stops all around, on arbutus and 16th. Food tastes oily but has a classic chinatown character to it, I would recommend my friends to eat here although i wouldn't treat them to dinner here. Price is Great and food tastes good but unhealthy, worth trying and take out/delivery is a great option if you don't want to cook but don't like the dirty atmosphere
This is a good restaurant for take outs. We have been there for dinner many times but its always busy and we never have time to sit and chat.
We have ordered Take Out a few times and the food is always great.
The Lettuce Wrap is always good,
Try the Deep Fried Wontons - Crispy and fantastic
Chicken Chow Mein - good
The delivery takes 30 - 45 min and the food is hot and not soggy.
We tried this place several years ago and decided not to go back, until recently when we gave it another shot. From the outside, one might assume the food will be mall food court quality, but it turned out to be great! It's a great find in this neighbourhood (right by the Ridge Theatre), especially after Win's burnt down. If you wrote it off years ago, give it another try, you'll be pleasantly surprised.
